Tom Curren was the pivot point and the catalyst of evolution in surfing as we know it. Why do you think top pros still point to his flow style and skill. Kelly Slater (referred to as the GOAT) even says they were watching and looking up to TC as he led the way. As a grom (and I am the same age as KS) I had looked up to and idolized Tom Curren and any surfer today who can surf with Tom’s flow of his day, anyone would say that dude can rip. That’s because all of that flow and skill sets a baseline to do all the other maneuvers in a way that is controlled and stylistic. Long live the King.
I don't know where your home base is or where your local break but I just turned 50, and we must have shared the lineup at the jetty here in Ocean Beach San Diego at some point in time get some tube time for us all brother

He's hyped up but I still love his style. He's the greatest old school surfer. He only does turns so I wouldn't consider him the best factoring in the modern greats.
I was surfing a beach break near Ventura about 10 years ago. It was good, and I had caught a few on a peak alone. I noticed someone sitting a little ways behind me, and he looked a lot like TC. He caught an incredible wave, and it was TC! He was out with his brother, and they got more barrels than I've ever seen. I'll never forget it. An absolute legend
Best surfer of all times!!!! Kelly came after him as a student and continue the show, but even Kelly said that Curren was the inspiration. Tom Curren is still the inspiration for Kelly Slater! Curren can surf with any board! He is a master of any wave! Small, big, medium... doesn't matter...
I Beleive Curren is the best forehand surfer that has ever lived. Once when i ws on a trip o the gold coast, i went to the tambourine mountains west of the coast an old combie pulled into a camp site i was resting at and in the kombie was a blonde pretty girl, and a Surfer looking dude, he got out and walked alittle ways to my right and stood looking into the bush. It was curren my hero with his french wife good memories.
Tom's genius was becoming one with the wave. He is part of it's movement. All his manuveres flow in accordence with the wave's energy. That's what makes him timeless.
Seriously this is clean flawless power surfing with that unmatchable Tom Curren style. No wasted movement just clean carving, pocket turns and cutbacks, so sweet to see.... This is surfing. Not just airs. This is how you surf!!
TC is a legend Gave him a ride to the airport after he did a concert at our beach. Don’t know how it got arranged but I was pumped. Cool guy. This was when he started riding 5’6” boards at pipe and we talked about that for 30 min until I dropped him off. I drove away in disbelief that that just happened

Watching tom curren surf makes every surfer question there own style and technique .low compression,arms close to body and chest facing along stringer is necessary for balance and stability.tom certainly mastered all these areas and more.

He came out of a 3year retirement. Had to surf through the trials in every event to get to the main contest,He won 7 contests that year . in a league of his own. Beautiful soul, a surfer born to ride waves he and waves were one.Smooth, powerful, flawless, flowing, Style A wonder to behold.
I love watching TC surf, the quickness, flow, power and the way he always seems to find the wave’s sweet spot is just mesmerizing to me. Saw him a few times at OP Pro in HB, glad to have seen him at his peak even though now he still is solid!
Tom is so natural & in tune with the wave...as if they are one. He is just following his gut instinct. SO many of the pros these days are not using their gut instinct when surfing waves, they are relying to heavily on their coach to tell them how to ride the wave & were to sit to catch the wave. Not this old school generation they didn't have the “team” support like pros do now. And it really shows how great the surfing was back in the 80’s. Love the music to this video also. The coolest thing, Curren still rips a wave now!! 🏄🏿And even now he always finishes off his wave. So cool to watch this video (my 10th time in a row LOL😳😱).
I was born and raised here in Point Loma Ocean Beach with Chris Bystrom he did beyond blazing boards, cyclone fever, basically all the eighties best surf movies so lucky to grow up around him.
What a living legend. I use to love the shape of those Ocean Pacific boards he surfed. He made those boards perform like it had outboard motors strapped to it....
Tom Curren will always be legendary in Western Australia for riding a fifteen foot plus bomb from surfers point all the way to the rivermouth during the Margarets Masters in early nineties. The south west misses you Tom Come back and play music with us again!
1983 Hang Ten contest San Diego Curren shooting pier and unloading for 2 blocks on 6 to 8 foot backside lefts I was on pier so I had a somewhat aerial view all I saw was 15 spray as high as pier and at end people clapping on beach many other top pros would sit on the beach to witness

I'd read a few articles about Tom before he came to Oz with the tour and I knew that his dad got him surfing at a very early age - there was a maturity to his surfing even back then. I wasn't surprised when he got his share of waves in Hawaii that season - he was a natural whether the swell was 3' slop or 30' Waimea.

He gave me the stink eye once on a big day at creek when i temporarily drifted in the contest zone (gnarley current) after a good 1...his kid was in the contest. Have seen him out there a number of other times getting some good ones.
This video is timeless. The truest form and style I have ever seen, still unmatched in terms of freestyle and approach rail to rail. And it was 20 to 30 years ago. One of the nicest humble people I have ever met. And he was surfing on subpar equipment. I hope everyone stays stoked and keeps the good vibes flowing. You all have carried me with your love.
