Great review PK Shiu! Thanks for taking the time to put together this video. I too ran into the issue with the float device not hitting the sensor switch to determine whether the unit needs to be filled or not, and was happy that you provided a simple yet clever solution. This unit does move quite a bit of moisture, and as you mentioned, is quite reasonably priced. It's also a fairly easy/convenient design in terms of filling it up with water (no dreaded bottles etc... to fill and lug back and forth) for this reason, I purchased it, and am quite happy with it despite its obvious design flaws. I do find that my wick gets moldy quite quickly. I have it running everyday, all the time, in order to maintain approximately 40% humidity in our house during the winter months. I also have an EP9 unit on our main floor. The 821000 unit is on our 2nd floor. I'd say the wicks last about a month and need replacing at that point. I also noticed the wicks I buy from Amazon, though they are the same part number (1043) look a bit different than the one in your video. Not sure if the one I have is better or inferior, but they're made by BestAir, and they're supposedly an extended life version with 150% more strength than the standard filter.
Thank you so much for this video PK Shiu. I just received this unit yesterday, and set it up. Like you, I found it to be rather cheaply made with lots of design flaws, and like you after filling it up, it was flashing the F. I repositioned the top so it would make contact with the water level rod and it worked very well at first on high, then I tuned it down to low, which also worked for awhile, but then the dreaded flashing F started, so I unplugged it and left it overnight. I tried to play with it a little this morning, but still the flashing F! I quickly ran out to the curb and grabbed the shipping box because I was prepared to send this thing right back to the store (Iallergy in my case). However I found your video, and I am so glad I did. What a simple fix! Thank you so much for sharing. When I get home tonight, I will try your solution, and let you know if it worked for me or not. Again thank you. You have to love Google :)
Thank you Mr. Shui for reviewing this product. I saw another comment on the HD website highly recommending that people watch your video first before they purchased it. I am very glad that you did and I will try it now that I know what some of the flaws are.
Mr. Shiu - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! We were seriously ready to repack and sent this plastic tub back to Home Depot. You are totally brilliant and clever! We had the flashing lights and unit wouldn't work. The instructions were SO badly written that I don't realize that the Styrofoam cube wasn't packing material, but the actual FLOATING DEVICE...how junky! AIRCARE should pay YOU to rewrite the instructions AND redesign the unit! Your realistic observations are right on the money comparing the cost of the unit verses the shoddy design. Again...YOU ARE THE BOMB!
Thanks so much for this video. I haven’t used mine in a year bc of issues. My skin is so dry though I was desperate to try this again. Same issues. After your video though, it’s working!!!! Thx again 👍🏻👐🏼😁
Excellent review, thanks. Been trying to find a console humidifier with big enough capacity. This one has its shortfalls, but now they are a known quantity at least
Ownrisk Media Yeah for the price, this one works. It’s the wheels, the capacity and the easy filling that I like. I have it going now all day all night with the New England dry weather at this point.
I just received my new unit today shipped from Home Depot (109.99 plus tax), the top part of the float on mine is at least twice the size as shown in your video, so I guess they resolved that issue. Mine has a overflow hole on the side of the unit, so if you over fill it you will have a mess. Otherwise everything lined up perfectly and went together easily and even on high it is quieter than expected. So far, I'm happy with it.
I CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR 1) VERIFYING WHAT I THOUGHT WERE PROBLEM AREAS TOO 2) YOU GAVE ME SOLUTION BEFORE I SPENT HOURS TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT MYSELF
I watched another UA-cam review on this product that was very helpful to me. I was trying to figure out why my humidity levels didn’t make sense. And he showed how the humidifiers rate was actually showing the amount of DRY air and Humidity levels, which is why they didn’t make any sense to me. Has anyone else has this problem? And better yet a way to fix it?
Thanks for the hack with the float. I was lucky I guess when I first set it up, no problem with the float. Then I changed the filter and kept getting the "F" error message. Your solution was easy and cheap. Best of all it worked. Again thank you.
Thank you for posting this video. I was going to buy one but after watching your research I will check similar humidifiers to compare quality and designs. Much appreciated!
This humidifier is actually perfectly usable once I figure out the sensor thing. I still think this is the one to get if you need the volume. Just FYI.
There are 2 options. A free-standing large capacity humidifier, made by Essick. Or installing a more expensive unit that connects to your furnace that needs electrical & water.
I had an Aircare product with that same crappy three button control. The auto fan setting never worked correctly, and later the humidistat failed. I am much happier with the Vornado Evap40 which you also had in the background.
I just purchased a very similar product and this video is fantastic. I feel like I could have figured it out, but this saved me an hour of frustration.
Thanks for the review. Good idea with the float. That is something the manufacturer needs to fix. It looks like the fan housing could be designed better to fit on the base.
i just ordered one today. i saw your video a month or so ago. easy to just take a bucket of water over to it and fill it. no need to roll it around. if it does the job. who cares about anything else. got a great price including shipping on Amazon was $113.00. when mine arrives, i will have to see if i need to add an index card to mine. i have a honeywell quiet care. i decided to go tower since i need the space. and it gets tiring having to fill up separate cannisters (twice in 24 hours). the honeywell is great for a humidifier but it is rather loud.

Like you I wish they would fix the simple design flaws and make the sensor separate, or farther away. Mines they screw up on the tank design. It doesn’t sit flat while filling and etc. Same like you, only brand, or rebadge versions I recommend as only ones that actually humidify large area to a reasonable level and easy to take apart and clean. The humidifier is not that smart - the CF indicator is on by counting hours of use. If you unplug it and plug it back it, the indicator light should go away. Also clean the sensor on the cord - maybe it is not measuring any rise in humidity after it is operating.
@@PKShiu I am also going to see if I can find the manual online as well I don’t know why didn’t think of that before, thanks for responding so quickly. Sorry your float sensor wasn’t working well. So far both of ours are working good.

Thank you for this video, 8 years later they haven’t changed a thing. Such a horrible designed unit, not a care in the world. But like you said this is the only evaporative humidifier that is rated 5+ gallons and doesn’t cost $300+
Hey, I know it's been a while since the video went up, but in case you see this I was wondering what your thoughts might be on how the Essick compares to the Vornado humidifier you have in the back there? Very thorough review!
Orient the styrofoam block where the rod is nearest the back of unit. That will change the angle of the rod so it correctly lines up with the switch. That should solve the problem.
Hello, I don't know if you still have that humidifier but I'd like to ask how well it controls humidity. I think I fully understood how this unit works and all I care about now is whether this unit can increase humidity high enough compare to the Vornado that shown in the video. Please let me know. Thank you.
Hi, We use both daily. They both works well, but we use the Tornado in a smaller area, whereas the Essick we leave it on 7x24 on our bedroom floors and we can definitely feel the humidity. Fundamentally the Essick is larger and so require less frequent refill, that's all!
Just replaced my old Bemis 826-800 with a new 826-000 by Aircare. They have corrected the water detection design flaw by making the top of the rod much larger. No more issues with the rod not pressing the switch!
Excellent video. You are right as this is extremely poor construction!!! Also the instructions were very unclear but you cleared things up nicely. Thinks for taking the time!
I replace them once a year (season). They cannot be washed. It’s paper type filter. I buy the generic ones sometimes, depending on price. They seems to work fine.
I have one from 2022 and although it looks a little different, all the mentioned design flaws are still there. But it is quiet, holds a lot of water, and can be rolled to the sink for a refill. It's got very cheap plastic and just as PKS states, it is not at all intuitive figuring out how to install the wick.
PK Shiu oh, thank you. i am looking for an apartment size 650 square feet. and i found a review mentioning your review on UA-cam. Why I came here. Thanks.
Did you find something you like? I'm in the same boat. The vornado seems decent, but the plastic can crack apparently (very bad with 4 gallons of water), and I'm not able to tell how easy it is to clean. I see good things about the HCM350W, but it's not made for quite that large an area.
I picked up a humidifier from the same company and also found it to be poorly designed. However I only paid $10 at a second hand shop and it does the job well. Just don't expect quality in the design department.
The way I got mine working is not putting the fan top on perfectly, that somehow makes contact with the rod and turns on. what a POS this thing is! I cant believe it was $140 dollars from Home Depot!
You're joking, right? The styrofoam has to be on the bottom in order to float and push the rod up. With the styrofoam on top, the rod does nothing. Your "smh" suggests that you are not joking, as hard as that is to believe. Now I'm smh'ing :)
No, he's right. it's backwards, not upside down. The rod should face the back of the unit, not the front, and the little 'tie' with the balls on the end is supposed to be twisted together so that it holds the rod in place. This is operator error, not design flaw.
Jessie Donner replied: "Matt Redinius No, the styrofoam needs to be at the bottom of the unit. If it is on top, the water never reaches it. The reason it is styrofoam, it because it floats. This should be obvious just by ..."
"Quick executive summary: I'm going to tell you that this is a TERRIBLE product, with a lot of design flaws but I will still recommend it, and you'll see why."
@@ChristopherEPineda - update: my wife and I ended up buying two of these and we are still laughing on a basically weekly basis about this quote. We use it constantly. Almost as much as big lebowski quotes in daily use around here. We just came back to this video to have a laugh about this quote... 7 years later.
This is obviously a poor design. Even the filter orientation is poor, unlike the Honeywell model HEV685W Top Fill Console Humidifier. The filter their is cylindrical and the filter is orientated vertically, so the 'straws' of the filter is better able to keep it saturated with water and there is far more surface area, because the fan draws the air from its center.
PK I was so frustrated and you answered all of my question. The incompetent Essick company should make you President of their company.

It's got very cheap plastic and just as PKS states, it is not at all intuitive figuring out how to install the wick.
you are right. main / only good feature is really that it holds a lot of water
it looks like you have another humidifier sitting in the background. can you give a review of it too?
Hi Tocimah, That is a simple Vornado humidifier. Works well for a small room but you do have to fill it up a lot.
They should add a pump to the top of the filter so it stays wet
good idea! That will probably improve the humidity output.
@@PKShiu or you can get a swamp cooler lol
Paid 160 for what I thought was an amazing expensive humidifier. Its just plastic with a tiny fan motor on top
It seems alright to me-basic fan and water tub-much ado about nothing I'd say
At least it has rollers!,,🤓

Great, I don't have a filter holder for mine..... It's not going to work!
You did not throw it out with the old filter did you? Oh no.
The way I got mine working is not putting the fan top on perfectly, that somehow makes contact with the rod and turns on. what a POS this thing is! I cant believe it was $140 dollars from Home Depot!
You’ve put the rod/styrofoam backwards! That’s why you’re not hitting that switch. Smh
@@MattRedinius Haha, very funny.
@@jessiedonner2793 your first unedited response was indeed funny

Addendum... the design is fine but your brain needs major upgrades.
