How I Grow My Indoor Jungle in One Room - See my Setup!

  • Hello friends! 💚
    Today I wanted to show you how I grow my indoor jungle, all in one room. Yup. All 300+ plants on 5 shelves :)
    Now, before we start, I want to mention this video is NOT a plant tour - that's a video I hope to bring out soon. I know it's way overdue 😫 It is coming though!
    In this video, however, you will see some of the things I use that make it easier for me to grow so many plants in one room. I will take you through my setup and I will talk about some positive and negative aspects of it. Yes, it is definitely not perfect yet, but we are getting there. I feel we are 2 Omar shelves away from that moment.
    Then again, I always feel like that 😂
    I hope that you will enjoy the video - it's a bit long and I tried to make it as short as possible. The next one will be shorter, I promise!

      I’m so clueless, even if I know the song I don’t remember the artist or vice-versa haha.
      My hardest part are very limited light options(and grow lights are a problem) and no humidity

    On the Omar shelf I applied a thinnest plexiglass a bit dept than he shelf itself. The result is more space to put your plants and above all no water spill accidentally on the above shel and as I grow orchids I must pay attention of the stems. It s' so comfortable and so easy to wipe of. Have a great day! I love watching your tutorials above all the hoyas that I am trying to grow. Fm Italy

    Since you asked about obstacles, try living in the Southern California desert! With humidifiers, I can barely reach 40% humidity. Some days when we have 0% humidity, my plants have to put up with 25% humidity. And for at least 4 months of the year, our temps are over 100 F. Yes, it’s a struggle but my plants do grow well including Philodendrons, Hoyas, and even a couple orchids. Enjoy your videos and your plant set up!

      Oh wow! And here I am, struggling to get it down. Maybe I can send you some of the humid air and you can send me some of the dry air and we will all be in balance? 😂 I wish it could work like that. Hoyas and Philodendron will love the heat and some Orchids too. I would recommend a Vanda, they LOVE warm weather, but it would be a b*tch to keep happy in low humidity. They are gorgeous orchids but it's high light, high humidity, high temperature for them. Thank you for watching 💚

    I stand for your setup! 🌱😊 We all could use work with our setups. I’ve been pressured to get the glass cabinets for aesthetic, but my plants are growing really well with a soltech aspect light at the top and extra lights on each shelf. I have dry issues in my house so I have a echoholmes humidifier. Each house is is different. Also there you are! Love your content 🪴❤️🌱

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 роки тому +1

      I love the look of the cabinets and some plants might not mind the lack of air excange and airflow might be enough (with a small fan inside). But I wanted to do one with miniature orchids (that I don't yet own) and they would need air exchange. And putting aroids and hoyas inside... I don't know. They will eventually get big and I would have to move them out and get them to adjust to my regular enivonment, no? But it would work well for plants that stay small. Oh, I wish I had issues with dry air. Much easier to deal with than all this extra humidity.

      @@BasiePlants I can’t Imagine dealing with all that humidity. Another great video, Miro! So enjoyable. To make it easier to clean wood shelves, seal them with clear polyurethane. Works like a charm for me! I do use trays often also. I live very far from an IKEA (so sad) I wish they had online store and delivered product. Good advice to give philodendrons moss poles early. Hard to add one later. I have low humidity and just live with it and choose plants accordingly (now). I do have one of those 4 shelf/ plastic wrapped, small greenhouses for propagation and plant hospital.

      Oh, they do have an online store here. I was thinking of doing something with the shelves, even painting them, but I haven't gotten around to doing it. They are not as bad as I make them out to be, there are some solutions, but I am in love with Omar and how it is easy to adjust 😂

    Hi Miro! I really enjoyed seeing your set up and having you explaining the pros and cons to each one. You have some really beautiful plants. I live in an older house, built in 1925. The living room and dining run together and there are windows only on the SE side, where there is a 2-story house, so don't get tons of light. ;-( There is one window on the front wall, facing E, but there is a closed in front porch, so again, not a lot of light. Those rooms hold the majority of my plants. I have a few in the kitchen and some very neglected Phals in my craft room. I'm working on treating them better. I don't spend a lot of time in there, so "out of sight, out of mind". Since the house is so old, the outlets are few and very far between, so grow lights aren't really an option. I don't know what the humidity is because I don't have the thingy like you do to tell me. ;-) It's all trial and error when I buy plants, they will either like the environment, or not. I just try to stay away from high light loving plants. I would like to see a plant watering video and a dance video. Thank you so much for sharing!

    • @BasiePlants

      I also stay away from high light plants - I tried Vanda, and so far it is not a major success! 😭 Serves me right. Oh, I am sorry you have all these windows and other things blocking the light! You're right about all of us having different conditions. It took me awhile to learn how to keep my plants happy as we only heat with a woodstove. At times, It's a real challenge to keep them all happy but I finally got it figured out. I found for the most part my Hoyas do best with leca. I'll look forward to your next video. Be well and happy! Cheers :)

      Wood stove would be a challenge! We used to heat the house like that too. It was always super hot around the stove and then as you get away from it, it gets quite cold, especially in the corners! I am glad you found a way to make it work though. I am not surprised they do well in LECA. It works well if it's warm and not too humid. Have a great day! :)

    Phenomenal video! Thank you. I like all the ideas you've presented, as to the shelf arrangement, the "hack" for the metal shelf etc. Your plants look incredible. I'm having trouble typing this because of all the drool on my keyboard from looking at your plants and the starters. I also very surprised which the humidity levels you maintain. In my area this morning it was 27% - great for cactus but difficult for tropicals. Even spraying several times a day doesn't help.
    With all those lights you have spread all over the house, I'm surprised you're not wearing sun glasses when they're all on!
    I'd be interested in a video about you. How long have you been doing this? What got you started in collecting plants? Basically everything about your journey getting you to this point in your life.
    Overall - a great video. Stay safe and stay healthy, you bring a lot of joy to all of us. we love seeing your plants and hearing about your trials and tribulations.

    I grow my plants in several rooms. My biggest challenge is balancing the right growing conditions and the aesthetics I want. Since my plants are all over my living areas, I want them to be displayed nicely. I've spent a lot of time getting shelving and grow light setups that are both functional and pretty. I've got good light (southeast and southwest windows) but I need to supplement with grow lights in gloomy winter. It is also dry here, so I use a humidifier for my Calatheas and find that my aroids and hoyas grow faster when I keep the humidity between 40 and 50 percent.

I would think in your case you deal with mold a lot yes? One thing I would worry about, especially in my experience, is mealy bugs. That is so interesting to hear! For me, it is the other way around - humid winters, drier summers. So I sometimes run my humidifier in summer but it is sometimes a hassle to fill. And they do well with 50% humidity anyways. It doesn't go below 50% but it is not as crazy humid as in winter. Now, it can easily get over 80% if I don't pay attention. The walls are white and I think I'm going to put a couple mirrors behind the shelves there on to reflect the light back on them better than just the white walls

      And distilled water is the same as what comes out of your air conditioning unit or your dehumidifier... Just keep your dehumidifier water tray clean because it can get yucky and slimy not sure if that would hurt plants or not. My need cleaned right now so I'm not using that water for my orchids or houseplants but when the containers are clean I use that water and the plants love it

      Distilled water is a bit purer. Distilled water has a lower pH and lower ppm than dehumidfier water so it's not the same. It is very low in ppm (around 40 as I said) but I wonder what is in there :) Distilled water has a ppm of 0-3 so you must use some nutrient everytime you water because even rainwater is not that low in ppm - it's usually fortified with nitrogen.
      Eh, old houses usually come with small windows. At least here. And I imagine in Ireland too? I can't see them putting too many windows as they probably tried to keep the heat in.

And rainwater especially after a thunderstorm has a lot of nitrogen in it... That's why I after a storm in the summer everything looks so much greener... I’ve got some Hoya (most are Australis) recently so will see how they do with the coming winter. Don’t have any grow light or humidifier or etc etc. I have big problem with ficus lyrata. One now established and start to growth after 4 years hahaha. On is a stick i banished it to the balcony. One I just cut to the bottom. If that dies I won’t shed a tear hehehe. I have ficus Audrey and ficus lemon & lime o replace those. Yep they need lots of light. All plants need lots of light.😜 Australia is a lots warmer compare to your country, luckily, I only like 5% or less of house plant species I don’t really into the variegated hype (need more light to keep the variegating & slow growth) Hahaha plants. • @BasiePlants

      Sharing water is easy way to spread pests and other nasty things. I don't share water with hoyas and orchids but they are still on the rack trays as I spill water all the time and there are LEDs underneath so I would like not to get electrocuted. That's why they all also have cover pots in my setup (well that, and because I use net pots). some of my aroids are on the same tray together and they do share water, but I am not as concerned there. I find when we cram plants next to each other, pests transfer easily anyways because the leaves touch. I try to remove them with hand, the ones that I see. Then I spray the plants with paraffin and dish soap and sometimes I use pyrethrin if it's a tough infestation. They are not as touch as thrips, red spider mites or Boisduval scale (this one is a B*TCH!) I hope you can get rid of them soon. Just inspect regulary and try to remove as many as you can. Alcohol swabs work great too!

      @@BasiePlants I guess you would freak out with the way I water my orchids! I get a big Tucker tote and fill it with Rainwater up to about a half an inch or an inch below the pot level of my orchids. I then mix up my nutrient solution and it which usually starts out with a Cal Mag supplement and I think the brand name is Cal Magic... I then add micronutrients and seaweed emulsion, about once a month I had a teaspoon of Epsom salts per gallon to that... And as an aside Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate magnesium is important for chlorophyll production and the sulfate is sulfur and thrips hate sulfur... I was told by Ed of Ed's orchids in answer to one of my questions on his UA-cam channel about sulfur and he told me that the Epsom salts will help to kill thrips and other bugs... So for used to be used buy gardeners before all these fancy insecticides came out they would sprinkle it on the leaves and the insects would die when they ate the leaf. Period. And last to my nutrient solution I add a weekend fertilizer for orchids most of the time the first number nitrogen is higher... But I mix it up and sometimes the middle numbers higher and sometimes the last number is higher. Rick of Rick's orchids on UA-cam got in touch with the better Gro people and I asked why there fertilizer didn't contain calcium. And since it didn't what did they do can I add calcium to their orchid nutrients. They told him that calcium would be destabilized or do something harmful to their fertilizer so it can't be added but the way they got calcium to their orchids was they bought pelleted lime and put it in the media when they reported and also sprinkled a little bit on top of their orchids once a month. So once a month but it's been more like two months now I put a few pinches on top of the medium I orchids are in which is parked and they're planted in clay pots some I'm transferring 2 slotted pots which I then put in a clay pot because which I then put in a clay pot because they will tip over and also the clay pot absorb the moisture that it sort of gives off in the area. I've never had trouble contaminating my orchids by reusing the same water over and over again. If you have healthy plants you don't have to worry if you have a new plant you're not sure of then do that one separate... Ed of EDS orchids uses the same water over and over when he's watering his orchids for doing an Epsom salts flush. I would waste too much water with my 70 orchids if I didn't reuse the nutrient solution. And after my orchids soak and that same Tucker tote off and on for two days that's how long it takes me to get them water because they sit in that tote for 20 minutes or half an hour I then use that water for my house plants because it's full of nutrients so the house plans get the leftovers and sometimes I water that nutrient water half and half so that I'll couple hundred plants get some of what the didn't use when they were soaking.

    What do you do when you do not have rain water? or how big is your container for rain water?

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 роки тому

      I have about 200 liters of rain water. :) I collect it every time it rains and I have some old paint buckets in which I store it when I don't use it. I also use water from my dehumidifier. I prioritize my plants - if I notice I am running out of rain water, I will save it for hoyas, orchids and plants in SH and the rest will get tap.

    One guilty pleasure song ? I've got a whole Spotify playlist of trashy songs.😅 (the name's "Power walking racoon"...if anyone wants some "time to clean the bathroom" songs)
    ...it's kinda messing up the algorithm though.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 роки тому

      I love IKEA shelves. I mean, even the cheap Hyllis is not the worst shelf. It's extremely cheap and works for small plants that stay compact. Unfortunately, most of my plants don't have that growth pattern 😂 The song that I was dancing too is considered trashy, yes 😂 And I listen to good music most of the time, but this is like, cleaning song.

    • @kathleenmurphy2379
      @kathleenmurphy2379 3 роки тому

      It sounds like you need to have a fan circulating the air so it doesn't settle and sometimes in the kitchen with all the dishwashing meal prep and cooking we add to the humidity in that area. My living dining kitchen area got so humid last winter because I had the humidifier on constantly the lock on the front door froze and it was hard to get into the house if the door was locked..
      So this year I don't have the humidifier on constantly you have to also remember if you have a lot of plants together they create their own humidity as they transpire and the water evaporates that you use to water them with

      @@martinanemcokova917 if you get a dehumidifier the water that comes out of that dehumidifier you can use to water your plants. There's a lady in Canada who I learned a lot from about orchids her name is Carolyn her husband's name is Jack. They combined both names for the name of the UA-cam channel which is spelled j a c o l y n s orchids. She doesn't keep her orchids in a greenhouse she has but the greenhouse would have water dripping from the walls if she didn't run a dehumidifier in the greenhouse. She lets it drain into what was formerly a small little goldfish pond and that's the water that she uses to water her plants with. The dehumidifier also adds a little bit of heat to the greenhouse. She keeps her cymbidium orchids in there and her geraniums that she / Winters plus she has an orange tree and an apple tree in there. So get yourself a dehumidifier and you can always set it not to go on as often if you find out the air is getting too dry! Hope that helps a dehumidifier would help and it sounds like you don't need a humidifier going
