I work for a Belgrade office of a Swedish company and I am learning a little Swedish for fun (we use English at work, so I do not really need to know Swedish), but I have no plans so far to emigrate anywhere north as I would hate the weather and I would probably feel out of place for the rest of my life.

I am Bosnian that is living in one of the most prosperous cities in Western Germany and I do not fully agree with the picture that is presented in video. First Bosnia is post war and transitional country, it simply can not be compared with developed countries like Germany or Austria since economical gap is way too big.
Yes infrastructure is bad and country is very poor, but you need to put that in context. Bosnian GDP grew 83% in last two decades, unemployment went from 40% to 15%. Salaries are after 30 years reaching prewar level and growing fast, this year 10%... For infrastructure Sarajevo and Zenica got highway bypasses that together cost 500+ million euros- such infrastructure objects were not possible to build there 20 years ago. Needs are so big for modern roads, railways, waste management etc. that it will still take decades to really improve with billions needed to invest, that is reality. Still some business areas are in huge expansion like banking, insurance, IT, tourism and foreign trade...
Even in Germany there are pockets of poverty and depressed regions, it is not everywhere shiny and perfect and that is rule in every country. So bigger context is needed and balanced approach.

Thank you for your insights. I was hoping for this kind of information about Bosnia (and not just because it is more positive) when I searched for it on UA-cam. I have been hoping that the economic and social situation has improved enough to kee Bosnia stable, even as Serbia seems to be having an increase in nationalist activity.
I'm not sure.... 15% unemployment is still high enough to leave many people feeling like they have no purpose or value in Bosnia. I guess we can keep hoping for improvement.

After 10 years in germany i'm moving back to Albania. After everyday after work , going home i started asking myself 'for what?' . For what did i moved to Germany ? ( since i wasent hungry or homless in albania) . For what i'm making this sacrifice ( since i left family and friends behind ) and to be honest there was no satisfiying answer . It took me two years to prepare the ground , find a relativly normal job , an apartment and readiying the conditions . My contribution is that countries and politics are made by people and it takes a long time for them to change , longer than lifetimes and thats why each one of us should try to contribute in whatever way we can without being dissapointed when those changes arent immidietly visible , ''since Rome wasnt build in a day'' .
Keep the good work, Friend . The best is yet to come for ballkan. There still are a lot of postive attributes to avarege ballkan community.

We also have a lot of small villages that dont have paved but cobblestone roads, or just dirt paths... many of those villages have crumbling buildings build before the first world war.
What you tell of in the video are the big cities and their rich suburbs and industrial areas, but not the complete picture. And that mostly in the west or the south. Like Bavaria... Go north and east, the poorer the people get. And you can see that from the outside of their houses...

One thing you have to realize about this video is that he flat out refuses to mention the negative effects from the rule of the Soviet Union, and how they messed the balkans, russia, and eastern germany. The Communist Soviet Union is what fucked up the balkans with its inhumane rule up until the 90's, and they're the ones who are responsible for eastern germany being still shitty. And of course people don't want to stay in such fucked up wastelands anymore if they can use their skills elsewhere.
You have to realize that the soviet union ended December 26, 1991, that was NOT long ago. And a lot of the governments of countries that were formerly enslaved by the soviet union are still up to this day pro soviet rule. Which is why they were sucked dry of all their resources and money and not given any food, money, or even power to make decisions all this time. No wonder the balkans, east germany, and everything else that was previously under soviet rule is now still decayed and trashed (including vast areas of russia itself).
The western countries of europe wanted to have a stable economical relationship with the balkans and all those countries, but literally couldn't, because the soviet union was controlling them until the 90's. If western countries tried interfering they would have been in danger of triggering war with the soviet union. So all things considered the western countries that are painted in such a bad picture in this video didn't even do so much harm, they tried helping, but they can't baby sit every country themselves after the soviet union leaves. And like I said, many of the governments still in place in the balkans still hang onto pro soviet values, so there's only so much the west can do politically to help.

The war in Croatia is portrayed as if it began with the "expulsion" of Krajina Serbs in 1995, and there is no mention of how the war began in 1991 with the expulsion of cca 200,000 Croats and non-Serbs from Krajina and even more astonishingly no mention of how Republika Srpska and Banja Luka became so ethnically clean - by expelling and murdering 700,000 Bosniaks and 200,000 Croats. It is extremely ironic how the author makes commentary on what went wrong and that Croatia is marked "delusional" on the map in the thumbnail, when he is engaged in classic greater-Serbian, chetnik, unitary Yugoslav, "the Serbs were just defending themselves" or whatever other brand of Serbian chauvinism the author belongs to. Of course, coated in greavance for Serbs (and Serbs only, nobody else from former Yugoslavia) and faux objective analysis. Your video is a fine description of the situation of Balkans. In Greece it's more or less the same. Where I disagree is your analysis on the causes of that dissolution. Underneath the high Marxist analysis lies the implication that it's someone else's fault. Bad colonialists expoiting poor people getting their wealth traumatizing them, leading them into the current state of disintegration. The truth is people was doing that to each other all the time. The critique of exploitation you are presenting is a cultural product of those countries. We will never get over the anger , the guilt and the helplessness unless we take responsibility. The worst thing about that Bosnian constitution is that everyone involved in putting it together KNEW that it was not going to be forever. It was a desperate attempt to put a stop to the violence and give Bosnians some peace and stability while they can grow an economy and perhaps find other things to focus on besides slaughtering each other.
Everyone knows that a country with three entities and everything done in triplicate, for a nation divided into three parts (that are actually two entities) is a temporary transitional thing...
But in order to move on to a better, long-term arrangements, Croatia and Serbia both need to have also decided to move on. Croatia has been doing that. Serbia absolutely has NOT. Until they do, Bosnia will always be on the verge of snapping back into conflict and violence. It is being held hostage by Serbian nationalist anger - some of which is being stoked, sadly, by Russian propaganda.

Both became nation states very late, and have had many ethnic conflicts to deal with.

However, such a mindset may indeed explain why the situation does not change. If you always blame others and anonymous forces, then you can just lay back and do nothing to improve the situation.
The reality is that small countries in Europe have better opportunities than ever before, including those that previously were poor and under foreign influence, such as Ireland or the Baltic states. However, the journey has to start in the minds of the people. If they prefer to blame others with big words such as "colonialism", "imperialism", and "exploitation", they will achieve nothing.

Italy in the North has a better infrastructure and is very strong , probably in 10 years Romania will not have this industry and infrastructure , but I am 100% our loans will be like in North Spain or North Italy . Now the difference is from the minimum salary wich in Romania is 400 euros netto and in Spain and Italy 800 . We are ourselves to blame considerably in the whole situation. We do not want the country to work since that would mean following rules and holding people accountable for their actions. Since those in power are determined to stay there, they constantly inflate interethnic tensions to distract the population from the issues regarding their living standard, and blackmail them existentially in order for them to keep quiet if they don't want to lose their jobs and ruin their own existence. In this way, there's no way for corruption to disappear since it's the precondition for a decent living. Subscribing to the nationalist paranoia keeps you close to the fire, provided you give up any moral criteria in exchange for profit. Others eventually move out and then society is reduced to a group of oligarchs using the country as their personal ATM. It's appalingly simple and it works perfectly.

As a diasporan myself, I've heard countless times the citing of external forces like the West, Capitalism, Imperialism etc. as THE reasons for why X place collapsed or went through turmoil.
In my opinion, such arguments are usually done to blame others so that a society doesn't have to look at itself. I'm from a poor country in Southeast Asia, where people blame anything from China, the USA, to even Human Rights groups from the EU for the problems we face. Similarly too, we have people jump to using grandiose, world-encompassing notions of Capitalism, Imperialism, Communism, Islamism etc. to blame, but no one bothers to ask why we as a people have tolerated such inept leadership for decades - even centuries. God forbid anyone blames the country itself or the society's way of thinking for those problems.
I noticed in this video you make mention of a variety of said external forces and ideologies that collapsed Yugo and post-Yugo states, but hardly anything of the Bosnian Serb and nationalist Serbian leadership which in my opinion is much more grounded in why things happened the way they did than any grandiose, fundamental ideological argument which serves more to fluff up and obfuscate the debate. There is a whole microcasm of agency within Ex-Yugo itself that you have left out. The West has SOME blame for sure, but does it really have more responsibility than the decisions of local leadership? Will pitting oneself against the West, Capitalism or whatnot tackle the core of the problem or just make a populist public feel good without solving much? If NATO and the West did not get involved would that change everything as if nothing bad would've happened?

One can make a good arguement for either, since the wall wouldn't collapse to the wind if it was in a better state, nor would it if there was no wind (or similar force) to knock it down. A solution could adress either factor, or a combination of both.
A note on this case in particular: Solutions to problems of this scale and complexity are never simple. "If only we do X we will turn this nation into a utopia" is proven to be more destructive than the status quo in many cases. For Bosnia, this could include adressing internal and external hostilities, as well as the corruption, as well as its economic makeup, as well as whatever else there is that needs to be adressed.

    About the video itself
First of context, i'm French born and living in France, a western European country.
Plus french people are notorious chauvinist, trying to always put France at the top, some English words are French for a reason (cuisine, bureaucracy...)
Anyway, now that i exposed my potential biases, i can state my opinion and reasoning.
First, we can agree that the situation in the Balkan as a whole (Hungary can be included as well) is disastrous. Where i don't agree is the main cause. For me, the main cause isn't capitalism. While it plays a role, an huge one in truth, i believe capitalism to be the enabler of the problem, the thing that amplified it to the extent of today. Poland is today a thriving country, while being part of the Soviet block thirty years ago (33 but who cares about the exact number). Something happen there, and didn't in the Balkan, or vice versa.
An analogy i would like to make is Spain and Greece, both, in the cold war, were under dictatorships, but when those ended, they joined the EU, today Spain has became part of the west again, while Greece is chaos. For me the cause of that is corruption, how wealthy people can bypass thier way out of trouble, and use said money to influence politics to gain more power. Crackdown on corruption happened in spain, and while it's still a problem, it's not as much of a problem as i Greece.
I see the same in the rest of the Balkans, adding an huge war to the mix in ex Yugoslavia.
I see those lands as a post civil war Spain with no strong man to stabilize it, with western dumbasses who didn't understand the region that came and try to install democraty in the worst way.
While i get the idea that we can't fix the Balkans by just fixing small problems and that the global market need changes to prevent it from having the same consequences on other nations, i believe corruption should be tackled first.

I mean I have friends from Spain who describe living there isn't exactly great right now especially now with the extremely high unemployment rate and Poland is just managing to stay afloat due to the massive sums of EU funds they receive each year. Corruption is the issue but it's not as simply as firing a few corrupt individuals or passing a few anti-corruption laws, the problem is more endemic and ingrained into society. I think the issue is with the lack of trust in the government where the people are more loyal to their local town or institution than anything else which in turn incentives politicians to look after their own local adminstration and personal wealth which leads to a disfunctional government. Greece for example loses billions of euros in potential tax each year due to many small business simply just refusing to report their earnings-- money that could've went into solving their debt crisis. Whereas countries with people who have very high trust in their government like denmark or the netherlands tend to do exceptionally better. Though I know this isn't the case everywhere, there is just a strong correlation.

Here in Latin America I can relate so much to this video. Not just the poor roads that have huge holes and not just the abandoned buildings, but also that feeling of "nothing can be done" or "it's the way it is" and it's truly frustrating to see what decades of corruption, inflation, drug trafficking and violence and in short poor management has done to countries that had so much potential. Argentina was one of the most powerful economies by the end of the 1800s now it has many problems with inflation. Colombia, Mexico and much of Central America is filled with gang violence. Venezuela sits upon the largest oil reserve but millions are fleeing in exodus to other lands and we view the USA as a type of utopia even though we all know that the USA is far from being perfect.

The issue in the region is mass corruption, and always has been.

    1. The selective choosing of vibrant and beautiful videos of parts of German countryside in contrast to dreary neighborhoods in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia.
    2. A pretty one-sided explanation of the war. It wasn't just Croatia who did terrible things. (and the event you mentioned is a day of national pride because that is when the nation managed to fend off the invader, not so much as "that is when they committed cleansing"). All others (Slovenia and Macedonia not withstanding) played some role in these acts as well, and most rational people living in the region rightly condemn these acts.

It is an interesting video. I think anyone from the Balkans will tell you that its obvious many of the terrible major events were obviously influenced to some degree by foreign powers for the purposes of imperialism. But what no one can agree on is which powers did what, and how much did they contribute. Bosnia has one of the highest conspiracy theory believing populations in the world. It underlies all politics in the nation, all bad politicians and ideas have supporters defending them by saying "At least they're the only one fighting x nation". I think you considered one perspective very deeply, but the larger picture is more complicated. I don't know if you suggested socialism as a solution or as a joke, but it would require the ultimate amount of unity, while in the same video you in detail cover the fears that divide the country so much.
One counterargument to your video is that the system in Bosnia right now is not at all economically favourable for foreigners. The logistics are a nightmare due to poor roads, extreme border taxes and workers who can drive across the border... often just don't come back. The bureaucracy is abysmal, I have seen hospitals in Banja Luka without any sort of filing system who often kill patients because they lost or never had the files. And as everyone knows the corruption is extremely high. Foreign investment into Bosnia is extremely low for a European nation due to it being an extremely high risk for capital. In the Banana Wars for instance, global capitalism is the undisputed cause due to the American fruit companies directly acquiring cheap land, lucrative supply chains and political favour in both Latin America and the US. If this situation is a similar occurrence of predatory global capitalism, what is your explanation for their lack of objectives achieved?

What they achieve is called “the falling rate of profit” and it is an issue with all capitalist economic systems, and not just the systems of cheap labor economies. Essentially, the single owners of companies are investing in too many things besides their own business and often when they do invest in their business they’re making mistakes that a democratic workplace would prob fire them for. Tito gave the people true power by giving the workers control of the means of production, but 1 good leader are followed by 200 bad ones. The people need to realize that they do not have to give their value surplus to anyone and that this is such an independence that they could even die for this right.

Theres always something to improve. But looking at large parts of lesser developed countries, and talking with people outside the own „bubble“ puts into perspective how good and fortunate one is by having been born here.

The main reason for East Germany's economic deprivation is because the government sold off once state-owned businesses en masse for extremely cheap prices leading after the reunification. This lead in turn to those business being either swallowed up into west germanies companies or entirely destroyed.
East Germany lost most of its industry in the process leaving a huge chunk of the populace without work and due to a lack of recognition for east german degrees in turn lead to many of these unemployed people either finding work in low-grade temporary jobs or none at all.
It also didn't help the mentality changed in its entirety. For a time all east german things were shunned and any and all achievements of the socialist system (completely free healthcare, free childcare services, high quota of working women, nonexistent unemployment, dirt cheap housing and structurally much more modern education system which later got adopted by the Finns). Whereas once workers and their daily toil was praised suddenly academic excellence and the generation of profit was at the forefront.
This all was coupled with a lack of comprehensive reexamination of World War 2 and the Nazis. While initial punishments were much harsher than in the West (all journalists and teachers got jailed for a time) the lack of free speech and assembly didn't allow for movements such as the 68er Movements in which the new generation essentially questioned their parents seeming "sorry-not-sorry" attitude toward their past.
The end result is a heavily dissatisfied populace that feels like its ruled by people far removed from its needs and becomes much more susceptible to the promises of right-winged ideologues and extremists, most prominently the AFD.
While Central Planning was problematic as the heavy centralization of East Germany and focus on East Berlin drowned out the voices of those on lower levels of government (after all, how is an bureaucrat in East Berlin ever supposed to know what a citizen in Lusatia needs when their reports got lost in the byzantine mess of a system?) it is not fully or even directly responsible for the economic deprivation modern EG faces.
Hell, one could even make the argument that Central Planning helped as with it East Germany, previously a bread basket, became the industrial powerhouse of the Eastern Bloc in the decades after the war.
Hope this wasn't too long and gave you a better look at my regions situation.

A bit hypocritical from you to blame it all on capitalist forces, such as USA, UK, Germany and the rest, but then still deciding to live in one of those countries, if you ask me.
Yes, Balkan areas were under different rulers throughout the history, but even after the Yugoslav wars, most of the countries do not seem to progress. Rampant corruption, nepotism and proper plans for economy growth and actual sense of betterment in general of each respective country are the main reasons, and these countries can only blame themselves right now. Soon more and more people will leave - this is evident for Croatia where are I am from, since we are in EU and people have more choices, but I can only imagine how many people would leave BiH and Serbia if one day they also join EU. The only country that has a different mentality than the rest of Balkan countries is Slovenia, I would dare to say, their population is steadily rising and the standard is much higher than the rest.
What I hate about this the most is the squandered potential this whole Balkan region had, if only the mentality of the people in charge was different - not as greedy and exploitative as it is now. Worse off, I don't see it will ever change.

I'm from the ex-USSR state of Latvia but I am not socialist or communist in any way and i agree that most successful are those Eastern European countries which are closer to the West, like Estonia (although seemingly in periphery, but very close to FInland), Czechia (close to Germany etc.), already mentioned Slovenia. But when I drive through my region I also observe differences in how people behave. How while we in Latvia sometimes tend to drive like insane on public roads, Estonians really follow the traffic rules. They are bigger believers in rule of law. How we have allowed local oligarchs to take over at least significant part of our media, Estonians have managed not to do that.
Imperialism of rich countries is one thing, but somebody signed off on that privatization papers after communist era and they were locals, not Western imperialists. Somebody signs off on bad quality road building and again they are not Western imperialists. Somebody buries a public transport of running a train line through affluent suburb so that the rich would have less noise, but which degrades the lives of poor people relying on public transport. And again they are not Western imperialists, they are local guys and gals. It has a lot to do with the ''quality'' of local population too. Population in general, not just politicians. And it's not only just ''oh they are undereducated, so they do not know better, if they had better education, economy would boom'', because you can put a government full of people with Oxford degrees and impeccable English and the result is still bad, because... perhaps your rich elite hates your country's poor people and in their arrogance they continue to pass laws that only improve the lives of the rich elite and pump money to their families, not all society. And why are they like that? Because in Soviet times they just owned a horse and a cart and now they are 1st generation rich and want to steal as much as they can, so their kids would never experience something like that. I knew a guy who was complaining about corruption in the country and bad politicians while always hiring his relatives for his local municipality jobs... so much for ''I hate corruption''.
I don't think that we need socialism/communism for quality changes in our countries. What we need is people who do not hate their compatriots but want to work for society's benefit, not just to line their own/family pockets. Also, we need people who understand how economy works as often we also get socialists/communists with maybe good intentions but whose answer to people leaving the country is to close borders and whose answer to ''Western capitalist bad'' is to nationalize all foreign companies in the country or pass laws that make it difficult for foreign investments in the country. And that is not a solution too. Foreign investment is a good thing, but it needs to be overseen and used for the benefit of the country. But it's so bloody difficult to get this all in one package - smart, but also emotionally smart and patriotic people who love their compatriots, all of them, economically smart people, people with vision of what our country wants to be, and we do not need just 1 or 10 of such people but in all levels of bureaucracy... And if we are a democratic country, we need even more of them, as nothing is dictated from the very top, we need such people in all municipalities etc. That is why there are few countries that have successfully gotten rich from nothing and those that were kind of successful, most in Asia like Taiwan or Korea, their main formative growth was during dictatorship period when a team of such bright people could basically just order people below to adhere to such standards. Seems to me it is harder to do that in a democracy IMHO, although for long term success democracy is much more preferred.

They who seek to place the blame for their failings on others, are doomed to never recognise them. Blaming western Europe for the Balkan's situation fails to recognise the actual reasons for their current situation lying with themselves. Bringing up the argument that the Balkan was somehow robbed of it's prosperity by "imperialism" is at best a misunderstanding of what that word actually means. You say the Austro-Hungarian Empire didn't build independent industries there, so what? Why would you build independent industries on parts of your own territory? That isn't just inefficient, it would cause disunity in your own nation by artificially dividing it's internal market.
You claim that prosperity is related to prximity to the industrial center and so it is, but this is just a fact of life, no malicious force at work, you don't ship your goods half way across the country to have them assembled there for the same price as next door. Similarly, educated people tend to congregate where other educated people are present, so those areas will naturally be wealthier.
You begrudge western Europe its headstart in industrialisation and call it exploitation when western European wares are sold to less industrialised societies, because what? Because they're better quality or cheaper than local stuff and thus the locals can't compete? That's just like begrudging a smart person their success because they were born smarter than you or an old couple their home, because they were born earlier than you and had time build it.
The Balkan's problem in the modern time is and always was the corruption and ethnic hatred present there. Societies grow poor from corruption, not the other way around. You might notice that those nations that are doing well are also the ones with the least corruption that provide an incentive for industry and productivity. And to then go and claim that the genocides and nationalism of the Balkan is somehow a "bourgeois" invention and not pervasive thoughout the entirety of the local societies *especially* the lower classes, is just outright false.
Let's also not forget that the 70 year long Serbian occupation, because that is what "Yugoslavia" truly was, also didn't help that aspect of society either.

American here, posting at 3 AM for some reason. Gosh I must hate myself.
Even here we face similar trends, as one goes further and further from the urban cores. Most moderately-sized cities are well-kept and great places to live, if say there are 100k or more residents in the direct vicinity of a major city, wealth flowing in from all directions thanks to a large number of trained professionals.
However, the further and further you go from these areas the houses become increasingly dilapidated, with falling visibly decaying planks and missing stairs being the norm. City centers are relegated to the decaying strip mall if anything at all, with perhaps a seemingly shady alcohol establishment and a strong smell of cigarette smoke, and the Walmart with more parking slots than people in the town it serves. And they're surprisingly close to the functional towns of the first part, perhaps only a few dozen kilometers away.
But trust me, it gets even worse than that, as some towns are so unprofitable that they don't even have that. Their main employers have left long ago, and now they are left with nothing but an astronomical unemployment rate. Well, and perhaps a median annual income of less than 17,000 dollars (and this is the United States we're talking about, so living costs are higher.)
Now, about the roads. The roads are well-maintained here, but only because of grants from state governments essentially mandating cities to build more and more infrastructure, more than is profitable or they can maintain. This results in high-quality infrastructure and regular jobs, but there is a flip side. Unable to pay for repairs, towns all over the country fall for bankruptcy.

Most prospered while family that stayed behind endured the horrors of war, various occupations, and stultifying isolation for decades behind the Iron Curtain. But then everything changed in the 1990s, and it was a hard transition but many family members in Europe eventually prospered (yes, even in Ukraine). Meanwhile, some regions where my family lived in the West (the Rust Belt) started to stagnate and decline and people moved to more economically dynamic cities on the coasts. Every continent has metropolitan centers but one thing I observed is successful regional cities have clever elites who can somehow leverage local advantages in the face of implacable global economic forces and create opportunities. No easy task. And yes, history is fickle...and cruel.

This is my first youtube comment ever, mostly because I studied development economics and there are a lot of questionable assertions in the latter half of the video. I will try to keep this short, but if you read some works with empirical academic backing, like "Why nations fail", you will see that nations do not fail because they are being exploited by capitalist neighbors. There are plenty nations that started as backwaters that were arguably being exploited, like Japan or South Korea, but also more recently nations like Poland or Botswana. These all are thriving now. There are a lot of reasons why nations fail, but in the case of the Balkans, it is obvious: The occupations and exploitation by the Ottomans drained people's trust in civil institutions, or the idea of having a nation state that encompasses people of more than just one clearly defined cultural background. Other forms of non-democratic regimes followed which were hardly any better. There is a vicious circle of corruption and low trust. People do not realize how important this is. Look up Poland A and Poland B. Poland A consists of areas administrated by German speaking countries way in the past, and governance there is still more efficient, with people also voting in a way that reflects that. Turkey as well as Italy and recently Eastern Europe built up to a large degree by expats working in Europe and transferring money into Turkey, so this actually seems like a good strategy, unless you country absolutely needs your skills.

Japan being exploited, when? Anyway, "why nations fail", I think, doesn't have a complete argument when it comes to development. Please read through the history of the 1st Austrian Republic (1918/1919 - 1933) + the Austrofascist Ständestaat (1933/1934 - 1938) and you will notice that Austria was extremely poor at that time and the state was a complete banana state , where the political parties fought each other in the villages and towns (+ a 6 day civil war in February 1934) while much of the population was starving! Then came the self-elimination of parliament in 1933, which brought the Austrofascist regime to power, and finally, in 1938, the connection to the Nazi regime, where all political opponents were put in concentration camps and executed (+ the leaders of the Austrofascist regime, themselves from 1933/1934 - 1938 put their political opponents in concentration camps (with the difference that the Austrofascist concentration camps did not gas prisoners) and also executed them too! Only through the peaceful cooperation of the parties in the 2nd Republic (the leaders of the parties had sat together in concentration camps realizing it was a mistake not to work together with the other parties so they swore they would work together in the 2nd republic to make the 2nd republic a success story) + of course by the Marshall Plan and the 12-year term of office of the sozialdemocratic Chancellor Bruno Kreisky (1970 - 1982), Austria was able to leave the status of a poor banana republic behind and join the rich countries of the world! That's why your statement is not correct, that Austria was always a rich country, this situation only became so when the catastrophic time from 1918 - 1955 was over!

At some point poor countries will no longer hide their misery behind “colonialism” blame card. Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia are much better economically than Thailand - but Thailand was the only South-East Asian country that was never colonized. Liberia and Ethiopia were least affected from colonialism, but they are far from being the most prosperous in Africa. Rwanda and Botswana are examples of post-colonial countries that went past the “you colonized us!” Blaming game and started fixing their country.
The real question here is, is your generation THE ONE that wants to fix your country? Successful people look for opportunities, miserable people look for excuses.

    • @FOLIPE
      @FOLIPE 2 роки тому

And yet being colonized matters, as does having a shitty political system. It's just that colonialism makes it much more likely your country will have a shitty political and economic system as colonies are purpose-built for that. You had to hand-pick examples to disprove that point, but truth is clear: the average income of post-colonial societies is much lower than that of post-colonizer societies.

    • @RomanLavandos

@@FOLIPE "being colonized matters" - true, but this is no excuse for poverty. Every country in America was colonial, but "English America" is better than Latin America. Curacao, Bermuda, and French Guyana (aka still colonies) are actually the richest places in America. To add to Africa and SEA examples, China and Japan were the only "non-colonized" in East Asia, yet the difference between these countries is huge. Taiwan and both Koreas were colonies most of the time in that region, 2/3 of those countries are rich and prosperous. In Scandinavia, Iceland and Norway were mostly colonies of Sweden or Denmark, yet they are richer and better than Sweden and Denmark. The economy of Ireland is in better shape than the UK - a former colonizer of Ireland. Also, Hungary lives worse than Slovenia, Croatia, Czechia, and Slovakia, but Hungary was one of the monarchies within the Austro-Hungarian empire, so they should've lived better than the subjects of the empire. Iran and Saudi Arabia were the only non-colonized countries in the Middle East, but Oman, UAE, Qatar, Jordan, and Bahrain have better economies.
Actually, there's not a single region that statistically proves that "colonialism gave poverty", and one continent proves quite the opposite of that statement.

I like your videos, however here there are many historical inaccuracies in this one. Slavonia and Oluja, time and place are completely different. Oluja did not happen in Slavonia, it was further southwest. You cannot really talk about Serb abandoned villages and Oluja on the way to Bosnia and Herzegovina when traveling via Slavonia. Those are complexity different things. Yes there are some Serb villages that are abandoned in Slavonia, but those are mainly not on your way to Bosnia and Herzegovina or have anything to do with Oluja. Serb occupied territory in western Slavonia were liberated in various operations from 1991-1995 such as Otkos 10, Orkan-91, Papuk-91 and Bljesak. Furthermore, in those areas Serb population was not expelled, they mostly left the area with the military push backs. In my village Serb paramilitary committed horrible massacre of ethnic Croat civilians when they were leaving the area, even some Serbs that were not willing to leave with them. So yeah, try to be more factually correct. You are sticking to Oluja as it is the only thing that ever happened in the early 90 during the war, when in actuality it has nothing to do with the area you are talking about.

This video is pro communist propaganda, that's why he ended the video with a motivational quote from Karl Marx, the one who wrote the communist manifesto.

Most people earn under 1000 euros a month if they're lucky, while German tourists spend 3000 a week on accomodation and all the nice things our country has to offer. Don't get me wrong, tourism money is nice to make for those who have an extra house from the Communist era- but few see the benefit nationally, because Germans only go to select areas of the country (like Lake Balaton). Is our corrupt, half-despotic political system worth living in for the chance to make tourist money? No, so many in recent years have chosen to emigrte and use their former family home as a place to gather around Christmas when tourists are back in the imperial Western core.

from response to another comment: imperialism is certainly a factor, but ethnonationalism and corruption could have been at least mentioned to give this video more depth. not only politicians, but a significant amount of the population, especially christian population, the pseudoserbs and pseudocroats, have been poisoned with ethnonationalism. you don't need any help from western forces when half of the population has separatist tendencies and calls neighboring countries their homeland-either out of sheer ignorance and brainwashing or unconscious islamophobia which makes them eager to adopt identities which would rid them of any association with islam. imperialism also plays a role here though, as it has greatly influenced perceptions of christianity and islam.
the significant role of religion in shaping separate identities which then clash on such a small territory is often overlooked. the most effective way to get identical people with even identical language to perceive each other as separate. this applies to balkan people in general, but is especially unfortunate in countries like b&h and montenegro, which have the most potential to develop healthy citizenship-based nationalisms and as such serve as some ideological beacons of hope in the balkans. but this potential has its other end of the extreme where the continuous exploitation of multiple identities results in more conflict, which seems closer to reality and which prevents many of us from deciding to stay here. if it comes to that point, it won't be the west's fault, it will be the fault of our local leeches whose minds are perverted enough to covet ethnonationalism and fascistic ideas after everything that happened in the 20th century.

I find your analysis about ethno- nationalism and identity in general to be very poor. You never address why people purport to an identity or give a nuance take on it. Ethnic or cultural identity and ethno-nationalism is the reason most colonial nations are independent and a reason why some are very successful as well or atleast have a booming economy. Its simply human nature that people will cling on to an identity and naturally also will want to compete against other Identity groups. Balkans didn't just hate each other simply because they belonged to a different identity( i stress the word simply). There's tons of factors that came into play. One of them the history and dispute over independent and United Yugoslavia. You can't change human psychology and the alternative isn't much better(I can give you examples if you want). Plus united Yugoslavia was hell and things are much better in independent Yugoslavia nations than they were back then in terms of economic growth and standard of living. Did ethno-nationalism go too far. Yes. But can people live without it and is it the worst thing ever? There's no evidence to make a definitive claim.

yes, many powerful countries were formed through ethnonationalism. in that sense ethnonationalism at least had pragmatic value even if you disagree with it morally. but in the 21st century, with long-established sovereign countries, among which there are many true or quasi-multiethnic ones, ethnonationalism is not only barbaric and delusional, it is also the complete opposite of pragmatic.
'human nature' is constantly evolving, that's how we got out of caves and eventually started criticizing tribalism. i made no claims about yugoslavia. i'm also not sure if you're conflating ethnonationalism with nationalism-for me there's an important distinction between the two and i'm not opposed to moderate, citizenship-based nationalism, which is actually what bosnia needs more of

India did suffer from stagnation for decades under poor leadership, but with more decisive leadership in power that is in touch with the spirit of the nation, it's making progress in leaps and bounds. You have to expect countries to pursue their own interests, no foreign nation is going to fix your problems unless they're charging a hefty price to do so. Operation "Storm" was also an operation to liberate Croatian occupied territories from Great Serbian aggression and appropriation. Croatia was internationally recognized in 1992, which gave it the legitimacy to defend its territory from terrorists. Regarding "ethnic cleansing", the Serbs expelled about half a million Croats and about 250,000 Bosniaks, and the total number is estimated at one million because not all of them were registered. The biggest crime after the Second World War was committed in Srebrenica, where the Serbs killed slightly more than 8,000 unarmed men, women and children.
