hello. DISCLAIMER: this workshop (at least to my knowledge) has no direct connection to the 2024 production in london! this was its own thing, and the main thing that came out of it was the 2018 bochum version. the 2024 london production will probably take general influence from this, but please dont assume that this is exactly what the new production will be like

      Cute?... 🤦🤦🤦!!!!...
The original London production was one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever seen!
Sadly, many of the heavily revised (especially 1993 London) versions have been some of the worst!!!
And the primary reason why is that someone had the "brilliant" idea to keep rewriting/reworking the somewhat gritty, slightly dark, yet younger viewer friendly original incarnation down the downtrodden paths of trying to stay constantly trendy, trying too hard to be overly cute and (worst of all) the ever progressing desire to dumb down the plot, characters and themes to make it accessible to everyone of every age!
Which is the primary reason it became incredibly critically panned!
It seems that the more recent revisions have been taking the show back to its original, edgier feel, which is a good thing!
Just like many other early 1980s entertainment masterpieces that both children and adults loved (IE labyrinth, neverending story, return to Oz, Tron, episodes 5&6 of Star wars, and many more), the original version of this show was so great because it was enjoyable to viewers of all ages and had the ability to offer captivations on several different levels to several different intellectual audiences!
Taking the caboose outta this show is like taking Atreyu outta neverending story!
"Cute" does NOT equal "successfully entertaining!"

@@timonstanzel nor was my comment meant to offend or criticize her. It was moreso an expression of frustration that this extremely unique piece of 80s entertainment essentially became widely known as a laughing stock (no pun intended) for shamefully going against the principles that the original exemplified such as:
      - having the confidence to be unique
      - seeing the strengths and potential advantages you have inside that others fail to see. Their ignorance can become your advantage by using those as leverage.
      - realizing that there is no predetermined fate and our 'destiny' is merely the outcome of our attitude and our actions
-any winner will have to overcome challenges, those who stand against them (especially the ones that deceptionally act otherwise), insecurities, cynics, bullies and the fear of being unaccepted (especially by the ones that they most want to impress)
-believing in yourself and channeling the power of confidence rather than being weakened by the distractions, conjecture and superfluous opinions of others.
I saw the original production as a kid. It was captivating, imaginative, loud, fast, magical, gritty, dark, slightly scary, borderline violent, humorous at times and kinda disturbing at others. It had humor and double entendre I would not fully get for years later.
However, the one thing it wasn't trying to be, but most of its far less superior revisions go full overkill mode on:
-Being overly cute, cliche and fluffy
-constantly trying to incorporate whatever is currently deemed hip or trendy
-continuously changing and transforming itself to be appealing to everyone
And in my opinion, that's why the show is viewed by so many as a disastrous joke.
It went from being this extremely unique and very creative live spectacle that had a plot and concept that required a bit of thought to fully appreciate, but had the ability to appeal to kids as much as adults, yet it did NOT sacrifice the intellect of one age group for that of another.
And at whatever point in the early 1990s it switched to the track of 'let's make everyone like us so we can make more money and stay more relevant and be cute enough for everyone at every age," it sold out on the most important message of the show:
Be what you are and find the strengths they have to offer and don't get distracted by what others think of you! Your ultimate success is based on the belief in yourself not the approval of others! Trying to appease naysayers, critics, backstabbers and bullies will get you nowhere! Appeasing yourself is the track to success!"
I hope I didn't insult the original poster. That was not my intention and if I did, I own up to it!
Lastly, I will have to admit that I'm glad that person who replied to my comment and pointed out that my comment (unintentionally) made me come off like prick, went back and edited his comment ,(which originally started off with "Jesus Christ!").
That saved me paragraphs of explaining how that's a guy in a completely different musical! Actually two, if you count the one that's actually good called "Godspell!" 😉😆
FWiW, I am a cynical prick and I won't deny or runaway from it! I mean... Where's the entertainment value without folks you might really love to hate coz they can face both ways?
I'm obviously referring to Boba Fett!!!! 😁
