its not an uncommon thing in the show. 3 or so spongebob episodes also referenced Sunset Boulevard from the 1950s. the "im ready for my close up quote" is probably the most famous one

I'm usually not too happy about them taking episodes off the air (seriously, they never should have removed "Mid-Life Crustacean"), but I think it was a good call with "Are You Happy Now." That episode was disturbing, miserable to watch, and not at all funny.

Basicly spongebob asks sqidward if he has a happiest memory but he doesnt which makes squiward fall in depression to the point that there is a joke about suicide(no joke you look this up) after that spongebob takes squidward to the krusty krab where he had organized a party for squidward tho no one came so spongebob made a bunch of copies of himself which makes squidward go insane pulling a chainsaw out of nowhere destroying everything and ending the episode with squidward yelling''This is my happiest memory''.Seasons 5-8 were weird man.

Only episode that actually creeped me out as a kid is that Atlantis SquarePantis special specifically the live actions segments with patchy the pirate. Him hallucinating and seeing David J. Steinberg cosplaying as a mini SpongeBob as well as the three creepy alien puppets at the end. It was so random and looked like a cursed skit out of context 😭
That’s the same one that creeped me out too, I hated the aliens so much I had nightmares about em a few times 😭

I’d also like to mention that there’s a Spongebob horror fan game that serves as an unofficial sequel to the episode. It’s called Around the Clock at Bikini Bottom by Dave Microwave Games, released in 2021.

The Time Travel episodes scared TF out of me as a kid. I forgot what was so spooky but the vibe and environment where so immersive.
The environments were just so creepy, lonely, uncanny and sterile. And then in the final part where Squidward gets stuck in the white void is just straight up existential dread as squid gets trapped in a place outside reality.
that episode where squidward gets concrete poured on him and is named smelly was equally disturbing. a sapient being like Squidward was unexpectedly trapped in a concrete shell, unable to plea for help and was forced into assuming a entirely new identity away from society. like imagine the void regarding his social life when his neighbors eventually find out he's missing, his boss starts not seeing him at work, his mail piles up, etc. if his house doesn't slowly rot away, someone buys it and replaces every living remnant of his past life with their own, and the missing individual is no longer a concern. scary ass shit

This episode was so creepy and disturbing that it inspired a horror game called “Around the Clock in Bikini Bottom”. While I do recommend checking it out and playing it for yourself I’d say prepare yourself
I remember watching this as a kid but not thinking too much of it. Now in retrospect, this episode was very creepy.
You ain't the only one doc, I also didn't think much of that episode until I was reminded of it thanks to this video. Imagen a full on horror movie based on those specific aliens, a nightmare mania will plague the nation for sure.

Dave Microwave made a Spongebob horror fangame based on this episode. It is called “Around The Clock At Bikini Bottom”. It is probably the best fanmade Spongebob horror game on the internet. It’s kinda unfortunate that not a lot of gamers who play indie horror games are not aware of the existence of this masterpiece. As well as some forgot to continue their experience with this game and abandon it. It literally looks like an official Spongebob game even though it is not. Has lots of references to a lot of episodes and even some old Spongebob video games. Underrated games too.

About the black eyes its just for us to see it visually
Its like making characters transparent instead of fully invisible you understand thet in universe they are accualy invisible but we allsow should be able see them

The one that scared me the most was with the live action guy in a gorilla suit. Those close of shots made me hide in another room

Spongebob being fine without a helmet in Sandy's dome and then putting one on later actually isn't inconsistent. In the episode where he visits Sandy for the first time, he's able to go a few minutes before starting to dry out.
This one was probably my absolute favorite as a child
You know what was creepy? The end credits music.
I remember as a kid in that scene That jellien Patrick shouts "No Mayonnaise!" It's really funny and scary.
I always thought the green jellien eating the normal jellyfish was kinda dark even for this episode since it’s played eerily straight and they never really show anyone being killed that isn’t in some over the top fashion.

The normal fish dude wasn't freaked out by their looks either, which means their looks are for us. In the universe, they look the same, which, to me, is worse.
Ghoul fools episode was very atmospheric and horrifying too, and it didn’t even have a remotely normal ending

This episode is such a good concept for a Spongebob game. Im honestly surprised Nickelodeon hadn't done it sooner. I know there's an indie game with this exact premise, and it's honestly great. It's called Around the Clock at Bikini Bottom. It's worth giving a try. But I'd love to see an official, polished game ab the concept

I remember not falling asleep because I watched it as my first SpongeBob episode (that I remember (meaning I know I watched SpongeBob before but this is my first memory of the show)) and I just didn't sleep for like a night or two because I had a SpongeBob plush and a SpongeBob picture w/me and at the dark I didn't see their eyes so I thought they were black, good times.

You should check out Around the Clock at Bikini Bottom by Dave Microwave's games and Padre Snowmizzle. That game is an absolute masterpiece, and they put so much love and easter eggs into that game. That game is based on the episode. I recommend this game to anybody; one of the best fan games of all time, in my opinion.
