Wow.... Every day's a school day. I think I understood that and thanks for that Callum. I will have to give your net a listen now I get Friday's off.
Please do! Great!
Thank you, Callum, for explaining split operation. It also explains the importance of
listening before transmitting. Have a great day. KF6EWO Gary
Good morning Callum, I have work split before and I really enjoy it. I guess one of the key secrets is listen, listen, listen. What I really enjoy doing is when we have arm forces week Where the military operate on their frequencies and we operate on ours, frequencies, so we have to operate split And that is so much fun to do. I hope you have a fantastic weekend and spring has sprung over to your QTH.

Yours is my favourite channel because being new to the hobby I learn a lot and there’s always a variety of topics. Cheers
Tim
Great to hear!
Excellent info to pass on Cal and a great idea to do a demo session running split. YOU ROCK.
Yes.. I'm looking forward to it..
I was vaguely aware of why split is used but not really being a DXer I've never used it. My FTdx10 has a split button so I will have to try it out. Thanks for another great video. The "Band Police" can go butt a stump, as Grandma used to say. Jack K5FIT
Butt a stump! LOL
On the ftdx10 just press n hold the split button n it does it for you 👍👍
Thanks for being sich a patient guy! Just giving it a try, finding out with other stations on how to run their equipment ro do splits instead of yelling at esch other to do so. I really like how you are into your hobby without being the „elite HAM“, not that Mr. Knowseverything but having fun giving it a try. ✌🏻
Oh yes, we are all in the same boat..!
split is always a great option for dx and dxpeditions. dont forget the lids and the band police and the tune uppers...lol...they are always there. 73 cheers and beers calum
Hi Callum! Thanks for the great video and as always very good explanation!!! We are thinking in the same way. I'm also working on a split video right now.
My video will complement yours harmoniously! 😀
HAHA! That's coincidence! Very cool Raisa! :)
Hi Callum!
@@DXCommanderHQ here is my video
ua-cam.com/video/gsOqGYpVy1Q/v-deo.html 😉
I always wondered what the 5/10 up was really all about. Splitting up the pile up using half duplex very interesting. Hope you are well Cal.
Hiya John. Yeah - I've not played with it myself. Could be a blast.
Great information explained well! Simple English is easily understood. Hands on explanations and drawings very helpful thank you for What you do beyond manufacturing one the best HF antennas available in the world today Sir.
You're very welcome! Thank you!
For those with an FT-891 and are new to the radio, just a quick how to
1) Set the VFO to the frequency you want to listen to, then push the function button (F) to enter the menu screen. (You should see TNR, VOX, PRC, MON...., etc) if not, keep pressing the function button until you get to that screen
2) On the next row down, place the arrow to the left of SPL, then push and hold the selector dial (enter button, the one you were turning to move the arrow) until you hear the double beep (about 1.5 seconds)
3) press and hold the function button again to exit the function menu
You should now see your VFO frequency A at the top and at the bottom frequency B should be 5 khz up from VFO A. To the left of B you should see SPL highlighted dark to let you know you are in fact operating split, you will now be transmitting on the frequency shown next to B and listening to the frequency shown next to A
By default, the 891 will set the quick split transmit frequency up 5khz from whatever A is set to, this can be customized in the advanced settings menu
05-13 "quick SPL freq"
To get back out of split go back into the function screen, place the arrow to the left of SPL and do a single quick press to un-highlight it, when you exit the function screen you should no longer see SPL to the left of VFO B. You are now transmitting and listening on A like normal.
Have fun

Well written. Good man!
@m0mcx Thanks Callum for doing these kinds of videos. It's a lot more encouraging than being yelled at by the band police
I participated in a DX station running split about a month ago, for the first time. I want to say it was a station in Caledonia, but I'd have to check my log to be sure. Anyway, I already knew what "5 up" meant- remembering it from a video back when I was studying for my first exam. I had to break out the manual to my Kenwood TS-430S to figure out how to play along, and was amazed how remarkably simple it was on this 40+ year old radio. It was so nice hearing the DX station with very little interference from a never-ending sea of call signs, I immediately wished more DX stations would use split. I knew exactly when he chose a call sign to make contact with, and I knew exactly when he chose me. I never would have heard him repeat my call without split, as he would have been completely drowned out by the sheer number of U.S. Americans running huge amplifiers. DX split can be a godsend to us broke Americans running barefoot on old radios and dipoles!
Ah nice! Good job on the 430 too :)
Also a good way to operate out of band sort of.....listen on say 7.210 in uk n transmit on 7.197:) just as an example
Invaluable information, this was never explained during foundation and intermediate training I did, still waiting my first ever contact on HF with anybody, I have a DX Commander antenna, no joy with that I'll give it a go again LOL. 73
Tim.. If you join in the live-chat on Fridays at 12:00 UTC (normally 2-hours) feel free to drop a line in the Live Chat, "Callum it's Tim here - My Callsign is XYZ and I'm about to call you as you requested" - and I will shut the pile up down for a minute and give you a shout..
It's also super useful when the station everyone is chasing is QRP compared to the people calling them.
Maybe because they are activating sota from a super rare hard summit and couldn't carry much weight with them
Thank you Calum! Requested this a bit ago. Really appreciate you getting around to it!
Nothing beats a Calum explanation!
Ah brilliant!!
Cracking Video Cal - I'll see if I can get you next Friday..
Nice tutorial Cal and after listening to the chaos on the Bovet TX frequency I have to wonder why working split doesn't feature in the training for those going for their licence worldwide! By the way I can only assume Band-Police headquarters is in Croatia since they all seem to want to go to Splllllllllllit!!!!! 😂😂 I'll get me coat !
It is in the syllabus... but needs to be from foundation level
Haha Tom!
Nice video Callum.
Hey Tyler! Yeah, I want to try it out myself :)
An FT-101, a blast from the past Callum. Good video, compulsory viewing for some I think.
Yes Ron!
Thanks I learn so much from . I’m new ham and will have my ft-891 in man pack up and running soon and I can’t wait to get on 10 meters
Fantastic!
On the TS990 and TS890 you press the main VFO TX button that is lit up - the band selection panel lights up - for "5 up" - just press 5 - hey presto.
Next time you are at the shop, you can show me!!
On ELISSA on Galveston Island, and on N5E for Museum Ships Weekend. We are a sailing vessel. Everybody wants our card. Talk about a wall...
And ELISSA was built in Scotland!
Working split on CW can be fun too..
Great explanation. I think about having a separate receiver and transmitter and it's almost like duplex operation...but sometimes tough to figure out how to configure a single transceiver. Hmm...now where is that manual??? 🤔
Yes!!! User Guides are critical :)
So what? So, just listen before transmitting. A good DX station working split will say that they are doing just that. Also if you have access - look at the cluster it will say something like UP or split. The ONLY answer to the accidental TX on the wrong frequency is if everyone listened first!! Great explanation Cal. The band police are worse than those "guilty" of not listening first.
Hi Cal,
My thinking for you to operate split is with the TX RIT set to the frequency for your transmit, or have your Split button set for a lower 5K or so. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Yes Don..
I like to listen to the band police... they cause more trouble than the guys who don't know about the split operation
Another great video Cal....like the idea of a trial 'split ' session 👌...Mark..m0mco
Yes, looking forward to it..
… also, if you drive a Kenwood, press TF-SET to hear the split.
Is *THAT* what it does! lol
I don’t mind split… working a 5 to 10 up is a lottery… not for me! A good operator will work 1 split frequency, then ask numerically, if it’s a huge pile up..any 1’s etc. in my opinion.
Hi Callum. When you say "in the main", what do you mean.
Thx!
I mean it is generally true - but there are exceptions.
Is this where the saying "listen up" comes from? I thought this after hearing that with Bouvet you had to "listen up x khz
I'm going to have to watch this a second time; still sinking in how it works
That's it.. Listen Up (5).. You got it.
Up five!! UP FIVE!!
UP FIVE SPLEEET!!
Always go 7-Up. The difference is clear ;-) (TM)
Haha
7up. The Un-Cola!
I knew what split was, but not exactly why it was used. Thanks for clearing that up Cal. When you get used to it, it works really well! 73 VK4QP
Yes, to be honest I had to think about it myself to work it out!
@@DXCommanderHQ Looking forward to seeing you trying it out on Friday. Be interesting to see how it goes. Might be a few complaints and a bit of confusion to start with, but I'm sure most of the crowd will like it...
Yeah.. Honestly, I'm not too comfortable.. But we can try it!
Thank you Callum, but every radio amateur should have learned about operating technology before his license exam, right ?. What worries me more is that there are a lot of OM who ignore any band plans and thus cause a lot of trouble. This seems to have become the new national sport. DX window seems to be a foreign word for many.
Cheers Jochen DH1KJ
I know Jochen.. The world changes. We just need to adapt. Tragic - but true.
@@DXCommanderHQ It's like the wrong-way driver on the Autobahn who also says "these idiots, why are they all driving the wrong way?" the key is just listen listen listen and not constantly shouting like a howler monkey, even while the DX station is talking :-) crazy but true!
Yes!!
I guess I have a mental block because in my 31 years of HF I still don't see the advantage of working split. The station calling CQ still has to sort through a pile of calls coming at him or her to pick one. They're just not on the CQ callers transmit frequency.
You don't see the advantage? Maybe I got the video wrong!
SPLIT!!!!!!!
😂😂
spleet police pay attention lol
today the spleet police were active for Antartica 140EK101 lol, good videos you have. 73
Here’s one brief example of how to split (CW) on Yaesu FTdx3000… ua-cam.com/video/WkYY_WfyTYk/v-deo.html
Hope that helps someone… somewhere.
Sppppplllllliiiiiiiittttttttt!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
HAHA
Love split , what is your radio set up in the drum room 😁
I don't have any radios any more in the "drum" room.. I have everything down the farm and we'll shortly be able to remote control it..
@@DXCommanderHQ ahh that sounds interesting , will be good to do a Friday from home sometime bud
@@DXCommanderHQ with both the ic7610 and Kenwood 890 available from a preference which would you choose I know you have the 990 but just a logical opinion
Well, on the one hand, the Icom for dual receive because I absolutely LOVE dual VFOs. If you were not going to use the 2nd VFO like I do, the 890 for the built-like-a-tank and incredible TX quality. It is the sort of radio that you will probably never get rid of - however in a couple of years I would be you would be chopping out the Icom for something else more "bling" - and that cycle would continue until you found the ONE radio that just worked. PS - There is also some AMAZING free remote control software that someone recently wrote for the 890.
@@DXCommanderHQ I've got the 890 on alert pre order and the 7610 and ftdx101d in my basket and a head ache to choose ha ha
Hey my friend, is it CQ or is it seek you DX
It's from the French.. They used to shout, "SECURITE!" (the last E is pronounced like "EY") which effectively means "ATTENTION!". This became CQ..
@@DXCommanderHQ OK, thanks for getting back to me. My name is Joe triple three lower side of side band. Hope to catch you out there one day love your videos love your knowledge brilliant
🎉🎉🎉❤
How about some 10M for us techs?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, I did do 10m. I always go up there about 13:30 ish. Last week we also worked AM on 29.2 as well.
OK, what about LISTENING before TRANSMITING!
And that.
Make sure to troll the band police a little bit by asking your friends to call you and NOT TX up.
HAHA
Another moan, sorry, however, stations working split on 17m and working a deliberately vague 5-10 up simply spreads the total bandwith of the DX station and its associated QRM over 20KHz.
Nobody ever operates in the 5KHz gap between the DX call and the QRM as that's filled with the splatter from both parties meaning phone on 17 has practically nothing left to play with, factor in this being a contest weekend and you're stuck.
Thanks Callum for covering what is a contentious issue but you could also have mentioned the blind impotent rage fest caused when one of the zoo tries to turn his split second 59 moment into a full blown two over QSO!
Well, I was indeed trying to keep a lid on the farce that this can cause - agreed!
That ain't a pile up. You should hear the Indonesians on 40 at night VK time
I always prefer a banana 🍌 split while working split
Yes!
5 up obviously means turn your amp up 5 more
Good point!!
FM repeaters work on splits. So concept is not new!
For a totally different reason.. But yes.
As with all things with ham radio, learn about splits before you need to us it!!! :)
Thank you for your work, good content as always ! 73 de VA2PCV :)
Many thanks!
