H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... We're up to week 225 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on November 13, 1977, and originally aired in late December of 1977 (Dec. 21-23 & 27-28), so there will undoubtedly be some Christmas spirit and Christmas-themed questions. (I'm wondering if the panel felt weird talking about the holidays and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas when it was only November 13th to them? Nah, they're all actors used to playing a part!) Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and it's an all-veteran panel once again, with another MG family member making his final appearance this week: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg returns for her 70th week (of 90). Fannie last visited in episodes 1101 to 1105 and her track record when it comes to matching in the head-to-head questions is excellent - 48.4% (15 matches in 31 attempts). Incidentally, for fans of Fannie (of which I am one), this is the first of three consecutive weeks we'll see her on the panel! ~~~Elaine Joyce is back for her 20th week (of 26 total). Elaine made her debut in episode 46 way back in 1973, and most recently filled in some blanks in episodes 1071-1075. (As of today she is one of only two female celebrity to have sat in all three "female" seats on the panel - Loretta Switt is the other. But that will change next week when Fannie joins that group, stay tuned... ) When it comes to the H/H, Elaine has only answered one question, but she matched! ~~~Last but not least, Ron Palillo is back for his fifth and final week on the Match Game '7x panel. He made his debut in episode 706, and most recently visited in episodes 966-970. Will he be called on for a H/H question on this his final week? Last week there were only four H/H questions, and for the fourth consecutive week, King Richard answered them all, matching once. Reviewing the past 79 weeks, Richard has played *337* times. Everyone else combined played *52* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 11, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an amazing *86.6%* of all the H/H questions over these past 79 weeks. Richard starts the week off with a very good track record of having matched 42.4% of his H/H questions, which is slightly ahead of Brett's accuracy score (42.3%). They have traded places well over a dozen times over the years. I wouldn't be surprised if they switch places again at some point in the future. With the past four consecutive weeks being all-Richard H/H weeks, I'm really hoping it's time we get to see at least one other star answer a H/H question. My top pick would be Elaine Joyce. She's only been chosen once for a H/H question (in her 95 shows so far), but she did match that one time! I also think Ron Palillo is a great guest panelist, one who fits in well with panel, plays well, and is entertaining. I'd love to see him become the 39th Match Game '7x celeb to score a H/H match before he leaves the show for the last time. Also, if Brett were to match one question, she would pull ahead of Richard again in overall accuracy for the umpteenth time. Of course, I'm never sad when Charles has a moment in the H/H spotlight (even if he usually seems reluctant to play), and it's always a joy to watch Miss Fannie Flagg answer a head-to-head question. Such a wealth of choices, it seems like a waste when Richard answers (practically) every question. Yes, he's good at matching, but his track record shows that he's far from the best when it comes to actually matching the contestants for the big money. ~~~Today's action: The challenger whiffed an easy second-round question, allowing the champion to win her third victory with only the single match she had earned in the first round on the previous show. *Today's audience match question: "Noah________"* (My thoughts: -'s Ark, ???, ???) - I'm drawing a blank on this name question. I can't think of a single celebrity or well-known figure in 1977 named Noah other than the Biblical Noah. The celebs: Richard (-'s Ark), Brett (Beery), Fannie via Richard (Dietrich) The choice: She wisely takes the obvious answer. She deserves the $500 today after striking out on the audience match last time. The only suspense now is what are the other two answers going to be? The answers: Webster (Duh!), Beery, 's Ark All right. To recap, this champion picked Richard for her first H/H, but they didn't match. Her second Super-Match was a complete bust. Now today, I'm sure she'll give Richard another shot. Indeed. This is now King Richard's 16th consecutive time answering the H/H question, and he's matched 2 of his past 6 times which is a bit below par for him overall, but that recent blip doesn't erase the fact that he's definitely been on a hot streak over the past five weeks or so. Stats: Richard has matched 122 of his 278 most recent attempts (43.9%), 61 of his last 138 attempts (44.2%), 42 of his last 94 attempts (44.7%), and 14 of his past 30 attempts (46.7%). His overall success rate is *42.4%* and this is his 756th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Elaine has matched her one and only attempt, Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Fannie has matched 15 of her 31 attempts (48.4%), Richard has matched 320 of his 755 attempts (42.4%), and Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%). Ron Palillo hasn't yet had a shot at a H/H question. *Today's H/H question: "________Cooked"* (Your/my goose is cooked? Sounds like too much of a stretch, too wordy. Half cooked? That's half baked, I guess. How about "Well" cooked? It sounds lame, but what else is there? - Overcooked? Undercooked?) The champion's reaction to the question seems similar to mine. Nothing good comes immediately to mind. After a contemplative pause and a glace to Fannie, Richard writes an answer, but looks far from confident as he files it in the slot. She doesn't sound too pleased with her final answer, but the champion offers the same response I settled for. That may be a good sign, as I've been tending to match Richard more and more after playing along with him for 756 times now... And once again, it's unanimous! Even so, I think it was a hard question today, so kudos to the champ and the H/H King for scoring a match with this one! Richard scores his 321st H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 42.5% (321 wins in 756 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1121, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
Does it matter if the panel members copy each other’s answers? This not a test, it’s a game show. I get so tired of seeing people make ugly comments about it. It’s supposed to be fun.
Howard Cosell was a revered man throughout his impressive life of scholastic achievment, practicing law, and WW2 Army service (Major). His frank commentary was a breath of fresh air. Haters will hate.
On a recent episode, one of the male panelists said they met Howard and he wa s very nice. It might've been Orson Bean. Gene responded by saying that he met Howard and they Howard was not nice. A while back Gene made a sarcastic comment about Howard being a lawyer. I guessed that Gene might've been jealous.
Howard Cosell brought the hate on himself. He was a pompous, egotistical, drunk who became embittered and caustic the more he couldn't get America's love. He had a fantastic rise to stardom then caused his own fall from grace IMHO,.
Piper-Clark, round 1, question A: "Doesn't Igor have to survive to adulthood so he can be in the movie? ...Yeah, so I just said his TOYS." (Bzzt!) Round 2, question B: "No, see, they don't know anything about music, so, hard as they try, they're all continuously blowing their CUES." (Bzzt!) "Hey, *somebody* has to keep this show classy." Super Match, part 1: CROSS Part 2: UNDER Piper-Christie, round 1, question B: "She's got one, because I've got a ZERO." (Ding!) Question A: "No, I went for the fleshy part of the LEG." (Bzzt!) Round 2, question B: (lay out)

I heard the use Brett's cackling to make prisoners talk at GITMO.
Lol when Brett started doing the Vito Corleone impression then stopped herself, and then Charles made a seamless transition from that into the answer!
Fannie yess
We love Charles.💖
I swear, Richard is truly a mind-reader.
“Thanks. I needed that.” 🤣
way to go , Richard - simply amazing
Chrissy Piper 1977 WOW!
Does it matter if the panel members copy each other’s answers? This not a test, it’s a game show. I get so tired of seeing people make ugly comments about it. It’s supposed to be fun.
Well in my opinion the celebrities are supposed to give their own answers not copying off the other celebrities
It's perfectly acceptable if one celebrity helps another celebrity. Happens all the time.
Christy Piper -- wow!
It was a great seven minutes Dave.
Two things I neglected to mention in my previous comment, Cathy is/was a real cutie and I really dig Charles's shirt
At the beginning, Johnny Olson plugs _Welcome Back, Kotter_. It was on ABC. Yet he rarely plugged _Family Feud_.
Yeah lol, not that I'll be defending saint Richard too many times, but why wouldn't he plug a show that he announces on
The plug was written into Ron’s contract. Richard didn’t have that luxury.
Fannie how do you spell Mississippi?
Just can't get over it, well COOKED? really?
Two bad answers matched 😅
First TX Wednesday 21st December 1977.
Elaine Joyce is a hottie!!
Did you hear about the latest telethon? They're trying to raise enough money to buy a friend for Nixon
How did Fanny get that sound? It sounded like she had a synthesizer up her nose.
They must have enhanced it after the live taping.
Howard Cosell was a revered man throughout his impressive life of scholastic achievment, practicing law, and WW2 Army service (Major). His frank commentary was a breath of fresh air. Haters will hate.
Given that it was Match Game, I suspect that some part of it was tongue-in-cheek...
@@MarqusW1 It became excessive over the seasons.

In later life Howard became a pompous drunk. Read AL Michael's book he explains Howard's self destructive behavior.
