- This seems like a simple question, take two skyscrapers, like the petronas towers in Malaysia or the Sears Tower (Willis Tower) in Chicago and tell me which one is taller? But this questions has been dividing people for decades. #shorts #architecture

The Shanghai Tower just got pushed back to 3rd place because of the Merdeka 118 which is again, in Malaysia 🤦🏻 Shanghai Tower is a bit taller with more floors. They definitely shouldn't count Spires, but technically you can go into a spire as opposed to antennas which is why I think they count

2. Tallest by highest occupied floor

There was a planned building called "the Illinois" that would be by far the largest in the world. There are blueprints for it and everything they just never built it.

The United States actually has a maximum 2,000 ft max height for any structure. Probably lobbied by the FAA at some point... So until that changes, there is no chance the US can exceed the Burj Khalifa.

2nd one, the first one is technically bigger but the difference is that the antenna on the first building are detachable and thus a separate part of the building while the antennas on the 2nd one are a part of the building itself

@@FiftyStates5 The building’s offices are leased out to various companies - the Sears company had the naming rights of the building included in their lease, and when they moved out the naming rights was transferred to the Willis Group (another tenant). Of course, nobody actually acknowledges the name change even if that’s what it’s called on paper.

How it should be measured is either highest inhabited floor or, my favorite, the height in respect to the width and length, but you do have to do some bound integrals to do that so nobody is doing that but in my opinion it’s better than other ways to measure height

If it isn't used, it has no need to be there, and is just extra.
But since we counted the whatchamacallits, it seems like the tallest permanently attached part of a building matters.
Otherwise counting the antennas you might as well count the air that rests on the building too. Occupied floor is all that matters.

Used and occupied are two different things. A building can have a large room with super high ceilings in the top, it's still very much part of the building even though it's not occupied. Or it could have unoccupied space for building equipment, like HVAC, and it's still part of the building.
