@1Lo1L if you see a mysterious man at your door in a peanut costume with a jar of extra chunky peanut butter, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Barricade all doors and windows and call your local authorities.
I remember this. I got sick for a week straight with intense diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, fever, and couldn't even hydrate because my stomach was so raw that anything we tried to put in came right back out
@@nevaehhamilton3493 Yeah, and I thought I was going to die for a couple days there, too. The first thing I was able to get into my stomach and stay there was orange gatorade that was frozen and broken up into a slushy, and it actually hurt to have something in my stomach. after dealing with the salmonella. The whole thing was pretty damn traumatic.
I hope you and your family got some kind of compensation for that I can’t even imagine how horrible that must have been the closest experience I personally have to that was catching H1N1 when I was 4 but that likely wasn’t as bad since it was gone in a few days
As a Texan, I can confirm that Jim Adler is a LEGEND down here. Seriously, we get his ads all the time, this one radio show I tune into has a "Texas hammer game" to win tickets to concerts, hell, a few kids from back when I was in middle school tried convincing the people at the America table for Heritage Day that Jim Adler was the President of the United States. It's INSANE.
I remember asking my grandpa for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when this was happening and he instead made me a butter and jelly sandwich because “the peanut butter was going to kill me”
During a big cookie batter salmonella scandal. My mother had eaten some of the cookie batter, she had a habit of eating the raw dough. She ended up getting sick at the time of what we thought was the flu. I, being 14 and the oldest tried my best to get her fever down. Suddenly one day I come home from school and she was slightly unresponsive. Her fever was super high. I ran to her boyfriend who had been home early that day to take her to the hospital. He noticed her fever hadn't gone down either and was worried as well. I ended up taking ice packs to try and cool her off. Learned that from her nurse ramblings and saw it in a movie where the people used ice bags to cool down some guys body temp to escape a monster. They rushed her into the ER where we learned she had a brush with a deadly case of salmonella. She ended up getting permanent brain damage from the high fevers. Nothing too severe, she has really bad short term memory and struggles to remember things at times she would've been so much of a expert in before.
@@karakattankurai she's actually doing really well. But her memory is very bad these days, as it's happened years ago. I'm 25 now, she's 60. I want to get her looked at for anything like Alzheimers or dementia. It doesn't run in our family but I read an article how early damage to the brain may lead to it Otherwise she's still doing her thing.
I remember this commercial from when I was 6. Everyone in my school said ALL peanut butter was contaminated and I came home crying thinking my PB&J JIF sandwich was going to make me sick. I don't miss the lack of access to information from back then
As someone who grew up with dogs and cats that enjoyed having peanut butter as a treat, I feel extremely bad for the ones that people unknowingly infected with Salmonella...
actually, dogs and cats very rarely get salmonella since their digestive tracts are built to handle raw meat. the animal would have to be young, elderly, or immunocompromised for there to even be a chance of contracting salmonella. they’d also be unable to contract it from peanut butter bc there wouldn’t be enough of the bacteria present
Those legal ads are always haunting whenever I hear that music i genuinely fear someone’s about to kill me or some horror movie monster is about to break into my house
My family had one of these, we still keep the jar. None of us ever got sick from the peanut butter. We heard about the recall, so threw out the peanut butter and washed the jar to keep at first, just in case, now we just keep it as a momento. We never knew how serious it could have been. No idea why we were all entirely unaffected even having ate most of the jar.
Also as a Texan those Jim Adler (THE TEXAS HAMMER!!) commercials from the late 90s early 2000s were terrifying , they used that same soundtrack in almost all of them and they led to so many sleepless nights for young me
I can totally see Adler seeing a Goldwater Law ad on tv, hearing Ominous (yes, that's actually what this nightmare fuel is called) and thinking: "this song makes me feel like Michael, Jason and Freddy are all standing at my bedroom windows- MY ADS NEED IT TOO!!"
If you or anyone you know has lost sleep or been affected by the commercials of Jim Adler. (The Texas Hammer) Call Jim Adler. (The Texas Hammer) I'm not from Texas so I don't know exactly how his commercials sound but you get the point I hope. Lol
@@wolfgangervin2582 you’re not alone I heard knightline legal had something similar but with medicine and every time that ad would come on everytime it would come on during king of queens (which while I was watching while I was sick in bed it was summer of ‘15) and when it came on I looked for the remote to mute the tv and no luck. Yikes!
He reminds me so much of "The Alabama Hammer" Mike Slocumb. As a matter of fact...I think they had a legal battle because their commercials were so similar, lol.
Honestly. to me the most disturbing part of that ad is the chipper voices. Like it's not "you or somebody you know may have potentially died" and more like "you just won a $1000000 and a lambo in a lottery"
I was 7 when the recall happened and it freaked me out so bad I refused to eat peanut butter for YEARS. Like, until high school. My family didn't even buy peter pan, we were a jif family
I was paranoid back then also watching the news as it was happening telling us which peanut butter to avoid giving us that number every time we went grocery shopping I would check the that no peanut butter had that serial number
This just unearthed a memory I’d totally forgotten about until now. I remember in 2008 or 9 when my mom took me grocery shopping and told me to grab peanut butter across the isle. I grabbed Peter Pan because I liked the logo, and she told me to put it back because it wasn’t a good brand and had me grab a different one. When I asked her what she meant and insisted that it looked good, she said it made some people sick eating it, and she didn’t feel good buying it. Until know I never realized that my life was touched by the Peanut Butter outbreak of ‘07…
i remember this, my family was full freak out mode and going through the cupboards even though 90% of my family was allergic to nuts except me the hysteria was unreal
I remember seeing so many lawsuit ads like that Peter Pan recall ad back in the 2000s. They were all so eerie to me. Any time there was a big recall some lawyer would swoop in and make some serious looking ad, or if something was revealed to be toxic like the mesothelioma ones.
I used to have Peter Pan peanut butter a lot as a kid because I would eat just peanut butter sandwiches with milk. Thankfully my mom caught the news early about the salmonella outbreak and immediately threw out any Peter Pan peanut butter we had in the pantry. Whether it was the regular peanut butter or the honey peanut butter. This outbreak happened when I was in middle school. We avoided having Jiff, Peter Pan, and great value peanut butter for about 2 years after it happened. Just gotten Kroger peanut butter or Skippy till then. My family makes jokes about it now but back then it was pretty scary.
About two years ago I got sick from recalled peanut butter (I think it was Jif?). It was most certainly salmonella; I had the worst nausea in my life and I ended up going to the hospital at like one in the morning and didn’t get home until I got two bags of saline pumped into me. I also experienced the worst headache of my life; I couldn’t stand any amount of light whatsoever. Literally thought I was gonna die.
There was also a kinder recall either last year or in 2022. The specific type of chocolate that was contaminated wasn’t available in our country, but a family member that lived in france and came to visit brought a pack with him. Everyone ate a piece or two, and we found out about the whole salmonella thing minutes later. Thankfully, our pack’s number didn’t match the one we saw in the news article and we were perfectly fine.
@@damlatorun6756yeah salmonella outbreak in france, germany, belgium and the Netherlands. All my local stores got rid of all their kinder eggs. Was pretty horrifying as i often bought kinder stuff.
Daym I remember this!! Peanut butter just disappeared from my house, and my daily PB&J school lunch was off the table. At the time we couldn't afford lunch meat or school lunches*, so my new daily lunch for the next few months would end up being a -PB&- J sandwich. You can only throw so much jam on to pieces of bread before you start going insane! 😅 --- *Our School district went overboard on budget cuts, so the new maximum income qualification level was decreased so much that impoverished families no longer qualified for free or reduced school lunches. It was very sketchy, but was eventually walked back after both parents and teachers started complaining, and ultimately 💩 hit the fan!
I lived near Sylvester, GA at the time. The Facility was on 101 Seabrook Drive. It closed in 2020, because Con Agra sold Peter Pan Peanut Butter to Post. The Peanut Corp of America recall was far worse and widespread that the Peter Pan recall, because it affected over 100 companies who bought the peanut butter from PCA. Kellogg was one of their biggest customers, in fact the owner of PCA, Stuart Parnell, didn't care if the peanut butter was laced with salmonella (the strain that causes typhoid), and shipped it out anyway, to keep the Kellogg account.
You know saw mills gear down between shifts and stations get cleaned, on the weekend C shift cleans, in BC sawmills still blow up, but ignoring that, imagine how much less of this stuff would happen if food factories did the same.
This honestly doesn't surprise me. It really depends on which factory you're looking at. But speaking from experience; I can confirm that some food production factories are kind of lax when it comes to safety regulations. From what I've seen some of those regulations aren't as heavily enforced unless it's an actual allergen.
I got a bottle of the peter pan stuff, it made me really sick (thankfully not enough for a hospital trip)- couldn't even finish my sandwich before my immune system went on alert. Funnily enough it was also expired by a whole year. So they kept it on the shelf long after it was recalled. One of only 2 times I've demanded a refund on food- the other was when I got a bag of gummy bears that reeked of and tasted like ammonia. After the peanut butter made me sick, I became anal about checking expiration dates. I didn't learn about the recall until last year.
I used to work at a restaurant and one of the most important things is First In First Out. So you put the newer products in the back so the older products get bought first and avoid things going bad. My second job was a grocery store and literally none of the stockers cared about this and would place the new products just in front of the older products and I imagine the people who pull from the back to get the “newer” products were more likely to grab something expired. They would do it the correct way for the cold items but the boxes and peanuts butters do expire too
I have a small recollection of this. I remember vomiting and it was due to the peanut butter. I have not, knowingly at least, eaten Peter Pan peanut butter since. It's been about 17 years
as an avid lover of peanut butter I didn't even know they could get salmonella and frankly that scares me. I was born to early to actually get affected by this outbreak but still, knowing that if I was born maybe even a year earlier I could have been affected is terrifying. I sincerely hope all who have been affected are doing much better.
The fact that the contamination even happened to begin with is a sign of complete disregard for food safety, but the thing that REALLY makes this horrific is that the ceo KNEW about the contamination but had the peanuts shipped out anyway. Nine people died because of this.
Something similar happened a year or so from Quaker Oats, they just recently permanently shut down the plant that the contamination was in. It mainly affects granola bars and all their oat squares cereal. My mom loved that cereal, and probably got salmonella from it, she would get sick some times about a few months before the recall occurred, then after seeing the recall things started to add up. All those times she got sick was probably from the cereal, she would eat it very often, sometimes daily, she loved it. Thankfully she never got hospitalized when she was sick, but she misses the cereal as she immediately returned every box she had left to Meijer's.
@@aforest3889This is not the ConAgra recall. It’s the Peanut Corp of America Peanut Butter recall from 2005, it was due to negligence and dirty factory conditions. Thankfully PCA PB was only used in the institutional food market, making it not as widespread, but unfortunately this included prisons and schools.
Store I work in recently took down all of our Quaker granola bars for a salmonella recall, been fully down for a few months at this point. Noticed lately that we haven't been getting in any of their oatmeal squares cereal either, though not sure if that's connected in a way or a production issue since I haven't heard any recall on those as well, but from what I've looked up it is part of the same recall.
I don't know how overplayed the topic is these days But one thing I'd love to see Ray make a video on is the ひとがた (Hitogata) It would be a dream come true to see his take on the topic
I remember this, I was in middle school at the time. There wasn't another truly frightening or stressful food thing in my experience until like five years later when Hostess went out of business and you couldn't get their products anymore.
As someone who lives in San Antonio, I thought I forgot about that whole Adler commercial until now. Feels strange that all this happened in my lifetime tbh.
I've gotten salmonella before many times (from eating raw cookie dough) and now i get no symptoms and feel fine. I do not recommend eating raw cookie dough since im lucky that my body isn't effected by it, but other people can end up in the hospital.
@@inserthahafunniusername9656 Yeah i know there's safe cookie dough, i had it before, its just younger me just wanted cookie dough when making stuff lol.
what's really interesting(?) about salmonella that most people don't know is that you're more likely to get sick from eating uncooked flour than you are from consuming raw eggs! the more you know 💫
Great video! As a kid, I was always cautious about everything due to PSA’s and recalls but the hidden dangers also peaked my interest and ever since I’ve had these recall histories as a neurodivergent hyperfixation, especially when it comes to investigations so this was actually nice to see although what happened was awful in the least
Greetings from the United Kingdom! Just after Easter 2006, Cadbury's chocolate was recalled due to salmonella over here (and I assume every other country where said brand of chocolate is sold) so when my parents and I visited Florida in February the following year, I got deja vu when watching a news report on this PB recall of yours! Overall, that trip to Florida of ours was actually my worst: having started college around the time of our Cadbury recall, the 10 months from my college start to our Florida trip, I had gotten better at looking after myself and my parents had trouble adjusting. While we were going around Disney World, they were telling me to "watch out" and "be careful" every 3 seconds! They still dragged me onto rides I didn't want to go on (thankfully no wet rides, unlike previous trips!) and (as I wasn't as good back then at always having a cellphone on me) the one time I actually got lost while we were in the Magic Kingdom, they scolded me when they found me and, even though I was NINETEEN YEARS OLD at the time, they told me of some 3 year old (NOT Madeline McCann, who didn't go missing until a few months later) who went missing and was never found again (my Dad was told of this by a patient of his)! HONESTLY? Telling me about a TODDLER's disappearance as an excuse for doubting your TEENAGE son's ability to fend for himself? I wasn't as good at looking after myself back then as I am now, but I was better at looking after myself than I was when I started college almost a year earlier! It didn't help that my huge hatred for Dora The Explorer was causing me to shout and rant every time I saw another park guest with a Dora item, whether a push chair, backpack or whatever else! Speaking of Dora: when we went to Universal Studios in February 2003, my parents and brother (bro left for college sometime after this trip) spotted a park employee in a Dora costume and all 3 of them, as a team, successfully kept me from seeing Dora, as they were worried I'd beat her up! I wouldn't have, I would've just yelled "Where's Swiper when you need him?"!
It was a well made Advertisement to warn about the Contamination, I was a Toddler when it was happening, I was born 2004 And this Advertisement came out 2006, that's 2 years 8:23 Nice, Yume Nikki barracks settlement
1:35 For some reason, my mind was completely convinced that the sentence was going to be "The CDC raided the facility', like this was some terrorist threat that was needing to be neutralized. The videos actual script makes more sense though.
God I can't tell you when I watched that scene in the movie, it was very, very irritating. Not sure why it wasn't removed before, but it wasn't until one of his friends ate one part of the bacteria molded cheese and go from there. Gross.
@@kirbykirbykirby. Yep, one of the movie characters literally ate the cheese by the bullies who challenged him to eat it, and thus, even though everyone avoided the one who touched it, wel, one of his friends stuck up for him, and both The wimpy kid and his friend decide that the cheese touch is full of crap. So even if the middle schoolers avoided them, the wimpy kid sucked it up and supported his friend that ate it and cried (yes I'm not joking, that's how the first movie of the first book ended).

for majority of this video was thinking, “damn, this is a really weirdly intense arg.” and then i realized it was real. I’ve never been more confused in my life.
So i didn’t grow up in Texas and I was very young when this happened, but growing up on the east coast we had this law firm called Goldwater Law and they used the same music in their advertisements and had very similar ones for different recalls. They would mostly air at night on Nickelodeon due to their “Nick at Nite” block. These commercials would wake me up out of a sound sleep and I’d usually come running down the hall with my hands over my ears to drown out the music and I’d head into my parents bedroom until I could hear the “Now back to the show” messages after the commercial breaks. Additionally most of the recalls they covered weren’t for food, but for medical equipment such as Hip Replacement, Hernia Mesh and Ice Cold Physical Therapy Machines to name a few. The little high pitched and distorted ping sound at the end would terrify me the most.
I remember this happening when I was eating Austin’s cheddar double cheese crackers and I had people freaking out even the teacher that I was eating them when they didn’t understand that I was eating cheese version and not peanut butter version from my snack
Hey my comment on the jim addler ad was in the video. Thank you for making a video on this, i still remember this recall very clearly. Im surprised it hasnt been brought up more often considering just how major it was. I had a ridiculously close call with this recall and im lucky that it was caught in time before it caused any major damage to me or other members of my family. That close call is why ive always been so fascinated with this case. Also TL'DR on my story and comment. My grandma had a 2111 case, it was used once for peanut butter chicken/chicken mole(therefore cooked). We were watching the news and the recall was mentioned. The container was found in the cabinet and shortly tossed.

My aunt spent over a week making 600 buckeyes (homemade peanut butter truffles dipped in chocolate that are popular in Ohio) from scratch right before the alerts went out. She checked her jars and had to throw all 600 of them away. No one got sick and idk if she ever got reimbursed for the monetary loss. She refuses to buy that brand of PB to this day.
I thought I was the only person who remembered this happening, I was only 6 and there were newspaper cartoons of people dropping dead after eating peanut butter and everything. It was crazy.
this really gives me content farm vibes. I don’t know but how the video is presented it makes me think of channels who pump out video after video. it’s probably just the editing style.
It's definitely giving off SunnyV2 and Internet Anarchist content farm vibes with the uses of stock footage, text highlighting, lighting, animatics, and text.

That stinks man, hope she's better tho

actually, dogs and cats very rarely get salmonella since their digestive tracts are built to handle raw meat. the animal would have to be young, elderly, or immunocompromised for there to even be a chance of contracting salmonella. they’d also be unable to contract it from peanut butter bc there wouldn’t be enough of the bacteria present

Jif got recalled last year for the same reason
i was looking into the peter pan thing and i found out jif was also recalled around 1-2 years ago for salmonella too
same with my little brother 😭😭
This just unearthed a memory I’d totally forgotten about until now. I remember in 2008 or 9 when my mom took me grocery shopping and told me to grab peanut butter across the isle. I grabbed Peter Pan because I liked the logo, and she told me to put it back because it wasn’t a good brand and had me grab a different one. When I asked her what she meant and insisted that it looked good, she said it made some people sick eating it, and she didn’t feel good buying it. shit happens and things get recalled constantly. the world definitely isnt perfect
I remember romaine getting contaminated, and salads disappeared from McDonald's menu.

*Our School district went overboard on budget cuts, so the new maximum income qualification level was decreased so much that impoverished families no longer qualified for free or reduced school lunches.

"The hell you mean there's a Peter Pan Peanut Butter alert?!"
They would do it the correct way for the cold items but the boxes and peanuts butters do expire too
Damn u got a quick system
I have a small recollection of this. I remember vomiting and it was due to the peanut butter. I have not, knowingly at least, eaten Peter Pan peanut butter since. It's been about 17 years
This is the first of I've heard of a peanut butter outbreak
Whaddya mean a Peter Pan Peanut Butter Alert?
Recall should have happened with steel battalion from 2012, anyone else recall that?
No
as an avid lover of peanut butter I didn't even know they could get salmonella and frankly that scares me.
@@aforest3889 corporate greed at it's worst.
Im from 2005 so I probably wasnt eating peanut butter then. Even so we didnt buy that brand

I remember hearing about this on the radio when I was in kindergarten!! It's one of those things I never forgot about for some reason
That's why I only eat Superman peanut butter from the 1980s.
I remember this happening when I was eating Austin’s cheddar double cheese crackers and I had people freaking out even the teacher that I was eating them when they didn’t understand that I was eating cheese version and not peanut butter version from my snack
as someone who is allergic to peanuts, I see this as an absolute win
So this is what Tourettes Guy was confused about...
We had another one in 2022. Even if it wasn't as bad as 2007, it still was scary.

She checked her jars and had to throw all 600 of them away. No one got sick and idk if she ever got reimbursed for the monetary loss. She refuses to buy that brand of PB to this day.

I recently learned that most american-sold coffee brands contain mold, being the below-standard for foreign distributors. America takes what gets rejected. Maybe that's another topic you can cover, if you haven't already.
