Im sure i have heard that the Battles around Yelnya were quite costly affairs for both sides but that the Germans were in the worst of positions in a Bog or something about Marshy Ground as at some Mess Dinner in Germany at the time there was a' mud Cake' presented to the senior officers as a jibe from the men of the Regiments that were stuck fighting in and around the area! Great footage. Germany lost because it was fighting overwhelming numbers. One on one they were unstoppable
Germany had a severe logistical problem the deeper they went into Russia which contributed to their downfall as much as anything else .
