- The year is 1967 and both the big screen and small screen are jam-packed with super spy James Bond clones. Seemingly everyone’s in on it - even Fred Flintstone became a spy in A Man Called Flintstone. This was peak Bondmania, which reached it’s zenith when Columbia PIctures, who managed to buy the rights for Ian Fleming’s CASINO ROYALE, but out their own James Bond satire - which, unlike the others, was actually able to use some of the elements from the books thanks to a tricky rights situation that would take thirty plus years to clean up.
The resulting film was a hit, but it had a disastrous effect on the Bond franchise, in more ways than one. Not only would it take until the release of Skyfall in 2012 for the Bond franchise to once again hit the stratospheric heights of THUNDERBALL, but behind the scenes drama would throughly alienate star Sean Connery, who was fond of telling everyone that the next film -YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - would be his last.
Join us as we take a look at this epic Bond-extravanganza, which gave us our first look at Ernst Stavro Blofeld, and stands as a prototypical sixties Bond film, with so many of the elements here being spoofed in Austin Powers, on The Simpsons (Scorpio!) and more.

I've always said that You Only Live Twice is the film with the maximum Bond-isms; exotic locales, gadgets and girls galore, a hollowed out volcano villain's lair, and Blofeld is the big bad. Plus, there's ninjas. On fire. And the music! This is my favorite Bond movie.
Rip Sir Sean Connery 1930-2020
There's a sad story attached to the filming of You Only Live Twice. Little Nellie was developed by former RAF pilot Ken Wallis. There wasn't an aircraft like it at the time and Wallis regularly turned up on television and radio talking about his extraordinary creation. Bond production designer Ken Adam became aware of Wallis and his gyrocopter, and promptly hired him, knowing that the portable gyrocopter would be a perfect, iconic gadget for 007. John Stear's special effects team then adorned 'Little Nellie' with machine guns, rockets and missiles - all of which made the gyrocopter unstable and difficult to fly - Ken Wallis (who piloted her) almost crashed into the camera helicopter on multiple occasions. At one point, there was only five hours of filmed arial footage, and 85 recorded take-offs for Little Nellie.
Cameraman John Jordan had devised a new technique for shooting arial footage from a helicopter. Rather than film from inside a helicopter, he would be suspended in a cradle underneath, allowing him a wide, unhindered field of vision, without the rotor-blades of the aircraft getting into shot - crucial for the arial battle scenes filmed over the Miyazaki mountains, but where he was also buffeted by the wind and vulnerable.
During filming, as Little Nellie is attacked by two SPECTRE Bell helicopters, one of the Bells got too close to Jordan, and it's rotor blades struck his foot, almost severing it. Luckily, the world's top microsurgeons were gathered in Japan for a conference, and Jordan was flown to them. They were able to reattach his foot, and after convalescing, filming resumed. However, Jordan insisted the foot 'didn't feel right', and after he returned to London, he had it amputated and replaced with a prosthetic.
Jordan resumed filming on many movies, including the next 007 adventure, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, where he filmed some incredible landscape shots and actually removed his prosthetic foot to aid him in filming the bobsleigh scenes. But, while filming action scenes over the Pacific from a B25 Mitchell Bomber for Catch 22, Jordan lost his footing and fell over to thousand feet to his death.

It's a nice story, but the Gyrocopter was flown in 1923. Sorry, had to google it.. as I remember reading about them before the Movie came out.. I still have a "Thing" for Gyrocopters, 'cause Little Nellie will always be my first love.
Ken Wallis was a Gentleman, and I met him when he gave a Lecture In Norfolk, about a year before he past away.
During a break in the Lecture Ken Wallis was told that one of audience had lost her husband killed with bomber command in World War 2.
A RAF veteran of WW2, Ken sat with her, held her hand, and just listened to her story.
They do not make great men like him anymore.
Ugh, he was only 44. RIP

I actually truly love You Only Live Twice. It is a ton of fun and has a balance of the serious tone as well. Despite all the issues surrounding this film, I think it is one of the best. You have to reflect on the era these films were made which is why You Only Live Twice is an outstanding time capsule to enjoy.
I’m surprised he forgot to mention how two Blofields were in the film with Charles Greys short part in You Only Live Twice and how he would play Blofield in Diamonds are Forever.
The most remarkable thing about this movie, Bond stuff wise, is the beauty that a Toyota GT2000 is... what a beautiful car.
Fun fact: they had to cut the roof off as Connery was too tall for the 45.7-inch-tall coupe, so Toyota agreed to chop off the top.
Connery's head still stuck up above the windshield, so his diminutive costar Akiko Wakabayashi got to drive while Agent 007 settled onto a floor-mounted cushion.

This is one of the best Bond movies ever. My teacher in japanese language have co starred in a japanese TV series with the Bond girl Mie Hama and he have met Tetsuro Tamba who played Tiger Tanaka in this Bond movie. He told me that Tamba was a very funny guy and once the japanese police almost arrested him and Tamba when they were wearing soviet army officers uniforms in a movie role they were playing in.

I always like to think that Blofeld had a thing for red heads. Each movie he is in either has a henchwoman or Bond love interest as shown in Diamonds are Forever with Tiffany Case. Great review and video!

Donald Pleasance was perfectly cast as Blofeld, as we didn't know what he looked like until we saw his face.

It’s annoying, especially considering his death scene in “Twice” is so memorable.
Although, there are some fan theories that Blofeld looks like that guy in “Diamonds”, because Blofeld is using the character’s identity. Purposely got surgery to look like him.

He could use the Japanese contact’s resources and clean slate, and he could use it to taunt Bond.

Nah, too short and his voice was too high pitched. He definitely pulled off the creepiness though
I prefer Pleasence in the role of Henderson. Ηis murder would not be true - like Bond in Hong Kong - and in the volcano he would say that he is Blofeld's half brother.
In the novel, Blofeld's father was Polish, and his mother was Greek, hence his Greek name Stavro.

I was around 13 when this was released, and loved it for his gyrocopter....'Little Nellie'. My introduction to 007 though, was a few years earlier.....when my father took me to see 'Thunderball'. Not sure when I eventually got around to seeing the earlier James Bond classics. But I became pretty obsessed with Sean Connery in the role.

For one reason or another, "You Only Live Twice" is my absolute favorite Connery Bond movies. One of those "I'll keep it on the screen if it's on" movies.
Call me crazy, but this is my personal favorite even though I know it’s not the best. Just love that 60s Japan vibe.
My favorite too. It's just so over the top and pretty much exactly what I want from a Bond film. My next favorite is The Spy Who Loved Me which shares a lot of similarities to this one. I do love the more serious movies like From Russia With Love being probably the "technically" best Bond movie. But the series is pretty much about escapism and male power fantasy and YOLT and TPWLM do the best at being a silly fun adventure.
I love Moonraker, Never say Never and Golden Eye (my first "adult" Bond film... i.e. the one i bought a ticket for the cinema for myself for, before that i had only seen 007 on TV) with an honorable mention for Goldfinger and "Live and Let Die" due to their stories if not the cinematography, but pretty much all Bond movies (even the old Casino Royale) have something to them that makes them enjoyable and unique. The Bond i can actually enjoy the least is Timothy Dalton, too sombre and brooding, well Craig also needed 3 movies to win me over, the rest are all great. Even the Australian :D

@@JohnP538 I read the book as a young boy and at the time, I thought the love scenes were pretty erotic. I haven't re-read it, but I think those same passages would be considered tame compared to sex scenes in today's literature.

Another spot on assessment. This one got really silly and I read an interview with Maibum who called it’s silliness out back when the two bonds went head to head in 1983. In the end anytime Connery is Bond the film generally works and so I grade his Bond movies on a curve. Connery, the Score, some great fight scenes and the exotic locale make this a top ten Bond for me. It’s so absurd that these producers were so cheap, they didn’t back up the Brinks truck to have Connery come back in on her Majesty Secret Service.
Donald Pleasance was so underrated in everything he has done! Especially the small speech about how Michael Meyers was pure evil, it still gives me the chills!
BTW Tiger Tanaka was an AWESOME M in this movie!

Thunderball and You Only Live Twice remain my two favorites.
As a kid, this was my all time fave Bond movie. It had everything and so many gadgets! As an adult, it's been bumped to #2 by Goldfinger but it's still a highly entertaining film.

IIRC the final showdown in the BOOK was Tiger Tanaka sending his Ninjas and Bond into a traditional japanese Castle (those pagoda-stack thingies) ... the Volcano isn't bad, but a true japanese Castle would have been gorgeous too!
I agree. It’s actually very enjoyable. Has a unique vintage style to it that in some ways aged well.
This is one of the best and the most imitated in the series . Great sets ,story ,action sequences . Great film for Sean to end with. Did not follow the book was made up except some names and locals . The film should have been nominated for set design and best song.

This was my very first 007 film, so it holds a special place in my heart. I loved how neat and tidy the rocket heists were, little Nelly was on my Christmas wish list for years, it inspired me to travel to Japan, and of course, become a ninja. This one, along with Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever are my favorite Connery Bond flicks.
I would give the score an 11/10. BY GOD IT'S GOOD
So, seven years later, as Connery's filming Zardoz, sitting in his trailer waiting for his call to set, and wearing a ridiculous red diaper outfit, was he thinking about the good old Bond days? "Sweet mercy. What have I done?"
I believe Zardoz is one of the movies his chesthair signed on for and he had to come with it for the ride... is there any other explanation possible? :D
Also if you believe Zardoz is his low point... have you never seen the Avengers movie (the Steed one, not the Marvel property) ??? Good GRIEF. And i even still like Fiennes in that one, but Connery? Give me a break

Yeah, seeing that outfit by itself is silly, but I watched Zardoz for the first time recently, and it's actually a pretty good movie, plus that outfit in context doesn't really seem all that silly 😁

The fight scene much earlier in the movie, (Bond fighting 'The Rocks' grandfather) is not only cool but one of the greatest fight sequence's in Bond history!
Just to nit-pick, Little Nellie is not a helicopter. It's an auto-gyro, or more commonly called a gyrocopter.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the "Gyrojet" rocket pistols and spearguns used in the film. They weren't props, but an actual product made by MB Associates in San Ramon, California. I used to work there and Bob Mainhardt (the "M" in "MBA") had a signed letter from the producers framed on his wall, thanking him for providing those products to the prop department.
Classic Bond! It is Sean Connery's " The Spy Who Loved Me" Blofeld is stunning.
Out of all the Connery Bond films, You Only Live Twice is my favorite followed by Gold Finger.

Not in my top 10 favourite Bond film, but an entertaining action romp, with a great Barry soundtrack. Iconic, Flawed and eye rolling to some, the film would be quasi remade far better a decade later with The Spy Who Loved Me.
This is my second favorite Bond film. To me it is very sexy and fun, with that memorable soundtrack. I brings me back to my childhood, and is kinda silly, which I have always loved about bond films.

Sean playing an asian aged super well. You can still do this nowadays without any consequences.
That is because Asian cultures aren't filled by a bunch of snowflakes like western cultures are, disrespect is an entirely different variety that westerners typically don't understand. Many films, like "The Hunted", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Black Rain", Rising Sun" were all considered Racist and/or disrespectful to Asian cultures; however, it is quite the opposite, they pretty much loved all those movies and praised them highly, the gaming community just went through something similar with "Ghosts of Tsushima" that ended up slaughtering "Last of Us 2"(sales and actual gamer reviews) which snowflakes and critics for some reason needed it to be a Masterpiece even though it was far from it with a lot of backlash from fans. Keep in mind 99% of the time the ones with their panties in a bunch are the White people that have nothing better to do in life, I still remember the recent "Tropic Thunder" RD Jr. controversy from people that don't understand comedy and consider any situation where a white person is wearing paint on the face is "Black Face" even though they don't seem to understand what it is or don't understand context, but water is wet in that regard, in our modern society we have too many overly sensitive "village idiots" that are un educated and weak minded individuals.
Its sad when you see Japan and South Korea turning into the new America and their cultures getting stronger while America is just becoming divided and non-sensical.

Donald Pleasance was a WW2 British fighter pilot.
This movie featured the Toyota 2000 GT. There was never a convertible version of this car sold, but they had to convert the one they had into a convertible so Sean Connery could fit in it.

The Connery/Bond which has grown on me the most over the years. Not the best aesthetically but a helluva lot of fun, something the Bond movies haven’t been in years. And a “listless” Connery is still way better than the other actors who have attempted to make 007 their own.

I liked it when the space shuttle are the other one, the karate fights were cool, and Donald Pleasance was awesome as Blofeld.
However, James Bond's new disguise if rather off.
I watched all the Bond films except for maybe one. The future looks dire in The Bond series. If they really do have a female Double Agent, they may as well start its own Series or she may be a partner to 007.

Little Nelly is an Autogyro, not a helicopter ;-) Only the propeller behind "Bond" is driven, the rotor above his head is rotating due to the air flowing past when it moves forward and develops lift that way.
It was nearly impossible to construct an actual helicopter of such small size that could still carry a man until the early 90s when "headless" constructions were pioneered as the original rotorhead required so many moving parts including a complicated gear structure to translate the pilot's commands on the stick and pedals to the rotor. thus the Autogyro. It also explains why Nelly took off with that "running start" you showed and from a proper airstrip/runway and not vertically like a helicopter could do... for that it requires actual self generated lift on the rotor, if Nelly stopped moving forward her rotor stops spinning and doing anything for lift.

Little Nellie is not a "Portable Helicopter". It's a GyroCopter. They were kind of a fad (Still popular) after Popular Mechanics wrote a DIY article about them. Also, Batman in the comics had one around the same time.. BatGyro I think it was called.. (Yes, I'm that old...lol)

6:07 what ever happened to those little helicopters? You never see them nowadays. Which is odd because they look really economical due to how light they are compared to a heavy old big helo.
Shame on you for not mentioning cinemaphotographer and aerial cameraman John Jordan whose lower leg was nearly severed completely by a Bell helicopter blade during one of the Little Nellie shoots in Japan. While Jordan was lucky that a conference of microsurgery doctors was taking place in a nearby town and gave him extraordinary care reattaching his foot, by the time he was flown back to London he was in such severe pain they had to amputate his leg below the knee.
He was amazingly innovative (and fearless) in designing a special parachute type harness attached under a Bell helicopter's skids allowing him to hang unencumbered under the helicopter with a 360 degree view of breathtaking scenes of the Alps and shooting the action scenes throughout "On Her Majesties Secret Service." Tragically, a he was killed in 1970 after falling some 2000ft from a helicopter while shooting the film "Catch-22." Nevertheless, Jordan set the bar with his cinematic contributions to the Bond franchise demanding impressive cinematography in every 007 film and should be remembered.

You Only Live Twice is quite remarkable in being a parody of Bond films created by the very team that was supposed to produce them.
I think my love for secret bases was born from this movie and other media that picked up on this. I wonder if the Batcave came about after this and there was a Harvey comic called SPY that had a base in the Statue of Liberty. I would draw cross sections like they had in the comics of my own secret bases. Good times...

When I found out that Roald Dahl wrote the script for this film, that explained a lot atleast it explained Little Nellie The Helicopter
I imagine Roald Dahl's suspense stories "Tales Of The Unexpected" were more of a factor here than his books for children.
The first 45 minutes is compelling and then it completely falls apart. But the volcano was cool.
this is admittedly my least favorite Bond movie of the 60s but i still really like it.
This was the third Bond film I ever watched after Goldfinger and Moonraker. I've always had a soft spot for it, and you said she just swam around but doesn't Kissy score a couple of kills in the final battle?

No mention of the iconic rooftop fight scene?
The first time I heard about this everyone was focusing on Bond's yellowface disguise they never said anything else about it. When I did get to see it it did turn out much better than everybody was said about it.
I think it's a little demeaning to Connery as an actor to rate his performance in this as tired, like he's not good enough to cover up the fact that he was done with the role itself. Remember, Bond himself is a cynical guy, and 5 films in the *character* has grown to be somewhat aloof and stand-offish. It doesn't take anything away from the quality of the movie, which to me is certainly Top 5 Bond, or Connery's performance in it.
I agree with many others, Seeing it as a kid, I loved the movie, is it the best bond, by far no. I do agree though the female actresses were gorgeous and seemed entirely wasted even rewatching it their beauty is quite striking and they should have had a bit more focus like some of the other movies using them a bit more.
