I lived with a dry loo system-all diy and recycled- for about 2 years. Mine was in the house due to a problem with our old loo. So far, the most unsettling part of utilizing humanure for me has been that many people apply it to vegetable gardens, and I couldn’t get comfortable with that idea. But using it to grow biomass sounds like a brilliant idea!
I think there is undo caution about using humanmanure for food growing. At least put it on fruit trees. But I bet it is better than a lot of manures so we are missing out. The idea of pathogens is overblown in my view and stops us from getting the most of our productions.

Not enough carbon and the urine creates the anaerobic bacteria increase with ammonia - and that actually stops the aerobic bacterial composting. Usually a compost pile once out of the toilet - that should have more than enough carbon to happily accept the urine for sure - great point. Still I have noticed sometimes the ammonia smell if there is not enough carbon - so it depends for sure.
Me too. Saves a ton of flush water if you pee into a bucket like I do. Of course it only works if you have a compost heap or garden to dispose of the piddle. Many do not.
This is a beautiful system. Simple and very doable. I love the idea of the hose that takes the fluids to a stream for separation. I would use humanmanure on vegetables if seasoned for two years. I think there is too much unnecessary ado about pathogens and we are missing out on the great nutrients that humanmanure can supply. Kudos for a great design!
Thanks a lot for your comment! I think you are right, applying humanure to the garden in general is ok. However my chicken compost is a much better fertilizer than my humenure compost. That´s why I like this solution! (And it`s 100% safe)
How do you guarantee that no desease will be spread this way - you mentioned something about presence of carbon when there us too much urine, but no specifics, also what do you do with the toilet paper?

I honestly think that the drainage for the liquids is totally unnecessary. Sawdust soaks up a lot of liquids and even in this video that drainage hose does not look like there is anything flowing through it. I may be wrong, but a lot of people use this bucket system without drainage.
Separating the liquid from the solid is a bad idea for the environment, because the only way to stabilize the nitrogen in the urine is the carbon. The urine in contact of air or water will bond with oxygen or hydrogen to become toxic molecules as ammoniac (NH3) or nitrates (NO2 and NO3) . So the best is to fill the bottom of your bucket with a thick layer of absorbing carbon matter to let the nitrogen bond with the carbon to form nutritive and organic molecules as amino acids. This is the most good for the environment which create a better and more balance compost.
@@paulsawczyc5019 I have never tried coal but maybe crumbled into fine particles it would work. There are 2 mandatory criteria to make a good matter organic matter for a composting toilet: the matter has an high absorption capacity and it contains a lot of carbon, that is the case of saw dust.

A warning from the permaculture trainers: If anyone is taking certain medications (the cancer ones are the worst- fluorouracil comes to mind if I remember right) then their toilet compost may be toxic to many garden plants.

A note on medication and especially birth prevention and compost loos: hormones are not easily dealt with through the composting cycle, so certain medications and especially hormone medication such as birth control or menopause hormone replacement therapy will impact both plant and wild life when spread through the compost, read up more about it as I’m no expert. Could mycology, growing fungus in the reed bed chemically convert those pharmaceuticals? I've read about mushrooms/fungus converting poisoned soil into once again clean soil. The process is called mycoremediation.
I plan to use a "similar" system in my motorhome. No more need for a holding tank and the headaches of cleaning it, and transporting water is expensive whereas sawdust is lightweight and available everywhere cheap or free. My next project will be a 3 gallon/12 litre heated shower system .... 🚽✅🚿?
I like things like composting toilets to help grow flowers and whatever else can be done. But what I hate is when environmentalists lecture us about the need to do this kind of thing or take an arrogant tone about it. I'm glad Manuel Angerer did not speak in an arrogant or lecturing tone
Because then I would need a much bigger building and it`s harder to have the toilet free of smell and flies! But you can do that if you know how to do it!

We have an insane amount of flies(both in the bucket and in the composting pile) and I was wondering if you have any tips on that!
Hello there! Yes we had a fly issue at the beginning too. The only thing that helped was to close every gap in the compost toilet building. I put some insect netting onto every gap and made the door close tightly. Since then there is no problem because no flies can enter the toilet :)
Hi, I apologize for my unrequested comment. We use slightly wet, outdoor stored sawdust or leaves. No flies, no insects. Dry sawdust is more pleasant to handle, but doesn't work so well. Have a nice day
If you have flies you have not put enough sawdust in the bucket, the waste needs to be covered, when you empty the bucket it must go into the centre of your compost pile and then closed over and materials must be put on top, I use a compost toilet in South Africa, hot and many flies as a rule. Both my toilet and my compost pile do not attract flies. Read the humanure handbook, the guidelines in the book are a treasure.

Great jobb! Important. Congrats. A bit curious to know how the winters are where you are? The reedbed seems so perfect but where we live it wouldn't be active several months of the year. Do you you need to store the liquids through longer periods of frost? Greets.
Thanks! We do have a few months of winter here in Austria. In our case the compost toilet is used a lot less in winter so that we can easily store the liquids or dilute them with water and spread it along our hedge. The other option beside storing the liquids is to build a kind of polytunnel over the reedbed (you need a bigger reedbed for this) in winter so that the plants do not stop growing during the cold time of the year. But that needs to be tested and you need to have a look into very cold tolerant plants that are suitable for a reedbed!
Nice work. Is there another way to handle the toilet that doesn't require so much interaction with the human waste and unplugging a liquid connection that will seemingly get waste on your hand? Maybe a large tube/slide out the back of the bathroom that fills a bucket with the solid material and also has the drain for the liquid - making the solids easier to remove and carry to compost bin?
Just my two bits worth: you may have (if possible) the compost in the close vicinity of the washroom, and the “bucket” out of the little building itself with a grid on its back. In this way when you want to offload it you may simo,y use a fork or shovel and transfer it directly into the compost space. Not a solution, but just an idea :) cheers
Have you heard of willow sewage treatment? This has become very popular in the countryside where I live. And requires no composting, it just goes straight into a willow plantation and you can cut down the willow on whatever rotation you want in order to make mulch or firewood. And its a normal flushing toilet instead. Granted it is more expensive than your bucket setup ;)
@@manuelangerer-permaculture In Danish it is called "Pilerenseanlæg". What it is, is basically from your toilet it goes into what in danish is called a "Spulebrønd", which is there to give you a place to clean our the pipes. Then it goes to a settlement tank with multiple chambers, and then it goes to a pumping well, where it is pumped from into the final destination, which is the willow plantation. The willow plantation is a closed system which is created by first digging a trench, then putting out a water tight membrane, then filling it in with first haybales, and then you cover it with a mound of dirt and plant willow trees into it.

Nice, i'm planing to build a similar toilette soon. Could you tell me the type and name of your wood chipper and how much it cost round about? It's really painfull to find a good one in medium cost range.
The wood chipper is a Forest Master FMDD6 and costs about 500€. It`s a great machine (6.5hp), however I had to modify the outlet of the chipper so that it doesn`t clog when I put fresh and moist material into the machine.
Awesome system and very easy to use. I'm thinking of building a compost toilet like this in the near future. I don't have a reet bed and the place where i want to build the toilet is not ideal for a reet bed. Is there an alternative for the reet bed or another option to still use the liquids? I'm thinking of building the toilet higher and use the garden hose to fill a small bucket and use the liquids in the compost pile for a quick start of decomposition. Do you have any ideas or alternatives? If i buildthe toilet like this is there a possibility that flies go through the garden hose into the bucket? If so how do i prevent this from happening?
Yes you can use it in your compost piles! You just need to make sure to always have a compost pile where you can direct the liquids to. You could also dilute it with water and spread it along a hedge or other plants you do not eat something from. Flies won`t come into the toilet through the hose because they want to go into the bucket from the top. The bottom is too moist for them! You just have to make sure that no flies can enter the toilet, then you will be fine.

Yes you can use a compost farm to break down the stuff from the bucket! That works even better than hot composting. But you have to keep in mind that these worms are like pets that need to be taken care of too.

Quick question: I am researching doing this on my homestead but it appears that there is some disagreement on the literature as to whether you should separate urine from feces when composting. Some argue that it is dangerous to combine them and it slows down the composting process, while other sources say it's better to combine them because the urine helps it compost at a higher temperature. Thanks in advance for any advice that you can offer!
It depends on how you process the material afterwards. I seperate it so that I don`t need to empty the bucket so often and in that way there will be no bad smells from the bucket. But as said, it depends on what kind of system you use.
Can I use this Washington state? Is there smell from the compost pile? My concert is that I don't want to be caught and fined. If there is no smell, no one will know. I also noticed that your area for the compost is not enclosed on one side. Is this on purpose, for ventilation?
Hey there, sorry for the late reply! You can, there won´t be any smell if you use sawdust a flushing material! Yes, the gap is for ventilation so that the building doesn`t overheat in summer.
Hello, could you tell me why you do not use you human waste compost on the vegetables you grow? And why you prefer the chicken composte to grow food with? I am setting up our new land and want to start a human waste composte, we will also have a few chickens but not this year. Thank you for your videos.
We don`t use our humanure compost on our vegetables because there is a little little chance that it may contain pathogens. There are many people growing food in humanure compost and I guess most of them are fine. It`s up to you how you decide on this, it also depends on how much medication is taken by the people using the toilet, you do not want to have too much of that in your vegetable garden. Chicken compost has no risk of having pathogens to humans in it. It`s also way more fertile! Plants love the poop of birds!

To kill possible human pathogens, hot composting would be the key. However, it is surprisingly difficult to ensure uniform heating of whole compost pile over +55 C. Even when turning the pile. Another possibility could be time - letting pile to stay for year or two before using that compost.

Thank you for your comment! You can use all the mentioned alternertives for flushing the toilet. The bucket gets emptied when it`s full, depends on how much we use the toilet. Regarding flushing: This just means adding sawdust or other stuff. The poop falls directly into the basket, so no need to move it around like in a conventional toilet.
If you need to go in the middle of the night do you still go out or do you some type of chamber pot. The only thing I dislike about this is needing to leave the house in the dark in the nightclothes.
This particular toilet is only for the use when we are in the garden. You can build the same system inside a house too, but you need a small ventilator that draws air from the bin to the outside of the house. In that way you never smell anything from the toilet.
Excellent idea however some will not agree growing food in human waste but that is how God created everything to be. How many times a day must you empty the compost toilet? Having a small place which other plants can you suggest for waste water?

Mein Schilfbeet ist sehr simpel: Ein Kunststoffbehälter ist mit Rollierschotter gefüllt (16/32). Das Wasser aus der Toilette kommt oben ins Beet, an der gegenüberliegenden Seite am Boden des Behälters ist der Auslass. Der Auslassschlauch macht dann eine Schlaufe nach oben und definiert so den Wasserstand des Klärbeckens. Der Schlauch braucht dann an der obersten Stelle der Schlaufe ein kleines Loch, damit kein Siphoneffekt ensteht und das Becken leerpumpt. Bepflanzt ist das Becken mit heimischen Schilfpflanzen, die etwa 2m hoch werden.
why the double composting before going in your garden beds? the first cycle with the toilet outcome and grass clippings compost in one year, it is like mature manure, why do not use that directly in your garden beds?
Initially i got excited seeing the way you seperate urine from feces. But then i got worried. Have you ever tested the urine runoff? Normally urine is sterile but in this setup i doubt it is. And thus you have pathogens just running off in an more or less uncontrolled manner? Correct me when im wrong. Other then this a very nice setup and thinking of doing something similar.

You can also just let the urine stay in the compost. It's a beneficial nutrient. You can read the Humanure Handbook by Joseph C. Jenkins.

everyone is taking medications nowdays and jabs. everyone has toxic stuff in them
why toxic?
Just make sure it comes into contact with soil as soon as possible. Soil can remediate pretty much all toxins.

Why not build the toilet directly over the compost bin so that the bucket and related chores are done away with?

Hi, I apologize for my unrequested comment. We use slightly wet, outdoor stored sawdust or leaves. No flies, no insects. Dry sawdust is more pleasant to handle, but doesn't work so well. Have a nice day
If you have flies you have not put enough sawdust in the bucket, the waste needs to be covered, when you empty the bucket it must go into the centre of your compost pile and then closed over and materials must be put on top, I use a compost toilet in South Africa, hot and many flies as a rule. Both my toilet and my compost pile do not attract flies. Read the humanure handbook, the guidelines in the book are a treasure.

This bucket has a Volume of 25 liters. I guess after about 30-40 uses of the toilet I need to empty it!

Thanks! We do have a few months of winter here in Austria. In our case the compost toilet is used a lot less in winter so that we can easily store the liquids or dilute them with water and spread it along our hedge. The other option beside storing the liquids is to build a kind of polytunnel over the reedbed (you need a bigger reedbed for this) in winter so that the plants do not stop growing during the cold time of the year. But that needs to be tested and you need to have a look into very cold tolerant plants that are suitable for a reedbed!
Actually, collected liquid is a good add-on to a compost pile to get it hot. Especially during cool seasons, when there is no grass clippings..
Or let it stay in the sawdust in the toilet.
Nice work. Is there another way to handle the toilet that doesn't require so much interaction with the human waste and unplugging a liquid connection that will seemingly get waste on your hand?
Maybe a large tube/slide out the back of the bathroom that fills a bucket with the solid material and also has the drain for the liquid - making the solids easier to remove and carry to compost bin?
Yes of course you can set this up the way you mentioned. Fit the system to your needs :)
Just my two bits worth: you may have (if possible) the compost in the close vicinity of the washroom, and the “bucket” out of the little building itself with a grid on its back. In this way when you want to offload it you may simo,y use a fork or shovel and transfer it directly into the compost space. Not a solution, but just an idea :) cheers
Have you heard of willow sewage treatment? This has become very popular in the countryside where I live. And requires no composting, it just goes straight into a willow plantation and you can cut down the willow on whatever rotation you want in order to make mulch or firewood. And its a normal flushing toilet instead. Granted it is more expensive than your bucket setup ;)
I have not heard about that! But it sounds good. I will look into that, there might be a way for me to simplify this process in our garden even more.
@@manuelangerer-permaculture In Danish it is called "Pilerenseanlæg".
What it is, is basically from your toilet it goes into what in danish is called a "Spulebrønd", which is there to give you a place to clean our the pipes. Then it goes to a settlement tank with multiple chambers, and then it goes to a pumping well, where it is pumped from into the final destination, which is the willow plantation. The willow plantation is a closed system which is created by first digging a trench, then putting out a water tight membrane, then filling it in with first haybales, and then you cover it with a mound of dirt and plant willow trees into it.

It's really painfull to find a good one in medium cost range.
The wood chipper is a Forest Master FMDD6 and costs about 500€. It`s a great machine (6.5hp), however I had to modify the outlet of the chipper so that it doesn`t clog when I put fresh and moist material into the machine.

I don't have a reet bed and the place where i want to build the toilet is not ideal for a reet bed.
Is there an alternative for the reet bed or another option to still use the liquids?
I'm thinking of building the toilet higher and use the garden hose to fill a small bucket and use the liquids in the compost pile for a quick start of decomposition.

Yes you can use it in your compost piles! You just need to make sure to always have a compost pile where you can direct the liquids to. You could also dilute it with water and spread it along a hedge or other plants you do not eat something from.
Flies won`t come into the toilet through the hose because they want to go into the bucket from the top. The bottom is too moist for them! You just have to make sure that no flies can enter the toilet, then you will be fine.

I can place a compost pile next to the toilet and direct the liquids to the compost pile or just dilute it for a border/hedge plants liquid feed. I'm making mental notes to use fly screen or something simlar to keep the flies out where there are gaps. Would a worm farm help the breaking down in the composting part of the cycle?
Yes you can use a compost farm to break down the stuff from the bucket! That works even better than hot composting. But you have to keep in mind that these worms are like pets that need to be taken care of too.

Quick question: I am researching doing this on my homestead but it appears that there is some disagreement on the literature as to whether you should separate urine from feces when composting. Some argue that it is dangerous to combine them and it slows down the composting process, while other sources say it's better to combine them because the urine helps it compost at a higher temperature. Thanks in advance for any advice that you can offer!
It depends on how you process the material afterwards. I seperate it so that I don`t need to empty the bucket so often and in that way there will be no bad smells from the bucket. But as said, it depends on what kind of system you use.

Hey there, sorry for the late reply! You can, there won´t be any smell if you use sawdust a flushing material! Yes, the gap is for ventilation so that the building doesn`t overheat in summer.
Hello, could you tell me why you do not use you human waste compost on the vegetables you grow? And why you prefer the chicken composte to grow food with? I am setting up our new land and want to start a human waste composte, we will also have a few chickens but not this year. Thank you for your videos.
We don`t use our humanure compost on our vegetables because there is a little little chance that it may contain pathogens. There are many people growing food in humanure compost and I guess most of them are fine. It`s up to you how you decide on this, it also depends on how much medication is taken by the people using the toilet, you do not want to have too much of that in your vegetable garden. Chicken compost has no risk of having pathogens to humans in it. It`s also way more fertile! Plants love the poop of birds!

To kill possible human pathogens, hot composting would be the key. However, it is surprisingly difficult to ensure uniform heating of whole compost pile over +55 C. Even when turning the pile.
Another possibility could be time - letting pile to stay for year or two before using that compost.

Are there any alternatives to sawdust, cuz it might not be all the time available, can we use shreds/rough powder of dried leaves, twigs, grass powder, soil etc. or something like that, it would be much better... And how often do you empty the bucket twice or once in a week...? As we want the 💩 to be settled down properly and turn almost odourless... And one more thing if you do not flush it with water then how come the poop goes down on its own...?, I didn't get it...🤔 I would love to know all the related things in detail, rather was wondering if you could just do the same in some other video then it would be very helpful to understand the complete procedure... Thank you for your comment! You can use all the mentioned alternertives for flushing the toilet. The bucket gets emptied when it`s full, depends on how much we use the toilet. Regarding flushing: This just means adding sawdust or other stuff. The poop falls directly into the basket, so no need to move it around like in a conventional toilet.
I would imagine one could utilize wood ash too instead of sawdust.

If you need to go in the middle of the night do you still go out or do you some type of chamber pot.
The only thing I dislike about this is needing to leave the house in the dark in the nightclothes.
This particular toilet is only for the use when we are in the garden. You can build the same system inside a house too, but you need a small ventilator that draws air from the bin to the outside of the house. In that way you never smell anything from the toilet.

Excellent idea however some will not agree growing food in human waste but that is how God created everything to be. How many times a day must you empty the compost toilet? Having a small place which other plants can you suggest for waste water?
One or two people might go a week before emptying the bucket.

Hallo Manuel, könntest Du mir bitte den Aufbau deines "Reedbed" / Klärbeet nennen? Ich plane ähnliches und mir gefällt dieses Beet sehr gut. Welche Pflanzen hast Du hierfür verwendet? Freundliche Grüße.
Mein Schilfbeet ist sehr simpel: Ein Kunststoffbehälter ist mit Rollierschotter gefüllt (16/32). Das Wasser aus der Toilette kommt oben ins Beet, an der gegenüberliegenden Seite am Boden des Behälters ist der Auslass. Der Auslassschlauch macht dann eine Schlaufe nach oben und definiert so den Wasserstand des Klärbeckens. Der Schlauch braucht dann an der obersten Stelle der Schlaufe ein kleines Loch, damit kein Siphoneffekt ensteht und das Becken leerpumpt. Bepflanzt ist das Becken mit heimischen Schilfpflanzen, die etwa 2m hoch werden.

why the double composting before going in your garden beds?
the first cycle with the toilet outcome and grass clippings compost in one year, it is like mature manure, why do not use that directly in your garden beds?
The longer you wait, the more certain it will be free of dangerous pathogens.

The toilet paper gets composted as well. Flushing the toilet means adding sawdust into the bucket, to bind nurtients and the smell.

Initially i got excited seeing the way you seperate urine from feces. But then i got worried. Have you ever tested the urine runoff? Normally urine is sterile but in this setup i doubt it is. And thus you have pathogens just running off in an more or less uncontrolled manner? Correct me when im wrong. Other then this a very nice setup and thinking of doing something similar.
The urine gets directed to a reedbed where it gets cleaned. And you are right, without the reedbed it would not be a safe system.
The soil is a filter for pathogens. You could grow hemp there as hemp remediates soil.
