- We decided to buy and try these tiny 80w COB video lights.
Many brands available out there. From Smallrig, Ulanzi, Andoer, etc... but we decided to give this unbranded ZU-80 a try.
Here is our first impressions as mentioned in the video.
UPDATE 1:
Upon further testing, the power rating of the COB light seems to be limited at the voltage level.
During the time of test when we used a 12v battery pack, the lowest voltage we got when loaded was about 11.6volts, and somehow that seems to limit the LED output to about 1.2amps current draw, as mentioned in the video.
However, when we used a 13.8v LiFEPO4 battery pack, the current delivery at 12.6v load can demand a peak current at 5.2amps, depending on the colour temperature settings. (Because different temperatures uses different COB array for mixing).
At 5600K temperature, 12.6v operating voltage, the unit drew about 4.6amps. That is close to 58watts of power, more like a 60w COB rating, still below the 80w figure.
We will try out a 14.4v or 16.8v (peak) Vmount battery pack and observe the amp draw again to see if it can really hit 80w of COB LED output.
UPDATE 2:
After using once for a proper video shoot, we realised that the true colour temperatures on the ZU80 are way off from the LCD display. Who would have thought its not accurate unless you're experienced to visually tell! We're not complaining as we know how to deal with colour variations, but its a cheap China kit with no standards to follow, so buyer beware, you pay for what you get.
2800K on the ZU80 = 2660K on the Sekonic C500 Colour Meter
3200K on ZU80 = 2780K on Sekonic C500
4500K on ZU80 = 3400K on Sekonic C500
5600K on ZU80 = 4030K on Sekonic C500
7500K on ZU80 = 4800K on Sekonic C500
