Last year my wife and I checked off a bucket list item…started early morning on South Kaibab and hiked down to Phantom Ranch…Took a 90 minute break in the shade and hiked back up the Bright Angel getting back to south rim a hour after dark..We had headlamps on the last mile or so…We just missed the last shuttle bus by 10 minutes back to visiter center…we were devasted…The temp at Phantom Ranch was 106 and the heat was no joke…We were prepared for this and it was amazing throughout the day how many hikers were unprepared for the heat…We did make it back to visiters center with a ride from a stranger/ great guy!!!!!…Big bucket list check off for us 64 year olds….Next is north rim to south rim ina day💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Good luck on your rim to rim hike! I've gone south to north annually for the past 10 years. I use to hike back but now take the shuttle. It's a great experience!
Loved this video! Sometimes it the simplest, last minute trips that give you the best memories! Great views, sunset, sunrise just amazing!💕 well done guys!
Thank you Kelly and James. That Powell Point sunrise was extraordinarily beautiful. What a wonderful way to take a hiatus from your PCT thru-hike. I’m now a 76 yrs. old widow and your video reminded me of the time my husband and I traveled to the Grand Canyon.
I really think that this direction for your channel is a good one. I like the long format 20 to 30 minute episodes. It increases your view time and really shows how loyal that your followers are to watching your videos all the way through. It would be really cool if you guys just traveled around in your camper van and made an entire series for a whole year where you may be dead three days worth of filming and put it all together into kind of a full length type episode.
Yeah me too ! I’m a retired SF Fire Battalion Chief who thought nothing of climbing ladders and traversing peeked roofs three stories high. Now I’m 76 and I literally have a physical reaction when they are walking on those trails !
Your comment reminds me of some years ago I hiked up to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite NP and it happened that a couple of young ladies from Cali who were on a college break and both quite athletic were hiking it and just so happened to be right by me as they were hiking the last section that is steep before the actual cable climb and I was chatting with the one girl as we scrambled our way up. There she was all confident in her physical ability but what she had failed to realize until she happened to glance back down from where we had climbed as to how steep it was and she had a total mental melt down. Crouched down and was crying and her female friend was trying to console and give her confidence but that was not working, I never saw them again as I am sure they went back down and that would have been some nightmare for that girl who broke down to get back off that section. There was nothing I could do to help them and carried on and went up the cables and that was the mind battle for myself as its quite something going up those cables and then I stood on the diving board they call it at the top looking straight down thousands of feet with no railing. I have my own fear of heights for sure depending on the situation.
Hi Kelly, I'm from Germany. Several years ago I had the pleasure to visit the Grand Canyon too. An amazing scenary, but that is thru for most of the national momuments in the South West, cheers Andreas
Beautiful! Trail candy smile! Once I was treated to it I don't think I could go one day without seein it!Something wrong with Mr Virginia! Thanks for the great trail hikes and observation points Lovely grandfather tribute 5:03
Here are two books you may enjoy reading: 1. Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon by M. Ghiglieri & T. Meyers. 2. The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko.
Great video. The canyon is such a fantastic place. Check out the book "First thru the Canyon" by John Wesley Powell. Very good read about their journey down the river
Love the Grand Canyon....fortunate to have visited it 3 times. Have flown over it several times in a small plane. Every location is a win. You look fully recovered now...that's good.
Every Thanksgiving week when school was out I’d take my daughter to the GC and hike to the bottom and camp at different location in its interior for 4 or 5 days. Our favorite spots were Hermit’s Creek, Indian Garden, Phantom Ranch, and different locations all along the Tonto Platform. We did this for 10 years straight from her age of 8 through 17. It was sweet to hear how this young lady missed her grandpa. I know my daughter will feel the same when I’m gone as it was a tremendous bonding experience.
Kelly and James, I've always been adventurous and always wanted to see the Grand Canyon but just never made it. I've watched movies about it but your video showed more of it and what a visit could be like than anything I've ever seen. Thank you! BTW, John Wesley Powell was an incredible explorer. If you get the chance, read the book about his river journey down the Colorado. geek '90 & '02
So Kelly tell me what campground you stayed at for only 18.00 . We where there last year but stayed outside the park . And where they real bathrooms or pit toilets . Thanks kiddo .
We did a cross country to the Grand Canyon South Rim from PA in March in our van - it was a trip of a lifetime! It was all that we were hoping for and SOOOO much more!
Canyon hiking. Opposite of hiking up a mountain. Hiking up is slow going but the return is quick and easy, 2/3 up 1/3 back down. Canyon hiking, going down easy, then hoof it back up. 1/3 down 2/3 back up. It gets a lot of people in trouble at the Grand Canyon. Documented, read “Over the Edge, deaths in the Grand Canyon.”
First trip to the Canyon was 1978. We did Bright Angel,, since we were young experienced backpackers. The trip down was great but 11 miles back was hard,, all up hill. This is the jaw dropping parks there is. Went to the bottom again 10 years ago with an Indian Tribe. Rafting trip. Unbelievable vacation experience. Planning my next trip out there next Spring and carrying my girlfriend,, a 2004 Harley. Y'all be safe in your travels.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video with us today. I lol when you were taking pictures of you and James and he said: take it of the views.😊🤣🤣🤣.
Kelly and James, I really wish you were able to continue your PCT thru-hike, but then we never would have enjoyed this beautiful and amazing video! Thank you for sharing it with us. Wishing you both wonderful adventures this summer!
Did you see ( Lisa P. Hikes ) she also did the A.T. last year . She works at the Grand Canyon as a mule guide for the park. I’m glad you getting stronger and healthier. I had Covid-19 during Christmas it took a while to recover from it . God bless you and take care.
Its those 3.30 wake ups where you catch the magic hour of watching a sunrise. Those moments feel so magical and feel so good to be alive. Awsome to see one of the Wonders of the world! Glad you guys are taking advantage of God's Glory while your young, So manly people wait too long!
Been to the Grand Canyon! Very beautiful! Took a national park road trip a few years back! Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia are beautiful as well! Happy trails, safe travels! Your lucky to be able to do this! Thanks for taking us along!
3 years ago I hiked the rim trail from the GC village all the way to pima point. That was such an amazing hike. Especially inbetween the various viewpoints because most of the people use the shuttle to the view points and then drive out again. So I almost had the trail to myself. That was amazing...
Been watching your videos for a long time and love the thru hiking stuff but as a park boy myself this is an awesome video. Been down to the bottom of the canyon twice and still love seeing all this. For park nerds seeing the visitor center/museum stuff is so awesome puts me right back there. Good work!
I love this video. The views were amazing. Thank you for your time and efforts to make this video. I look forward to the next one. You and James are an amazing couple making beautiful memories together !
Very nice video and narrative about your visit to the Grand Canyon! Like others have commented, this brings back some of my own memories of vacationing there with family. Love to visit the southwest. God bless!
Great video of what it would be like to visit the Grand Canyon. I have never been but now I would love to see the views in person. I have heard that is really crowded but your trip didn’t seem like there were tons of people around.
Quite the canyon views. Paved bike trails, very nice, hopefully a much smoother ride overall. Thank you for sharing some trails and sights in the area.
Wow you really got some stunning shots! Makes me wanna take another tour of the southwest. Also the AZT is on my bucket list. Are you two considering it?
I was there in January. So interesting to see the place with snow, and now without.

I’ve noticed this with other Chanel’s on random topicz.
I'm glad anyone but me is hiking those insane dropoff trails. I'd have a full-blown panic attack.
Yeah me too ! I’m a retired SF Fire Battalion Chief who thought nothing of climbing ladders and traversing peeked roofs three stories high. Now I’m 76 and I literally have a physical reaction when they are walking on those trails !

Along for the ride...👍🏴
Great episode. I live in AZ. Been to GC a few times and enjoyed the experience from your pov.... Have you experienced Sedona yet? -Brent
And the North Rim is even more beautiful with less people... Head a little further West and take the hike down to Havasu Falls.
Admire y'all hiking places I've always wanted to see !
Planning a trip from the UK watch your video thanks for the great tips
Love the Grand Canyon....fortunate to have visited it 3 times. Have flown over it several times in a small plane. Every location is a win. You look fully recovered now...that's good.
