    Bertha reminds me so much of my Mema! She'll be 92 in March...

    December 12, 1977, the day that Match Game ‘77 returned to the afternoons after a six week failed experiment in the mornings. It was the beginning of the end.

    H/H match update:
    ...
    ~~~Today's action:
    Time ran out yesterday after our champ's second audience match, but before her first head-to-head question (she struck out with the audience on her first attempt). Incidentally, I believe yesterday's was the first show ever to have TWO audience match questions and ZERO head-to-head questions. (I don't formally track this, so I may be mistaken. If not unique, it's certainly unusual at least.)
    As I predicted yesterday, she chooses Richard for her shot at $2,500.
    This is now King Richard's tenth consecutive time to answer the H/H question. He's also on quite the hot streak, having matched the past four times in a row!
    Stats: Richard has matched 120 of his 272 most recent attempts (44.1%), 59 of his last 132 attempts (44.7%), 40 of his last 88 attempts (45.5%), and 12 of his past 24 attempts (50.0%). His overall success rate is *42.5%* and this is his 750th attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: Patti has matched 1 of her 2 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Richard has matched 318 of his 749 attempts (42.5%), and Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%). Neither David Doyle nor Juliet Prowse has yet had a shot at a H/H question.
    *Today's H/H question: "________Circle"*
    (Hmm. Full circle? Come full circle? Perfect circle? Academic circle? Artistic circle? Closed circle? Virtuous circle? Social circle? Sewing circle? Knitting circle? Quilting circle? Nothing jumps out at me. If I were standing on that stage right now, I'd probably have a nervous breakdown. If I were the star writing, I'd definitely check in with Patti and anyone else who had a suggestion! - I'll say "Come full circle" but I don't have high hopes today.)
    Not too surprisingly, the camera captures the contestant briefly seeming to say "That's a tough one!" with her expression. And Richard is indeed reading Patti's suggestion(s). Back to the champion who's resting her chin against her fist, as if struggling to think. Richard finishes his answer. His expression seems to convey the same feeling I have: There isn't a lot of hope today. Still, we've had plenty of unexpected matches in the past!
    Our champ seems to have drawn a blank. She gives the unlikely answer "Small" circle. The audience softly groans.
    One of Richard's verbalized suggestions sounds good to me: "Semi-" But his card says "Full" which was my first thought, although I ultimately went for "Come full" circle. I wonder if they would have deemed that a match? Technically, it shouldn't be, but you never know.
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~~~
    David Doyle played the part of the "villainess" again today when he "Threw up" instead of "Tinkled" for our champion. She departs after winning two games and $450.
    *Today's audience match question: "Day of **________** "*
    (My thoughts: Reckoning, the Dead, the Jackal) - I'm too lazy to check if these all fit with a 1977 question though.
    The celebs: Richard (Locusts), David (Redemption), Juliet (the week)
    The choice: Locusts (I would have taken Juliet's answer!)
    The answers: Reckoning (Ha!), The Dolphin, The Jackal (Ha!)
    Good gravy, Marie! I guessed two of the answers, but was swayed by Juliet's logical sounding suggestion and picked the wrong answer. More importantly, our new champion also struck out on the audience match, and with Richard's suggestion, too. (But in defense of the champion, none of the celebrity suggestions was up there.)
    This marks the *third* audience match fail this week (along with 1111 and 1113), and the eleventh in the past nine weeks! To me, this demonstrates that the AM questions have gotten a bit tougher in recent months, compared to the past.
    This also marks one more occasion when Richard was called on first and gave a suggestion not found on the audience match board. (I began tracking these when I got sick of hearing Richard scolding contestants for not "trusting" him with the audience match. To his credit, he hasn't done it for a while now.) Here's the list just since episode 900: Episodes 901, 902, 906, 911, 914, 921, 923, 927, 949, 975, 977, 978, 980, 981, 989, 997, 1004, 1005, 1013, 1040, 1077, 1079, 1086, 1089, 1104, 1106, 1111, and 1114.
    ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Richard - 42.4% (318 wins in 750 attempts).
    Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1114, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
    If the customer of that bank had tried to pass that check again he'd have a world of trouble. He might have gotten away with it but the Feds would have caught up with him in a hurry.
    The majority of contestants are young, pretty women, so Bertha is unusual, but they occasionally mixed into older people, men and minorities. I just noticed this watching reruns, and watched it back in the 70s but as a teen I didn't take notice.
      Also back when we measured people's value by way of traits that TRANSCEND today's identity nonsense...you notice everyone's identity in these shows today because the loonies have conditioned you to do so because more important values/traits are BIG trouble for their political agenda...
    Charlene’s hair is beautiful - so long and that color! I saw another episode with Bertha and she won a game and had to sit down after doing the celebrity match portion. Gene and cast members were very solicitous and caring toward her. She was a very sweet lady, as we can see.
      I wouldn't be surprised. Seems like some people made a habit of going on game shows. First, there's Darlene Landon. She was on Match game in 76 and won over $22,000. Oddly, she was on the Dating Game with Richard in 72. They won a trip to the Bahamas. When she was on Match, they didn't acknowledge each other. I think she shows up in episode 717, 1976. Then there's Marcy Schneidmiller. She was on MG 77. She won over $16,000. She ended up on Family Feud twice in 1994.
