The A-10 Thunderbolt II (nicknamed Warthog or "Hog") was a terrific, very resilient aircraft. Pilots who flew that bird trusted it because it could bring them home after completing its mission. Ground troops depended on it because it could go in and do its job, and then get out of there. That 30 mm Gatling gun on its nose saved a lot of lives by neutralizing the enemy and it's positions and munitions. Its short takeoff and landing capability permitted operation from airstrips close to the front lines, and its simple design enabled maintenance with minimal facilities; its titanium armor to protect the cockpit and aircraft systems, enabling it to absorb a significant amount of damage and continue flying. It's fuel cells are protected too It was an all-around valuable aircraft and should be refitted if necessary, and reused instead of retiring it! With a variety of upgrades and wing replacements, the A-10's service life can be extended to 2040 easily!
@@jmatt689 My typo, good catch! Yeah, that GAU-8/A Avenger is a 30 mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-style auto-cannon on the nose of that Warthog and it's HEAVY! It can spit out about 3900 rounds per minute and that's pretty deadly. It can fire 4,000' away with drop-dead accuracy, and hit a target from even farther away, or at least, so they tell me! I actually saw several single or pairs of A-10's flying low enough for everyone to stop to look at them, over the East Yorkshire countryside back in the late 80's to early 90's. Obviously we never heard them firing but I realise that many people would love to have seen a couple of low flying A-10's.. I'm not sure if they were based at the USAF bases in the UK but there are various USAF bases a hundred miles or so to the south in East Anglia, so maybe they were from there (I've also seen RAF Seakings, RAF tornadoes and lightning fighters, plus many police and hems helicopters and even minesweepers and navy destroyers and frigates around my general area over the years, but the A-10 criss crossing the summer sky, so low that I could immediately see what plane it was is something that I'm glad to have witnessed..).
Just like the Tomcat was built for the Phoenix air to air missile, the A-10 was built around the 30 mm gun. I have been to Camp Grayling and Selfridge military base, both in my home state of Michigan. CIWS (nicknamed R2D2 from Star Wars) on board ship sounds just like this gun, too.
