"If it's not fun, why bother?" - Reggie Fils-Aimé This is what I've always loved about Nintendo, they put fun first and foremost and that's what games should be about, you should have FUN while playing games! I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with the Switch 2 and sure it won't be as powerful as a PS5 but honestly even if it just has the power of a PS4 that's still awesome because PS4 games STILL look fantastic so that would by no means be a bad thing. But ultimately what matters most is the games and having fun when playing them and I have no doubt Switch 2 will deliver that!
The only thing I see holding gaming back is companies pushing for better and better graphics after we've already reached the point of diminishing returns, leading unsustainable budgets, worse optimization and poor working conditions for developers
4K gaming was a huge mistake. Especialy they pretended to do 4k with ps4 pro times. If we all decided to stick to 1080p longer, and focus on framerate and performance, it would have been better for alot longer. BUt at the same time, instead of a 4k struglling 30 fos game, if we did 1080P and focuses on performance AND QUALITY, with a low res like that u can have badass shaders and AA and fancy efects turned up high. It could have been smoother framerates and looking better at the t same time, with the sdmall penalty of not 4k, not as sharp. Why be 4k if framerate is gonna struggle u know? We R still seeing 4k games at lockled 30 fps on consoles. IUf they just rendered at 1440p or 1080p they could hit much huigher framerates, and then any ray tracing or extra eye candy is not such a penbalty either. not to talk about pc, they allow to render at low or high res, our choice, so not a problem.
The switch was so successful because it had good games that prioritize style over pure graphic fidelity and had a lot of good games have high hopes for the switch 2 but some switch games ran poorly I know that it will have dlss but if it has PS4 power even with it it will have a hard time porting current generation consoles. But hyped for switch 2 mainly for Nintendos first party games that's what I enjoyed on the switch I understand the frustration of some of current generation games running poorly but anyway thanks for your opinion
I've always seen Switch 1 as a Nintendo games only platform. It's too weak, I don't want to play the worst version of every 3rd party game. And honestly the Switch has been pretty terrible at being the Nintendo games only platform as well, games are held back by the lack of power. When even Nintendo can't deliver smooth framerates or they can but the compromises are blatant and in your face (games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land where enemies very close to the player's point of view animate at half or quarter framerate, for example) then it's time for more powerful hardware. Switch 2 again will obviously be a Nintendo games only platform, because it'll still host the worst version of every 3rd party game. But hopefully now those Nintendo games will have good framerates without the compromises. Nearly all Switch games looked fine in the graphics and art style, so hopefully Nintendo does what nearly every other developer working on a new system fails to do, and puts the new power to use for no compromises high framerate instead of just pushing graphics ever higher while the games still run like a monkey's toss. I guess I should add: I don't value portability at all. "Oh but the Switch is portable" has never been incentive for me to put up with the worst version of 3rd party games. I live in car dependent 'MURICA, I have to drive myself everywhere, and even in the rare cases where I am a passenger I have learned the hard way that as I've gotten older I get motion sickness if I try to read books or play video games as a passenger. I can either look out the window and be fine or try to play or read and get sick. So my Switch never leaves the dock, I have no interest in a Steam Deck or other handheld PC, I only play at home on a big TV with a controller. Thus any game I can get on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, I'm going to get it there instead of the Switch.
Oh. I'd also like HDR support. Not every game has done HDR properly (this is the single negative mark I have against Astro Bot, for example) but when it's done right, HDR is way more impressive than any of the 4K raytracing crap other companies have been pushing. Let Switch 2 stay at 1080p but give me smooth 60 fps and proper HDR with that extra power.
13:38 this is pretty much my exact opinion as well. Almost nobody is going to get a Switch or Switch 2 with the intention of it pumping out AAA ultra realistic looking games that look like games on a PS5 Pro or really awesome PC. People get them so they can play stuff like Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc. Even on my own PC when I've emulated Switch games or Wii U games all I really did otherwise was bump up resolution and try to achieve a higher, consistent framerate and that's basically it. As long as the games can match the actual resolution of the display and run at 60fps+ with consistent frametimes I'd be very happy.
Lovely to see you so animated and fiery. Happy holidays Nate. And I agree with you, I am excited for the Switch 2 and I can't wait to play one of my favourite game: Kingdom Two Crowns at 60 FPS with the extra horse power and DLSS.
I am excited. A system like this, with rumored DLSS, which is such the perfect tool a weak system will need, we should have some very nice graphics games and hopefully 60fps or maybe even higher due to dlss.
Funny you should mention VR... by nature basically every VR game looks like it's 2 generations out of date because of the power requirements needed for the 90+ FPS framerate, and twin renders at ~2K each.
@@BluntyTV I'm glad that VR hasn't tried to push super realistic graphics. Realistic graphics rarely looks correct even on PC at the moment. Stylized graphics age the best and are still pleasing to the eye in lieu of VR's current limitations. I feel we are at the "SNES" level of VR at the moment in terms of timeline. Much more playable and cohesive games compared to previous years.
Dude vr is just a glorified Wii with the screen glued to your face. I remember fat fucks complaining about having to move to play Wii back then and now suddenly vr is good.
Only performance target Switch 2 needs to hit is to have same fidelity in hand held small screen and big screen tv. I almost never play on my switch on TV because the despite the increase in graphics clock the visual experience is degraded by the drop in PPI.
It was such a minor throwaway line in the video, but it really sticks in my craw: after Xbox 360, Microsoft should have just called the next one Xbox 4 so it was out alongside the PlayStation 4. Who cares if they skipped a number? If they can skip Windows 9 then they can skip Xbox 2 (or 3, whatever). Today we'd be on Xbox 5 X and Xbox 5 S and even though X and S still sound too similar when spoken aloud, at least Xbox 5 X would be clearly differentiated from the last generation Xbox 4 X.
Is it just me or is gaming now days just shit? (Insert old man memes here) Everything is just either a remaster, or an insane predatory cash grab? Nothing original and it all just blends into the same crap.
Sadly most developers have no say in making their games fun. Just none gamer CEOs. This is why I've given up on AAA gaming entirely at this point and only going Indy. My fingers are crossed for monster hunter wild but honestly my excitement for that is almost all but gone at this point.
I'm actually a bit worried cause the cycle for Nintendo for the past 3 almost 4 decades has been like this: One successful n64 One failure: virtual boy The GameCube was technically a failure at launch as well Another success wii Another failure wii u One of the most successful consoles Switch I'm afraid that the difference between the two systems won't justify actually buying it, especially if they get rid of original switch games, which i doubt it. I feel like it could succeed but definitely not like the wii or the switch. We'll have to see. They definitely need to make it worth calling it "the next gen console" it's gotta compete with other consoles too, as i guarantee in the next few year we'll be getting news of a new xbox and PlayStation. Kinda odd that Nintendo is seemingly behind when it comes to next gens but they are still competing just fine cause the games they have are actually really good.
Nintendo 64 was not a “success”… it was a DISTANT second to the original PlayStation. It just didn’t fail as badly as the GameCube and Wii U. This whole “IT’S A CYCLE, ONE SUCCESS ONE FAILURE LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL” narrative that people keep spouting out is rather misinformed. From the NES to the GameCube, every home console sold less than its predecessor. Then the Wii broke this pattern, then the Wii U failed again. On the handheld side, this hasn’t really been the case st all. The GBA did sell fewer units than the GameBoy, but it was still a massive success. The DS became the second best selling platform of all time, and the 3DS… still succeeded. It just didn’t succeed as much as the DS.
🙋♂ Playing games at native resolution does make games more fun for me. The problem is that I can see all the artifacts and image quality reductions introduced by DLSS, and they distract me from the experience. It's like the low framerate enemies in my face in Kirby that I described in another comment. I notice that, it's very distracting, my brain cannot help but expend energy wishing it wasn't there and wishing I could go into the settings menu (which doesn't exist on Switch games) and fix it. Most recently (almost a year ago already) I played Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth with DLSS on. The game does a lot of closeups of character faces and I could see all the DLSS artifacts in the faces, hair, and clothing textures. It was terrible. I turned DLSS off and dealt with a lower framerate instead (it's a turn based RPG so 60 fps instead of 90+ fps was fine). Native resolution is VERY important to me, I'm hoping the Switch 2 can just do a native 1080p and then let my TV upscale it to 4K. It doesn't do a bad job of that. Certainly looks better playing games like that to my eye than something like 1440p or 1800p upscaled via DLSS but with all those distracting artifacts being introduced. But hey, I'm a weirdo, admittedly I bet a lot of less nerdy gamers wouldn't even know what to look for and DLSS is probably fine for them. Nintendo wouldn't be wrong to use DLSS but I know I'd be sitting in front of my TV wishing I could turn it off every time I notice another DLSS introduced mess somewhere.
And again to harp on 4k, if the big fat super high graphics AAA gfames target 1080p o switch, and turn up all eye candy and DLSS, it might be amaziong. SO the games will not have to look majorloy watered down like the current blurry witcvher and doom and their low 30 fps.

For the so called AAA industry, yes it was. Every year big developers are digging their graves deeper (except for a few ones of course)
Can it play Pal World max settings?
What’s the point of hi fi graphics when I then can’t tell what I’m supposed to be looking at for the game?
No superman 64....
