- In this episode I demonstrate, to beginners, how to make extra grass tuft scenery and the completion of the final feature trees for the HO Scale Diorama Shelf Layout. Tree spinning tutorial here @ 6:00.
Boomer, your videos are drop-dead gorgeous. I enjoy every clip and I'm learning new tricks...
Thank You! I'm happy to hear you are benefitting from them. Cheers.
Stationary trees: I wish we could move too
Spinning trees: okay, Boomer
Learning a lot. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us!
My pleasure!
My grandfather 4ever dc 302 told me to watch your channel to help me with my starter layout
Welcome to the shelf layout guild . . . lol. We are happy to have you aboard. If you go to the video tab and scroll back chronologically you will find lots of tutorials as well. Cheers. ~ Boomer.
Thanks Boomer. I just got a Static grass applicator. First thing I’m going to use it for. Cheers 🍻. love the tutorials.
That is an essential tool to have when it comes to modelling scenery. Good stuff. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing. I see what you mean on the trees. You could airbrush rust or orange on the needles to represent dead parts of the tree. Or just leave it. It still looks awesome. I tried the parchment paper. Man does that work well. And I can scale it down for N scale. But the best part is you can even add bushes, junk, garbage, flowers, Chunk of broken concrete with rebar sticking out. Thanks for sharing. .
Yes . . . the parchment paper works wonders for convertible scenery. Cheers.
That method for your grass fields on the parchment paper...holy $&*%!!! That’s a brilliant idea! Thank you for sharing! I’ve seen small grass tufts done, but never really seen a full field done that way; I like it! Again, your knowledge and vision of various modelling methods is amazing! Really thinking “outside” of the box...and it’s worth it! Cheers Boomer!
Thank You! That's what I love about this hobby. Almost anything goes. I like trying different things all the time. Besides, what's the rush . . . we are all just having fun anyway . . . so why not take risks now-and-again, and try and make things more visually immersive and impactful. Cheers. ~ Boomer.
Nice work. I really do need to give this a try. Thanks and stay safe. Cheers - Larry
You should! I'm waiting for an update on your layout Larry. Cheers.
Thanks Boomer, another great video. As I've said, watching you is so inspiring. I've even got myself another airbrush and I'll be playing to get different effects on my current diorama. Cheers
The airbrush can transform a layout overnight. It pays for every model railroader to learn how to use one, even if it is just to save paint. Cheers.
Boomer your the bomb":,you know when your out and about".The old cedar leaning over is something you see all over canada and the u.s. mountains, but not here in Nebraska, haha.Luckily i've seen that to know what you are going for, it will look so natural also. No one thinks of those little nuances.Great job,I cant wait until your next video,I check for them daily.
Thank You Troy! I appreciate your comments and observations. Thanks for the sub by the way! Cheers. ~ Boomer.
This is awesome.
Thank You! Cheers. ~ Boomer.
Top notch Boomer! Think I'll try parchment instead of the wax paper I've been using. Cheers.
It works great! Cheers.
Thanks Boomer ... another fine 🙂 tutorial on the small stuff that takes a up close type layout over the top on WOW factor ...
Thank You too Brian. It's amazing what a few modelled trees will do for a layout. Cheers.
just subscribed after finding a really good video you did. You have fantastic tips and learning curves. I have been in this hobby most of my 71 years but I am learning all this new stuff. What do you use to thin Timya paint?
Awesome, thank you! I use (cheap) 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to thin Tamiya paint. You can use any strength you want. I use 99% because it works out better economically if I want to thin the alcohol with water as well. Cheers. ~ Boomer.
great video as usual but i got a chuckle at your printed comment about 4.5 minutes in fear of trees, do a desert scene Lol i am doing a desert scene ! im modeling a prototype town in the owens valley of california and there is not one tree for a zillion miles and i love your vids on trees! anyway boomer and god can make a tree but what about a sagebrush? Lol. woodland scenics doesnt even make sage colored anything, so i am using your tree techniques and acrylic paint experiments to make sagebrush. there is some grass though. fortunately, i use O scale Lol best wishes and thank you
I would love to model a "desert" layout from Southern California. Painting all the rich mineral colors would be fun to reproduce. Mojave SP yard comes to mind with the overpass at each end. Cheers. ~ Boomer.
Stationary trees: I wish we could move too
Spinning trees: okay, Boomer
😀😂😀😂
It's tough to animate trees for sure. Maybe a strong fan would work . . . lol.
omg i got my chemo port flushed today and the nurse let me have the unused flush syringes, they throw them away regardless, altho i have ordered pippettes last night lol but who know what will work better, ive become a hoarder i guess, i cornered the market on coffee stirres for wood alreadt
Lol . . . O.K. bud . . . Cheers.
I tried this and it came out looking like a lint screen
They take some practice. My first ones were not that great. My latest ones are awesome.
A woman, ChriZANdri Roth has no trees on her layout. All desert because she modeled her track on her surroundings. She lives in the central north of Namibia, southwest Africa.
Equally, desert scenery has a beauty of it's own as well. I can imagine all the earth tones one could apply to bring it all to life. For me, it would be a painters dream. Cheers.
This is a technique I've never seen before. Great work and thanks for the helpful tips!
You are welcome! Cheers.
Boomer.seen the grandson subbed, nice. If ya fall back on my playlist you can see his starter layout beginning. Thanks for what your doing🚂🇨🇦
Thanks for the sub! I'll check it out. Cheers.
Where did you get the Garbage bins? Were they scratch built?
Yes. See them here: ua-cam.com/video/kzAgmW6uykE/v-deo.html
I was traveling last week and fell behind! I’m going to have to go back to the blackberry bushes if that’s where you talk about the soil and parchment paper. I just ordered the same static grass applicator, looking forward to using it!
Oh Wow! You picked up a static grass applicator - good for you! Yes, the parchment paper was introduced in the 'Creating Realistic Model Scenery | The Wicked Blackberry Bush: Part 3.' Cheers.
Thanks Boomer always wondered about how that is done to look right. the dirt is the key I think again layers layers layers. I think that is the big thing I have learned over the last few months. Neil
When it comes to scenery there is no rush really. I will lay down a layer and then move onto something else. Then I will revisit the scene again, analyze it in a new light, and then put in another layer. You can see this progression when you go back and view some of the earlier content on the layout. Cheers.
If i spray ipa in the ground and over the grass, the glue will solves and glue it in place?
What is "ipa"? Wet the grass first, then apply diluted glue so it wicks into the texture.
@@boomerdiorama IPA as i see in others videos, is Isopropyl Alcohol, we don't use this short name here in Brazil.
@@leonardosouza6290 I don't use IPA to glue with. I use it to pre-soak with, then add water (diluted) glue. The IPA helps reduce the resistance of the scenery material so the glue penetrates the textured material better.
@@boomerdiorama Thank's man, i figured it becouse is a thick layer or glue and IPA is liquid!
I liked so, i saved im my playlist!
Very easy and cheeper then store bought scenery mats.
It sure is.
What gauge wire do you use on the branches on this video?
The guage is 26 guage "Green Wire" from Michaels Kraft Store. I like to use the lighter guage for most of the smaller branches, and the heavier for lower limbs depending on the tree you model. Cheers.
I don't seen the list' feed the cat' & 'pet the cat' LOL
The cat (Dusty) is on probation ( as she snickers at me) . . . right now. She snubbed all the food I stock piled and relapsed into "Fancy Feast" . . . the crack of Kittie vittles.
Mr. Model Wizard
Got to love those trees! A challenge for sure but well worth it. Even half a dozen will have a dramatic impact on any layout. Cheers ~ Boomer
Best tip, put dirt down first before static grass, that's something I wished I had done before making my strips. Only done a few, but will be adding soil and dry brushing for tones in future, top notch Boomer. All the best. Brian @ The Angels
Thank You. Cheers.
Does the dirt sharpen the scissors while cutting the paper? Just wondering ... lol
@@hondachopper6978 She won't believe it Karl . . . lol. It probably dulls them, which is why I might be put on probation for using them this way . . . lol. Cheers.
Great job, like the way you do grass thars a different way to build trees, looks neat and simple.
Thank You. Once you get into the rhythm it is fairly simple and they turn out looking fantastic. Well worth the effort for the shelf layout. Cheers.
Como é o nome desse papel???
😁
@@boomerdiorama what is the name of this paper
Good work 👍
Thank You!
