      I thought that, too (that is true of police dogs in the US, who often respond to German, or Czech - often because they were born & raised there, though, as much as for security purposes), but if he'd been given to a person in Quebec, he'd hear it all around

      French (and also Italian) are languages that include lots of vowels. So commands in these languages are easier to understand and to sepperate form other commands that might sound similar. So yeah, somehow it's also a help for the dog to not get confused about the commands. (That's what I got told from a blind friend of mine :)

    • @MariieMe92
      @MariieMe92 4 роки тому +31

      @@alissa2336 Funny, because I'm french and I mostly use english words to train my dog and horses :) I find it's often shorter words, and easier for them to understand ! but maybe unconsciously it's just because it's not the language I use everyday ! (example for the horse : back, stay, bow, down, kiss... instead of recule, pas bouger, révérence, coucher, bisous... longer words !)

    Your French accent is very good.
    Some small translation precision:
    On y va = We are going
    En avant = Go forward
    Reste = Stay
    Debout = Stand up
    Mobile is short for "escalier mobile" which translates to "mobile stairs" which is the French term for escalator in Quebec.
    Au besoin has more then one meaning, in this situation it's short for "Aller faire ses besoins" which means "To go relieve yourself"

    • @petersilva037
      @petersilva037 3 роки тому +7

      Yeah, English Quebecer here, and the commands are mostly just standard French dog commands. "au pied" is "Heel", "Assis" is "sit", etc... fwiw, Molly was on point when she wondered about the English expression "without further ado" ... the adoo... is directly from the French adieu ...

    • @ErklaerMirDieWelt
      @ErklaerMirDieWelt 2 роки тому +4

      @@petersilva037 That is actually a common misconception but the etymology of ado goes back to Middle English "at do" which meant trouble. It has nothing to do with the original meaning of the French adieu (= à Dieu) which implies "we'll meet again in Heaven".

    • @ameliesayshola8854

    That makes so much sense! The commands for police dogs are in another language (like Swedish or something) so the average person isn't able to just tell the dogs what to do and I had always just assumed that was the same reason why Gallop knows commands in French😂

    • @saylormaloney2245
      @saylormaloney2245 5 років тому +101

      Abbey Strohmeyer most of the commands for police dogs are in German, since most of them are German Shepherds. Some of our commands for our German shepherd are German.

    • @248cate
      @248cate 5 років тому +138

      Fun fact but the main reason that police dogs are trained in different languages other than English is simply because of the fact that they were trained in different countries. It has little to do with other people being able to command the dogs because the dogs actually won’t listen to anyone but their owner/ handler.

    I'm French and when your editor wrote 'Début' I think Molly said 'Debout' which means 'Up' for the dog to stand up :)
    'Reste' means 'stay'

      I trained my grandparents dog to know where the stop sign is at the end of our road, I just said “stop sign” before walking to the stop sign, now she knows when we get to the stop sign that she needs to stop, cross the road, and walk on the other side walk. I think that you just say the name of the place you are going, walk there, and then return home after

    • @joannestark3023
      @joannestark3023 3 роки тому +6

      Repetition for sure, and then verbal praise and such when he associated the place with food reward or verbal praise. Plus, to a degree, he was following his nose, too. lol I taught my dog to find several places like that when we were near them. Eventually, she'd stop when she saw somewhere familiar as if to ask me, "Do you want to go in here today, mama? I found it." I praised her even though I didn't go in to let her know that yes, she should remember that place. They really do learn a lot across the time they work with us. :)

    Dear editor !
    You've done an incredible job for all the french words, but I DO think (I'm from Quebec, native french speaker) what Molly says for "go forward" to Gallop is "en avant" which literally means "forward". "On y va" would be like "let's go" which maybe is also correct but I just thought maybe it's more "en avant" just because of how Molly says it ? :)
    Also, "Debout" (it was written "Début") is "stand up" (Début would be "start" like, the start of a movie of something)
    Dehors was written good :) but it means "outside" and not door :)

    "On y va" is "Let's go"

    "Debout" is "Stand up"

    "Porte attention", "Prête attention" or "Fais attention" is "Pay attention"
    "Allez" is "Go"
    "Doucement" is "Slow down"
    "Mobile" for "Escalier mobile" is "Escalator"
    "Hop" or "Hop hop" is the same in english
    "Aux besoins" for "Faire ses besoins" or "Aller aux besoins" which means literaly "To relieve oneself", basically, it's "Going to the bathroom"
    "Bon chien" is "Good dog"
    "Bon garçon" is "Good boy"
    "Bonne fille" is "Good girl"

    Happy new year Molly! As a French speaker allow me to correct you or your editor on some very little details 😉 "Reste" means more "stay" than rest. When you get Gallop to stand up you're saying "Debout" which means "stand up" and not "début" which means "the start". Also, "avoir besoin" does mean "to need" but I think what is intended in "au besoin" is to mean "to go potty" as in French when an animal goes to poop/pee we say that they go do their "besoins".
    I hope I didn't sound like I'm mad at you for not knowing it because it was not the point, you actually have mostly a good accent I thought!!! Anyway I just thought you'd like to know these facts, hope you have a good one ❤️

    Hey Molly! I'm from Quebec, more precisely, I'm from the area of Montreal, and I was wondering if your dog comes from the Mira foundation? My family and I actually were a host family for a Mira dog and I absolutely love what they do. We had in dog Java in 2008 and he was a assistance dog for a lady who had a disease where she would lose balance a lot and her Mira dog would be a support for her. We just got a call from Mira the other day telling us that he is officially done his assistance dog career and he is living a peaceful retirement. Just thought I'd share this :)

    I raised two seeing eye dogs. It was very interesting to see the different commands they learn once they move on from me and go to more formal training. Fun fact within the same breed almost all guide dogs look identical no matter where you go besides size (there are exceptions of course). I would go to training meetings and there would be 20 dogs that looked like clones of mine, they all are adorable too.

      you're right, she didn't ask. however, she included a disclaimer in the beginning of the video for her viewers who speak french. she was worried about her pronunciations. so here we have a sub who just wants to help - something molly implied she needed in not only this video, but in many others! molly loves her subs and is the kind of person who welcomes critique and feedback when it's something she can actually change. she is the kind of person who WANTS to do things the right way and likes for people to be honest with her and tell her when she makes a mistake. and, not only that, lmao of ALL the comments you could have chosen, you picked one where the person said "you basically said everything correctly!" which doesn't reflect some of the other corrective comments. yes, i did type all this out to reply to a three word comment, and no, i do not have a life.

He knows "sit", "lay down" and "give paw" just by a simple hand gesture (he also knows the word) have taught him "no" "get down" "go to bed" which is his crate, he's crate trained. And he knows his toys by name and the name of his favorite snack. Also he'll jump into the tub for me to give him a bath. I'm VERY lucky for that, he's 87lbs lol.

    - 4:15 it's prête attention: pay attention
