OK no... i will agree with the 90% because it was just on a single playthrough which was over quite a few weeks instead of playing it over a couple of days... so that much understanding over such long dispersed time is even more impressive...

This HAS to be one of the hypest videos on the internet for a fan of the series, because seeing someone with only knowledge of KH1 fit together every detail like this and fully grasp the Nobodies this far ahead of the curve had me leaping out of my chair grabbing my head like "YES! EUREKA! YOU GOT IT! YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK, KEEP GOING!" and whatnot. Such a time.

People tune out, or half-arse it, and then blame the game.
After seeing DBG watch CoM and the KH2 beginning, I can tell he finally understands that if you actually care about understanding it, you will.
Too often do so called "fans" just tell a new player that it's too complicated with no direction, false statements, and they take those thoughts into the game fulfilling their own prophecy if you will. Then they go on to blame the game as well.
If one play everything, KH is not that confusing. I mean, I was confused by some elements in DDD and III but that’s because I didn’t play the X games that would have explained the confusing elements.
The only thing he still didn't seem to grasp was that the events of the game predominantly took place in the Realm of Light - it isn't a mystical unreachable realm like the Realm of Darkness is. The other point which I don't think he fully connected the dots on was the fact that Ansem was the King of Hollow Bastion. Leon straight-up tells Sora this back in Traverse Town, but I guess Dee forgot.
Actually, it has been established previously in this game that Ansem was the ruler of Yuffie and Squall's world: Hollow Bastion. They talk briefly about it the first time you meet them in Traverse Town
They also reveal in Kairi's Grandmother's story that All worlds were once one single world. This world was a world of peace and light but was shattered and separated into fragmented worlds when people became greedy and tried to hoard the light for themselves. This allowed darkness to infiltrate and break it apart.

I think he understood more about Kingdom hearts plot than 95% of people, after only playing KH1.

DeeBee proofs that KH doesn’t have the overly complicated story everybody says it has. Sure it is told in a cryptic way but for the patient and attentive player it is very well understandable.
Tbf KH was never all that confusing until 3D dropped the ball. I think a ton of people gave up on the story after 3D.

@@brave_blue Dream Drop Distance was easily the most confusing sure but it was still really interesting. I don’t know if I’d say they dropped the ball with that game. Aside from 1 of the Disney worlds being a little disappointing
I know it will sound as "i am so smart", but it is about how it actually is something a 10yo can understand...
I normally like games with intense plot and "complicated" stories... even as a kid when i played KH1 understood the story in general without any trouble and the reports made so much more sense about what was to come and what happened to sora when he became a heartless... so when i found out there was so much confusion with other people that played it I was surprised (a long time later when the internet actually became common)... I have only played KH1, CoM, and KH2 even today thou (because of the problem of multiple consoles, i just played the games in PS2 and later KH2. I just bought "the story so far" last week and the PS4 just this monday...
But i think the problem is actually that a lot of people are more used to playing an watching stuff that tells you everything without having to think about it... they skip cut scenes or think that is just there to look cool or something like that instead of the meaning behind it... "NPCs are there just to fill space"...
I can't play sports games like fifa, or shooters no matter what i do thou... i get pummeled in those... i like only games with story because i love understanding what is happening...

thanks for taking the time to actually read the reports, tons of longtime fans dont read them and it shows when they claim that certain plot points in later games come out of nowhere when they were foreshadowed in the reports of earlier games.
I don't understand why anyone would skip the reports in this series, I remember being upset that you didn't het reports in KH3 until endgame.

to be fair, the original version of kingdom hearts did not have the extra ansem reports that talked about nobodies and had all the foreshadowing about certain characters.
@@Speedj2 I think the original KH1 “final mix” did have those extra reports. It just was final mix exclusive, and at the time it was Japanese only. It was only until the HD remixes where they finally got localized. So they “technically” still existed in the year 2003.

You have no idea how refreshing it is to see someone with your enthusiasm for understanding the lore of this series. I can think of countless LP-ers who don't read that much into the story because of how goofy the games can be. But I always love seeing people like you get really into the mystique underlying all the Disney aesthetic, because there is so much underneath the surface of this series for those who are willing to dig a little bit deeper for it.

Ironically enough the further into the series you go somehow more will make sense and paradoxically somehow make even less at the same time. Enjoy the emotional rollercoaster!
It does have disney but it's not really created for children. Cause children wouldn't be able to understand most of it til they got older. And even then...people still get confused. XD
But I like the story I think understand most of it.
Good point. I think it's fair to say that the games were designed so all ages could enjoy them, but the plot was designed to appeal to detectives and conspiracy theorists.

I’m seeing you’re a little confused Dee so let me explain as best as I can:
-Heartless are born from the darkness in people’s hearts. When the heart is removed, the light is consumed by the Heartless taking it. What remains is the darkness, and thus a new Heartless comes into existence. The body vanishes, but the body is *not* the heartless.
-All living things have hearts, both people and the worlds. When a Heartless consumes a world’s heart, the world is destroyed and was sent to the “End of the World” which was all that was left
-There are natural and artificial heartless. The natural ones do not have the black and red heart symbol, while the artificial ones do.
-Ansem and the Final Fantasy characters come from Hollow Bastion. The FF Characters were his people
People always seem to forget that Darkness does exist in pretty much every person’s heart in the series. Minus the 7 princesses and 1 other character later on, which are individuals of Pure Light and have no darkness in their hearts.
This basically means the vast majority of characters are capable of falling to darkness and/or turning into a heartless.

You watch his streams? The guys got full big brain going on and figured out almost everything and he just finished the Struggle tournament on stream today! I don't think he got the memo that KH is supposed to be a complicated plot, because he isn't participating in the confusion.

Also, Dee misunderstood something on the report. Ansem didn't 'created' the darkness , he simply 'extracted' the darkness from his test subjects since darkness was already inside in every being right from the very start. All also, Ansem only kept a handful of test subjects, he didn't took an entire world of people. Dee should play Birth By Sleep after this, since it's the beginning of everything.
I've been into KH and its community for years and you are no joke one of the biggest brains I've seen, especially in todays KH2 stream
And people said he would be confused if he didn’t watch 358/2 Days first.
All you have to do is keep in mind what you have learned and be attentive.

@@masterprick1 Puzzling the pieces together is part of the fun of KH. I always compared KH with animes/mangas for that. It’s like every game is a new arc wich answers previous questions while also giving hints and new questions for future arcs. I would never recommend playing out of order if you want the best experience.
But then my opinion isn’t the ultimate one.

I can see what you mean, in my case I always preferred release order since each game usually builds on the previous one and to me at least some mysteries in KH1 and KH2 work when you don't know what happened in BBS. Speaking on chronological order, I can't wait for the final UX update and the eventual completion of DR later this year.
Deciphering these reports as a child was a hell of a childhood.

Idk I just pretend KH stopped after 2, I played the others at least once each but I just don't like them. I'm kind of exaggerating, I just think they took the lore of KH1 and shat on it in later games.
That throbbing headache you now feel means you're now a Kingdom Hearts fan. ONE OF MILLIONS, CONGRATULATIONS. You'll understand more as you play through the series in order so hang on for the wild ride, as well as the stress induced anxiety.
Since this is the last video with KH1 content I wanted to leave a huge thank you DeeBee. This journey has been nothing short than amazing. I wasn’t really sure if you were really enjoying KH but Iam glad to say that my view has completely changed. Your investment into this series so far has made this Let’s Play so fun and as a KH Fan since 2002 it makes me so glad to see that people are still willing to get into this series and are having so much fun with it. KH is such an magic experience.
KH1 was amazing, CoM was interesting but KH2 started and will end glorious!

My theory, as someone who never played Kingdom Hearts before:
The body and soul, if separated from the heart, apparently go to a different world, but without the heart they are not truly complete and are dubbed “Nobody.” The Heartless that takes that person’s place is a remnant of the whole person. The Heartless, therefore, are attracted to other hearts because they wish to be whole again, but instead corrupt the hearts they take. The Heartless wish to obtain the Kingdom Hearts as well. However, the light of the Kingdom Hearts is too powerful. One of two things happen here:
Either the light of Kingdom Hearts destroys the Heartless, or it sends them to the second world where the body and soul reside to become whole again. But then again, that don’t make sense because the Heartless apparently also come from that side as well so...
I’m utterly stumped. :3

As someone who has played all of the games, let me tell you you were pretty spot on about the Heartless and Nobodies. Kind of fell apart when you started talking about Kingdom Hearts, but that’s not your fault. KH1 in particular does a pretty lousy job explaining what Kingdom Hearts is.

Just watched your first kh2 stream and I'm finding it hard to believe you haven't looked any of this up. You're so damn quick with putting pieces together and so far I don't think a single one if your predictions has come out wrong, barring some information you weren't/aren't aware of at the time. For real though, big props to you! As someone who didn’t see that last report until after having played the rest of the series (it wasn’t in the original international release of KH1), it’s really cool seeing someone read it at this stage of the series. And yeah, the other comments are right, you’ve got it like +90% figured out based on the information you’ve been given! Looking forward to Re:CoM!
What’s really cool about the reports is that you only collect the odd numbered reports over the course of the game’s story, one for each major boss you fight. Reading just the odd numbered reports casts Ansem in a positive light, while the even numbered reports show that he had a hidden ambition to his reports all along, that doesn’t come about until after you see him in Hollow Bastion. That always stuck with me as a kid playing this.

But from what I can tell you’re actually doing pretty well as far as putting the pieces together and understanding it. That’s more than I can say for myself and probably most of the fandom 😅
You only missed one thing, he didn't used Gummi blocks to travel different worlds.
He wondered through the deepest darkness and to do that he had to cast away his body, most likely that he became a heartless himself by using his machine cuz when you fight Ansem he has the emblem.
Although it's not clear how it kept his consciousness after giving himself to the darkness to recover he used Riku's body and not his own. Maybe that's why he's curious if a body can still exist after becoming a heartless.
So Ansem was basically the ruler of Hollow Bastion. It was said very briefly in the story. So the subjects in his tests were citizens of Hollow Bastion.
And every world in KH has a heart, and all heartless seek after hearts. We saw Hollow Bastion’s door in the place where Sora and Riku fought.
Otherwise you’re understanding things pretty well. Really fun seeing you react to the series’ confusion.

This is the type of new KH fan I love, the type that really wants to understand and thus goes and reads the ANSEM REPORTS and ends up understanding (well, as well as one can understand this series lol). You’re amazing, Dee, for being such a dedicated player in every game you play, and I have such an appreciation for your want to get into this series.
I’m late to bring this up, but something I loved about this is that you only get the odd numbered reports up until you defeat Maleficent, at which point you get the even-numbered reports that cover the gritty details about the human experimentation and the like. So you only learn the dark side of what he did right before meeting the man himself.
Yeah, no kidding. DeeBigBrain has been spoiling himself by figuring out almost everything about Nobodies and he hasn't even left Twilight Town in 2 yet in the stream. Seriously, his over analyzing these reports left him miles ahead in understanding what's going on compared to most players.
i'm close to finishing the main storyline in kh1 (i just defeated dragon maleficent today) and these reports literally make so much sense. i'm not sure what happens in kh2 and kh3 but judging from the replies your explanation and understanding was correct and i'm getting so invested in this story lmao

Nah man just play all the games 4-6 times and it make sense 😏 but seriously 2.8 is what is the confusing part for me. I get 1.5,2.5 Rechain and BBS but DDD- oh my lord.

When he was talking about the machine that creates heatless, and in the background showed Sora wandering by that machine with the pods in Hollow Bastion... No spoilers, my friend, but that machine is something else entirely. And it's incredibly crucial to the plot.

I'm glad you're fun with the series. Earlier I watched your kh:com archive i and enjoyed it! It's actually my personal favorite of the series because of its story and I honestly really liked the unique gameplay, though understandably it isn't a stream suited game.
I really wanted the first kh2 stream to be the first stream i watch you live but I couldn't make. But I'm still super stoked to see the archive!
As a child i understood probably a bit more of this game than i should have. I think at the time it was easier for me to make all the connections between the various abstract bs contained therein. Having grown up, this series definitely gives me a headache, but i absolutely love them to death. Cant wait to binge the rest of your playthrough, and congrats on your supreme comprehension abilities, my dude!
Ooh i really love what i see and hear now the editing is actually really cool and obviously you know how to use the info in order to understand the story and yet you miss some things (and it’s understandable) but yeah you really have a big brain!

5:39 I just want to clarify something you missed: There are 2 different types of Heartless.
First, is the “Pure” Heartless, which are Heartless that come up and grow in the Realm of Darkness for (these are the Heartless that Ansem discovered). They are recognizable as Heartless that don’t bear it’s emblem anywhere (like Shadow, Giga-Shadow, Neo-Shadow, Darkball, Darkside, etc.)
And then, there’s the “Artificial” Heartless. These Heartless were created during the experiments of Ansem. They’re recognizable as Heartless that are marked with the Heartless’s Emblem (Like the Soldier, Air Soldier, Bandit, Powerwild, Gargoyle, Pirate, Air Pirate, Battleship, Behemoth, etc.).

The Realm of Light: It’s where the game takes place with the Disney Worlds and others.
The Realm of Darkness: Basically, it’s where the Heartless live and grow.
15:47 you sir.......have NO idea how correct you are. And Just how much crazier this wild ride gets. Kingdom Hearts is DEFINITELY a lore heavy game, in the lines of the Zelda franchise. And utilizes a lot of the same plot devices. But it's definitely great storytelling and I'm SO excited to see you cover it.
The way you did this was so epic, it felt like I was watching a thriller or murder mystery! Top notch with music, editing and just all how you did this, not sure you could make reading reports more exciting if you tried! (New to KH too, loved watching your playthrough)

On Ansem Report Nr. 12, at 17:50, an important thing to note is that the intro part of this report was slightly mistranslated in English (or perhaps they made a confusing localization choice there) - it's apparently supposed to be Ansem talking in first person about himself, after he discarded his own body in order to try and become a Heartless himself.
He should've watched the cutscenes with the secret boss in Hallow Bastion. It would have blown his mind after reading the reports.
Kingdom hearts lore, for as convoluted as it gets later on, is so damn good. I don’t care what anyone says.

The realm of Darkness, where the non-emblem heartless are from, and where the heart of worlds is located
the realm of in between, where the shells of those separated from their hearts form as "nobodies", also home to Traverse Town, Hollow Bastion, Destiny Islands, and where Chain of Memories takes place.
The secret boss you fought in Hollow Bastion says hes just a shell, so if you put two and two together you can figure out whose shell he is.

So excited to see you upload part 1 of kh2. Managed to catch the vod today and I was so happy to see how excited you were to continue the story and how much you loved the gameplay and story structure so far.
For those inevitably concerned by my comment, who plan on typing "But WhAT AbOuT cHaIN oF MeMOrIES?!?!?!?1" relax folks, he is fully going through all the games, or at least watching all cutscenes from all games. He did that for CoM because the gameplay wasn't as enjoyable for him as expected. And he did have many enjoyable reactions in there too.
Back to KH2 though, seeing him play and experience 2 was amazing, fantastic, and he's very insightful and introspective when it comes to specific plot points. It was a blast to watch and I may start always watching vods again for KH2 just because I want to experience it firsthand so to speak with him despite loving his editing structure. (though more secondhand still because it's still vods)
Deebee, if you see this. I'm so happy to still be along for the journey man. These past 5 years of following and supporting you have not been wasted in my eyes. Even though I mainly started supporting for MHA, seeing you play my favorite childhood, and now adulthood, game series has been a real treat
This was an excellent video! Especially the music, it really gave the Ansem Reports that deep dark and twisted feel that they deserve. And yeah, the Heartless are essentially a zombie apocalypse if zombies good shoot fire and destroy planets. They're arguably the most dangerous race of enemies in video games not because of the danger they pose to you speciifcally, but because of the danger they pose to all of creation.
In the final summery, I think you nailed it with the nobodies. Overall, so much well thought out insight, especially given how convoluted this can be. I really enjoyed watching.
I literally never bothered reading the ansem reports like ever, but i had no idea that they explained so much of where the story went from the first game onward. This game literally made nobodies before nobodies were a thing. like wow. I'm impressed. And Dee bee geek deciphered it so well!

You watch his streams? He did his first stream of 2 today and got to the end of the Struggle tournament. He basically figured everything out. It was Mickey with the candlestick in the library.

@@ryapowa kind of? This video is actually the first hour or so of his first CoM stream, but he didn't care for the gameplay and chat convicted him to just do the cutscenes. He stopped playing after the first world and saw the scenes for the rest next stream.
Basically, he figured out from the reports and dialogue in Re:CoM that the Organization were being completely serious when saying they were Nobodies (capital N) and weren't being figurative when they said they had no hearts or didn't feel anything. And in today's stream, part 1 of KH2... well, just watch it. Big Brain and the chat went wild.
This simplified description of the word is for the sake of anyone interested in the concept since it is not only used in this game, even though it is pretty common knowledge for anime and japanese game and culture lovers...
The reason why the word Heart is used so much is bacause in Japanese the word KOKORO means Heart, Mind and Soul at the same time... so sometimes when in japanese in the Ansem reports they used the word "heart" twice in the same sentence, they mean Mind VS Soul for example... So although they use the same written word... the nuance of the phrasing is different...
And for the sake of this explanation of the japanese language itself (without actually being based on anything they said in the game, just an example to explain the japanese concept). You could split the KOKORO/HEART in three and while those 3 different parts together are one whole concept, at the same time each of those parts have their own individual complete meaning... they are just... connected... Heart, Mind and Soul...
Heart being your "feelings" we could say... A Mind being what makes you function as an intelligent functional living being... and a Soul being what makes you "Human", your morality, ethics (maybe), etc... While having all 3 together is what would make you "Human", hat would make you "YOU"...
FYI the word for the organ "heart" is shinzou (心臓)...

I enjoy this video and the editing you put into it a lot, but in future games I definitely recommend you read any notes/papers you get as you get them. They can be easier to understand in context and I feel like a lot of significant plot points probably went over your head while playing (like not understanding anything about the main boss or his motivations 😅😅).

I’m only just now realizing that the World of Chaos heartless is probably Ansem’s gummy ship, but filled with massive amounts of darkness. It even has the same dome that Excalibur/Highwind has and is built the same way
Watching Deebee try to untangle the massive web of Kingdom Hearts' lore is..... intense.
How I understood it was: a person consists of 3 parts (body, heart and soul). A body can lose a heart, or a soul, or both. The darkness can destroy your heart, and you become a heartless. When someone becomes a heartless, they lose their body and soul, eventually. These two components can either separate, or if the soul is strong enough, combine with the body to become a nobody. When I recall correctly it is stated in one of the ansem reports that the souls remains with the body. As far as I know we never had a separation of the soul from any character. Sadly we don’t even really know what the souls purpose is in the KH universe.
@@TimmysohnLP Yes, the only way for body to continue to exist is with the soul, or else it is gone. Once the heartless is destroyed, the freed heart can rejoin the nobody to reform the person.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of a cute and cool crossover between Disney and Square characters hiding a highly-convoluted plot... and this is from the first game :P (well, technically a "Final Mix" of the original, as we originally never had the various extras added in that Japan exclusively had for the PS2 for the longest time until now, like the extra lightsaber boss, the Cloud vs Sephiroth fanservice fight and a 13th Report teasing a little something for the then-upcoming second game.)
I have been playing Kingdom Hearts since I was a kid, but I never actually read these reports. This is very fascinating! I probably would have been confused as a kid. I enjoyed watching your reaction and theories while also experiencing these for the first time myself. I'm interested in seeing you play the other games.
Yk I’ve gone through this game’s story many times in my head, after playing Kh1, and I’ve only now just realized that the variations of the story about the Keyblade wielder;the one that says he brought chaos and ruin and the one that says he brought peace and prosperity or whatever are almost certainly heavily connected to Sora and Riku, the only two people the Keyblade didn’t reject.While Sora was the good guy who stopped Ansem and restored the world, Riku was the one who helped almost destroy everything in blind pursuit of his goal.
Or maybe it’s just referencing two other figures in those positions.

Something that you seemed to confuse was what the Realms of Light and Darkness are; the Realm of Light is the universe we play in as Sora, going through Destiny Islands all the way to Hollow Bastion, though the Realm of Darkness seems to be like Hell, the Realm of Light is the realm of the living

The Realm of Light is the Realm, where most of the worlds exist such as the Disney worlds.
The Realm of Darkness is a deep and dark cave, where those go that are swallowed by the darkness. The remains of swallowed worlds are also found here. One entrance to this realm is the "End of the World" of Kingdom Hearts 1.
The Realm in Between is simply the borderline between those two realms. But there are a few worlds existing here and keeping a balance between light and dark.
I'd like to remind everyone that you got mostly the odd numbered reports first, which can be seen as kind of ambiguous and curious, while the even number ones you got after you found out he was evil are the things where he talks about his horrible experiments and stuff. It was brilliant i how they executed it.
Basicly, what he explained in the final report, when a heart get stole by a heartless, the body, who is still animated by the soul, disappear to exist in another world. So two versions of you exist in two different world ; the heartless and the ''mere shell'' of the person who lost his heart to which he gave the name, at the end of the reports, ''Nobody''. So basicly he explains that when you lose your heart to the darkness two beings are created ; a Heartless and a Nobody. With the information of the last report I suggest you to re-read the dialogues of the secret boss
PS : the reason why the Nobody is neither light or darkness (this is the part where you've lost it) is because light and darkness comes from the heart. Furthermore, since they don't posess a heart because the Heartless ''counterpart'' took it, it cannot have an affiliation to light nor darkness.

I always wondered if they'd introduce a third Heartless-like being in KH3. These reports detail dividing a person into three separate entities: the heart, the soul, and the body.
When separated, the heart becomes a Heartless, and what's left(in theory, the body+soul) becomes a Nobody.
I wondered if it was _just_ the body that become a Nobody, and the soul would become something else(a Soulless?)
The 13th report was talking about "Nobodies".

If there is one thing that I can offer as advice for notes like these, it is this; Take what you see as literal. These secret notes are not speaking in riddles or metaphors. It's all very much supposed to be taken at face value. A lot of people get tripped up over the lore because they assuming there's some sort of metaphysical commentary going on, but in reality it's all tangible and very much real.
