    The weak plastic gear wears out over time and can be replaced for very little money. Don't let the dealer quote you $4,000 USD for a new transfer case. If you're experiencing any of the following, you may need to replace your transfer case gear:
    *Brake, ABS, and 4x4 traction control lights on - sometimes intermittently
    *If you hear the trademark clicking coming from under the car when you turn it off
    *Scanning the car shows BMW specific trouble code 5F39
    *Unusually poor gas mileage as a result of transfer case lock up
    To scan your BMW you will need a BMW specific scan tool that will allow you to access the codes in the transmission and other various computer modules, a generic OBD-II scanner will NOT let you access all of the systems. I recommend the Creator C310 for its ease of use and because it is very inexpensive. Buy yours here: amzn.to/2YubmBh
    New updated gear: amzn.to/3hNjqXO
    New transfer case motor: amzn.to/3hNjqXO
    BMW Transfer case lifetime fluid: amzn.to/28sRAV0
    Once complete, I also recommend replacing your transfer case fluid. This fluid change is often overlooked, but doing a change will help extend the life of your transfer case. I advise using only Genuine BMW fluid for this change, DTF1: amzn.to/2EpVR6D which is part number 83-22-2-409-710 also known as TF0870

    I remember the first time that gear went out a couple years ago I think now. I watched your video a few times and sure enough you were a %100 correct. When I pulled out the gear at first it wasn’t really that bad, but just bad enough to through a code apparently. I’ve been plagued with the X5 4.4, so I got really good at fixing my own issues, thanks to you sir. We all appreciate the guidance 👍🏻

    Great video! I'm nearing 179k miles and mine just failed on me. Took it to the dealer and they said exactly what others have said (quoted me for $3k saying it's the transfer case). Definitely going to purchase a gear and DIY.

      @xiayu27 2 роки тому +1

      @@s.medina3661 Nope! I was successful in replacing the actuator gear which did show signs of wear. I took the vehicle into BMW to get the hookup on diagnosing/resetting the codes. They didn't go away and the Transfer case ended up getting replaced anyway. Total cost was around $4500 and since mine is a manual X3, it took over a month to find the right transfer case to match. I'm at 193k miles now.

      @@xiayu27 but the dealer erased the codes related to the transfer case for you when you took it in after you replaced the gear? Im guessing the codes came back? I wonder if replacing the entire actuator motor would result in the same scenario.

    • @xiayu27
      @xiayu27 2 роки тому

      @@s.medina3661 Correct, and I wondered this too! The actuator motor itself could have been an easier swap than cracking it open and swapping the gear itself out. I took the lazy way out and let them keep the vehicle to do the work rather than taking it back and ordering an actuator motor to swap.

    We have a 2011 BMW X3 xDrive28i and it is making a clicking/grinding noise from underneath the car. We took it to a reputable BMW mechanic and he says that the clicking is coming from the transfer case and that the entire transfer case needs to be replaced. I am dubious that the issue is this severe, and mentioned your video and the fix and he indicated that your fix is only for vehicles made before 2010, our vehicle is 2011. Before I spend $6000.00, I am thinking about doing this fix that you are talking about. Do you know if this will work on a 2011 and if it will, which parts do I need to purchase to fix the vehicle? Bad enough the car is out of operation they want you to pay thousands for their design flaws. This is unacceptable. People shouldn’t have to learn how to fix BMW’s mistakes that they won’t owned up to especially for the amount of money these cars costs to begin with.
