    This was the sad reality I discovered once I graduated from film school. The system will use you for your love of the art of filmmaking, and leave you a broken shell of yourself. If you say anything your head is on the chopping block and there is an infinite number of hungry other people who can instantly fill your place, so people feel like they have to pretty much kill themselves just to get their foot in the door.

      Same for the video game industry, passion is used against them to work longer for less pay. It’s actually completely sickening and deplorable

    I just left the business after 20+ years. The pandemic gave me the time to understand I want more from my life. I hope the change happens because I know how hard the crew works and gets treated like dirt. I wonder if the Rock saw that mention & what he might say.

      I’m from the US, an extra and bit actor in Israel. I think that the crew are usually treated ok in terms of how they are spoken to, but working without breaks until late hours is usual. I thought that it was better in US

    I’m a medic in the UK. Not only do I work on frontline ambulances but I also work as a Production Medic in Film/TV. I take the health and safety of crew very seriously and have before (and would again) called break, which is a huge no as the director is the only one who usually calls break, so the crew could rest and eat etc. I have also shut productions down due to concerns that I have had over crew health/welfare.

  • @fakshen1973
    @fakshen1973 2 роки тому +53

    This is also affecting non-Hollywood labor markets as well. People are EXPECTING to work through breaks rather than give them to the crews... especially camera and sound crews.

    These work conditions are absolutely unnecessary. I may be relatively knew to the Industry (just under 10 yrs), but I immediately saw this is not working, for the the talent behind the camera, nor in front. I'm currently crunching numbers for a feature film production, and budgeting a 5 day - 12 hour a day (with 2 meal breaks) shoot schedule, with all salaries from PA to Director, BG to Leads, all being paid a more than livable wage, I know that's still 60 hrs a week, but no one should be too burnt out from this schedule, and everyone will have at least 2 days off to rest up and come back to the set feeling fresh and rested. I've received some slight backlash from a few people in the Industry, "We can shoot 6 days a week", "1 meal break is sufficient" and "We can shoot 14 hrs a day". I say NO, treat your Cast and Crew, (essentially all employees) well and they will be more than willing to do the best work for you. It can be done! I completely support this Strike! Change is needed. Now!

      as a film student there is literally no way.
      each delay in shoot costs so much money.
      we have no choice but to work 24 hours straight sometimes because we can't afford to delay the production.

    It's even more likely they'll get away with it because so many people want in the industry. They know that. They use it. I would of liked to hear from a Production Assistant’s interview/POV. Yes these people are also going through the same thing but from my experience of working in the film industry the PA’s see the most, hear the most, and know the most about what happens on set considering people think they’re worthless because they’re at the bottom level of film industry crew level.

  • @victorianromantic
    @victorianromantic 2 роки тому +13

    That “The Rock” movie she’s referring to working on a promo for - I’m pretty sure I worked on the filming of that movie. They started filming in early 2020, but got delayed, due to the pandemic shut down. By fall 2020, they were back into production. That’s when I worked on that show. (I’m a PA, so I’m paid pennies for the same long hours, but with no union protection. PAs are actually skilled workers as well, but since we are basically “entry level,” we are treated like cannon fodder.) Anyway, I digress - what I wanted to point out here, that since Netflix was so behind on this movie, they really pushed the entire crew. They had most of us working 6 days straight- some worked 14 or more days straight - but the absolute worst who got it, was construction. Like the rest of the departments, they were “Protected” by IATSE.
    Netflix had them working 30+ days in a row, 17+ hour days, WITH NO DAYS OFF. I heard that one of them decided to take a Sunday off, and he was fired for it.
    The abuse was too much. The only thing IATSE could do for them was ensure they were compensated financially for all the hard work. As if money makes up for health and lost time.
    All productions force workers to work too many hours, 12 hours for everyone being there bare minimum standard the same way that 8 hours is standard for your average office job. I say bare minimum, because people are ever rarely done right at 12 hours. 12 hours does not factor in pre-shooting and wrap time. 12 is the minimum, but 14 -16 hours is usually the average for most crew.
    (Occasionally you’ll find a production running on “French hours” which is 10 hours, but it means they work without breaks, and is really more like 12 when you factor in the pre-shooting and wrap after shooting. But even 10 hours is too long, IMO).
    While 14-16 hours a day is common for your typical film/tv production, these big streaming companies are even more abusive.
    This strike is long overdue.

      Same happened to me. I was working on a Netflix show called Moment of Truth, about a nuclear plant meltdown that took place in the past here in the US. Rigging. I was worked without a lunch break. When I took a day off it that I needed I was off the project plus they didn’t pay me for all the days I worked and was too exhausted to figure out how to fight it as I was recovering from the working conditions plus not wanting to cause trouble for I am non-union trying to get union days so I can be union for I want to be union yet the union won’t let me in yet even though I have been working in the industry since 1999.

    I remember our first film sound class with a god tier industry soundie. The first thing he said to us after meeting was "So this is what you love doing right? Well, you guys are crazy. I've lost 2 marriages and survived drugs and all sorts of risks for this" - Don't get me wrong; the old man was a sweetheart and down the line he just wanted us to understand that we as young aspiring film sound professionals deserved better than what he experienced starting out. It's been 6 years since that class and me and my close colleagues are just starting to get a grip on the concepts he briefly talked about. Our health and well being should be first priority. No fancy gig is going to sky rocket out careers into big time success it doesn't work like that anymore. No one talks about that camera assistant that jumped over a bridge, no one talks about the retired boomops/steadycams/camops who deal with massive spine injuries. No one talks about families being torn apart by all this. I really hope for better days ahead.

    I mostly do small independent low budget films right now, so I expect the "all hands on deck" at all hours mentality, it goes with the territory of finding your footing in the indie industry. The fact that your A-list studios are demanding this is gross and immoral. I 100% stand behind you on this. You deserve better and Netflix and Amazon need to stop pulling the "It's a new industry" argument. They know exactly how much to pay their A-list talent. They don't get to plead ignorance and knowledge in the same hand.

    How do I support this strike?

    • @albosudekum223
      @albosudekum223 2 роки тому

      The best way that people outside the union can support the strike is to cancel their subscription services for the duration and encourage others to do so too. It sounds painful and hard, but next time you watch something, take a look at the long long list of people in the credits. Sit while they scroll by even when netflix tries to skip to the next episode and keep them invisible. Imagine how hard every single of those people work and how badly they are treated. If the subscribers take a stand too, it will send an important message to these services that the consumers care how they behave.

    They were in breach of the contract in the first place. I’m sure. And the fact that your producers allowed this to happen is disgusting.

      Actors are workers? That’s why they have a union? Notice there is not studio executive union?
      It’s the company executives that are the are pocketing the money from grinding everyone on set to dust. They pay themselves first and do “Hollywood accounting“ before anyone else sees a dime.

      Nicolas Cage and Sam Elliot understand this. Individually, they visited our ‘lowly’ visual effects crew. Came to our office place, went to dailes with all of us. And were interested in what we do, etc. etc. There are FEW in between.

    To the people in positions higher than the minimum salary: It is simply sad to see that companies above a certain size continue to believe that they have to grow at any price. People in higher positions should perhaps think about whether the people around them and the culture and society around them are not more important than accumulating even more salary or wealth. In the end, it is the people around you with whom you spend special moments and they define your own story. You decide who is important to you and what your goals are. Most movies are about having to save the individual, why don't such entrepreneurs care about how their employees are doing? So the simple fact: Is my goal more money - or do I get more out of making people happy?

    If you work those long hours, at the very least pay them a lot more money. Then, their labor can be fruitful and they can save for retirement much easier. Working insane hours for 15 years straight beats working 50 plus years at 40 hours a week. Let these people at least enjoy having very well paid hours if you are to work them for long days.....
