Males are smaller than females and the eggs usually all hatch at the same time. Harris hawks are highly intelligent and social birds of prey, an exception in the raptor world.
You people calling a bird of prey stupid aren’t too bright yourselves, these birds are highly intelligent and if there’s one that’s not getting fed as much as the others due to normal aggression that teaches them to survive in the wild, it will be fed while the others are asleep. I work with these beautiful birds and help rehab them and train them. This is an awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Hmm, I'm not sure. I didn't watch them on live cam 24h but I also think that they are stupid in that aspect. If the food isn't plenty and enough for all they feed only the bigger chicks, and smaller chicks getting smaller and weaker until they die at the end. If the mother make equal portions in the days when the food is not so much all of the chicks will survive. But they overfeed bigger when smaller starving. It is really stupid. Thats why the human is on the top of the nature, because is much smarter than all other animals.
I’m watching from a human perspective, so I’m bound to infuse some of my empathic emotions into the mix. Would have been better if the chick understood your logic, because it didn’t seem to, look at how it pushed to the front in an attempt to get some food. PS: would you care to share some links in regards to the smaller ones being fed when the bigger ones are asleep? because judging by this video, that can’t be entirely true, for the bigger chicks were wide awake when the smaller one was fed.🤷🏻♂️
The one sitting down in the front looks bigger, but she’s fed the most. Besides, if that’s the case the mother should have fed half the carcass to the smallest chick then. Just because you bigger doesn’t mean you are immune to hunger.🤷🏻♂️

I am not calling them stupid but they are not quite bright. If there was ranking for animal intelligence they would most likely be 4/10-5/10
