  • Cast Iron hunting in the wild. There is a little old General Store in Sanford Virginia that has been converted into an antique and collectables store. I did a drive by stop in to the store and discovered a lot of cast iron skillets and a carbon steel frying pan dating back to before 1928 that was for sale.
If you're driving down the eastern shore of Virginia or DELMARVA peninsula you won't go wrong stopping in and saying hello to this fantastic couple that runs the store. The charm and kindness is shown every time I've been in. The store is located on Saxis Road on the way out to Saxis Island.
Bonus feature, there is also a vinegar bath restoration and seasoning of a 100 year old pan at the end of the video.
    Restoration starts at 5:20

Awesome find, glad to see those old skillets have a second chance of a long cooking life.

Those were some good finds! Awesome how the vinegar cleaned the carbon steel pan. Thanks for the tip on using coffee filters! I've been using paper towels and had the lint issues also. I'll be switching to coffee filters for sure!

A hotel chef in Canada showed me a trick for cooking over easy and sunny side eggs. When you crack it into the pan, a grade A egg will have the raised albumin around the yolk. Right at the edge, give it a poke to break the membrane and tip the pan to drain then scrape the white back to shape a perfect round. That lets you get the whites cooked but keep the yolks runny.

Wow, what a great concept, "partial" re-seasoning, I can't believe I overlooked the notion entirely all these years. I love collecting and the history of Cast Iron. I too always loved the old storied patina on the outside, but sure never wanted to eat it. Who knows what could be in 2nd and 3rd hand pieces? So off it had to come if it was to be used. I never even THOUGHT of just stripping the inside like that. I think that is just an absolute WIN - WIN! The best of both worlds. Such a simple yet elegant solution, I owe you for the sweet tip. Hey, you taught a man to fish today, so to speak!!

If you have a self cleaning oven, put the pan face down on the rack and that crud on the outside turns to ash. Takes several hours though.

Is that small one a BS&R, instead of a Lodge?

Your #3 at 3:19 I don't think it's a no notch Lodge. If it were a Lodge it would have the size number on top of the handle. I think it's a Red Mountain series Birmingham Stove & Range. If it is a BSR it'll have a ridge down the underside of the handle. I live in SE TN. so I see a lot of Lodges and BSRs in part because they aren't branded. People tend to keep the branded pieces. That was a great find, the hunt is half the fun.

@@TeachaMantoFish Have you assembled an electrolysis tank yet? If ya haven't it's worth doing and extremely easy. Mine is just an 18 gallon tote w/ stainless steel sheet metal down both sides. Stainless is easy to clean and with the low amperage we use it doesn't give off fumes. Anything under 20 amps is more than safe, I just use 6 amps. I use 1 tablespoon per gallon of Arm & Hammer Super Laundry Soda, you can use more but the battery charger will suffer. The other cleaning methods aren't as good as an e-tank. There are a lot of videos on how to build one, it's all I use. They remove rust and crud from carbon steel also.

@@turdferguson5300 I’ve done a couple of videos and iterations, this is my latest set up. It is the best way in my opinion as well.

@@TeachaMantoFish I had just discovered and subscribed to your channel, I should have checked you other videos. That is a very nice e-tank. There's something about taking something 60-100+ years old and making it new that I really like. I'm a cast iron nerd so keep em coming. :)
I had my best day yet hunting yesterday. I found a 3 legged #8 gate mark pot $20, a gate mark muffin pan $15, a #8 Wagner Sidney O, Lodge 3 notch #7 and #6, all in good condition for $10 each. I think my wife is planning an intervention. lol
