    I'm currently going to school for surgical tech. We have not gotten to the instruments yet and was wondering if they were difficult to learn? Also, before each surgery do you get a list of ALL the instruments you will need for the surgery so you can set them out and the order the surgeon will usually use them in?

      I'm a Tech at a Trauma Hospital in St.Louis and a clinical on site instructor. Every surgeon has preference cards, so you'll know what they like as it pertains to instuments, suture, etc. Like anything else in takes awhile to learn instrumentation, once a student gets to me I tell them it takes about 3 years when you finally start to feel comfortable.

      yes, THREE years once you get a job...... you have no idea how much you need to know. Cardio Thoracic, General, Obgyn. GU, ENT, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Neurology, are few of the specialty, now take 20-30 Surgeons outa each specialty and their particular ways to do say a Gallbladder, now add 30-50 diff procedures per specialty...... THREE years was being optimistic, more like 4 but don't wanna freak anyone out

      It really depends on what you do. But to start getting a bit comfortable, it took me about 2 years. By the 5th years, I was very comfortable. But you then have your weak spots or the specialties that you usually don't go in. But once you are comfortable, you get new surgeons, new instruments, and you have to remember that every single surgeon does their specific surgery their way. So that is another thing to memorize. So it's never ending.But then again, you have Doctor Preference Cards or your memory

  • @scrubtek75
    @scrubtek75 7 років тому +4

    Well, we aren't technicians. We are Surgical Technologists. There are so many things wrong in this video that bothered me. One major thing that I noticed was the tech and the nurse counting, yet the nurse was NEVER looking at the instrumentation while counting. I guess she is that good that she memorized the back table and knows where all the instruments are. Therefore, nothing will be left in. That's just me. But as reading many of the comments, there is so much to learn and every single day you learn something. It is very rewarding of what you. It is something that I am glad I have done.

      In the US this particular job is call a surgical technologist or surgical tech and this position does not require a bachelors or university degree at all. You’ll have to attend a surgical tech program that typically take no more than two years to complete. After completion of a surgical tech program you’ll have to get certified through a national surgical tech organization. It’s pretty simple.

      correct way- and this is why you should always wear 2 pairs of gloves. First pair you throw out once surgery is over, Then the 2nd pair is to put on dressings on the patient, so you're not putting bloody dressing on a clean patient. Next, with the 2nd pair on still, you take off your gown from the back. As your doing that and have gotten to the hand parts, you use your thumbs from the inside and help from the outside with the "clean" glove to help stabilize and take out and do the same to the other side. and then you grab your gown with your gloves loosely on and you have everything that you're touching from the inside and just throw it away. It's really easy when you get it do it a lot.

    • @TheBLACKKING25
      @TheBLACKKING25 6 років тому

      Tony Stark You remove your gloves by using one gloved hand to grab the outside surface of the other gloved hand, near the bottom. Then you pull up and slide the glove off. Now with your ungloved hand stick two fingers under the gloves of your other hands and push them up and off. You should obviously never touch the soiled parts and doing it with this method perfects advoidance of infection.
