Really appreciate what you're doing with this series, thanks for putting it out into the great wide world. Climbing and alpinism have such a rich oral tradition of vets handing down stories, grateful to hear these. Keep it up!
John signed my book his book “Tales of the Steep” I love his writing I’m reading lynn Hills Book “Climbing free...my life in the vertical world” she mentions this about John going down there and now I get to hear the whole story thanks for the videos P.S. I hate getting old!
This guy was breaking barriers from camp 4 Yosemite in late sixties, seventies. A rebel for sure. Valley Uprising shows him as a hippie climber from camp 4. He knew all the greats from then
I am so hooked on your channel! Every story seems even more captivating than the last one. Great, great content; and to hear these adventures straight from the mouths of these OGs! 🙏🏻✌🏼 Thank you!
That's an amazing story! That's about as close to death as most people could ever come without being hurt. I'm sure being a rock climber he's had other very close calls. But the last thing a climber expects is death by helicopter due to an empty gas tank.
Thanks! I'd love to. We're planning on releasing a new vid soon and, as for these Tales from the Steep videos, part of the issue is funding. It takes a bit of $ to make these and I've been doing them recently on my own as, I think they are important to share. Thanks again! Please like, share and subscribe! That helps too!
When Rock & Ice Magazine first started, I believe in ‘83/‘84 ... something like that, Ol’ Largo had a running series on his adventures with Dwight Brooks in Papua New Guinea that were honestly.... a wee bit frightening. Never knew if it was Largo being hyperbolic ... or using his “POETIC LICENSE” .... or shooting the straight shite. Regardless they were great fun .... something missing in today’s adventure writing. EDIT: Subscribed

Geez John that’s one helluva story. Holy smokes
A Yosemite golden age climbing Hero. Great, great writer!
Hilarious writer. He’s actually a world class wordsmith.
John Long is a Yosemite climber of legend. One of my fiends climbed with him.

Best of the Best ! 👍
Incredible!
Used to run into John at Mt Rubideau when I started climbing. 87. He showed me around to see the different problems
I met John in the mid-80's at a climbing class. Probably the most charismatic guy I've ever met. A no bullshit nice dude.

That was close . What a story .
Great story.
10:10 "He goes "remember those waterfalls?" and I go "Oh chute" Ok I'll leave the room 😁
Great story! Is there anywhere I can read/watch more about this rappel?
John Long is the FUCKING MAN!!
Harrowing! Scary as shit. I think when the helicopter finally pancaked in I would have said that’s it. I’m done. Retired.
Hah. You would think. :)
It got dark fast because Angel Falls is only 6 degrees north of the equator. Twilight near the equator is short.
The good old days
Arms on that guy.
Largo
rEAL life John Rambo of repelling and river basin escape-John Long rules!
I don't think I've ever read or heard John Long say or write anything mundane
I read this one in Tales From the Steep. Might be better with John Long telling the story.
Fuck ...... rescue was worse than the expedition!
You can't make this stuff up...
rappeling is where most climbers die :)
