A general thought and opinion here, Jen. I think Disney has lost the original vision they had at the get-go. They've gone from family focused, to money focused, and quality has deteriorated accordingly. Given the gazillions of dollars they rake in, ridiculously pricing anything is beyond unnecessary. And is proving to be to their detriment. Very thankful for your transparency and honesty at all times
Yes the quality of food at Disney World has declined dramatically - We now eat most meals outside of Disney World and we’ve been staying at the Hilton Signa which is onDisney property saving over 1k per trip!
@@mullins809 I will say this up front that I'm not trying to start an argument. I was a cast member at WDW many moons ago, and from my personal experience, food at the parks have improved greatly over the years. The prices of course can still be way higher compared to off-property establishments, but I also think how you see the value depends on where your reside, and what's the "normal" prices in your day-to-day life. Disney food prices at the parks are reasonable compared to where I live/work. Alcohol/cocktail prices? They are also all on par with Disney. Now, I'm not saying food at Disney is great value and all taste amazing, not even close! LOL! 🤣(that's a dream!) Do I stock my own quick easy breakfast and snacks, and eat some meals off property when I go to Disney to save money? Absolutely! But I think they are definitely better now than years ago when most menus at the parks were just burgers, sandwiches and chicken tenders.
Oh, I think Disney is still very family focused and inclusive and overpriced merchandise is certainly not limited to Disney. It’s a plague now matter what theme park you visit. I prefer the memories over “the stuff”.
I appreciate that you look at the big picture and don't want to encourage people to spend what they don't have. Honestly, it's not a trait that I see in a lot of influencers. I appreciate your honesty and integrity.
I absolutely LOVE the term “Disney Minimalist”! I’ve been running by that title for a bit now and I’m loving the results much more. I feel like I spend less and appreciate more. And of course that’s for all areas of life, not just Disney. But I think it works really well when it’s so easy to get sucked in with a brand that has so many people influencing it.
completely agree! The past few years have deeply changed a lot of us and “stuff” just isn’t as important as living in the moment, and being grateful for what you have. ❤
Boy, Jen, you hit the nail on the head with the "deluxe" hotel comments. I almost cried when confronted with the Polynesian tower debacle and how the beautiful luau area was demolished to make room for it. Gone are the days of walking out of the Poly lobby and smelling the gardenia blossoms that grew on either side of the walkway leading to the lagoon. Gone are the days of the huge water feature in the lobby and its fragrance. Thank God for my memories, and photos of past vacations!
You are completely nailing what is lacking at Disney these days. The merch really is lacking the “cuteness” and quality they once had. As for the on property prices, things have gone from somewhat affordable to catering to a certain clientele I feel. We still go, but have also downsized to Pop century and we love it. The theming is a bit more over the top than I like, but the accommodations are comfortable and the sky liner is a great option for transportation.
Thanks for your transparency. Jen. I sadly agree with you on all points. We have loved the parks/resorts and gone many times over the past 33 years, and have noticed a gradual decline of all of the things that made it special.
I cannot begin to express my disappointment at the deterioration in quality. Not just in terms of merchandise and food quality but also service. Prices have never been higher but the product they're delivering diminishes every time I go.
Great honest talk, Jen. I’ve been a Disney minimalist for decades as getting a room and tickets into the parks has always been number 1 with us. But I am glad I don’t know how much we’ve spent on food over the last 30 years in the World! 😊
Agree with your 100 percent Jen but I fear I’m over my Disney magic. It feels like a loss Breaks my heart Try as I may I can’t figure out the exact reason why Combination of my age, the pandemic, the Disney value changes , the cost and crowds…. It’s a loss to me I am thankful for the over 35 years we have gone to the parks and the ten years of magic and pixie dust as a TDS cast member . I hope it comes back , miss the magic😅
I stayed the week after Christmas at a Deluxe Resort 5 minutes from Sea World, $158 a night. Service was impeccable! 10 - 15 drive to Epcot. Daily housekeeping and valet parking was $35 and able to come and go as many times as necessary. No more Disney stays for me!
I totally understand your feeling about Deluxe resorts. Before COVID I could get a room at Wilderness Lodge for 370-380, now it’s 700 minimum - what!? I just had a great stay at Pop Century. I took the skyliner for Riviera for quick service meals and got all of the Deluxe vibes I needed. If I were traveling in the summer I would miss a relaxing pool - so I would consider offsite. One exception - if I had a big family and I couldn’t do a holiday party extra ticket event, I would do a night at a deluxe resort for the extended evening events, because those are amazing.
You couldn’t be more on point for the merchandise at Disney!! I’ve been going a couple of times and have also noticed that I’m not buying anything anymore and just being more thoughtful of the way I spend my hard earned money
I totally get what you're saying and where you're coming from - just want to throw out there the benefit of the fantasy/escapism you're offering to viewers. I can't realistically see myself booking a Disney cruise (or, any cruise) - but watching your vlogs helps my curiosity, and lets me see what that whole world is like. I love your honest opinions about the experiences too, maybe I'm not so sad I'm missing out on the crowds and the heat and the poor quality cupcakes! I hope someone struggling to make rent wouldn't actually be considering financing DVC, but watching videos and dreaming "One Day..." may just be the mental break they need. Keep giving us things to smile about!
I used to spend $10K per year on two mass market cruises. We recently purchased Wyndham timeshares (resale) locally in AZ, and every other year on the Big Island Hawaii. Rather than spending $20K (2019 prices) on 4 cruises every 2 years, we're spending $4K on timeshares, and will do one nice cruise the opposite year of Hawaii. Like merchandise at Disney, these major cruise lines are making cuts. I feel like we're going to be traveling better, and for cheaper, which is the best we can do with the economy looking forward.
I loved this! I spend a lot of time at the resorts especially and the past couple of years I’ve realized my favorite thing is the time I spend in the moment, enjoying being in the bubble… and it has nothing to do with buying anything. In fact buying needless stuff lessens the experience in many ways. ❤❤❤
Yes! It totally does! And then i have to stress about getting it all home and storing it and….nope. Been there done that DONT have the tshirt (see what I did there?$
I'm so glad that this video showed up in my feed! I feel much the same as you do. I still love going into the gift shops, but can't make myself spend money for another Loungefly backpack, etc. I think my age has something to do with it, but so nice to see someone who is not so gung-ho on all things Disney that common sense has to take over - and when I'm gone, no one is going to want the Disney tchotchkes. We were there in November and I purchased a Christmas sweatshirt. It was cute, but outside the park, it wasn't nearly as enticing once we got home. I think I'm done...
Good for you Jen!!!! I’m gonna be honest I’ve never thought I’d hear this from you, thank you for being quite maybe the only influencer that’s really telling it like it is. I picked up on it 4 years ago. Haven’t been since, we’ve explored other incredible places and cruise lines and have honestly enjoyed our time more there then at Disney and it was. 10x cheaper.
In terms of the resorts, we just got back from a 7 night stay at the dolphin-we loved it and the location was just perfect for us, as well as getting the bonvoy points/upgrade etc!
Thanks for this video, Jen! Lately, I've been feeling alot of similar things towards Disney merch. I have a room dedicated to all my Disney-themed things but I realized it's been a while since I added to it. I realized that my mindset was shifting from buying a full collection of something to really considering whether I really want something and only spending on few unique items. With the prices going up on everything too, I also feel like I'm subconscious take a break from my Disney Fandom, which brought me so much excitement but for the moment, it doesn't seem as shiny and special anymore. Still love Disney but maybe I just needed a break and a breather😅
Hi Jen! Love your videos and how you share you’re thoughts even if some may not agree- loooooooove hearing it all 🙌🙌🙌 You mentioned WDW in Jan.- I would love your opinion on going in Jan when itslow crowd time for cost savings vs going in 'low crowd' time in early Dec to experience Christmas & Christmas party. We're a family of 6 (kids ages 5-13) & love OKW - we're planning a trip to celebrate the end of a year of treatments for brain cancer for the husband. I knew you would have an honest opinion on the savings vs the 'special' aspect of Christmas. Thank you again for all your honesty and thoughts and bringing joy and GOOD in this world!
I love when you said by and large about stuff we maybe don’t need. Just reminds me of Wall-E’s Buy N Large. I was talking to a cast member last month about how I miss more unique items at the parks and she said some of it was due to supply chain issues when ordering last year. Fingers crossed better stuff comes back!
Yup - similar conclusions here - buying little to no items. Not enamored of merch of late, costs are scary, quality is meh. I do enjoy the value and moderate resorts with their updated rooms. Yay for Skyliner at Pop. And love Coronado, too.
Thank you for being sensitive to the economic situation of your viewers. You are the first one I have heard address that as you talk about Disney in general.
Thank you - having been laid off and in dire straights, it’s something I’m always super sensitive too because when you’ve been through it you never forget.
Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated. I watched your video “when my husband lost his job. 10 tips for coping” it is a video I have passed onto others because it isn’t a topic I see covered. If it happens, it is an emotionally chaotic time and your advice has been helpful and relatable.
Totally agree with your thoughts and rational! We have been staying at the Swan and have enjoyed the location and accommodations of it there just as well as Beach and Yacht Club. The only desert I get is the Key Lime Pie from the Deli/Bakery on the Boardwalk.
Thank you for the video. I always dream of all the Disney merchandise I am going to buy and then when I get there I just can’t justify it. It’s so expensive.
Disney filled a need for me, it has been great to go with my sister and parents (it got my dad to get a stress test that saved his life). But we’re all in agreement that the need was met and we know where to find it in the future if we need it. I’m grateful for what I’ve gotten from it-wonderful friends, my first marathon, great memories.
Yes, it used to feel like you were welcomed into being a part of something amazing. Now I’m looking for where I’m being taken advantage of. I still own DVC but I am no longer plotting for how I can get more.
I appreciate your honesty and integrity.... Most Disney vloggers push the Disney brand all the time and I don't think it is worth my hard-earned money! I am retirement age so I watch where I am spending my money. I was planning to go back but there are so many other places my husband and I can visit and travel for half the price so we decided we don't need to go back to Disney right now.
Thank you so much for bringing this to light! We no longer take our kids because of the high prices at $180 a ticket and only doing 5? Rides if we are lucky that’s $36 a ride per person. I feel like the merchandise has declined as well the experience and quality. A piece of cake so thin I could see the plate, three steak pieces the size of a quarter at Cafe Orleans. A life based on materialistic things does not leave to happiness and this company encourages consumption and endless dissatisfaction to buy more.
When I was a poor single mom, we would camp for a couple of nights at Ft Wilderness, ride the monorails, have Dole Whip I. The Polynesian and then watch the fireworks. My kids did not even miss the parks.
I completely agree with you. We went to Disney in September and I thought the merchandise was under whelming and over priced. To me it seems like some of the magic has been lost.
I agree with everything you've said. I cherry pick my very favorite things- like chili mango dole whip!- and definitely spend less on other things I don't feel are worth the price. We are doing more non-Disney travel, too. You're right that it's ok to change your tastes over time. Thanks, Jen!
Jen, it never ceases to amaze me how much we think exactly alike! I agreed with everything you said in this video. In fact since February 2021 I’ve been saying “I’ve broken up with Disney…is it forever, probably not! But for now they need to work on themselves”
So glad you mentioned about the merchandise. When I discovered Disneyworld… one of my favorite things was stopping in all the stores. There was sense of discovery because there were so many clever and imaginative things. Now everything things feels homogenous and kind of boring.. I miss those days… I also just finished my stay at Riviera. I travel in many premium/luxury resorts around the world as well. I agree The Riviera was not worth the price and is not comparable with other premium resorts. I felt like I was staying at a Bonnet Creek resort.. Going forward, I’m staying at moderate resort to get my Disney fix or use my points Waldorf or Reserve.
Love your term Disney minimalist! 💖 It's really easy to get swept up by the hub-bub, so I appreciate your words of you can love Disney and not over spend on everything. *unrelated* It's been a hot minute since I had a chance to watch any videos (new job in a new school) and wow! your hair is so long and gorgeous!
I absolutely agree 🎉 I mean Disney’s philosophy has always been “here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy “ but now they try to change the hotels and make them more contemporary like they are doing it in Florida and apparently Paris. Don’t want to know how the Disneylandhotel in Paris is going to look like after the refurbishment…. It takes from the magic though. It’s not supposed to look like it looks everywhere in our day to day lives but it should transfer us into fairy tales and other worlds. Merchandise is often low quality, what has been embroidered once is often imprinted now, prices for merchandise, food and anything increase, what was once for free like fast passes were is now liable to costs now … Genie plus… still this reservation system… I still love the parks and want to visit every Disney park still but it’s not the same as it used to be anymore… I stayed off property back in August last year in Anaheim (Tropicana) and will choose a value resort for WDW… in Disneyland Paris I’m actually a passport holder and stay in Disney hotels but still prices are insane 😅
I totally agree with you on the merchandise and the deluxe resorts. Disney World used to be what I thought about when I was sad or stressed to cheer myself up. Now it actually makes me sad when I think about it. I can no longer justify the cost of deluxe resorts, and the moderates and values don’t appeal to me (and I’ve stayed at three moderates and two values). Seeing what they’ve done so far to my favorite deluxe, the Boardwalk, actually brought tears to my eyes. And don’t get me started on the hoops you have to jump through to go to a park. After twenty trips, I think I may be done with Disney World.
Hi Jen! Happy New Year! I know it has been sometime, I like the long hair. I fully understand your video and what you are talking about. Disney has gotten out of hand. In my December trip to Orlando, I only went to Disney three times, once to Disney Springs to go to Edisons for dinner to meet up with a friend and have the Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese (You are the one that told me about that and the Just Trust Me Old Fashion. My friend Ingrid that is a bartender there came up with and it is so good, they put it on the drink menu. If you like Old Fashions, I highly recommend it. Anyway, after playing golf at Disney for the last 4 years, I did play there once on this trip, just too expensive, I play the Fairways Mini Gold course next to the Swan Reserve twice, but what was all the golf that I plated on Disney property, I just played a lot of the courses around Orlando on this trip and spend all of my park time at Universal. I have an AP and no need for reservations, I can come and go as I pleased. I have never been one for merchandise, just a tee shirt from time to time. Kind of glad that I did not purchase DVC, as I am leaning on buying a condo in Orlando next year. Glad to see that your channel is going well. Ken
Love your honestly on what occurring w/ channel and cost of a vacation to Disney!!! I’ve simply had come to conclusion that while my husband and I make decent salaries and keep our expenses w/in budget, a trip to Disney doesn’t have the same bang for buck. We cannot justify the cost, so we have to go “Disney Lite”. A trip will happen but may be another 1-5 years. In the meantime, Im watching vloggers (cruise or parks) when i need a “fix”.
I totally agree with many of the things you said about Disney. It makes me so sad. We used to go each year with our daughter. We have decided to stop because the price has increased dramatically and services have been reduced. We just can't justify going anymore. We can afford it, we choose not to. I look forward to seeing your travels in 2023!
I hate to share this, but the Blue tree resort in Lake Buena vista is the best place to stay, literally one mile fromDisney Springs, and you get a 2 bedroom condo with kitchen.
The value of anything, tangible or intangible, is what someone is willing to part with to obtain it. Yes, the prices of the souvenir merch at Disney parks are too high. No question about it. But there are certain items that I crave. I have a MASSIVE collection of dated resin Disney picture frames. We try to get a group photo when we visit the parks and I like to display those pics on a special shelf in my home. We try to get a dated frame because, well, that's what I want. They are often in the range of $30 and up, which is too much, but adding to the collection makes me VERY happy. Some trips I have been unable to locate one and believe me, on those trips, I really tried. Only twice have I purchased a picture frame that wasn't dated. They are still on the same shelf, but they stand out as unremarkable. The other thing I look for on every trip is a dated trading pin. I often buy non-dated pins as well for trading purposes. I LOVE Disney pin trading. It's fun! Other than those two things, I really don't indulge. I already have a drawer full of t-shirts, I don't need another one. I don't own a Disney hat, don't want one. I don't have any toys. I do have grandchildren and I will indulge them in their stupid trinkets because they love them, and I am never going to question that. Last trip I got them all bubble wands. Bubble wands are dumb. My grandkids had a BLAST with them, so ... money well spent.
Sad I won’t get your Disney content as much!! But I do still need to do a cruise! When are you going to do a patreon cruise, it’s what I’m waiting for LOL!!
I've never been a huge souvenir or buying person at Disney; however, I have missed the uniqueness that some stores have at the parks and at the resorts with great quality merchandise at only their location. Plus the quality isn't what it used to be.
I am 100% the same. I am a collector. Completely. Loved vinylmations and Donney and Bourke purses. We used to collect magnets and tshirts from the various resorts as we made our way around the DVCs. And we’d always get things themed to the different countries in Epcot. Now, we still do our annual trip but have found we don’t bring home much anymore.
I get it. Disney has gotten crazy with their prices. We stayed in our first value resort in November and loved it! We stayed in a LM room at AOA. Really cute. We will be back in June staying at Boardwalk. What did they do to the Boardwalk? I really miss your coffee with Jen. Talking about the Disney news and movies. Loved that but I understand evolving. What about Disney on a dime or how to save at Disney? Ways to get the best deal at Disney? I don’t know it’s just a thought.
I agree with so much of what you said. We just came back from our week long family trip (two college aged boys). Before this trip, I really wanted more DVC points (we have 150-- which works for a one bedroom at SSR or OKW -- we usually do Sunday to Friday to avoid the weekend points sometimes we'll even do a studio to do BCV or others.). I no longer want more points. Ive decided once a year is fine fo rme now. Im not ready to sell, but I want to start going other places (I travelled alot before kids, and studied abroad in college, but after having kids we really focused on Disney trips and trips to the beach). Im not sure if its the changes in Disney, or my reaching 50 years old, and just changing my interests. We had a great time, but Im just feeling once a year is definitely enough for me now (maybe even every other year, as our children age, and we may need two bedrooms).
Our deluxe resort hack is that we stay deluxe on the weekends when we are not going into the parks. (Another thing *we* aren’t spending money on is tickets for weekends and holidays). We very frequently switch mid trip to a value or moderate.
We were there in mid November. It was easy to get sit down restaurant reservations in the parks on the day. People were spending their money on Genie + and counter service food.
Deluxe resort girl, but recently stayed at Pop Century, a value resort. The room was small, but it was fine for 2 people - comfortable beds, nice shower, and clean. (But Disney could include some better toiletries - like hand lotion, and bath soap). The Skyliner is convenient for transportation, but was limited by the hours. If we needed to used a Lyft or Minnie Van to return to the resort at night. Overall, it allowed us to save money and have a trip to Disney. While, I love the deluxe resorts, I would rather be able to visit and stay at a value, as opposed to staying at home.
Not only with the quality of merch but I’ve noticed how much the rundisney medals have changed with quality. From paint chipping to the heaviness or quality feel, it’s changed! I’ve tried really hard to scale back on the merch I buy in general because where the heck will I put it all lol
Awesome Video Jenn we are locals to WDW and AP holders and agree 100% with EVERYTHING you said here. The Merch is absolute trash! Hotels are out of control and the sweet treats are expensive garbage. We love WDW but your candor is spot on Thank you for truth. All the best in 2023😊
No Intro music told me that that this was a we-need-to-chat type of video 😂 Your honesty is appreciated. We’re deluxe and DVC-interested travelers, but YIKES! Just can’t justify what Disney asks us to pay. Hoping that everything financial turns around sooner rather than later.
Excellent video Jen. I’m one of those that always stays to the end! 😉 You have echoed what my husband and I said over Christmas. We took a trip in early December to use points up, and we left Disney with this “meh” feeling. Not the feeling that we used to have. Before, as soon as we flew home, we were fine tuning our next trip. My analogy is this. Have you ever given something up because of a diet, and that’s all you thought about having? When you get to have it again you are not as satisfied as you thought you’d be. We spent all of COVID wishing on our next trip, and when it came, like I said earlier, it was just “meh”. For me, the thought of Disney is better than the actual Disney of 2023. I sound like a downer, I know. I really do enjoy Disney. I am optimistic to see how things change under Iger. I hope to see DVC members get a little love soon. We have another 40 years left of points.
I agree! I’m glad you are open and honest about your feelings about Disney. I love that your not pressuring people to buy into something they can’t afford. I totally agree that Disney has lost its creative focus especially in the new resort renovations and has become incredibly money hungry. I’m very fortunate that I am to be able to enjoy a day at Disneyland for very little money because I’m a local. I pay for my pass monthly (I actually paid in full using discounted gift cards and free gift cards using apps but I put the monthly payment in my savings account to “pay myself” back) and I don’t eat in the park if I don’t want to I bring a sandwich or eat at home partly due to needing to eat gluten free and partly due to the food prices and quality being low. I also don’t have to stay at a hotel to visit Disneyland. My trip to Disney World is my once in a lifetime splurge. I’m splurging a bit but it’s to celebrate the end of a very tough 10 years battling my disability and I am not intending on making a trip to Walt Disney World again due to the expense even staying at a value it’s more than I can justify on disability. I also am a Disneyland local and can get my Disney fix a cheaper way. I make very little money on disability and have other streams of income but they aren’t consistent. I could never afford to enjoy Disney if it weren’t for being local and my friends and family chipping in.
all star music is our go to when not using dvc. better service, cleaner rooms and quiet rooms! Broadway and Jazz section . Bus service excellent. we may be selling our dvc this spring and just booking as we go at Music.
The only thing I like to collect are the coffee mugs because I’ll use them all on a daily bases. I like the memory of what that specific trip meant based on the mug. Sentimental value. Side note: Loved the POP Century, the cupcakes are extremely overrated (so many other choices), and yes the souvenir shirts I would never wear outside of the Disney bubble.
You are spot on it all .. I only purchased the 50th D&B wallet, would’ve gotten the Disney 100th platinum D&B wallet, but they don’t plan on bringing one to the collection. More money in my pocket, yippee😂😂. Thanks so much for being so candid on this topic, definitely was needed..
I appreciate you think it might be a little off talking about as you say these expensive holidays but.. For me and I’m sure others it’s nice to escape away with you to Disney, and cruise… It breaks the monotony of every day life….. Your hair looks lovely in that new colour…. Your so right about the Disney merchandise…I only collect Beauty and the Beast things, bags pins etc.. I have a lot of stuff so I don’t get much now either. Food pictures look good but usually the taste doesn’t match… Looking forward to seeing all the new and different travel destinations and adventures 👍🇬🇧
Yeh, my issue is still the loss of Magical Express. I know they'll probably never bring it back. So the transportation is similar now as if you were going to the Swan and Dolphin. But, no trips for me in the near future.
Great video Jen! I agree with everything you said. I have some Disney collections, but I am picky about what I buy and make sure I use it even at home. I still like staying on property because of convenience, but I am a value girl. Except last year when a friend gifted me DVC points when she couldn't go at the last minute. Then it was party time at Bay Lake! I am excited to try the crusie line in 2023 (The Wish) and I even got some of your "crusie essentials" for Christmas!
Good for you! I think its very easy to get over saturated with Disney when you feel like the value is gone and Disney has been very open about being focused on their profits. Which has left a bad taste in many a mouth. I will definitely still follow you and look forward to your new adventures.
Great video, Jen! I have found that there is not a lot of Disney merch that interests me, anymore. I have passed on the last few discount offers that came in my email for Shop Disney because there was nothing the I really loved more that I love my money. 🙂 I will continue to use my DVC points, but, like you, whenever I don't use my points to stay at Disney World, I stay at a moderate or, if need be, a value resort. The value resorts are much nicer now that they have been refurbished. I am going to be taking a Disney cruise next month, but I am looking into other cruise lines, too. Disney prices are just too high for me to justify the cost of the trips, anymore. I look forward to watching whatever content you post on both of your channels, and I look forward to more of your podcasts with Liam as well as joining you on patreon . Thanks for sharing!
Love your channel. Always so thoughtful and honest. I agree regarding deluxe hotels we love the location of the beach and yacht club resorts but can no longer stomach the cost especially with the cost of park tickets. Going to Disney this week and staying at Caribbean Beach - next time I think we may try the Swan or Dolphin.
Greetings Jen. Well? Having Never been, yup its me the DW Newbie, I am very much looking forward to Finally getting there! The 2020 trip was cancelled and rescheduled for February 2023!! I am Excited and little nervous. I am excited about finally getting the chance to experience in Real Time everything I have seen on here in POV videos. Will be it a one and done for me? Will I Fall in Love with DW ? I know I've "missed out" on the the things that used to be, but there is still lot there that I am very much looking forward to. Wish me luck?
Yes! I have downgraded from deluxe to moderate and then to value as the prices got ridiculous over the past 5 years. As you say, the price doesn't warrant the quality when compared to the wider market. And even within Disney itself. My last stay was at Pop and probably my best ever. Great service (better than at higher tiers tbh) and location since you still have that Skyliner access but at a fraction of the cost of further up the line.
I have never stayed on property and have always had a lovely time and great accommodations….so I can support your plan 😆 I’ve also never found the parking to be too burdensome-but I don’t have children…🤷🏻♀️so really I’m just here to say that I support a money saving plan at one of the many nice hotels around the parks.
We have always stayed on property, but we had a disappointing experience in June at Yacht Club. That experience made us try the Swan Reserve over New Years and first week in January- just got home. We were so impressed! For less than a standard view room at Boardwalk or Yacht and Beach, we got an executive suite with an Epcot view. Service was fabulous, we felt appreciated and they cleaned our room daily!! We loved the lounge and it just felt welcoming. Bonus, we earned Marriott points!
On our Thanksgiving trip I only bought myself a reusable shopping bag. I do buy Disney items, just not at the parks. On trips I can get to the Character Warehouse I will spend on a good deal. Instead I just spend on my sanity; rental car, lodging, Genie+, Lightening Lanes etc. Oh and a budget for my kid’s spending. I have a lot of Disney merchandise and will continue to get more. It just isn’t as important as I vacation.
We've stopped spending on sit down meals. We'll do one, maybe two, per trip. But otherwise we feel the quick service (at select locations) is just as good, if not better, than the sit downs.
Loved what you said at the beginning everyone earns there money and spend on what they value. I have stayed at deluxe resort and lately have shared the cost with someone else or put money aside to afford my trip. I would be ok with one disney trip this year or one good vacation
Thank you for your insight Jen! Very helpful recommendations and important factors to consider. My last Disney trip I went ALL out so am looking forward to doing it on a more conscious budget next time.
Brilliantly honest!!! And as for the hotel rooms. They have 100% lost there charm. It is sad, the enchantment is lost. So therefore staying off property seems wiser now.
Haha yes to Disney minimalism! I just don’t feel the need for all those things! I used to go into a shop at the parks and want it all and now I easily walk away….
Awesome video with great info. “Disney Minimalist” is what I aim to be. Haven’t been to WDW in 12 years ( I was a teen) and been kinda wanting to go ( as an adult) since early 2020 but of course as we all know the world had other plans and to be honest Disney hasn’t done much to convince me. An idea for content, there are many of us struggling to visit given everything you mentioned but still kinda wanting to, so a continuation of your Fantasy Disney Vacation videos but with a “Disney Minimalist” perspective would be perfect. If you weren’t to have already owned DVC, what would be the best way to still get a Disney vacation in, without breaking the bank.
We do have a trip planned for March at Jambo House but we did get a 25% discount on a standard room. We we made that reservation there was nothing at the Swan or Dolphin.
I used to be a deluxe snob, but I stayed at Gran Destino in November and that will be our choice from now on. Spacious, clean, nice pools, good food choices, excellent bus service!
@sarairvine9622 I’ve had that conversion with Gran Destino as well after staying there on a shorter trip with older nephews. My core family doesn’t fit in Gran Destino sadly so now I have FOMO because I know what I’m missing!!
Honestly Jen, I am considering buying into DVC once the Disneyland Hotel opens. California windows to own have been almost nonexistent. The West Coast benefit is awful. But the thought of locking a price is something worth considering.
i love CS and grand destino for rundisney weekends. S&D are also nice. We Swan and dolphin for epcot festivals. i will agree with those. I've never stayed at a deluxe tho.? So
Disney had the NBA players at the GF saying this hotel isn't all that and they did not take the opportunity to improve it in quality. Deluxe resorts do not compare to a 4 Seasons, Gaylord Palms, St Regis etc.
Totally agree with you on merchandise. I have so many items from the 70's to the 90's which are amazing and of great quality. They sit in my office and I just love them as they hold such great memories. As to the last decade, I buy nothing as items are cheaply made, over priced, and have no real longevity value. I also would never buy.a cupcake from Disney.
Most of my WDW trips were once or twice a year from 1994-2005. Like you, I also realized I don't wear the Mickey Mouse shirts or hats or bags outside the parks. I hate dusting, so I didn't want the collectibles either. So I switched to getting a pressed penny or two per trip. Thirty years of collecting fits in an old mayo jar. These days I get 100% of my Disney itch scratched by watching UA-cam and have little urge to go.
Thank you, Sherri! Maybe it an age thing but I just can’t sleep at night unless I follow my gut here.
I totally get this!
Thanks for your transparency. Jen. I sadly agree with you on all points. We have loved the parks/resorts and gone many times over the past 33 years, and have noticed a gradual decline of all of the things that made it special.
Honestly, the increase in prices wouldn't bother me if the quality justified it!
Same ❤️
I stayed the week after Christmas at a Deluxe Resort 5 minutes from Sea World, $158 a night. Service was impeccable! 10 - 15 drive to Epcot. Daily housekeeping and valet parking was $35 and able to come and go as many times as necessary. No more Disney stays for me!
I can see why!
Wow do you mind sharing what hotel this was? Sounds amazing
I think that’s it for me too - the thoughtful part of it is huge! Mindless spending just because I’m there and it’s there is never smart
@@JenLefforge exactly!! Love you and your chanel btw lol!!❤️❤️
"really ridiculous for what they are" YES!!!
Yes swan and dolphin for the win! Thanks for working so hard to make, edit and post this one in the same day. Happy Sunday 😊
Exhausting! It’s why i never do it so thanks for the kind words!
Just found you binge watching ur vids enjoying them ❤
I loved this!
Been there done that DONT have the tshirt (see what I did there?$
Hi Jen, I haven’t been to the channel in awhile. I love the bangs so much!
I love your hair!
One of the few pretty snacks that I actually absolutely love is the 50th raspberry cheesecake dome with almond crust
Hi Jen! Love your videos and how you share you’re thoughts even if some may not agree- loooooooove hearing it all 🙌🙌🙌
You mentioned WDW in Jan.- I would love your opinion on going in Jan when itslow crowd time for cost savings vs going in 'low crowd' time in early Dec to experience Christmas & Christmas party.
Yes let’s hope because lately it’s just very boring and the quality has just not been there. But also yes to less stuff regardless!
@@neko-chan6145 That means the world to me. Thank you!
Great and thoughtful video Jen and excellent points. The merchandise has definitely declined and prices have gone up a lot.
I agree with everything you've said. I cherry pick my very favorite things- like chili mango dole whip!- and definitely spend less on other things I don't feel are worth the price. We are doing more non-Disney travel, too. You're right that it's ok to change your tastes over time. Thanks, Jen!
Now I want a chili mango dole whip real bad
Jen, it never ceases to amaze me how much we think exactly alike! I agreed with everything you said in this video.
In fact since February 2021 I’ve been saying “I’ve broken up with Disney…is it forever, probably not! But for now they need to work on themselves”
we stayed at swan and dolphin once, and we REALLY liked it. great location
So glad you mentioned about the merchandise. When I discovered Disneyworld… one of my favorite things was stopping in all the stores. There was sense of discovery because there were so many clever and imaginative things.
Now everything things feels homogenous and kind of boring.. I miss those days…
I also just finished my stay at Riviera.
Yes those are the words - homogenous and boring!
My one and only trip to DLP I stayed at the Raddisson Bleu and loved it!
Honestly the value just has to be there for me and lately it’s just not!
This is such a great hack! Why pay for amenities you won’t use!
The waffle is my favorite as well - just wonderful if you ask them to go light on the Nutella
We were there in mid November. It was easy to get sit down restaurant reservations in the parks on the day. People were spending their money on Genie + and counter service food.
I agree with you 100 percent. Disney is going down and they have forgotten about their most loyal customer like yourself.
All the best in 2023😊
Very good points. We just buy a magnet each time we go. ❤️😘
Team magnet!
You have echoed what my husband and I said over Christmas.
I just pretend to be enthusiastic about things I’m just….not. Thank you for watching!
I appreciate you think it might be a little off talking about as you say these expensive holidays but..
For me and I’m sure others it’s nice to escape away with you to Disney, and cruise…
It breaks the monotony of every day life…..
Your hair looks lovely in that new colour….
Your so right about the Disney merchandise…I only collect Beauty and the Beast things, bags pins etc.. I have a lot of stuff so I don’t get much now either.
Food pictures look good but usually the taste doesn’t match…
Looking forward to seeing all the new and different travel destinations and adventures 👍🇬🇧
Thank you for your honesty! Always great Insight 🙌🏼
What a lovely friend! And you will love the Wish, Sarah!
Coronado Springs is my absolute favorite non-deluxe resort but at $300+ per night the moderates have also gotten out of control!
You can buy DVC on the cheap through the resale market, I bought some points as a graduation present from college for my daughter.
Good for you! I think its very easy to get over saturated with Disney when you feel like the value is gone and Disney has been very open about being focused on their profits. Which has left a bad taste in many a mouth. I will definitely still follow you and look forward to your new adventures.
Thank you so much, Eric!
We feel the same. Prices have gone way up and quality of experience has gone down.
This exactly. Our big family trip we will be buying park tickets for five people. I’m afraid to look. 🥴
I love your insights and perspective and have missed your videos here!
Thanks, Katie!
I’ve heard this from so many!
💯 agree with you👍 The last few years we have only done resort stays as a DVC member. Thanks for sharing 😊
I think I need to stay there again because I only did once and it really was lovely. Thanks for the review!
I also am spending less on dining. Instead of one table see a day we just do 1-2 a trip.
Oh my gosh I spend on my sanity - stealing that because YES ALL DAY
We've stopped spending on sit down meals. We'll do one, maybe two, per trip. But otherwise we feel the quick service (at select locations) is just as good, if not better, than the sit downs.
We e definitely cut back!
So excited for ALL future content - Disney or not 😃 love your honestly as always 🥰🥰xx
Thank you, Joanne! I appreciate you so much!
@@JenLefforge the feeling is mutual 😍 your vlogs are a ray of sunshine xxx
Brilliantly honest!!!
And as for the hotel rooms. They have 100% lost there charm. It is sad, the enchantment is lost. So therefore staying off property seems wiser now.
This video is so refreshing! You nail the sentiments of many WDW fans.
Haha yes to Disney minimalism! I just don’t feel the need for all those things! I used to go into a shop at the parks and want it all and now I easily walk away….
And honestly I don’t need more clutter so it’s all for the best!!
Right?! And for the savings you could just Lyft or Uber of transportation is the issue
So
Happy New Year, Jen!
They’re just not good those cupcakes. I want them to be. They’re just not.
