This week I take some measures to try and keep the cold out of my stone house before we get some sub zero temperatures. Lots of people asked about my beach mug last week, it's from Julia Smith ceramics juliasmithceramics.bigcartel.com/ Want some more nonsense in between Sundays? Get the insulation in a.s.a.p. Get someone to do it for you Mine has been removed during renovations (it needed upgrading anyway) - can't go back until the electrical work is done (very very slowly) it's much colder without it. 2 fleeces on my bed colder & that's before this weekends temperature drop. A joy as always.T.
I have an electric blanket in bed, I preheat the bed for an hour before going to bed, a life saver. I also have an electric throw over on my couches for my wife and I while watching tv. 😊👍
HOnestly mate - what I found (and i've lived where theres snow) - get thick plastic....paint drop cloths (really) and staple gun them over the windows on the outside or inside (or tape them just over the panes). It literally - at least everywhere I lived - adds 10c to the room......its inexpensive. Thats my best advice. Plus - never thought I'd say it but friend talked me into it - heating blanket. Even if cheap - really makes it cozy. Hot water bottles in desperation.
As someone who lives in the Northeastern USA near the Canadian border… PLEASE take steps right now to insulate the windows and dormers. Put rolled up fabric under the doorway,s to block the cold air. The idea above about stapling plastic is a good one, unless you can get professional insulation done SOON. a heated blanket UNDER you is wonderful …. As well as cozy down comforters. good luck !
Dear Jude, I'm suffering terribly with my mental health at the moment and can I tell you, that just the very beginning of your video alone, lifts my spirits so much.....when you turn in a circle and you have that beautiful smile on your face, I feel myself relax and I feel everything will be ok. Thank you Jude and also thank you to each and every person in this community. Reading the lovely comments also helps me so much. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. ❤️❤️❤️
I’m sending you all of the hugs! I’m sorry you’re struggling at the moment, and I hope you have people around you to look after you. I’m very honoured to be a bright spot in your day! 🥰💗
I think you are a genius! I have tried knitting and I am no good at it but knowing what it takes I consider you and your mom Genius"s for the inticate work you have shown us. I love you Jude❤
I hope you soon feel better. And thank you Jude for your wonderful, honest and unpretentious video. What a breath of fresh air you are! 🫂🫶🏻🙏🏻I wish I had half your energy! 😅
as a trans guy in his early 20s, your content is so so inspirational to me, and is something that i’ve been searching for, for years. it makes me have hope for my future, and make things less scary. and thank you everyone in this lovely, lovely little internet community that we’ve built with jude. you’ve helped restore my faith in older folks as you’ve all been so kind and supportive and it’s been a continuously nice place to fall back to in this very hectic time. thank you all ❤
@@TamarLitvot not in the us (canadian) but thank you nonetheless!! the far-right extremity of american politics has crossed the border and is infecting ours - i’m not looking forward to the 2025 election for prime minister but i’m trying to stay hopeful :)
Theo this is the BEST comment - thank you. I get at least one comment on every video asking ‘why do you feel the need to introduce yourself as queer, what does it matter?!’ And THIS is why. 💗 I’m so glad you enjoy my videos - and that 99.9% of people in the comments are absolutely lovely. Hi Jude having lived in an un-insulated centuries old stone house, they need to stay warm, the stone will retain warmth if kept warm and in the hot months keep the insides cool. I also had mice and other animals, the trick is to block their entrances, I used wire wool to plug holes and spay food to fix in place. Sadly traps too because if left untreated they will eat your cables and could cause a fire. So my advice is call someone in a professional or try and fix it yourself. Maybe get a cat too? Great company and easier to manage than a dog (if you live alone) but remember dogs have owners whilst cats have staff 😂. If it’s any consultation I now live in a 1990s house and have had rats in the cavity walls and loft!! Give yourself another year and you’ll be up in that loft space clearing it out, fixing the holes and laying insulation whilst picking up dead mice with not a single thought. It’s amazing how a few years in the countryside will change your squeamishness. The bird in the shed must have made you jump but I don’t think you’re actually scared because you’re amazingly brave person, just look at what you’ve been through and how you’re still challenging yourself and what you’re achieving and have achieved. During my cold winter months when I lived in a hamlet with just 2 other neighbours and if the weather was poor I would just accept it and light a fire, cook and read a book because spring will be here soon! I admire your “give it a go” attitude. My other advice is there will be tough times, but you’ve build an amazing online community and the comments seems so supportive so just keep your chin up and keep making the videos and make sure you have one warm and cosy room to retreat to! Oh and buy an electric plug in over blanket (I know they may seem like something an older person in a care home might use but they are amazing and they heat the person up quickly if you’re sitting on the sofa reading). Keep up the great work!!! Best regards Johnny 😊
Thanks so much Johnny! I’m loving the adventure so far - even if the cold this week has made me go a bit stir crazy! Cannot agree more about the heated throw blanket - I LOVE mine - it gets used all the time at the moment! Hope you’re staying warm! 💗
With all the horrors happening in our world now; you are the most beautiful & loveliest reminder how decent, kind & good some people are. That is a huge strength!!! Thank you Jude for reminding & showing me that. 💛⭐️
Obrigada por nos mostrar que a vida é bela , mesmo com tantas coisas que nos deixam tristes , continue sendo essa pessoa maravilhosa que você é .Saudaçoes do Brasil.
I'm a 60yr old woman living in rural Illinois. Your videos are like a calming balm in the middle of the noisy chaos that is the USA right now. So thank you dear soul for your light.☘ Moira
I'm your neighbor here in Iowa. I also feel the anxiety of chaos in our country, especially living in a red state. I am 50 yrs. His videos bring me calm and a reminder that the whole world isn't falling apart. Praying for us 🙏
I'm in Michigan and my son and his family are in Chicago. I realized this morning that it's been two weeks since the election. My central nervous system is needing more beauty such as Jude offers to get through the chaos. Many blessings to you.
Hi Jude! So you helped me teach a math lesson this week! The students had to figure out the area of a raised bed, however I teach in an inner city, most of the students didn't know what a raised bed was...I showed them part of last week's video when you were building them. They loved watching the video..third graders, so 8-9 years old...thanks!
Wonderful Gracey! Jude is wonderful role model of self sufficiency and independence. There is hope for the future with you teaching those kids. Carry on!
What a cool idea to show someone building a practical thing to the kids to keep a lesson interesting. And Jude has such a nice easy way about him that is wonderful to watch. Check around your city to see if there's a community garden or just a really avid gardener who has raised beds. Maybe you can get a field trip together. In my town there's a community garden and tool library right on one of the main streets. They took two blighted properties, tore down one house and made the other into the office and tool library. They have raised beds, some green houses, polytunnels, the works. It made a huge difference in the neighborhood to have green growing things most of the year where there used to be derelict houses with overgrown yards. Just saw a show on PBS with an aquaponic garden in Kansas City. It was an amazing community resource.
@@bethenecampbell6463 that sounds awesome. Actually we have a garden with raised beds at school. I totally forgot about it! A second grade teacher is in charge of it, but none of my students had her, so not sure how much exposure they had to it.
My mum died 6 weeks ago, then my dad died suddenly last week! I love to watch jude enjoying his new life in the countryside, fresh air helps you stay positive 😊
An old fashioned idea for sorting the draughts under your doors? A fabric "sausage ", fixed to the door with half inch "poppers and studs". Will move with the door, so no trip risk.
Yeah these are great!!! Highly recommend! Other than the usual double sided door snake, or the loose one you kick in place each time, having one thumb tacked, nailed or pinned to the door means it just drags itself along the floor and just floats in place as you pull the door. I made mine with an old woollen blanket that had worn thin, I have a double sided one, and its so easy to make with a rolled up bit the right length and a quick blanket stitch and maybe a few old socks or towels or teeshirts inside to make it into a sausage/snake shape 😊👏💕
Try a draught excluder with brush on the bottom. They work very well and the brush allows for an uneven gap. Love your channel, you are going to do so many good things to make your home work for you. I'm excited to follow your journey 💙.
Yes! I need to get one - now the snow has melted I can go to the DIY shop! Ahh thank you so much - I have so many plans - I’m trying not to get frustrated that I can’t tackle all the big things at once!
Same here. I KNOW I’m going to get at least a couple of giggles from Jude. “There are dead Wasps nests through that door, but it’s none of my business”.😂😂😂
Loving your videos. In same situation. Just moved to very cold cottage in cairngorms. Maybe we can share hints and tips. No bats yet but do have mice!!
If your roof space is cold enough, bats could over-winter there (they do in mine).Insulating would then disturb them badly - but I see that a bat expert is offering to visit, which would be great. Never be anxious about bats 'flying at you' - just stay still, and they will swerve away; they know exactly where you are and have no wish to collide with you ! They are really fascinating and intelligent little creatures. Your cottage is beautiful, by the way - and the landscape.
I agree with everyone else. Do get bubble wrap for your windows.lightly spray with water and dishwasher soap, then apply bubble wrap. The double hot dog style draught proofers save you moving them everytime you open the doors. A dehumidifier is brill for drying clothes and keeping condensation away. If you got water pipes in loft buy old duvets, lay them over the pipes. Just love your videos, you bring such joy.❤❤❤ just put loads of bat houses outside, they will migrate out of loft and you will be able to proceed. Put up a wildlife camera in loft to see where they are coming in. So when they all migrate to the boxes outside you can legally block the entrance.❤❤❤
To add warmth to your bed, place a wool or fleece (or both) blanket on the mattress. Then a feather Duvet. Top with a fitted flannel sheet. Flat flannel top sheet and blankets finish off a warm, cozy bed. Eat warming foods. Get your pup so you'll both be walking in the light, improving your energy, mood, and staying toasty. You could take the door, which has the gap off the hinges and glue or staple strip of heavy felt or wool. Rehang. The door will slide and keep out cold. Toodles from a Canadian who refuses to be cold.
The door curtain is like putting a coat on the house where I live in the top of a hill. Really makes a difference. Your dog when you get them will keep you warm too. 🐾🐾🐾
Having a dog will keep the deer away from your garden. All the best Jude, I enjoy your efforts. people before you survived the winters and so will you.
When I was a little girl and I first saw the ocean, I felt an ache in my heart and even now, I feel it when I go. I have no idea why, but surely I'm not the only one.
You must walk miles filming these videos. Just want you to know that I really appreciate all the laughter, smiles and hard work that you display is so appreciated. Always look forward to seeing you every weekend. I hope you find a solution to adding insulation to your attic. It would really make a world of difference. Hopefully someone has a solution for you. Where I live in Canada on the west coast we can have insulation blown in. Yes, it is more costly but so efficient. When we moved into our house many moons ago, in Dec., it was a new build. We couldn’t figure out why it was so cold. Hubby decided to check out the attic. Shocker! The builder had not put any insulation in our attic. It was immediately remedied and wow, what a difference. Live and learn. Excellent idea putting down the mesh in your garden boxes. No moles disturbing your Veggies. Well done Jude. Have a great week and see you soon.💕👍🏻
Hi there fellow Canadian. We live in one of the suburbs close to Vancouver. What area are you in ? I see that the snow word has come up for Tuesday. A bit early for me!! Yes, Jude is a breath of fresh air. Such a sweetheart.
@@colleenmckinlay2916 I'm about 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver. Also, living out in the 'burbs. I did hear about the potential for snow. From what I see online there will also be rain so hopefully it won't stick. Jude is such a sweetheart and I enjoy his content so much. If he had a P.O. box I would send him a gift for his cottage.
Jude, my wife is a knitter, just looking at a knitting pattern is enough for me, looks as though you need a degree in knitting to understand a knitting pattern. However in order to keep warm she has knitted two wool blankets each slightly larger than a single bed. She takes all the odd left overs of wool and knits them into squares then sows the squares together into a blanket. As I get older I am becoming more of a chilly mortal even with the central heating on, at the moment I am sitting in the armchair watching your vlog with one of these blankets wrapped round me. Keep up the good work.
Definitely!! My big freezer in the shed is full - I had to cram in some batch cooked soup earlier on 😂 it’s actually snowing here at the moment but I don’t think it’s supposed to come to much!
Canopy curtains (via rods suspended from the ceiling) have made a huge difference in our non insulated home. Our ancestors chose beds like that for a reason.
I've followed your journey for years, I'm not a creepy stalker, promise. I'm a knitter 😅 I just wanted to say how much this lifestyle suits you and how very enjoyable your episodes are to watch. Wishing you the very best.
I have an electric blanket. I switch it on 15 minutes before I get into bed. As somebody else suggested, I put a down duvet under my bottom sheet. A warm bed really adds to my quality of life.
I was watching another utuber in Scotland (Im in Aus) but his main drift was making money, renovating, letting out air bnb, fluffycats called Junior, did I say making money, getting tradies in and lots of promos. This channel is real and refreshing.
Ahh thank you! Doing my best to keep it pretty real over here. I’ll do an occasional ad to keep the bills paid and they’ll be some tradespeople eventually for the stuff I’m not skilled enough for (roofing, electrics!) but otherwise, I’m kind of happy with what I have! Give me a secondhand bargain any day of the week!
As I sit in bed I can see my breath because I live in a stone built uninsulated chapel with a crypt below ,putting the central heating on is ineffective and expensive.grade 2 star listed I’m not allowed to put in a stove! Or new windows,I’ve covered doors and windows with thick blankets .I recommend an electric blanket so you get into a warm bed,an electric heated throw for the sofa and a dehumidifier to keep the humidity, damp low.and a little fan heater for those unbearable moments when you can’t stand the cold anymore, stay warm darling
A hot water bottle can be great in the winter months. Putting it in your bed to warm it up before you get in makes the bed much cosier, then shift it down to your feet when you get in. It's hard to fall asleep if your feet are cold. 🥶 A knitted cover for it is even more comforting.
Everyone has such a love for you Jude,..like having a bowl of warm soup watching you...get an amazon wish list im sure some of us Judettes would help you out xx
@@rewildingjude Hi again! I’m curious if there are things that you know that you will need, but do not yet have for your future renovation projects that could go on the list. There’s always the double sided sausage roll for under the door that so many people have mentioned. Thank you again for sharing your life and experiences with us and literally inviting us into your home.
@@rewildingjude a dehumidifier is your friend if it does happen once you heat/insulate it more (we had issues with condensation once ours warmed up) - at the first sign of any damp just rotate it room to room, it makes it feel warmer as it's drier, it's cheap to run and if you're drying washing inside it dries far quicker!
@estherrenwick7006 comments about dehumidifiers for winter fascinate having grown up on the highveld in South Africa! We had very dry winters, which is why we don't get snow very often. With a dehumidifier on, do you then get all the fun of static shocks every time you touch something or stroke a cat (this leads to both disgruntled human and cat!)? I now live in a part of SA where I'd love a dehumidifier as a machine rather a box of crystals that gets forgotten and floods your cupboard with weird somehow slimy water. And ways to keep the heat out!
@@lemonbalmmelnever had static shock issues with ours, on cat or human! We have one that collects about 5 litres of water and it's so much better than the little boxes of soggy crystals!
A copper stick on strip for the snails (garden centres sell them) and a draft excluder with bristles that you nail on to the bottom of the door (most outlets sell these.colours, gold silver or white.❤
Hey Jude! 😊 your parents are looking down on you. As a mother of three 20 something year olds, I’m proud of you for them. Honestly, so proud. You remind me of our eldest…he’s a bit of a dreamer. He hikes the Appalachian Trail, by himself (worries us to death!) he teaches himself things and conquers whatever he attempts. Energetic, and kind, like you. His next conquest is to buy a small home, renovate it himself, and possibly sell. It won’t be a quaint Scottish cottage, unfortunately, but I’m sure he’ll find something. That fuel leak was scary!!! Glad you got that squared away. Bless your heart, darlin. Love, from Tennessee ❤️❤️ keep making the world a better place.
If your bedroom is downstairs then they maybe try closing off the upstairs temporarily, and use the downstairs during the winter time.🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️👍👍👍if everything you need is downstairs.
100% without reservation, you absolutely rock!! Anything you ever go through please remember the light you bring. Every time I watch your clips I remember my late mum’s beautiful soul, humour and propensity for finding a way to do everything she needed to do to renovate our houses, have fun, build our gardens and whatever else needed doing as we grew. Keep being yourself and living your beautiful life however it works for you.
Hey lovely Jude. You popped up on my feed, and now Im hooked! I sold up and moved into my self build campervan Vera a few years back after a breakdown/stint in rehab/dance with the devil of madness! I saw it all as an opportunity to learn and grow and rebuild who I wanted me to be, not who others thought I should be. Its all been rather been life affirming and quite the adventure ☺️ At 56, I finally know who I am! Sometimes the hardest things yield the most unexpectedly amazing results dont they? I imagine your parents are watching over you with such pride ❤You are utterly fabulous, you have the most wonderful energy and I'm excited to watch all your vlogs from the beginning. Im so happy the algorithm brought you to me! Huge hug from a new subscriber. Tracy ❤
Thank you so much Tracy!! I would love to self build a camper one day! I love the idea of driving around Scotland with a dog in the back, swimming in all the lochs! Maybe when I finish the house 😂
Hi Cathy!! This is a topic I can relate to!! The misconception that if you’re single and child free that you can sit around doing nothing all day!! That’s far from true!! I’m 58 and single- my chores aren’t going to magically disappear or do themselves!! Having lost my job during the pandemic, I’m still struggling to get back on my feet, but I am thankful for every day, dear friend and family and the chance to do things at my own pace!! And, even if you choose to sit and do nothing all day, you have the right to do so!! Your videos are so calming and inspiring!! I don’t want to race through life- it passes us by all too quickly!! I want to enjoy it as long as I’m able to!! Thank you dear Cathy for becoming a happy part of mine- though we may never meet, I feel very blessed to be a part of your online community!! Many blessings to you and your family!!🙏🙏😍😍😍
oh, i feel you on the uneven floors vs door battle. consider a draft dodger, a sand filled tube that you lay down in front of the door when it's closed (also works to keep the door propped open in warmer days). they range from cute to practical, but they do work well and, bonus, are too heavy for a snail to nudge out of the way ;). I made mine, but etsy or amazon are always an option.
@@rewildingjude My friend's parents had them; they had attached a small key ring at the end of each and they lived on a hook, behind the curtain, when not in use.
There is a window insulation product by 3M (and other brands, but theirs is the best) that works a treat. We all use it in our old houses in chilly Minnesota. It comes with removable double-sided tape in the kit. You tape around your windows, put up the plastic wrap, and use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic. It keeps all of the drafts out and can be taken down in the spring. Totally transparent like a window so you don't lose your view.
I’ve just tried something different with that film instead of putting it over the whole window I’ve just put it over the glass in my sash windows so I can still open when needed it’s cut the heat loss and draught a treat
I was going to post all the tips and tricks I knew for keeping cold out and warmth in but I see that I'm way behind.😊 After reading everyone else's useful suggestions there was only one left in my repertoire that I didn't see mentioned, and that's curtain length. You did right adding liners to your curtains but unfortunately the cold from the window will sink straight down below them to the floor and so they won't make as much difference as one hopes. When we first moved to Canada from Northumberland we noticed that everyone had floor length drapes and that's because cold sinks and heat rises. Of course radiators below windows can be an issue, but if possible make floor length curtains and keep them closed, and that will help tremendously. Door sausages are also perfect for draughts under doors. I made my own with fake fur I had on hand from making stuffed toys and stuffed them with fibrefill, and they work fine as long as they're a bit longer than the width of the door. Of course door curtains are absolutely the best. My Dad's Mam lived in a Victorian terrace and had heavy woollen blankets hung inside the doors to the front hall and the back kitchen, which were always closed all winter because the only heat was from the coal fire. Even with central heating today, all the practical suggestions mentioned help conserve heat and save on fuel costs. I can't recall if anyone suggested window film already, but that is also a good idea with single paned windows. I've even seen deep windows like yours treated by taping abd sealing heavy duty clear plastic over the whole window opening, leaving an air gap between the glass and the inside wall, acting like insulation. It's cheap and not pretty but it works. 👍 I hope you don't get too chilled this winter. I don't enjoy excess heat after being born and bred in a cool climate but I also hate like heck being cold. I think that of any renovations one tackles, ensuring one's physical comfort comes first! Insulation, a heating system, and no drafts. 🤧👍🥶 Take care, from an old Geordie great granny in Alberta. 💕🍁☺️
Hi Jude, my old house is also drafty and chilly so I totally understand. I recently bought an electric blanket that goes under the bottom sheet. You can preheat the bed so that it’s lovely and cozy when you turn in at night. It makes such a huge difference when the bedroom is cold. I didn’t have it last year and bedtime was not fun. You probably already have one, but if not you wouldn’t regret it. ❤
I’ve always loved doing manual labor, especially when I had an office job. Now I’m retired and still enjoy it a puttering in the garden. I admire your spirit and you’re doing a great job around your lovely cottage.
Probably the 375th person to say this but I save your videos for Monday mornings to stave away the start of the week scaries! Your wholesome, calm, entertaining and informative videos make my Mondays that much easier to bear. Thank you so much for every minute you put into your content, it really does have a positive impact on so many people in so many ways ❤ 😊
Jude if you are still able to, water down the cardboard in your raised beds before filling with soil. It will decompose easier, and allow worms to work their way through the soil and make it better. Unfortunately I forgot to do it, and regret it 🤣🤷♀️
Thank you! Luckily it’s been in there all week and has got pretty soggy thanks to the thick morning dew and intermittent rain - the soil should hopefully be arriving tomorrow!
Jude- I have an idea. I have heard of people putting a bat house up near their home when they need the bats out. I have never tried this myself but maybe look into it and then when they are all out living in the luxury condo you made them you can do the insulation! ❤
Thank you for another delightful video! If there is one place that gives me peace, rest, and comfort it it the ocean. I spent the last weekend at the ocean just trying to lift my post-election funk - not completely successful, but a step in that direction. Time to start knitting long “draft snakes” - surely you must have odd scraps of yarn. The other thing you might want to think about (when you have “free time”) is building bat houses and putting them up close to the side of the roof that is letting the bats into your loft. The bats might “migrate” on their own, and when you get a “bat expert” in the early spring they might just be able to “relocate” the bats that are still in your house. I am amazed at how much you have accomplished this week! Oh, I sometimes wish I was 30 years younger and have back some of my mobility and energy. I’m sending you lots and lots of positive and helpful vibes. Take care - until next weekend. Salam wa sa’aadah
The sea is so calming isn’t it? I’m glad it helped a little with the post election funk. I can imagine it would take a whole lot of ocean time to make that better. I definitely need to get my scrap yarn out! Yes! I’ve got to bat boxes up in the trees when I renovate - so I can work on the roof! 💗
Evening lovely Jude. I had a draughty front door in my old house. Living in the middle of a field, on a hill, the wind blew around it something fierce. We installed a 'fringed' (!?) draught excluder at the bottom of door which won't catch as the silicone one will. Also I'd advise doing the same with your letter box as the draughts will blow a huley through that too. Escutcheon dics on your keyholes, and new foam excluders around the doors. Stay toastie and all the best ❤
Thank you! Yes! I’m going to get one of those brush excluders for the door! Luckily the letter box already has a brush thingy on it, so that’s one less thing to do!
Jude, I’m so glad that you are getting your home warm for the coming winter months. You are such a hard worker and have accomplished so much. I had your old video come up about your yarn shop and then if you weren’t wearing your burgundy sweater that you knit on this video, I thought that was cool. It is such a treat to see your Sunday videos! See you next Sunday. Thanks for sharing your life with us. ❤ from Canada 🇨🇦
After a week from hell (autism + moving = much overwhelm and burnout) I really needed the peace and comfort your videos bring! Thank you for being an oasis of calm in an ever chaotic world ❤
Hi Jude, I've watched all your videos on the cottage. I see you have draught problems at your front door. Have a look in the Hardware Shop or online for a draught excluder strip which includes a strip of brush along the bottom, either to stiick on the door or to screw on along the end of the door. An alternative to this could be a rolled up longer piece of knitting placed along the bottom of your door. I too have huge mental health problems, have become a recluse and cannot leave the house. Your radient smile and gentleness are something special. Your videos bring sincerity and joy to my gloom. Thank you so much 💛
❤Jude, you are the person I needed in my life today to get me motivated before diving into my books to study for my exam in December. There were and are so many hurdles (health and mental health) along the way for this exam I was about to give up. Seeing you taking step by step to get your projects done and to accept when things dont go as planned, you are not a -giver-upper. That is strength that is earned through doing, failing and in the end still succeeding. Thank you for YOU!❤😊
This is the sweetest message! Thank you so much! Good luck with your exam prep - I absolutely feel your pain, I go to absolute pieces in exams. You’ve got this!! Plan something lovely as a reward for when it’s over! 🥰
Me too, Jude's motivation made me pick up my viola to practice after a day off. I could have easily slipped back into my old habit of snuggling on my sofa watching UA-cam on a Sunday night when all my fav UA-camrs are post.
I am old enough to be your mom. So I wanted you to know I enjoy your channel. I am so proud and impressed with your determination. Live in the States. Keep on doing good work!
Jude, I absolutely love watching your videos each week. I'm from England originally, now living in the US, and this brings me a bit of home in this crazy world. I love your adventures and you are so lovely to listen to. Keep up the good work!
Hi Jude. I live in Nidderdale in an uninsulated house, so I feel your pain. Unfortunately, I also have single glazing and no central heating (and landlords who live in the Southern hemisphere who have no idea what it feels like to be cold!). I would 100% recommend buying a heated undersheet for your bed, as well as a snuggly heated blanket for your sofa. Those two things kept me alive last winter! My partner is an ecologist and I've been on many a bat survey with him. The bats won't halt anything. You just can't disturb them while they're roosting in your loft over winter. Once it comes to summer, you'll likely need surveys to check there's not a maternity roost there before doing any work to the roof, but even if there was, all that would happen is an ecologist with a bat licence would come and supervise what needs to be done to mitigate any harm to them/their roost in order to complete the work. Sadly, no protected species in the UK can stop development or works being done, no matter how significant or rare. There are just more hoops to jump through and boxes for the ecologist to tick. Stay warm in this cold snap x
Luckily I have a LOT of blankets in this house! I might do a little blanket tour… because that’s the sort of exciting content people like to see, right?! 😂🙈
Thank you for your kindness to moles, room for everyone 😊 I relate to your extreme reaction & hysteria at flying things. I have a similar reaction to sudden loud noises, once in Aldi somone dropped a glass jar of jam. I screamed & shouted ‘I’ve been shot!’ Don’t know where on earth that thought or shout came from, I was utterly mortified 😂😂😂
I am SO jumpy! I can’t watch horror films or anything because the jumpscares really throw me! Noises and sudden movements - no idea why they bother me so much! I like nice, expected , planned things 😂😂
I do enjoy watching your videos. You are a real and honest person; it feels like I've known you for a long time. I really like that you show us real and hard work. As much as I enjoy home decoration, cosy and slow living channels, I really love yours because necessity comes first with you-like raising beds in the garden and insulating your house with a few effective things. Plus, your videos always have such a lovely, warm atmosphere that makes them a joy to watch. I do understand you for not going to the attic; I couldn't handle the bats either...
hi Jude with regards to the wasps nests you must get rid of the old ones or they will keep coming back and the numbers will increase each year. love watching your channel.
Another enjoyable episode. I too live in a cold and draughty old cottage. The best money I've spent so far, has been on a log burner, so much more heat into the house rather than up the chimney. If your budget will stretch to it I'd highly recommend it.
I've just binged watched all of your content whilst unwell with a virus. Jude, you are such a beautiful human. I was so touched to see the memory of your parents infused throughout your videos. You have a such a wonderful supportive community via the comments. I'm so glad to be able to follow along with your journey. 🤗
I bought several of those plastic handled buckets for my grands to tidy their toys with, and let me just say, it’s good to see SOMEBODY using them! Thanks for the visit.
😂😂😂 I have a stack of them - I used to use them to soak yarn in, when I was running my yarn company - and kept them because it’s becoming apparent that I never throw anything away! 😂😂
Hey Jude, your video had me laughing out loud this week. All the wildlife moving into your house (bats, wasps nests, birds etc). You never give up & are always cheerful about the problems that occur, tackling it all in your stride. Well done for winterproofing.....I need to. Try a brush strip on the bottom of your door. I've started DIYing again, thanks to you & your vids. They're my Sunday evening treat & I look forward to tuning in. You're also good for my mental Health too, a win win. Jude you're amazing, well done .❤
When I was getting my old drafty house winter ready, I put up temporary curtains between the different rooms. That way I could close off areas that didn't need as much heat. I also put this plastic adhesive over especially drafty windows. It helped a lot! Stay warm, and I'll see you next week😊
Love that you can laugh at your fails and struggles, and share them with us as well as your success. Problem solving is always more interesting than things going perfectly. I'm also very happy to see that you reuse the grass roots. And wire and cardboard. The storytelling of your camera work is noticed. The deer, the bats and the snails provide a real cliffhanger!
I’m definitely getting better at problem solving!! I’ve had a few people say ‘Jude I wish I had your skills’ and I think the only skill I really have is the problem solving! Which makes everything feel more achievable!
We have pipistrelle bats but ours is a nursery roost which means it is only females and babies and they are only in residence from around March to September/October. They winter elsewhere. A bat specialist should be able to tell you if it is a nursery roost or a year round roost. We were able to get our roof renovated as long as the work took place between October and March -not ideal in wet west Wales, nor I’m sure in northeast Scotland!!
So on the bat survey the previous owners had done as part of their planning application, it said that they could have work done from October to April, out of breeding season, so I’m assuming it’s a nursery roost 🤞 (but yes, terrible time of year to get a roof done! 😂😂)
You are like a warm hug to watch.Seeing you tackle day to day problems with your calm demeanor is a lesson for us all in this frenetic world.Love your videos! Have a good week Jude.xx
Hey JUDE. How are you? You're a young man with a old school soul. You didn't argue when your parents was teaching you and showing you things and information you might needed in the future of your life. When the day come that parents are no longer available. Each week there's a improvement in your life or home. Smiling through the good days and bad ones. Hope you have enough 🪵🪵🪵 for ☁️🌨️💨🌬️. Young man take care of yourself and Thank You for the video 🏴 🇺🇲
Central heating?! Wow, what a luxury 🤣 we only have a log burner as we are still renovating our cottage. Oil filled radiators have saved us, and please do think about a dehumidifier before winter sets in. They help keep damp down and mold etc- plus they help with drying laundry, if you don’t have, or don’t want to keep using the tumble dryer. Much love from Herefordshire.
Don’t know how I got your videos in my feed, but know this: you seem like a wonderful person and I wish you all the best in your cottage. I will be watching and enjoying your content, the world needs its calm kindness now more than ever.
Hi Jude- I have a weatherstripping idea for your door. What about a “sweep” style strip (It looks like a long tiny broom)? I think that would be more forgiving when you open and close the door and would also keep the snails out :) Love your videos! You’re making good progress on those raised beds!
@@rewildingjudeHi Jude! I see from a newer video that you installed the sweep weatherstripping. Looks like it’s working nicely! Now I need to get one for my door :) Anyway, Happy Christmas to you and Sven! 🎄🦌🎄🦌🎄🦌🎄
Eco4 grant will insulate your loft for free. Try a length of foam pipe insulation on the bottom of your door. Works a treat! 😊 bubble wrap pinned at your windows will cut heat loss by 20% 👍
Good to see you are adding thermal linings to your curtains! We used to live in a 300+ year old stone cottage in Worcestershire and I had curtains everywhere! At the front and back door and especially at the bottom of the stairs as they led out of the sitting room. They worked a treat! Now we are up in Orkney in a stone Victorian farmhouse. There is some insulation in the roof, but there isn’t much space and not much room to add more. We do have double glazing, but they are tall sash windows, so not the best. I’m gradually making interlined thermal curtains and blinds or adding thermal linings to all the windows. I have also hung a warm curtain at the back door and another at the glass door to the conservatory. I have hung a thermal curtain lining at the front door, but have yet to make a curtain there… it’s on my to do list! We now have a curtain covering the archway between the sitting room and dining room (a pair of doors are on the wish list) and it has made such a different to keeping the sitting room warm…not so good when we want to use the dining room though! For keeping yourself warm, an electric blanket in your bed and an electric throw to cozy up with in the sitting room will help a lot. I’ve been wearing a lightweight hat indoors for years, moving to a warmer one when it gets really chilly! Thermals and layers and woolly fingerless gloves & sock all help, but I expect you know that! Good luck with all your endeavours to keep warm…see you next Sunday. Hope you don’t have too much snow, we had hail lying today…a mere 2.5°C, but that’s not counting the windchill caused by the 40+mph winds we’ve been having! 🥶. Take care and keep warm! xx💕 PS I too have had your old UA-cam videos pop up…I need to make time to watch them!
If you have a door to shut the ipstairs off, shut it for the winter to keep warm air on the lower level. If not try hanging a thermal drape or heavy material @ the bottom of the stairway to the upstairs. We so look forward to your videos. Much love from Rehoboth, Massachusetts USA ❤❤
My old house has plenty of uneven gaps under its old doors. I just use sand snakes to stop droughts. They slide away with the door when the door is in use, and I simply kick them back into place when the door is closed. They do the job fine and are totally natural made from cotton fabric and sand.
You should consider tacking the sides of the curtains to the wall. It looked like there is quite a bit of daylight coming through - which means that drafts are going to get through. I used comforters hung over the curtain rods to insulate my windows.
We have settling snow tonight I told you The Highlands was cold in the winter. I lost my last Springer Spaniel on thursday early hours, Iv'e been a dog owner for 59 years and I feel broken but Jude your video has cheers me up no end. Thank you. you need a draft excluder. My son would love to go into your loft he loves Bats.
Re-perpose is the way to go! I get all grassclippings from the nearby church, I also pick their plasticpots from the garbage bin.. Here in Sweden we gave had such high powerbills so I try to manage with as little heat as possible. That means curtains by the door and xtra clothes..keep up the good work!
Just wanted to say how much me and my husband are enjoying watching your videos. We've just purchased a crofters cottage in brora and are so looking forward making the same cost effective and practical insulation solutions you are using for the home. Also watching you put wire mesh in your raised beds, my husband thought you were absolutely bonkers 😂 until we heard your reasoning. Stroke of genius, especially since our pumpkin patch was decimated by moles this year. Looking forward to more videos ❤
Hi Jude. Our first house was the same, no insulation and no central heating, original draughty sash windows. We bought velvet curtains for the windows and door curtains and used a brush draught excluder attached to the bottom of the door. I know you can’t do the roof insulation yet but that was a massive game changer.!!
Well this is one of your happy viewers, relieved to see you doing what you can to scut down draughts! It makes my heart happy 😉👍 That is a huge gap under your door, just as an interim measure, use an old towel or something to tuck under there once you’re in your cottage for the night…not pretty, but pretty effective 👍🥴. If snails can get under it, goodness knows what else can 😂… you probably have snails, mice, moles etc. having a party downstairs whilst your sleeping 😱. Thank you for another lovely video. Stay warm! xx
HI Jude, I have only just discovered your channel and I am so pleased I have. I have binged watched most of your videos already. Firstly, what an absolutely lovely person you are. The world would be a much better place with more people like you in it. Secondly, I so admire what you are doing and I am very jealous as it is still my dream to achieve what you have and in Scotland too. I have renovated a very old cottage I bought in France a few years ago and it is by no means an easy task and is extremely hard work but the satisfaction in giving a tired property a new lease of life is the best feeling in the world. Doing things in your own time and on a budget is often the best way. It is especially brilliant if, like me ,I began with basic DIY skills and experience but developed and learned new skills. It adds to the satisfaction when you step back, look at your work and can say “I did that” as opposed to relying on others. Of course there are times you need experts. I love how resourceful you are and thank you for sharing some of your ideas. Just remember, everyone has their own way to do things and you are doing great. 👍
Thank you so much! That’s such a lovely thing to hear. I am exactly the same regarding very basic skills and experience - and it is SO satisfying to do things yourself! I built a window seat at my last house and every step of the way I’d go and look at it and be proud! I’m very excited to take on projects here - and learn and grow my skills!
Jude is an inspiration! This may not make everyone happy because of the plastic content but here's my tips for single glazed windows, and double glazed windows in bathrooms and kitchens. Bubble wrap. Spray window with water, not too much, and press on the bubble wrap, flat side against glass. You'll still get some light through but it will help keep the cold out and help combat condensation on the glass in bathrooms and kitchens. I reused the same bubble wrap for 5 years before we had all 14 single glazed windows replaced. You can attach it with double sided sticky tape but it will tear when removing so can't be reused. It does look a bit strange from the outside but you don't have to do it if you hate it. We have no close neighbours but I'm sure the postman rhuoght i had lost the plot. In the past we also used sheets of cut to size pvc held in place with magnetic tape around the window frame so it can be removed and reused. I still use it in the bathrooms. I attach it to the wooden frame around each opening window so that the window can still be opened. We live in an old cottage in the north of England. In one particularly cold room I adhered a roll of thin insulation to the outside wall before covering with lining paper and then painting. It made a significant difference in the winter and its been up for 3 years now. I also took a chance on using it inside a cupboard against the same outside wall. No more damp musty smell in the cupboard. Use with caution as it doesn't suit all buildings. Always ask a builder with good knowledge of old buildings. Curtains fitted close to the windows are better at keeping the cold out. Roman blinds do the same and you need less fabric than for curtains. I make my own curtains and blinds and use a padded interlining. I look at them as an investment. We also have keyholes in the outside doors. The plates around them are metal so we use magnets to keep the winter draughts out. We also had little black slugs, and the rain, coming in under an old original door which led to the back garden. We couldn't stop the little blighters. Eventually our local builder came up with a solution. He removed the door and replaced it with a window. We didn't even use the door because there was another one just 5 feet away. We were sad to see it go but we're over it now 😢 Before the door was replaced I used upholstery sponge sandwiched between the gap at the bottom of the door to almost seal the gap. I then used a lot of Duck Tape on the outside to try to keep the rain out. It mostly worked but I gave in eventually.
A dehumidifier and an infra red heater !! Absolute game changers. Dry air takes a quarter of the energy to heat as damp air does.. plus it’s great for drying your laundry quick. My little infra red heater is keeping me warm in a poorly insulated caravan this winter (though I’m having a go at insulating).. the heater cost just £25 And uses only 350w per hour. It’s so brilliant, heats up the furniture and you rather than the air.. And the heat is dry heat, so doesn’t produce condensation or encourage mould, and the heat from it feels like a log fire, really comforting. I highly recommend ! I am so glad I found it. It’scalled a ‘warmlite’ (I’m not sponsored, I just love it). Also just even sticking that silver bubble wrap stuff on the ceiling as a temporary measure can help immeasurably, especially if you double up. It doesn’t look great but it’s warmer 🤣 Good luck! Thanks for your great content. I’m on a similar solo practical mission, so your vids are very comforting.
I should really be trying to sleep, and thinking I’ll watch tomorrow morning, but it’s no good, gotta watch now! These vlogs of yours are addictive Jude..

Hirw a handyman to go up there for you. My guess is you would regret it.😊
Get the insulation in a.s.a.p. Get someone to do it for you
Mine has been removed during renovations (it needed upgrading anyway) - can't go back until the electrical work is done (very very slowly) it's much colder without it.
What a lovely comment. Read it through twice and am so appreciative of everything you said!
Thanks so much Johnny!
I’m loving the adventure so far - even if the cold this week has made me go a bit stir crazy! Cannot agree more about the heated throw blanket - I LOVE mine - it gets used all the time at the moment!
Hope you’re staying warm! 💗

Hi Jude! So you helped me teach a math lesson this week! The students had to figure out the area of a raised bed, however I teach in an inner city, most of the students didn't know what a raised bed was...I showed them part of last week's video when you were building them. They loved watching the video..third graders, so 8-9 years old...thanks!
Ahhh I love that!! (And I am TERRIBLE at maths so I’m glad I could help! 😂)

An old fashioned idea for sorting the draughts under your doors?
A fabric "sausage ", fixed to the door with half inch "poppers and studs". Will move with the door, so no trip risk.
I just use Velcro to keep them stuck to the door. 👍🏼
Yes, I was thinking about that too. You see them on line and some are really cute.
or old towels, blankets rolled up to place at the door, especially at night time
@@bonnyphotinos4262 Great idea!
Try a curtain or hang a blanket in the doorway to upstairs. It will at least keep downstairs warmer.
Your the only UA-camr that I click like on before I even watch it’s just a guarantee I’m gonna to enjoy it
Ahh thank you! 🥰💗

Same here!😊
Me too!😂
Loving your videos.
Id be worried about the bat poop.
@@lmrharper3586it's great fertiliser
I'm going to try the bubble wrap trick for myself :)
Agreed! Preparing is key. The wildlife will be amazing there. Getting set up for winter together. ❤
When camping, I've used old newspaper under my mattress pad to help with insulation too.
Flannel sheets are wonderful, highly recommended
You need just as much under your bottom sheet as you need on top of you, and def flannelette sheets.
A full rug under the bed to keep chills off.
The door curtain is like putting a coat on the house where I live in the top of a hill. Really makes a difference. Your dog when you get them will keep you warm too. 🐾🐾🐾
I also put door curtains on my back door and exterior basement door
Having a dog will keep the deer away from your garden. All the best Jude, I enjoy your efforts. people before you survived the winters and so will you.

I’m so grateful that my journey has resonated with so many people!
Just keep your fridge and freezer well stocked, especially when snow is forecast!
Definitely!! My big freezer in the shed is full - I had to cram in some batch cooked soup earlier on 😂 it’s actually snowing here at the moment but I don’t think it’s supposed to come to much!
Nothing wrong with tins, pasta, oats etc.
You are an inspiration Jude, a complete inspiration. You won't have a clue how watching you live your life brings joy to so many people. Thank you.
Thank you!! I am loving life here so far!
I have an electric blanket. I switch it on 15 minutes before I get into bed. As somebody else suggested, I put a down duvet under my bottom sheet. A warm bed really adds to my quality of life.
I do the same with my electric blanket
before I get in bed. I love getting in a
warm bed.❤
I would suggest a electric mattress topper instead of blanket. Heat rises. I have one and would never go back to electric blankets.
A hot water bottle can be great in the winter months. Putting it in your bed to warm it up before you get in makes the bed much cosier, then shift it down to your feet when you get in. It's hard to fall asleep if your feet are cold. 🥶 A knitted cover for it is even more comforting.
I love my hot water bottle!! It’s got a dog cover on it that I had as a kid!
I cannot live without my hot water bottle, and I live in Florida😅
I wear socks to bed and my cat sleeps
at the foot of my bed. Nice and toasty.
Everyone has such a love for you Jude,..like having a bowl of warm soup watching you...get an amazon wish list im sure some of us Judettes would help you out xx

Judettes, brilliant! Very close to my name, excellent wordplay!
@@denisemeredith2436hahaha I really do! There’s not much on it at the moment as I don’t really need anything! But I appreciate the thought 💗
It not just the cold but the damp you need to be aware of.
Yep! Luckily the cottage is so draughty, damp isn’t a huge problem so far!
Thank you!! 💗🥰
The wasps should be dormant during winter. Thus, a good time to remove old nests.
I enjoy your humor. 😊
That might be a job for the next rainy day!!
Well you are now officially an influencer.
oh, i feel you on the uneven floors vs door battle. consider a draft dodger, a sand filled tube that you lay down in front of the door when it's closed (also works to keep the door propped open in warmer days). they range from cute to practical, but they do work well and, bonus, are too heavy for a snail to nudge out of the way ;). I made mine, but etsy or amazon are always an option.
I think I might make one!! I’ve got a lot of handknit socks I could repurpose into a long draft excluder… that might be a job for the next rainy day!
@@rewildingjudeyup. I remember my mum making one with old tights when I was younger. Worked a charm! As does a good old fashioned hot water bottle. 😁
@@rewildingjude My friend's parents had them; they had attached a small key ring at the end of each and they lived on a hook, behind the curtain, when not in use.
Dead exited I’ve found this channel yaaaay 🎉
Ahh welcome aboard!! 🥰🥳
Ditto Montréal 🪟
I’ve just tried something different with that film instead of putting it over the whole window I’ve just put it over the glass in my sash windows so I can still open when needed it’s cut the heat loss and draught a treat
I was going to post all the tips and tricks I knew for keeping cold out and warmth in but I see that I'm way behind.😊
After reading everyone else's useful suggestions there was only one left in my repertoire that I didn't see mentioned, and that's curtain length.
I hope you don't get too chilled this winter. I don't enjoy excess heat after being born and bred in a cool climate but I also hate like heck being cold.
I think that of any renovations one tackles, ensuring one's physical comfort comes first!
Insulation, a heating system, and no drafts. 🤧👍🥶
Take care, from an old Geordie great granny in Alberta.
Electric blankets are truly the best!
Bats are nocturnal so if you light up the loft with bright lights they’ll stay roosting while you add the insulation to the loft x
💗
So many great comments here! I haven’t a lot to add, except that I too love every episode! You warm my heart ❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
I was thinking a fringe/brush type draught excluder too!
Thank you!

Thank you for being an oasis of calm in an ever chaotic world ❤
I hope you’re doing okay! Moving is SO much change at once!

Jude you are a ray of sunshine and your smile is contagious! ❤

hi Jude with regards to the wasps nests you must get rid of the old ones or they will keep coming back and the numbers will increase each year. love watching your channel.
Paper wasps never reuse old nests, Mary.
Woner if you could vacuum the wasps nests
Another enjoyable episode. I too live in a cold and draughty old cottage. The best money I've spent so far, has been on a log burner, so much more heat into the house rather than up the chimney. If your budget will stretch to it I'd highly recommend it.

Jude you're amazing, well done .❤
Snails invading! Thats nothing! We stayed in a cottage in brittany where there were frogs crawling in under the door!
But it also means it should be safe for you to go up and insulate- be brave!
I am always uplifted watching your videos Jude. We are cheering you on. Love your honesty and positivity.

Hi Jude-
I have a weatherstripping idea for your door. What about a “sweep” style strip (It looks like a long tiny broom)? I think that would be more forgiving when you open and close the door and would also keep the snails out :)

You need one with a hard strip and then brushes that will move with the door and flatten so the door doesn’t stick. Amazon sell them 😊
Yes!!! I’m going to pick one up from the DIY store this week - now the snow has melted and I can leave the house again!
🥶. Take care and keep warm! xx💕
PS I too have had your old UA-cam videos pop up…I need to make time to watch them!
Merino wool base layer & wool Hat & socks are my Canadian advice for cold & damp!

So sorry about your dog. It’s so sad but as you know, given time the pain lessens. Big hugs!
Oh I’m so sorry to hear that! We had a springer spaniel when I was a kid - he was the one true love of my Dad’s life!

Hi Jude. Our first house was the same, no insulation and no central heating, original draughty sash windows. We bought velvet curtains for the windows and door curtains and used a brush draught excluder attached to the bottom of the door. I know you can’t do the roof insulation yet but that was a massive game changer.!!
I need to get a brush draught excluder!! It’s on my list when I feel like braving the snowy roads to go to the DIY shop!!
Stay warm! xx
I just messaged my sister Jude uploaded a new video. We are both hooked 🥰❤️
Ahhh I love this!! 🥰💗
Me too 😄
HI Jude, I have only just discovered your channel and I am so pleased I have.
Re manual labor - you are so right. You appear to have gained a whole bunch of fans all around the world. Kudos. We are all rooting for you.
Just adore your videos. The content, the music and your humour. You’re a special person Jude & I’m so happy your channel is flourishing 😊
Thank you so much!
It doesn’t look great but it’s warmer 🤣
Good luck! Thanks for your great content. I’m on a similar solo practical mission, so your vids are very comforting.
Jude, because of your post, I look forward to Sundays. Keep doing what you are doing
Thank you so much!!
I should really be trying to sleep, and thinking I’ll watch tomorrow morning, but it’s no good, gotta watch now! These vlogs of yours are addictive Jude..
😂😂😂 thank you!!
