  • As cloud gaming services go, Shadow gives you full control, by giving you a computer with a GPU in the cloud, and that's it. You can then install whatever you want, and game from any device. Check out my review and benchmark of this service in 2022.

Oh I missed that one, great video, thank you as usual, very informative and vulgarized.
I live in Paris so as French, Blade definitely made several headlines specially during the pandemic as the avatar of what we call "La French tech" , their PR team became really stars for a time and got invited pretty much everywhere in tech shows tv shows (some people even went as far as saying that Shadow did more PR than upgrades) as they had a couple renowned actors for the commercial front that in itself garnered a lot of attention for a time (look up the french/english UA-cam channel and you'll realize its scope).
Of course, after a brief period of grace, things gradually turned sour when it came to the actual service. They misjudged the impact of the GPU shortage (one cannot blame them 100% for that though) but still kept on making empty promises of a better future that got broken one after the other , would it be regarding hardware upgrades or , much more importantly and as you rightly put it : VM availability after purchase. From a day it went to a week, then a month, then quarter and finally a year, that alone was enough to slash their support base.
After they came back from the dead through the OVH purchase, price doubled and went from 15€/m to the current 30€, which again slashed a piece of their existing subscriber base. But new ones came along the way as availability is finally reliable.
Now the big question for me is : is it worthy to drop 360€/month on a service whose Datacenter rigs can only offer performance of the past 6 years ? even though I'm certainly not one for overkill multi-thousand euro/dollar/pounds rigs, I cannot help but do the math on the longer run :
I take 5 to 6 years for me from the initial full rig purchase to the first significant component upgrade delving into the 400-500€ pricetag. So I estimated (give or take) that a 10-year period with a rig able to run any game at 1080p with 50-60 fps reliably with high to very-high details overall, costs me 2000€, initial rig + subsequent individual upgrades included and discounting the monitor + quality tower + sound system that are elements that I don't change unless they fail. That's ver simple maths actually and result in a roughly 200€ per year fee at the minimum.
    Problem is : Shadow yearly fee = 360 >> 200.
Now one thing in favor of Shadow is that its CPU+GC performance at any given time is above the kind of rig that I purchase and maintain over 10 years. GTX 1080s can run most games at ultra setting without any real problems, as you aptly demonstrated with Doom Eternal, though the stream was choppy due to it being done over another cloud stream running I suppose, but I believe your words saying it was fluid all along at 60.
So the big question is : how often and when will occur the first major free datacenter upgrade that keeps getting promised without additionnal costs to the user, one of the core benefits that the Shadow touted as the founding pillar that is supposed to make physical rigs obsolete ? We had a partial answer to that a month ago, when Shadow announced more powerful, RTX 3080-based VMs. Problem is, there *is* quite a big additional fee in the end : a whopping 45€/Month. Which costs pretty much exactly what a similar rig would cost if bought like old times and maintained in kind over the following 5 years.
So the only real benefits of Shadow for now are of a practical nature :
-No need to go shopping every 3 to 4 years and carefully study every part combination by browsing through competition noise between brands and sub-brands and then look for possible sales then build your rig, configure the whole thing in an optimal way etc... which takes time and energy no matter what and you can always end up not buying the right stuff that go well together for a good price.
-Less pricey electrical bill as your gaming rig will never be "in charge" pulling a lot of current to power a running graphics card + big CPU
-Being able to access that gaming power from virtually any terminal, would it be a craptop, old pc tower, a mobile, tablet or whatever else comes to your mind.
So as things stand, there *are* real benefits to switching on the cloud... but definitely not on the wallet side though I'm afraid.

I’m still on there infinite ♾ Tier and it’s incredible it’s sad that they discontinued it for everyone else but hopefully 🙏 the new upgrades that we are getting soon will make the price worth it to others that are on the edge of getting it

Approximately 200-250 euros and you can build the same setup or even better, depending on what pieces you can get from the secondary market. Much more appealing is GeForce Now, where for about 18 €/Month you have access to RTX 3080, not some crapy GtX1080 and you have to pay 28 €/Moth.

How was the Doom experience? The video was looking rather choppy?
Also, how does Shadow compare to Parsec with a similar spec?

    • @TechGuruDirect
      @TechGuruDirect  2 роки тому +1

The video is choppy because of the screen grab software. IRL it was very smooth. Honestly both Shadow and Parsec on your own server are good, experience wise. Shadow is easier and potentially cheaper though, although the specs offered may be less than what you get of you roll your own.

so far i have stadia on chromecast ultra, geforce now on my laptop and i have tried boosteroid. stadia is OK if you're not that serious about gaming, geforce no has some of my steam games i enjoy and has very good streaming quality. its a shame geforce wont every have call of duty which is my most played series of games. the ain issue for me with the concept of shadow is the very low storage, if i went with shadow then installing warzone/modern warfare would use all of that storage and to buy more would be so expensive. i probably shouldn't have sold my gaming PC last year :(

I've actually had a good experience with my Shadow, but I also have realistic expectations. Shadow's machines and streaming service are designed to perform best at 1080p 60hz. If you have a 144hz monitor like I do, you will get stuttering if you try to set the Shadow to use the full 144hz. Not sure why it allows you to but I am willing to bet at least a few people saying the performance is bad are trying to run it at a higher than 60hz refresh rate. Could Shadow stand to see some improvements without increasing the cost? Absolutely. But for 33$ a month (I pay 3 bucks extra a month for another 256gb of storage), I can play most games at high settings and have a solid 60fps. For the few I can't hold a solid 60, nine times out of ten reducing the shadows settings a notch or two takes care of it.
The thing I appreciate most about the Shadow is that if something goes wrong with the hardware, I don't have to pay to fix it. I also don't have to worry about keeping the system free of dust, or worry about temperature control. Another nice thing is being able to access it on anything that I can install the app on. So my cheap tablet, my phone, or even an ancient laptop that would go in the garbage otherwise, can all run the app making them the equivalent of a decent gaming pc if my primary desktop fails.

It's still surprisingly capable. I am able to play games at 4K with little issue. Of course it has no ray tracing, and more taxing games do suffer performance issues - so yes, I do wish Shadow offered something more here.
