  • Hi!
    So this is a little video about making medieval hose and I really hope you will enjoy it!
    Just a little warning first:
    I am not an expert in historical costuming, even if I am talking in the video like I am 100% sure, I am not. So don't take everything I say too seriously. I am just a happy beginner that want's to share what I've learned and I hope some things might be interesting for you, but if there is some uncertainty, please ask, and If you want to continue learning more, I have written some links I think can be interesting for you below.

    Elin: *literally just wraps the fabric around her leg and foot and cuts appropriately*

    So?? Are they still comfortable even with the seam under the foot?

    • @ChocolateWitch13
      @ChocolateWitch13 5 років тому +32

      A seam around the foot is less noticeable then a seam running along the foot and up the heel, those kinds of seams can be uncomfortable since you put a lot of weight there when being on your feet doing activities, also depends on how sensitive your feet are. I step the wrong way on the grate in my shower and my heel will be bruised for days or wearing fishnets for an evening, the net really bits after a few hours. And one more thing, how good and even you make your seams will make a big difference, if they are clunky and stiff they won't be that nice to step on.

      I'm sorry I haven't seen your comment! Yes they were! I wore them during a whole week this summer and they worked perfectly. My feet have quite high arches so I'm not really walking on the seams though, so I can't really tell if it work for everybody.

    I love this tutorial! I'm about to make myself a new pair of hose. I have one made in mix of wool and silk and they're very soft. The problem I have with the medieval lady hose is that they can somehow limit normal blood circulation. So I made myself also a wool pair of man hose :) I don't know if these were worn by women but I guess you can't really see them under the kirtle :)

      Hi, I know you made this comment several years ago, but could I ask you what you mean about the hose restricting blood flow? Does it compress and push blood out of your feet and legs? Or does it cause more of an issue with blood pooling in the feet? Or something else, haha

    I just found your channel a few days ago and love it so far. Hope you are still doing videos! I am involved with historical re-enactment but a vastly different time period - 18th & early 19th century. I have had to come up with my own patterns for many things as they simply do not exist! I have started seeing more for my time period but not enough. So, it is really interesting to me to watch you make things like the hose. I will keep it in mind when I want to make a pair of high top moccasins!! I know and have made moccasins before but have never attempted the legging part so how you came up with your pattern was ingenious.

    You make it look so doable! I could have a seam across middle of under foot as have a high inseam, but down length on bottom of foot where put most of weight on heel and ball of foot seem like would feel discomfort. I might try and put seam to edge of foot.

    Really interesting! But just to be clear, can't medieval hose / stockings be knit (by hand)? As for that I'm more skilled & have materials easily on hand; but I guess knitted hose / socks only became a bit later? But whenever they did, they seem to have taken the world by a storm, from what I've understood, having read stories of e.g. queen Elizabeth I of trying silk stockings and crying that she'll never go back to linen cut stockings, as knit stockings / hose were so much more comfortable, malleable & leg-fitting :)

    • @elinabrahamsson9442
      @elinabrahamsson9442  6 місяців тому

      Knitting was indeed becoming popular much later. Sewn hose was used up until the 18th century among working classes. There are some needlebound stockings from the period though, even if they didn't seem to have been that common.

    I don’t think I could pin so close to my body. I like to sew but have a fear of needles

    Did women actually wear these? I know this was 99% worn by males, but either it isnt depicted in art as you mentioned or I think women didnt really wear that.

      Women had hose like that, they're just not very visible under long dresses. The women's hose were held on with ribbons/tapes tied under or just above the knee.
