Thank you so much for watching and your kind words. I’m not so happy to see my face on the screen so it’s pretty natural for me to try keep it out of focus. Cheers 🍻
Hi Thomas, congratulations regarding the refit. Smart move before heading to the South Pacific. The dinner looked amazing! Of course, not a bad thing to have Hanna as your guest. As a bonus, at least you both could take the night off from having to speak English. 😎🇳🇴 Thanks for the video. All the best.
Rigging is probably the one thing that production and more specialised boats have in common. Watch the last episode of sailing Tranquilo and also watch the Sailing Aequus where they talk about the challenges with new production boats. Like you have said many times I'm not either here to impose my opinion and having a boat is always a combination of things. For me what comes first is structural integrity. You do take fantastic care of your boat and it's a good move to do this refit before heading out to Pacific. Fair winds and I'll keep watching your videos.
Thank you Sir. Please remember I’m no expert only sharing my experience and things from my perspective. Guess being careful is a result of experience as I have lost not only one but two masts before. All the best 🍻
Wow! Wtih that meal preparation, you could certainly start a cooking channel! This is the first video of your's I've seen. You have a nice boat, a nice 'babe', and a nice vlog! I'm now subscribed.
Good to see the happy spirits and coffee at the dock. Docking is always the most stressful part of yachting. I feel your relief coming through the screen.
Not knowing is the worst part as solo sailor. I like to be prepared and ready. It’s some (for BE FREE) pretty complicated spots here, so yeah it was a relief getting an easy access. Thank you for watching 🍻
Yeah it’s when people take pride in what they do you know you’re at the right place. If it’s a restaurant or hairdresser same feeling and it’s rare to find nowadays
Love your drinking mug and your perfect choice of intro music ;-). You did an awesome graphical illustration to explain your coming rigging replacements, maybe shown a bit too fast...but one can always slow down the playback speed. Keep the good episodes coming, it's always a nice watch. Cheers.
Thank you for the safety logic in the retrofit with all original parts. You can sail with confidence, knowing that your rig is not a variable in the equation. Seems so logical at such a large, well equipped marina. Have you ever looked at the scale of your equip and relative safety margins compared to the 45? I assume your vessel has added safety margins based on the loads your rigging sees. Another good reason for the larger, safer craft. Big Hanna fan.
Thomas iv been involved in full refits , mostly in Phuket & what you are doing is very sensible as ten years cruising is so mush more wear & tear then a yacht going out occasionally from a marina . I even recommend checking & changing the For stay after 5/6 years (Frew experience) The strobe is the best light you can have on a dark night in a strong wind (Even though it is actually illegal as a nav light on a yacht) The goose neck is a must to find if the connection to the mast is secure , All rivets or bolts have no movement or corrosion & dont be shy on looking over there shoulders to make sure things are put to on right (Looks very professional there) Up East not so . Fair winds my friend . (I used to sail a 68 Ft. ketch single handed , Just think ahead )
Another great episode Thomas! It is very good that you explain that the rig does not last forever. There are so many parts that hold the mast up and often if only one part fails, the mast comes down. And the part only fails when under extreme pressure, not sitting in the marina. Yes, I also have lost a mast when a swagged end fitting on the upper shroud broke. The corrosion could not be seen looking at the fittings from the outside, only looking at the break could the corrosion be seen. I replaced all the wire, turnbuckles, and fittings, fortunately the mast wasn't damaged and no one was injured. I think many sailors agree it should be done, but it is expensive (!) so they keep an eye on the rigging and hope to see a problem before the mast goes over the side.
Thank you 🙏🏻I’m gonna share the cost of refitting hopefully in episode 54. Working on getting the quotations for 35 and 45 feet to compare with my 55. I’m pretty sure this figures will fit the same curve and be representative as well. All the best! Cheers 🍻
Only a friendship? Well damn I’m up for those little chocolate ballon bowls you so eloquently executed! What the actual heck lol I might have to stop watching this channel before I start embarrassing myself! 😆 Also, seems like a great place to get your work done indeed! Very thorough. 👌
Hey Thomas again a cool video to watch, would be great when you share the expenses replacing the rig, then we all have a closer and better look on average yearly (10 year) cost replacing and refitting
Thank you 🙏🏻My Intention is to share the cost and everything when it’s done. Looks like it will be a delay so not the next but SwT 53 will most likely cover this. All the best 🍻
Aye, What a thorough job on the rig! Really dedicated guys like these can’t be cheap? Very pedagogical items and stories he could show and add to the story. So where you working as a chef in your previous life? Looks tasty! 😋
Every time before I plug in shore power, I take a multimeter and check the power and frequency. I'm kinda surprised that a 55ft boat is deck stepped, but looking at that rigging tells me that it is very sea worthy. That refit must off cost a small fortune. Friends off mine went to the same guy, with a problem with their hydraulic backstay. Within a day they resolved the problem. I guess your Insurance will go down with the new rig. Fair winds.
Thank you! Lots of yachts even way bigger than BE FREE have deck mounted masts. It’s pro & cons with everything but this is a strong rigg. Happy to hear you have great references in the rigging company. It’s gonna cost a lot for sure😅 I would have to take a phone call to my insurance and ask about this. All the best 🍻
Those Garmin wind instruments are eye wateringly expensive - why not go with the wireless version ? - I find wire down the mast can chafe and sometimes get impacted by halyards
Yeah it’s ridiculous expensive. But I prefer cables as it’s more reliable. With Selden masts cables are no trouble as they go in a separate tube inside the mast. Clever solution. Cheers 🍻
It was made in Norwegian so perhaps difficult. But it’s just rate the things 1-3 Bird - fish - Cow - sheep - pig. Then Potatoes- rice - pasta and list goes on... Sweet sour salt spicy etc. Makes it dirt easy to come up with a menu your guest would love
Great job Thomas! Will you cover cost? Even rough order of magnitude would be helpful. Also, would appreciate if you could talk about fuel management. I only have 415l on my Beneteau. Would you cross the Atlantic with that? I know you have jerry cans but have you used them? I know you have to be patient if you're fuel limited but is it wise to cross an ocean with so little? My engine is a 75hp Yanmar.
Thank you 🙏🏻 I will cover the entire cost in episode 52 or 53. Depending on when it’s all done. When I crossed the Atlantic I carried enough diesel for 2/3 of the distance. I will do the same for the Pacific. I only used around 200 Liters on Atlantic. We motor the last 24 hours as the wind disappeared and we where on a schedule for my friends flight. Also used the generator a lot for making water and cocking. My arguments for carrying so much diesel is if mast comes down or some other issues I should make it to shore. Depending on your consumption it’s impossible for me to say what’s correct. Diesel last long time and if not used on a passage you could use it or sell it later
Hi Thomas, great videos and wonderfull boat. I search a boat since 2 years, and visited many boats between 44 to 54 feets around the med. All of them had a lot of refit to do : engine, sails, electronics... I have a good idea of costs refits except for the rigging. How much that cost you for this Bavaria 55 ?
Hi Armand, in the final refitting video I will share the entire costs of everything. It’s expensive but looking around seeing so many sailors loosing their mast and based on experience I’m sure it’s worth it. All the best 🍻
Thank you 🙏🏻 I enjoy inviting friends to dinner, even though I’m no professional or any chef skills. Just for fun and good company. I m going to take measurements on my mast as it’s down and put it out here. All the best 🍻
Thomas I love your cooking . When can I apply as crew ? Btw i thought whenever I will buy a sailboat is this the order I should look for the best condition: 1. Hull, 2. Deck, 3.Engine, 4 Rigging and Mast, 5.Sails, 6.Cable, 7Electronic ? What is your order to check a used sailboat?

Ha ha🤣 True words my friend!! I’m super excited and it feels like been waiting forever to continue my adventure. Guess the Covid situation feels like an eternity for everyone. However I’m lucky and can’t complain being in a beautiful place with nice temperatures. The day BE FREE starts her journey out into the Pacific definitely will be an emotional moment. Cheers 🍻
It’s really not that easy yet. Some simplified entry rules for vaccinated travelers are starting to appear. However French islands still have closed borders here and also in the Pacific.
Ha ha Thank you I guess 🤣 I don’t think it would be a very successful channel though as I’m a solo sailor and not a chef 🤣 And I really suck at picking up women and Hanna is just a friend. Hanna for sure is good looking and could do it but she doesn’t have a UA-cam.
Every second without a UA-camr's face up in the camera is potential for content. This UA-camr gives lots of good information, words and pictures. ✌️
