HOW TO: Setup NAT Port Forwarding Rules On ASUS RT-AX & RT-AC WiFi Routers

- If your hosting a game server or trying to connect to a peer-to-peer online game you will more than likely need to set up port forwarding rules on your router. Never fall in to the trap of opening all your ports or enabling DMZ, while this may allow you to connect, it will leave you wide open to probing attacks.

I cant get the port forwarding to work, I'm doing the exact same things you're doing. I need some help!
same i think if you plugged into a modem /routur combo it wont work
same here trying to port foward for minecraft followed everything in the tutorial and cant get a outside connection other than LAN
hi, trying to make an mc server but the port forwarding doesnt work no one can join. maybe ive done it work becuase i dont really understand how it works but i have seen 5 videos and everyone says the same but it still doesnt work. if you could help me out here that would be awesome. and i have the RT-AX92U
How do you set up port forwarding for the game war thunder on steam?
I have the COD Warzone details but am not sure if I need to add the TCP alone or both the TCP and UDP. Can you please let me know. Cheers
UDP. UDP is a much faster protocol and is used by game servers. The difference between TCP and UDP is, TCP will request dropped packets to be resent and put the packets back in order as the data is downloaded (this would create latency problems), UDP will just continue to send packets one after the other in order and ignore dropped packets.
The port forward settings disappear after I put them in. It's on the most current FW. I tried rebooting the router. I did a factory reset. Nothing works. I've had this router for 3 months. (Once I switch pages on the router and go back to the port forward tab the settings are gone). I'm trying to make a SWAT 4 server with ports 10480 and 10487. Asus RT-AX58U
I have been trying to setup a dedicated 7 days to die server for some time now. I can't seem to get it to work no matter what I do. Using the Asus TUF-AX5400 Router and I tried the portforwarding and not even myself can access the server. I talked to my ISP and I set my IP to public but nothing changes. I have my main computer on and my Server computer hooked so the source IP is set to my server computer..
Hi! Your guide is very helpful, but what if in the same place (WAN and virtual server/port forwarding) instead of port forwarding list like yours i have Port range? (No external port and Internal Port) I tried to use 25565:25567, but it doesnt work for me :( And yea i didnt change the port in server properties
just type 25565:25567 in the internal port field, see 02:45. if you still have no luck, get me some more detail.
@@MadAboutTutorials ye well i guess i have problems somewhere else. Thanks so much for help tho!
@@vatskiysas I assume your friends are trying to connect to your public IP address. Some ISP's terminate your connection at the node, more common with wireless connections, meaning that you share a public ip address with your neighbours
@@MadAboutTutorials I remade the server and now i can connect to my own server with IP. I think i solved the problem ty for help!
@@MadAboutTutorials did you not read his comment? it doesn’t say internal port range says source target port range and local port, same brand ASUS, granted a little too old perhaps.. I can’t find this info anywhere and right when I read his comment I thought I finally found info! Nooooooooooo
add profile doesnt show up for me can anybody help with that
Thanks, friend. One little thing though: a DMZ only puts the device on said "DMZ" out to the wolves. Everything else is behind the router's firewall.
Thanks for the reply. I get that, but people generally don't lock that device down and tend to leave other accounts logged in and credentials lying around, leaving gaping holes in their network for the bad guys to exploit. DMZ shouldn't be used in my oppinion, just open the ports you need.
@@MadAboutTutorials True.
I'm a bit confused. I have AX86U, and the port forwarding also seems to be available in the "game boost" menu, in there you can select "manual" port forwarding.
Would I HAVE to do port forwarding in the WAN section instead?
Hi can i know how to set up port fwd for asus DSL-N12E_C1,need help to set up for Minecraft

my screens are different than yours, can you do an updated video?
I'll see if I can find a newer version of the firmware. Thanks for letting me know.
Can u mqke a video for ax-82u (ax-5400) asus router for gta an modern warfare warzone plz thank u
sorry for the late reply, I should be able to put something together.
Do u have to disabled upnp for this to work
does not work for me, all port checker websites say the ports are lcosed
any way you could do a video on asus gtax11000 to get rid of double NAT for Xbox when there is an AImesh. No one can explain it. THanks!
sorry for the late reply, I'll look into it.
@@MadAboutTutorials looks like asus had an update that allows fullcone which seems to solve the issue
@@Joshphs1 thanks for the update.
I am strugling to connect my osciloscope via internet with port forwarding. My osciloscope is owon xds3064e (page 115 in manual) and my router is asus RT-AC1200G+. I tried everything the owon software does not seem to find the ip adress and the port that i configure on my osc and my router. The configuration page looks the same as yours. Maybe you have any ideas... i am sure that i do something wrong. Thank you
thanks for your comment. I've looked over the manual and I see a problem with step 1, it says to plug a network cable directly from the oscilloscope to the LAN port on your PC. It should say to plug both your PC and oscilloscope in to a network switch / router. Can I first confirm if you have a switch between the two devices.
WFX_Malice WFX_Malice hello, thanks for your response. Well in the manual has multiple ways of connection. I need the one “connect through a router”. So the osciloscope will be connected to my router and i can acces it from a pc over the internet. (This is what i need). I do not have a switch installed. Only my router. For configuration i have plugged bowth osciloscope and pc to the same router
WFX_Malice i have then disconnected my pc and tried to acces the osciloscope from another pc not in my local network. Using internet and the ip that i have set in the router software and in the osciloscope menu. And also using the 3000 port. Over the internet it does not work. Only over the lan. If pc and osc bowth connected (via utp cable) to the same router if i try to acces osc from pc it works.
@@3mariusx Good, so it works inside your network, its just the external. First thing to check is the protocol on your port forwarding, I would suggest using "both" because the manual doesn't specify TCP or UDP (once you've got it working, you can modify this using trial and error to determine which one you need). Next, confirm the rule is pointing to the oscilloscope's IP. Now for the external part. You need to access the oscilloscope using your public IP, this is different to the Local IP you set earlier, if you're not sure what your public IP address is, go to google on your home network and type "what's my ip".
This is where port forwarding does it's magic. You're able to connect to multiple devices using a single IP address, the port will direct you to the correct device. eg your printer could be port 5500 your oscilloscope port 3000, IP camera port 2200...
WFX_Malice hmm good info. Thank you! I will look into it today and get back to you.
Had been good if you said HOW you know of the certain ports for certain games...
I have problem with my Nintendo Switch. It will NOT stay in 'NAT A', but will go to 'NAT D', just randomly. But it's mostly on 'NAT D'.. And the only way to get it MORE in the A, sometimes also in B, is to also activate the 'DMZ' to the Switch's IP-address. But you say (in beginning) that's a bad thing?
I’m having issues with my Nintendo Switch as well. I’ve tried everything i’ve seen online to get out of Nat type D and nothing’s worked so far. Have you been able to figure it out?
@@jay8443 I found ONE piece of information, which was VERY hard to find.. If you have satellite, or mobile (4G), internet, then you can *NOT* have 'NAT A'. Which is strange...
But if you just get a static (fixed) IP-address on your Switch (the manuell option), then you get 'NAT B' (which is the *BEST* connection for those, like me, that have satellite or mobile internet).
Just like with satellite and mobile internet, you'll get 'NAT B' with static (fixed) IP-address with the other ways to get internet too (fiber, ADSL, etc).
@@SweboySMM2 I also found out that some ISP have what’s called a CGNAT which presents some issues (such as inability to port forward inbound traffic), but does not create issues with multiplayer games in general. Also, adding a router (or any device) within your LAN will have no effect on your carriers NAT as it is downstream. AT&T is an example of this sort of issue
I have open NAT on my xbox one s. I am experiencing a lot of in game lag and high latency for a game by the name of apex legends. My router is an asus rt-ac88u. I have 1gig bandwidth through my IP. Any help would be much appreciated. I've already prioritized my xbox manually and I tried using automatic qos as well. No help there either.
Unfortunately, that is apex summed up its a poorly optimised game. If you have gigabit internet and open nat your networking is good. Things to try: use a wired network in your home, cat5e cable or better, if you have to use wifi make sure you have gigabit wifi, try changing the channel you use (neighbouring wifi networks may be on the same channel). Reduce the graphics settings on the game (reducing shadows and reflections can help). Check you're connecting to a server in your region, if you're lobbying with people in other regions you may be connecting to a distant server.
If this doesn't help, get back to me with some more details.
How would I go about changing the channel I use? I live in a downtown area so this is might be the issue and I'd like to check. Thanks again.
Dougie was fresh when he asked that question… lol
What about for qbittorent ?
Hi I want to set up port fwd for an Huawei N5368X, need help to set it up for minecraft
Hi, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, YT hid your comment. There is little information on the internet on this router and I'm unable to get a emulator to see the GUI for myself. But from what I can see, the steps are the same as this video. from the home screen choose SECURITY, then PORT FORWARDING, click ADD ITEM, set Type to USER-DEFINE, Protocol as TCP, leave remote host blank, Remote port to 25565, Local Host is the local IP address of the machine hosting the server (10.0.0.XXX or 192.168.0.XXX), Local Port to 25565, set status to ENABLE and click SUBMIT, your done. Thanks for stopping by.
Why UPNP ON? if u open ports manual shut be OFF
when i try to join a minecraft server it just says permission denied and i cant join it please help me i have the GT-AX11000
where does it say "permission denied"? how are you trying to connect and how are you trying to connect?
@@MadAboutTutorials i was able to fix it by port forwarding my ip
ive done this and it still doesnt work my friend tried to connect using my ipv4 public ip subnet mask and even my default gateway i dont think i will ever work this out

am trying to port forward my rt-ax82u to open nat type and I cant

how possible forward ports 80 and 443 ?
do u know how port forward for pi server in asus router??
What server are you running on your pi?
@@MadAboutTutorials 31400-31409
@@nareshsapkota Sorry, I thought you were looking to set a server up on a raspberry pi and forward ports to it. What you are actually trying to do is set up a Pi node server for crypto? If so, from the documentation I found online, this server uses ports 31400 to 31409. Follow the instructions at 2:49, but replace 25565:25567 with 31400:31409 leave the protocol as TCP and set the internal IP to the private IP of your pi server. Hope this helps.
I also have an Asus router but my menu looks different, there is no 'create profile' button
What model is your Asus router?
I am also having the same issue except my model is the AX 11000
I just solved the issue recently. My model is the RT-AC86U but basically going into that menu on the website they reworded some stuff.
I was doing this to set up a Minecraft server and this is how I did it.
I left Source IP blank.
Made the port range between two values like 25564:25565.
Made the local IP my IP which I found by opening cmd and typing ipconfig.
and Local port to a specific value like 25565.
I also made sure the protocol was set to 'both' so both TCP and UDP was being used.
@@trydodis690 but also mine is a different page
@@trydodis690 I can do it from the Open NAT, but when I try to test it, it can’t be seen. I got it to work once and then I installed a plug-in for the server and then it didn’t work again
what do i put in the internal ip address please help
put the local IP address of the machine the server or application is hosted on. If its a windows PC, go to "cmd" (command prompt and type "ipconfig" look for IPv4 address, if its a Linux machine, go to terminal and type "ifconfig". this is the address you want to enter in to internal IP. Don't forget to go to your routers DHCP and set that IP as static for that machine, otherwise it will change next time you turn off your PC. Thank you! It worked for me.
Did that and wasn't able to get an open nat on warzone for pc. Still says maderate. Router is an Asus ac5300. Cannot for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong
Tutorial uploaded, ua-cam.com/video/2XtL8E3Vwm0/v-deo.html Hope that helps.
My issue was that I did not set the particular device (my PC) to use those ports. It's not enough to set them up and forward them, you have to tell the network to use those ports for a particular device.
did anybody know what to put fod call fo duty cold war on the external and internal ports?
How do i close ports from accessing?
ports should be closed by default
im trying to host an mc server i have an asus router and the ui is the same as the one in the video. i've tried many fixes even disabling my firewall but none of them work. im almost certain its something to do with my internet provider but one of my friends uses the same provider and he can host it so if anyone knows a fix pls lmk
it could be how your isp is supplying your connection. in some instances your ISP is terminating your connection at the node or exchange, subneting and port forwarding your connection already. Contact your ISP to see if this connection is possible with your connection, ask if your connection is terminated before your router. Let me know how you go.
@@MadAboutTutorials alright thanks
Request for - MAC and IP Address Binding import from the command line +asus +routers -RT-AX3000
Ill see what I can come up with
looks like this is possible, these routers are Linux based, so accessing the terminal shell can be done with an application like Putty. you will first need to enable terminal on your router (mycyberuniverse.com/linux/enable-telnet-on-the-asus-rt-n12e-lx-router.html) then use the shell to access bussybox (mycyberuniverse.com/linux/full-controling-the-asus-router-via-command-line.html). I don't own one of these routers, so I'm unable to test out these commands, I'll try some of my other routers to see if they have a similar file structure.

Malice can the protocol be both tcp udp so that i dont have to add another additional profile
allowing both, wont stop the fort forwarding from working, but its always best practice only to open what you need.

For some reason it wont work for my Minecraft server
NAT (network address translation) is NOT the same as port forwarding. What you show in your video is simple port forwarding.
Correct, in the commercial environment, on routers such as Cisco, NAT takes on a whole new meaning. In the home environment, basic port forwarding is labeled as NAT, Port Triggering and Port Translation. Many consumer grade routers list NAT as the port forwarding option, so its best to keep the video relevant to the audience. Thanks for watching.
still cant get it to work with minecraft it will let me join but not my friends
Are your friends joining using your public IP? They can't join off your local IP. Search "what's my IP" on Google.
Can u do a beamnp tutorial for these routers??
what is beamnp?
That was a weird Wuhan tourette's thing you did there... 😯
Haha, I do weird things.
Why I still can't open the MInecraft Server
I'm using RT-AC68U, I try more time still can't open Minecraft server
If you're connecting from outside your network, connect using your Public IP address not your Local IP. Go to google and type "what's my IP", if you're using anything but the default port of 25565 you will need to add it to the end of your public IP in the connection screen eg 110.25.177.97:25567. Keep in mind that your ISP may have you set up to lease your IP through DHCP, meaning that every time you restart or reset your router, you may get a different Public IP. If you regularly host servers, contact your ISP and ask them if they can assign you a Static IP, that way it will never change.
