  • A newer VCR, and I use the term loosely since this is nearly 20 years old.

This is just like my first VCR that I got in 2001, except mine was 2 head mono. This particular Orion mechanism is bulletproof. I used the hell out of mine, and it still worked fine when I gave it to the thrift store a few years ago.

They were still making linear mono only machines in 2001?

This was my first VCR in 2001 or 2002 and it still worked in 2016 when i got rid of it. Pretty well made machine imo. Great video.

I have an Orion VR-213 VCR that shares a lot of similarities to this Memorex. The Orion is only a mono unit, so no Hi-Fi. The units were probably both made by Orion. The remotes look nearly identical, except mine doesn't have an audio select button on it.

I didn't know they were Walmart special. It's basically the same VCR as my Memorex MVR4049. They also made VCRs with the same exact front but a different mechanism, the one like in the Pioneer VCR DVD combo that I recently smashed. I've also seen Orion, Electrohome and Misakai VCRs that look like this. And Citizen I think.

I call it the Wal-mart special, because I remember seeing these new in Wal-mart. They were fairly inexpensive, and the other Memorex branded electronics were really cheap junk, so I assumed this was too. This model was also sold under Durabrand (Wal-mart's in-house brand), but I do remember them selling it as Memorex, so maybe they only sold this VCR as Durabrand in the US.

I've seen Durabrand VCRs at the thrift stores in my location, but they were the late Funai ones.

@@mrmagnetoscope I just assumed all Memorex and Durabrand of this era were late Funais. This had me surprised.

I had the Orion model, at one point. It had the same kind of front panel.

I got one of these second hand a good while back, except that it was branded Orion and was mono. I actually used it for quite a while. It was nothing special, but it did the job.

I remember these VCRS, they were decent but very cheap compared to the line of Memorex VCRs I remember seeing in the late 1980's. According to my memory, they were very expensive and were more on par with the Canon, NEC and Sony VCRs of the day. I believe that Radio Shack briefly carried them. It would be neat to see one again, but I don't think there were very many sold.

Great video everything proven vhs tapes don't stop playing at all it's your VCR player itself stops playing y people don't let people know about mode switches needs cleaning every now and then everything proven people keep there mode switch clean out everything proven people will never have playing problem's at all or tapes being eating at all

It would be a nice VCR, if it weren't for that pitiful rewind/fast forward speed. My "portable" HITACHI from 1982-ish(?) is faster.
Edit: Memorex was a good blank media (various tapes, CD-R, DVD-R/+R) manufacturer. Dunno what they're doing (if anything) today. For quite some time, it's JUST a brand.

This is just a sad little depressing machine..It works but has nothing at all special about it. I would rather have a mid 80s VCR when they were at least trying to be creative..This is just sad!!!

You know what's funny? I've kinda warmed up to this little VCR. I've been using it in my living room, and it's been just fine. Picture quality is average, but in this case it's connected to a modern flatscreen anyway, so the gains from a better VCR are minimal.
It's definitely boring though. Extremely boring!

@@probnotstech I have got to get on the hunt for a VCR myself..I have two, one that basically crapped out now with a tape stuck inside. The other one is having major picture issues.. So I am 2/0 for a properly working machine.. Every time I see one I like that you review, I am on ebay looking.. I see a goodwill in my future..

@@Bucksman36 I avoid ebay. Usually it's VCRs that someone bought at Goodwill and is reselling them for profit on ebay anyway. Thrift stores, local buy and sell, and garage sales for me.

Problem with goodwill is you can get non working machines that they wont exchange. And these days thrifts charge $10-20 for one vcr
