In the first place, if Arizona can lock up California shoplifters, more power to them. We've got a lot to spare over here. Second, blaming Gascon isn't going far enough. The whole system is rotten, not just Gascon. Judges let criminals out of prison even when they're due to be sentenced to prison for serious crimes; we had a guy get this break from a judge not once but twice; the second time he murdered a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy. The judge won't get a 3rd opportunity to let the guy go; the cop's coworkers filled the guy in pretty thoroughly. But in addition to that, even if the criminal is caught, even if Gascon or whoever decides to prosecute, even if the judge sentences them to years incarceration, they can only be sent to County Jail unless the crime is "violent". If they're sent to County Jail, well all of those (pretty much every one in the state) are under Federal Court order to release prisoners to reduce overcrowding; the result is people get sent to prison for years but are out typically in weeks. Yeah, we're screwed. Pretty much everyone here can figure out it's a problem. The difficulty is that no Democrat will actually follow through on the "criminals should be in prison" idea, and of course the Republican "MAGA extremists" can't be voted into office regardless.
