      this is a great channel to learn from and I learn a ton from it as well. other learning tools are in the planes file on your hard drive or wherever you saved DCs on, in program files, Eagle Dynamics, DCS world, mods, aircraft, f-16c,doc and in Doc there is the manual that is made for the plane for DCs. the manual for the F-16 is 300 plus pages. there is also missions to learn the plane under training in the main menu of the game. every plane for DCs has its own manual and quite a few have training missions.

    I'm new to DCS and I find Cap's videos explain things so well even I can understand them.
    I've been struggling with radar modes and how to fire AIM 120s.
    Thanks Cap for helping me.

    my understanding of radar activation range.
    12:38
    F16: range from ownship to target when AMRAAM goes active
    the F16 manual is saying the range between airplane and target at which AMRAAM goes active (pit bull). But you have to remember, this is BEFORE firing the AMRAAM, so the range between airplane to the target is ALSO the range between AMRAAM to the target.
    a very simple way of understanding:
    if you fire outside of this range, AIM120 takes Axx seconds to go active (pit bull) then Txx seconds to hit. if you fire within this range, AIM120 starts off ALREADY active (pit bull) and takes Txx seconds to hit, no Axx time to active.
    but weirdly i think it doesn't work, cause theoretically when your Axx goes to Txx, you should be right on the radar activation range but it keeps dipping down. maybe it takes a second for the aim120 radar to start tracking eventho it doesnt rely on the plane anymore.

    3:14 These OSBs share functionality with your Nose Wheel Steering button on the Stick. If you press SHORT this button while you're in the A-A Mastermode, it will do the same as pressing these OSBs. Pressing it LONG should cycle throught the different types of missiles you're carrying. But someone said this function is not yet implemented.
    6:09 Here the DCS module starts differing from Falcon BMS in Radar Functionality. I'm not sure if BMS has this Situation Awareness mode. At least I've never used it. In BMS it has the RWS, TWS, VIS (which I also never used) and STT modes. You cycle between RWS and TWS by pressing TMS Right LONG. In TWS the Azimuth of the radar scan is reduced from 120 to 60 degrees, with the sweep area centered at the Cursor (until it reaches its gimbal limits). And at least in BMS, if I switch to TWS while my cursor is on top of one contact, it will pre-lock that target automatically, and the next 4 or 5 contacts in range of my scan will be automatically set as secondary targets. I can toggle between these targets with TMS Right SHORT (or is it TMS Left SHORT, can't remember that at the moment. I'll have to check that in BMS).
    If you press TMS Up on the primary target in TWS, it will then fully lock it in STT. Pressing TMS Up on a locked target in STT will un-lock it but keep it as primary target in TWS (if you were in TWS prior to the STT) and pressing TMS Down in STT un-locks the target completely and goes back to the previous mode with no target selected.
    While in RWS you can also change the Azimuth in two different ways. One is via the Off-Screen Buttons on the MFD. You've already showed this method in previous video. The other method is with the TDC Slew. You slide the cursor all the way to either side of the screen and pass beyond it. When it crosses the edge of the radar screen, it will come back to the center, but this time with the different scan azimuth. By default, the FCR is enabled with 120° azimuth, when you cross the edge, it will cycle to 60°, and if you repeat the process, it will go back to 120°.

      @@grimreapers You're welcome. And I have checked some of the infos there about BMS, and yes, BMS has the Situation Awareness mode (how come I never used it?) when you quick lock a contact on RWS mode; And target cycling is done by pressing TMS Right Short when you're in TWS with more than one contact tagged as targets.

      TMS up locks a target, TMS down unlocks.
      You can use these buttons on the radar mfd and in MSL OVRD or Dogfight modes (both modes have their own button) TMS down while in MSL OVRD or dogfight mode switches to vertical scan 60 degrees, TMS up gives you boresight mode.

So here are what i see on the real aircraft grip/stick .... TMS, DMS, TRIM, CMS - they all require 4-way hat switches on the grip. i am plum out of 4-way hat's on the grip/stick (virpil T50 CM2 grip only has 4 4-way hats)... Unless i sacrifice my ability to view left right up down, which I just can't give that up since i am not using VR nor am I using a Track-IR. I'd really like to keep it close to the real F-16's and not put a hat that is suppose to be on the grip, over to the throttle. @tipnoel 4 роки тому

      In case you didn't know, you can use what is called a "modifier", a button of your choice that can change the fonctionality of every other command on your Hotas. You can for exemple assign a single 4-way hat to both DMS (while pressing the modifier) and TMS (without pressing the modifier). I know your struggle, I've been there too, looking around with a hat is hard. I strongly recommend you to get a DelanClip, it's cheap, it's reliable, and you can put it on a headset, that will change entirely your DCS experience, without ruining you if you're on a budget. Here's a link to their website, so you can check for yourself : delanengineering.com
      Hope that helps, cheers :)

      That also has to do with the altitude and aspect of the engagement. In higher altitudes, the optimal range will be longer, because the missile will fight less air resistence on its path.
      As for the aspect, if the target is coming towards you, this will also increase your max range, compared to when the target is moving away or notching/flanking.

    Why the missile guidance is completely borked? The radar guides you to point aircraft over 15 degree left from target and clearly downward, that would be the straight intercept heading for missile. But once launched, missile takes away, turn hard right toward target and starts to climb....
    If the guidance system would had worked, missile would had flown straight ahead and never start turning, not for even long time after launch as target turning doesn't matter.

    So why wouldn't you use SAM mode? It lets you keep an eye on the other hostiles and doesn't warn the target he is locked, so at first sight is a better idea. Its not quite TWS (can't lock multiple targets in SAM as you can in TWS, but its part way there). Is it a more accurate/better lock in STT since the radar is not still scanning and is concentrating on just one contact? The disadvantage of STT is the target knows he is locked, and other hostiles could be sneaking up on you without you knowing where they are. Maybe you could do a video experimenting with the two modes to explore differences in range/accuracy/likelihood of target breaking lock? Thanks for the video as ever Cap.

    • @firemedicjm911
      @firemedicjm911 5 років тому

      The reason is that in SAM mode your radar is not locked to the target so If the target moves out of the scan area before the 120 goes pitbull it will lose track. You definitely can use it in SAM mode, there is just more of a chance that you will miss.

      SAM mode will alarm the enemy who has RWR audio enabled. Because your radar starts scanning the target rapidly out of standard pace but doesn't lock to it. Anyways the soviet RWR will give the pilot information of the range by the radar emission strength, and they know the distance when you can launch missile and starts maneuvering to make you waste possibly launched missile.
      And if both sides has datalinks (like soviets GCI doctrine is, if the GCI can't see the target or threat, pilot is not allowed to engage but needs to flee) that negates your TWS, SAM etc surprise launches as everyone knows where the missiles are going. Why doctrine is to use STT so you maximize the probability to hit and you get maximal information. You are not there alone, you are there with wingman and maybe even with another group, and there is no sense to pretend that you are not seeing them or engaging them when you have hostile intends by flying toward enemy (capable guide missile).
      you should use TWS only against bombers and similar non maneuvering targets.

    • @dicksmith4296
      @dicksmith4296 2 роки тому

      it was because he was at about 6k altitute. as a general rule of thumb, a missile's range doubles every 20,000 feet. this is because the air is more dense at low altitudes, therefore more drag and resistance and a harder time turning. at such a low altitue, a sidewinder would only be effective at about 2 nm.

    • @William3000x
      @William3000x 5 років тому +2

      If you shoot in STT mode, your aircraft radar is already emitting a hard lock track frequency to constantly track the target and also feeding data to the missile, so it will alert your target that you're shooting it, no matter what type of missile you use. Even AMRAAMs will use data from your radar during STT launch until it reaches Pitbull, or the target breaks lock, which will force the missile to activate its own radar.
      In essence, you can kinda think of the AIM-120 as a fancy-and-improved AIM-7, in a sense that it has it's own radar and doesn't fully rely on STT locks to reach the target, but the techniques surrounding its deployment are pretty much the same, with the exception that you can't fire an AIM-7 in TWS mode, it has to be an STT launch.
      And a small correction here, if I may: AIM-7 is Fox-1.

      What makes the most sense for me is a datalink to recive data from the mothership's radar, since the missile's radar is off in the first stages of the flight. Without any datalink to the aircraft, how would a missile detect that the target has initiated an evasive maneuver, and pull up a drastic turn to intercept the new calculated impact point?
      AIM-7s with absolutely no radar on itself, they rely on the aircraft data to perform this action. AIM-120 should be no different.
