A real treat for the ALCO fanatics. Especially the RSD-5s.
Thank you! We appreciate that. Those RSD-4s and RSD-5s were such neat engines.
I grew up around CNW trains when I was a little kid. Videos bring back great memories. Thank you
You’re very welcome. That is exactly why we are sharing these programs. Nostalgia is a powerful force. Thank you for watching the video, and we’re glad that you enjoyed it.
sure miss seeing old CNW around Milwaukee
The CNW was a fascinating railroad. It was sad to see it swept up in the 90s mega-mergers. Thank you for watching.
Thank you so much for this freaking fantastic and wonderful upload of the historical footage of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company my dear friend C Vision Productions. This is not an official upload, therefore I cannot endorse it, however I am in grate gratitude of your act of Kind Gesture in this world that we live in filled with PTC and Other Rail road issues. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company will always stand as a pillar of hope in the rail landscape and it stands as a reminder to us all that all hope is not lost when it comes to picking up your camera, your reflective vest, your BaoFeng railroad radio, your CSX hard hat, your CNW License Plate cover, your Knuckle Coupler to place atop the trailer hitch on your car, the illegal P5 mounted underneath your vehicle, and the SD Cards (AT LEAST 64 TB). It will be a great time. Railfans Are truly the Saviors of this great country. God bless the railfans. The Chicago and North Western Historical Society would be very proud of you all at the great C Vision Productions for this fantastic upload if you would please upload it a second time so that the world can be introduced to the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company in the same way I was when I created the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company. And thank you to your narrator guy who does the voice on this video, He is an inspiration to us all. God bles Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company. Fantastic.tt
The classic ALCo diesels are my favourite diesels! I like the RSD-5! One C&NW RSD-5, #1689, is on display at the Illinois Railway Museum. I saw it in person back in 2016!
The Alco RSD-5 is a very interesting model. We love them. It’s great that you got to see the 1689! IRM’s locomotive preservation and restoration efforts are impressive. Your comments are appreciated.
Thanks for the retro video of C&NW
You’re very welcome! Thank you for watching.
There's a Pizza Hut in Pierre, SD! I saw it in the film where ALCo diesels met EMD SD-9 units!
Sounds like a great place to go after a train chase! Thanks for pointing that out, MJ.
I would give anything to go back to the time of the Chicago and Northwestern.
Thanks, Allan. We feel the same way. Long live the CNW!
what an amazing video
Thank you so much! We’re glad that you enjoyed the video.
Thank you Chris!
You are very welcome Kenneth!!! Thank you for your continued support to our channel.
Great videos! We were just in the New Ulm/Mankato area last Saturday and got a video of a RCPE train going over the Cottonwood River bridge on the southeast side of New Ulm...same one shown at about 54:45 or so in your video.
Thank you very much! And yes, the line is definitely worth exploring, even today. It’s always a treat to catch the RCP&E’s SD40-2s out there. We appreciate the comment.
I used to operate one of the Chicago & North Western's ultrasound rail test trucks through the 1980s and I can say from my own experience that the line across southern Minnesota to Winona did indeed have light rail. In fact, so light that it was not unusual to find as many as 50 broken rails in one day over two-three miles of trackage tested in one day. This drove the local roadmasters nuts from having to change out so many rails. Consequently, we in the rail testing department really weren't that welcomed when we were assigned this territory of 90-100-pound, mainline rail some going back to being rolled in the early 1890s (yes, eighteen nineties).
Wow! Appreciated or not, you had an incredibly important job. Especially on a segment of track like this with poor rail conditions. You likely prevented countless derailments through your testing. We remember that old rail. Much of it was still in place 15-20 years ago. Thank you for sharing your story.
Incredible stuff here!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Thanks for finally releasing classic cnw
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
The RS-3s look great in CNW colors.
They certainly do! The three RS-3s leading that RSD-4 in the morning light towards Waseca was nice. Thank you for the comment.
This is great! Loved seeing Tower CK(the building) for the first time and what’s now the Waseca Sub. Countless thoughts of what was enter my mind when I am out along that line and now I have a better idea. Thanks for sharing!
We’re glad that this video meant so much to you! That’s what we’re trying to accomplish with these classic shows. It’s fascinating to see the many changes that have occurred along this line over the past 40+ years. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@ 18:40 the train crossing the old CGW line between St. Paul and Dubuque. So sad that it's gone. Too bad that line wasn't made into a bike trail.
That CGW line would have made a great bike trail. Pretty country and a nice route. Oh well. We appreciate your comments.
@@CVisionProductions1 especially the stretch between the oil refinery and Dodge Center.
Great footage.
Thank you, Hunter!!! We appreciate you watching.
@25:02 you will see an old Super America gas station sign spinning in the background. I remember those!
Great eye spotting that sign! We didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out. Thank you.
Remarkable work Chris! Wish I could have experienced the golden age of ALCO diesels before they disappeared, but at least some shortlines still use them in some capacity. So that may be a possibility for me to visit.
I shouldn’t be surprised most of these were quite dirty considering how much they smoke, but can’t unnotice it. Sad that all ex CNWs remaining on UP have all been repainted. But thankfully, we do have some units in preservation restored to CNW colors like SD50 7009 which got a partial repaint.
Oh, and was that an ALCO switcher without a control cab operating as a DPU in one clip?? Never seen that before!
As a teenage rail fan in the mid 1960's to 1980's it was very common to see CNW and CGW units like these. They were known as Slugs then. Some still had cabs and some had the cabs removed and looked like a B-unit. My understanding was the bodies were filled with concrete for traction and the trucks got their power from main locomotive. I always thought it was cool to see them.
Thank you for the nice comment, Alik. Those Alcos loved to smoke! Their appearance certainly reflected that. Imagine running those units through tunnels! As for the 7009, it’s awesome to see that locomotive running again. We did capture it many years ago on the Wayzata Sub (trailing), but that footage hasn’t been used for anything. The friendly commenter that replied to you appears to have answered your question about the slug. From what we could tell, the slugs were usually paired up with the C425s. The slug that you noticed in the middle of the train was just along for the ride, since it would need electrical power from a controlling locomotive to operate. We appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.
Good stuff, Chris. I have spent a lot of time on that line due to family in eastern SD.
I never knew something crossed the CNW at Lake Preston…time for some research.
Thank you! And yes, a Milwaukee Road branch line crossed the CNW at Lake Preston. Pretty neat stuff.
@@CVisionProductions1 interesting. Will check that out next time I’m in the area.
Just great great C&NW stuff.
Thank you so much! We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed it. It’s nice to know that true CNW fans appreciate this video.
Parabéns pelo vídeo , muito bacana como sempre , assistindo do Brasil , abraço!
Thank you for watching!!! Greetings from Minnesota, USA.
0:44 do you guys have any footage of the Superior Branch when it ran between Fremont and Superior and Wahoo to Ashland? Just wondering
Alco Diesels were always the loud ones
No, we don’t. But thank you for asking!
Ge's and Alco's...chug chug chug chug, it sure wasn't hard to tell it was them you were hearing even if you couldn't see them.
A 400 number on an Alco!? Mind blown😂
Yep! It looked like they had several Alcos numbered in the 400 series. Thank you for checking out the video.
Do you have footage that is from st.paul through shakopee and down to Worthington on the Omaha route
Yes, we do have a little of that.
Let’s hope you upload it soon
What are the names of all the songs played on here?
The music is from Bensound. If you’re interested, check out their website to listen. They have a good selection of royalty-free music.
I wished that you Mae this video without the blasted music! I thought you were making it to where the locomotives did the talking!
If this footage had natural sound, we absolutely would have used it. It never did, so we provided the audience with music as a substitute. Most of our videos do have natural sound, and we’ll continue to upload those. Thank you for your feedback.
