We all knew that one day a 16 was going to beat a 1... BUT BY 20 POINTS?!?!?!
Not only was it a 16 over a 1, it was the overall 1 seed, just epic.
Can you imagine the shock the UVA players were in after this game? How in the world did UMBC accomplish this? Sure, there were previous close games between a #1 and #16 seed in which the #1 seed still came out on top but this was just an absolute beatdown! To use the term shellshocked would be an understatement. I'm a Kentucky fan and I thought us losing to Robert Morris in the NIT was embarrassing. I can't imagine how UVA fans felt after this one.
@Andrew Furrer If you're talking about Hunter, he wasn't UVA's best player. He was their 4th leading scorer. The top 3 scorers on UVA all played in that game so....
@@GreenDay1981 What has to be especially painful is that there's no getting away from it. Every single year until it happens again, talking heads on Bracketology and at the tournament games are going to be saying "a 16 has never beaten a 1, except that one time Virginia lost". As a fan of a traditional power, I'm actually kind of relieved that someone else was the first.
@@mam162 I'm relieved too. I'm a Kentucky fan and frankly, losing to Robert Morris in the NIT was a bad enough experience for me to go through.
Even if more 16/1 upsets happen UMBC will always be remembered as the first team to do it!
and they crushed them
Name Blocked then ur memory is very short...
not to mention they beat them by 20 points
What Princeton did to Georgetown in 1989, before players left early for the NBA, was more impressive. They won the game in every way except the 50-49 final score. This was sanitized, a reflection of an era of parity.

Just imagine being a Senior on this Virginia team. Your last game is this historic defeat. THEN, the following year -- without you -- your old team goes and _only_ wins the National Championship! Devastating!

Keep in mind.. not only Virginia was the first #1 seed to lose in the 1st round.
UNBC was a #64 ranked and #16 seed
Virginia was a #1 ranked and #1 seed
That’s a huge upset in NCAA history.
all year long so much has gone right for UVA and in the 1st 9 mins of the 2nd half so much has gone wrong
And this why you don’t take any opponent lightly regardless of ranking
Ight chill not every year 😂
Virginia never takes any opponent lightly, how often do you see them lose to lousy teams?
@@DanielSong39 UMBC was far from a lousy team. combo of VA having Hunter out and UMBC having the best player on the court (Lyles). Thats why they lost
@@jessejackson109 I think we are in agreement, VA did not take UMBC lightly. However they became completely rattled in the second half after UMBC went on an early run and gave up easy basket after easy basket. Look at how many of UMBC's buckets were from wide open corner 3's and uncontested layups. Aside from those they had several quality looks from three point range and high percentage shots in the paint.
@@DanielSong39 Ohio not that lousy. But comment didn’t age well, still a 13 seed lol
This game destroyed my bracket and I LOVED IT. So excited for this year
Abu Dhakal If Virginia loses to Gardner-Webb this year I’m fucked...I have Virginia going to the Final Four
@@butwere3-0wou there's speculation that if they lose to g-webb, bennett might be on the hot seat.
Also Zona getting knocked out by Buffalo. I think only first round game from that region I won was Kentucky first round.
Abu Dhakal Virginia is in the finals now
oof
I always thought we would eventually have a 16 over 1, I never thought we'd have a 16 over 1 beat down
and #1 overall seed at that
nnv - The real problem is that many 16 seeds should be placed higher, but come from "minor" conferences.
@@enniswhalen2428 Except UMBC was a 10-loss team who faced 1 ranked team all season and got beat down by that ranked team so I don't think they should have been ranked higher. They wouldn't have been in the tournament at all if they didn't win their conference tournament. I give them kudos for playing their hearts out and accomplishing the unthinkable here but they didn't make a magical cinderella run. They lost in the next round to a 9-seed.
Especially by 20
nintendonerdsvideos me either agreed

The greatest game in March Madness History!!! We will be talking about this for years to come!!!
@Andrew Paschall Exactly. Virginia looked ahead to Kansas State without thinking about the team in front of them, and history was made.
Years?? You mean decades!!
This would be much different if it happened 20 years ago
Princeton-Georgetown 1989 was more shocking.

Literally the greatest game in all of history. Nothing compares to this game.
And it destroyed my bracket. LOL
Same. I don't think a team I've picked to win it all ever lost during the first weekend, let alone on the first day.
Well ever since I have been filling out brackets(2011), I always pick a 1 to lose to a 16! In 2018, I picked Xavier to lose, and something told me to pick Virginia to lose, so I did! I had to work that night, but I made out with 1500 bucks
One of the biggest upsets of all time.
gor9027 the biggest upset. A 16 has never beaten a 1 before this!
@Asskicka71 In Duke is King the 1991 Ncaa championship highlight video 1st round upsets are always an NCAA tradition until that year #15 seed have never beaten a #2 seed Richmond changed that statistic
on paper it looks like the biggest but actually not the biggest spread upset in tournament history. Also, UMBC had the athleticism to convince every basketball lover that it was going to be close. I was surprised they won but figured they would run the whole way with them.
The biggest upset in college
@@insertnamehere2321 No, Division 2 Chaminade beat #1 Virginia in the 1982 Maui Invitational. Can you believe that? lol, Virginia was the time that lost in both of those games haha
Va might beat them 9 times out 10, but not this day...and that's all that matters...dont underestimate an underdog...va looked right past them and umbc came out gunning...really awesome
You mean 99 out of 100 is more like it.
VA woudl beat UMBC 999,999 out of 1 million. But this was the ONE TIME!
In hindsight, it makes sense a team like Virginia would be the first. A team that plays at a slow/deliberate pace is more likely to allow an inferior team to hang around. That's how Princeton almost knocked off #1 Georgetown with Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo 30 years ago. Teams like Pitino's UK or Roy Williams' Carolina squads wouldn't have this happen because they forced mistakes with tempo, pace, and pressure.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Very reminiscent of Georgetown-FGCU because the Hoyas wanted to play a similar pace to Virginia and when the underdog hung with them at halftime then got a notable lead on them, there was nothing the higher seed could do.
Great point! If the other team is hot, like UMBC was, that pace of play is definitely in their favor; not Virginia’s.
also a total clash of style of plays between the two schools. UMBC is all about spacing and pretty much abandons the traditional tactics
As a fan of a team that used to run the Princeton offense, yeah. As interesting (imho, maaaaany people disagree) as it is, it is a playstyle that makes it easier for you to upset good teams, and makes it easier for bad teams to upset you.
The upset made plenty of sense. What didn't make sense, and still doesn't make sense, is the margin of victory. The Retrievers shredded the vaunted Pack Line and took the Cavaliers to the woodshed. A margin of 7 to 10 points would be logical. A 14/15/16 seed winning by 20 defies logic.
This was one of those moments in sports where you’ll always remember where you were when it happened... seriously one of the greatest games in sports history

Here after #16 FDU upset #1 Purdue.
I remember thinking this might be what needed to happen for them to win a natty. Props to UMBC and props to UVA for a legendary redemption run. It was fun to watch
Thank you for posting this!
I think this was more shocking then FDU over Purdue. Virgina was the number 1 overall seed. They still should have cruised through this game even if one of their key players was injured. The Cavaliers simply did not show up and laid an big time egg in this game.
I don't think so. Purdue wasn't the number 1 overall seed, but FDU was a much weaker team. They didn't even win their own conference regular season or tournament, and the NEC is arguably the weakest conference in the country. They lost to some miserable teams, many of them under .500, including one to Hartford, who only had 5 wins. UMBC and Virginia was a clash of styles and you could see more logically how Virginia might lose. Virginia was out a key player and was a slow, methodical team that relied on a great defense. That Virginia team only averaged around 55 points per game, going against a face-paced team that averaged in the 70s. Virginia wasn't equipped to come back from a big deficit. Here, Purdue is not a slow methodical team, they can keep up tempo and pace. Their star is a big guy down low who is going against the smallest team in the country. Sure, Purdue can shoot poorly, but you have that huge advantage down low and know how to at least turn the pace up if necessary. There's just no reason this upset should've happened.
@@DeityPsymonexactly. But still, Edy was basically all you had to stop on Purdue and they really couldn't defend.
It's close, but given Purdue's habit of failure against NEC and MAAC schools, the UMBC win was more impressive.
Odom out coached the NCOY. His team beat up on a historic defense. That same defense was unstoppable the next year.
A compromise: This game is the greatest coaching upset in history. The FDU game is the best team upset.
Watching this in 2019....so good!!!
1 year later there is absolutely no explanation for this. The number 1 overall seed got blown out by a team that got an auto bid. Just...how?
The players lost composure. UMBC ran two plays the entire second half - go straight to the rim and get easy buckets, and shoot semi-contested threes from 2-4 feet behind the mark.
Deandre Hunter was injured completely ruined the chemistry for UVA
Kind of makes sense. UMBC had some momentum winning games to get that auto bid. Virginia was good that year, but that slow paced team was not a pretty matchup against a team focused on offense and had momentum. Plus once they got a taste they could do the impossible, they were probably way more motivated to win than Virginia.
In an ordinary circumstance, Virginia would have slaughtered them
Cause they play slow down boring basketball and when it came down to needing to make shots they couldnt
Underdog having nothing to lose and showing no mercy.
The best thing about this win is that UMBC didn't get some questionable call...they won going away!
You're right nobody can ever call this one a lucky win or a controversial win, they quite simply were the better team that night and it really wasn't close.
And they won by 20 points!
oh man watching all those tears fall was just beautiful. Amazing moment.
UMBC had like 3 points at the 8 minute mark of 1st half. And the game was 19-19 with about minute left in half. This is quite an amazing feat by UMBC. On the opposite side, Tony Bennett handled everything with class in the postgame. But, hella of a game for UMBC. They got on such a roll in the 2nd half.
Who is here after FDU beat Purdue?
I really wish that UMBC won with a last second 3 pointer, it woulda been a story for the ages, instead we have a 16 seed that just destroyed a one seed and its kinda stunning
The Princeton - UCLA game was one of my favorite games ever.
I knew a 16 would eventually beat a 1 but didn't think it would be by 20
If they'd have won with a last second 3 pointer, then you could go back and nitpick calls that did or didn't happen and make excuses for how the game might've been stolen away. The fact that this win was so decisive means you can't take anything away from UMBC. There wasn't anything questionable or silly that puts an asterisk on this game. UMBC flat-out earned it, and there is no way to make excuses or take that away from them.
This is way March Madness is the best!!
A lot of my friends went to umbc at this time (from small maryland town) it was a win for all the little guys especially in md
It's just right that Jim Nantz, Grant Hill and Bill Raftery cover this game.
Cedric R preach
Much as I cannot stand Raftery, he does well here.
As an NC State fan, this is the second-greatest NCAA tourney game ever. I can understand why everyone who isn't a NCSU or a Virginia fan would consider it #1.
NC State has the best story. the 6 seed, the perfect underdog team, almost got upset by Pepperdine in the first round that went to double OT, and goes on to face a stacked Houston squad that was the favorites to win it all, and upset them, with Jim Valvano running around after they did it.
UMBC has the best upset. the weakest team in the field, that advanced on a last second 3 by Lyles to get to the tourney, that had to go face the most obvious overall number 1 in some time up to that point. UMBC played tough the first part, with 21-21, but you've seen this before, the lower seeded team just can't keep up with better teams. the 2nd half of the UMBC-UVA game is just something i go back once in awhile just to make sure that this actually happened. The weakest 16 seed completely destroyed The best team in the nation in that 2nd half. 53 points in one half which is what Virginia usually gave up on the average game. I expected a 16 seed to beat a 1 at some point. but not like that, and definitely not UMBC over Virginia.
@@drpopandfizz Very, very well-put.
Okay, the three-pointers, but the rebounding and the hustle, and the D!?!?!?!…..Like, WOW!!!!!!

MoTown434 And it should be said that Tony Bennett is a good coach, and that Virginia team was great last season, but once they were down that far it seemed like they had no idea how to play a little quicker. I feel like maybe he should let his guys run occasionally

@@nc_guy_gth_dukegaming3019 Texas is extremely athletic, they took MSU by surprise as well. I was very impressed at how we came back, but they are going to turn a lot of heads this year. And yeah, playing UNC is always a good game for us even though UNC always wins hahaha.
