An accomplished, insightful, humble, funny, and articulate Hmong chef. That’s bridging and connecting with people through good food, fun, and laughs. Love it!
Whoohoo for Chef Yia! Not only did you open insight into what Hmong food is to others, but also to me, a Hmong person. It really is hard to explain! It is so great to see that you are sharing our food and culture with the world. Keep on doing what you do.
Lol totally understand Chef Yia's point on his mom lol. That's every hmong mom. My moms make fun of those who thinks they can cook.... " oh you can cook, come this weekends ceremony and cook". That's why I always act like I dont know how to cook. Lowkey the best chef in "MY HOUSE"
😂😂😂😂 the Hmong are so proud claiming someone else foods such as laos food and twisted and called Hmong foods...khao piak sen, khaon poon, papaya salads especially dude said Hmong traditional food is larb smh....😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think he put it in a very good way when he said hmong food was like a philosophy or whatever. That segment was clean cause it's true. The food we eat are really just a culmination of where we lived. Laos, thailand, etc. But I think pure hmong food is boiled chicken and pork with greens. I don't see other people cook chicken and pork in a pot like we do.
Had the sardines with green onions, coriander (cilantro), and chili pepper growing up as a kid babysitting the younger siblings. Only had the dish once in a blue moon (once or twice a year) since moving out after college. It would have been nice to see pork belly boiled with mustard green soup - Water, pork belly, mustard greens (chopped or whole) and salt to taste with a side of steamed white rice. Simple as that... that's what I love about my mom's cooking... But it's for a show so it probably wouldn't garner much reaction as the sardine dish.
This was always my summer school lunch, i was embarrassed eating this front of other but dang mom cooking always good asf and the best, this sardines dish brings back childhood memories, keep the history going .
As a hmong I am embarrassed when hmong people claims certain foods as theirs. Truth is hmong don't have a special food. We come from China and our food is similar to chinese food in ancient times.
im so glad, as a hmong person, that we are starting to finally be getting recognize after years of residing in this country who we helped fought a war with and for and still not getting known or recognized by its people living here. Does that make sense? lolz
I still believe Hmong food is similar to Chinese food during ancient time. The problem here I see today is that every Hmong person thinks 'Hmong' food is laotian, thai, vietnamese, which to me is truly not our true identity of food. You must be truly ignorant to believe "Hmong" food is what I just mentioned above. You have to go back in ancient times when the Hmongs lived in China to discover the REAL answer. We're talking like 5000+ years ago.
Im sorry Jason, that isnt Hmong food. He had the right intention to let you try hmong food but that food is for (hmong kids who are hungry but mom is not home to cook food) a bit advance for your palette. The brother should of made pork stew with mustard green soup to start you off. That dish is way too salty for you.
Hmong people have claimed foods such as egg rolls, pho, sweet pork, kao poon, kao piak, sausages as their own. But these are all just knock off from lao, viet, thai, chinese knock off. If you're real hmong you know hmong food is rice and pepper. Boiled plain vegetables. Boiled fresh whole chicken. Boiled pork with green vegetable leaves. Stir fry pork with ginger.
Love your story similar to my own family! Cute baby refugee photo. Congratulations on the Minneapolis chef of the year 2019! 🎊 Funny mom story lol. Keep up the great work chef yia! ❤️
In another place and another time, Chef Yia Vang would be an axe welding cavalryman in some warrior general's army hacking away at enemy ground troops on an open desert somewhere in central asia.

I like to cook the sardines then do the mix. I think it brings on more flavor.

He said “Hmong” food all WRONG
How come I have never seen this show?
I’m so lucky that I’m Hmong because I can EAT pho all the time :>
I think pho is a Thai food 😳
Pho is vietnamese. Hmong food is rice and pepper. Vegetable for the wealthy. Meat once a year.

Totally 💯 percent agree with you @crazjdavola! 👏
The boiled pork with green vegetable leaves needs to be shown to the world. Eat that with pepper and boom!
Sounds like a racist show to me
The brother made some cat food and the white folks ate it up. Hilarious! Keep it up!
Cut that beard please ewww!
OMG...i thought I was the only one. I can't stand his beard, I just want to cut it off😂😂😂 I think he will look better without the beard.
