    Comment from @Smartcap addressing the Pros and Cons for anyone having the same issues: Thanks for your review. You bring up some good points, both pro and con, and it's great feedback to receive. We would like to respond to some of the points you make, in hopes of helping those that may be experiencing the issues you bring up. 1. Leaks: The cap is designed to NOT leak in normal weather conditions, including normal rain. If you are experiencing leaks of any type (through from a gap between the bed rail and cap, windows or leaks in the Positive Pressure Air vent, please contact us at Support.NA@RSiSmartCap.com. 2. The Universal Roof Rails are designed to be "universal" and come shipped with M8 hardware. If you have accessories that mount with M6 hardware, you can purchase them from most hardware stores and grind the weld nuts to fit. 3. For those interested in dual function latches, we are coming to market in Q1 2022 with retrofittable latches for you to purchase that will let you open it from the inside and are freeze resistant. Please contact us at Support.NA@RSiSmartCap.com and we will put you on a release list and notify you when they are available. We do hope that you'll take us up on our offer to assist with your leaking problem. We think you'll be much happier with your SmartCap with our assistance.

      Yes the water leaks which means it also isnt dust proof. Plus the fact that you can’t open it from the inside means you cant use it as a camper. maybe it isnt intended to be one. but if you cant keep stuff inside dry so what use does it have? i’m disappointed coz its build quality is supposedly better than the regular fiber glass toppers. might as well reconsider Leer or A.r.e.

    Thank you for the review. That hole on the roof is more trouble than benefit, I guess in Africa and Australia they have much more dusty tracks, I've seen other manufacturers do the same, but I would definitely prefer a topper without the hole/filter/contraption on the roof. I’ve had an RSI on my 2020 Ram Rebel for 18 months. Leaked at first at the small windows, after contacting RSI they quickly shipped me new gaskets, easy fix, hasn’t leaked since. Apparently the supplier of the windows stacked the windows in such a way that it damaged the gaskets. That’s been corrected.
    Regarding sleeping inside, you can pop the locks, lock them so they don’t close on you and you can climb in the cap, pull the gate and window closed behind you and bungee or strap the window closed and someone can’t lock you in. Does that make sense? So it can be done…
    Love the cap, needed the weight capacity as I have a roof top tent, I use a Front Runner rack on top of the cap. Looks amazing, everything works like expected and I’m a fussy person.

  • @vandogg14
    @vandogg14 2 роки тому +9

    Alright, as someone who installs these and many other caps/covers daily. No cap will ever be %100 water tight. The carwash scenario should be no indication to how watertight a cap or cover is since you're literally shooting pressurized water from all angles. Also %90 of trucks out there have huge gaps under the factory bedrail caps. Toyotas have a huge gap at the header removable bulkhead and under the bed rail caps. RSI did drop the ball on the lock scenario not being able to open from the inside (word is RSI is working on new locks) bit if push comes to shove the locks come apart with literally one Philips #3 screw so I would keep one in your bed just in case. I also install a bunch of fiberglass caps and I'd rather put and RSI on my truck over a fiberglass cap just due to the fact that the fiberglass is still mostly hand made or finished and the quality level substantially dropped during and after the pandemic shutdowns.

    Nice review. I have the Evo Sport on my 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road long bed. I have had similar is issues with leaks. I have had it on my truck for less than a year. It has not be exposed to severe weather. No snow or ice or extreme heat. It is mostly kept in my garage. I contacted support and they wanted me to jump through a few small hoops to get my issue resolved. I felt it was easier to fix the problems myself. First the roof top positive pressure vent leaked when it rained and when I washed my truck. Especially driving in heavy rain. To me there is no fixing the design. Holes in your roof are a bad thing. So, I completely sealed it off. I did a neat job of it too. RSI should get rid of the vent all together. I think it is just a gimmick and a bad design as well. The sliding windows leaked. After examining them to engineer a fix ( I did come up with some good ideas.), I realized that the windows were installed upside down. I switched the driver side window with the passenger side window. This enabled me to install them right side up. There are about three weep holes in the sliding window seals. They were on the bottom and they leaked. After switching them around, they are now at the top and now they don't leak. Also, the side door seals itself leaked as well. I discovered that the seal did not leak between the door and the seal itself, but rather water was getting behind the seal through capillary action were it slips over the lip on the body of the Smart Cap at the top. The water would then run down inside the channel of the seal and leak inside at the bottom inside. I removed the seal and filled the channel of the seal with Sikaflex sealant and reinstalled the seals on both sides. So far I have had now more leaks. I can sleep in the back of my truck with Smart Cap. I just have to remember to lock the locks in the open position so someone can't come by and latch them and I would not be able to get out. I made a handle on the inside of the back door and a locking device so I can lock myself in while camping if I need to sleep in the back. I also drilled a small hole in the back of both of the locks at the tale gate so I could use a pin punch to open the latch from the inside, should I forget to lock the locks in the open position and someone were to come by and close them and lock me inside. I use a small rubber plug for the holes I drilled to keep the water out. They are easily removed should I need to open the lock from the inside. The paint quality is not the best. I am not sure if it is powder coated or not. I assembled my Smartcap in my garage and I got some deet on the paint because I had some on my legs because of mosquitos. The deet had damaged the finish on my paint. The paint was actually coming off. It was only on one section so I was able to repaint that section. I bought the Smartcap because I loved the look of it and the design style. I also loved that it was made of steel and that it was satin black. I love the gull wing-like side window/doors. I am not happy with the issues that I had with it and I grieved over it. I am still glad that I bought it though. Only because I am FAA licensed aircraft mechanic and I have engineering background (layman) and I know I can fix the problems myself. I also did not want a fiberglass truck cap. For the price of the Smartcap, I wish I did not have this many issues. I wonder if Alu-cab makes a better product. Unless you are able to understand and fix the problems yourself I would not recommend Smartcap. I hope Smartcap fixes these problems and also gets ride of the roof vent.

    Is there any downsides to adding a bead of silicone when assembling to avoid any potential risk of leaking? Seems that the biggest issue is the gaskets and whether they are undamaged during assembly but a $5 tube of silicone might avoid issues over time with the gaskets weakening. Also have you heard of anyone insulating them yet? Was thinking of insulating the metal areas and maybe doing ceramic tint on the glass areas.

    I just wish this had the small windows on the sides if for no other reason that to allow for cooling of the interior on hot summer days. And beyond that, these solid metal side windows are clearly more secure than the glass. But if the rear window is still glass, does that really matter, the glass side windows do look sharp.

  • @Buck0seven

    RSI support has been great for me. I had leaking sliding windows. To resolve, they sent me new, slightly thicker, window seals that resolved most of the leaking. I still have occasional minor dripping in wind driven rain but not enough to get my gear wet. I have issues with the latches freezing in cold temperatures which is a little annoying. Thankfully that hasn’t impacted me too much. I bought their crossbars and it took months for me to receive them. When they finally arrived, it was missing the supports for the crossbars. That took another couple months to get shipped from NZ. That was a bit frustrating and I haven’t used them yet. I use the canopy for storage when camping and access from the side doors is exceptional. I have had the cap on my 2020 Tacoma LB since September 2020. If I was in the market for a cap now, I would buy the RSi SmartCap all over again.

    Yea saw this looked cool. Watched review and yeah I knew it was expensive. 4k for leaks alone is deal breaker for me. Then add freezing locks (snows in Utah I'd like my locks to work rain or snow) and you can't open from inside. that's just flat out safety issue imo. Think they got design looks down... and that's it.

    Thank you for the review. I def will not buy one. For that price it should be flawless. I will ask if there is another option that may be a little better? Also, I took a military class for public speaking years ago and everyone has a "crutch" word or saying. During my 3 minute presentation I said "um" over 30 times. Yours is "you know". On your next video, rewatch it before you post and you will see what I mean. We all do it. I since moved on from "um" to another phrase :) just a little constructive critism from an old army vet. Please do not be insulted. It is just a helpful tip. I do wish this topper as a little better. I wouldn’t trade my Smartcap for anything even if you paid me. Pros: It’s build quality, strength and aesthetics is unmatched in the industry. And their customer service is fantastic. My Smartcap was professionally installed by a local shop and they did a good job. I have since installed lighting. It didn’t come with a wiring harness for the brake light but just yesterday they sent one to me, free of charge.
    Cons: The only thing I don’t like is that the positive air vent thingy leaks when I take the truck through a high pressure car wash. One of the side windows leaks a little bit, not much. Some black silicone will fix that. And there was a slight gap at the back, maybe the installers didn’t lower it far enough. A bead of black silicone fixed that too. Last con…I live in a snowy location in winter. The Smartcap’s lock mechanism freezes up in winter temperatures if it gets wet. Fortunately there is an easy fix for that too, and Smartcap has been sending out the fix to its customers. Overall, I’m very happy with my Smartcap.
