“No one was around, except me” - One of the sadder elements to this story is that Smudger didn’t even know that Duke was there with him, only a couple of yards away, locked away inside his shed. I wonder if his spectre witnessed the events of Sleeping Beauty when Duke was finally recovered from his shed. Seeing that they came back for Duke while nobody lifted a finger for him.
When I first saw that sence I cried since I knew duke did really care for smudger but he was still sick of him at the same time. I was extremely sad about that when he found out that smudger was dead he would’ve likly felt guilty for not being a good mentor
I'd have to agree, most of them consider Smudger as a total douche bag, even when he said, "Listen Dukie, who worries about a few spills." He was probably just fed up as in, his construction was absolute shite.
This is a good telling of Smudger's story, being rushly built is another good reason why he kept on derailing off the tracks and that ending of Smudger being dead is a great way for him. Apart from the VRS where Smudger was shipped to Japan and others saying he's still alive and being rebuilt into Bertram are all great stories. But something about Smudge being a spirit sounds like a good idea to me. Who knows, maybe he'll be a spirit guardian like Proteus or a vengeful spirit...
I can see Smudger, after a lifetime of misfortune, would be a guardian spirit in death. He said in this story that he couldn't feel anything. Without an ounce of anger left, he would consider his best option is to look after what was left of the railway so that he might be able to atone for his mistakes and could have his sense of purpose restored.
"Sad", is the only word I can use to describe his life. Being rushly built. kept having problems. being blamed for his problems, and no one to care to understand his perspective. developing a temper from being blamed. Then, been brushed to the side because he could only be used as a generator. Engines ignoring him while passing through. Then being forgotten, forever. Then being left to die, without anyone (except Duke) to truly remember your life. It reminds me of people passing by people in poverty. You either ignore them completely, as if they weren't there. Or you give them a grin, a head nod, or any way to show you acknowledge that they are there.
After that ending, I think there should be another audio, basically here's how the plot goes out. Duke will wake up in a dream, he ends up in his old home, "The Mid Sodor" he'll be the only engine there. Then he'll hear a faint whistle, and Smudger then will appear. Not being angry, but feeling guilt and sorrow, as he tells the old engine about how his life ended, and maybe hoping that he and Duke will meet up again. After that dream, Duke starts to feel the guilt as well, and then proposes to head out whilst the engines are asleep, he will end up meeting Smudger again, at the lakeside. From that point on, I think somebody should add onto this. My last idea is that, Duke make sures that at least once a year he will visit Smudger, or Smudger visits him.
Absolutely amazing story joe, this was an absolute amazing origin story of smudger and how being poorly built led him down the track of having a bleak future. Absolutely amazing. And I can’t wait for the stepney story
This story popped up on my recommendations list and after giving it a listen I can’t help but feel sorry for Smugger. He really didn’t deserve that at all. And the sad part is that’s probably what might have happened
Holy shit this brings back memories. 8 at one point when this first came out I drew a picture of the sence where smudger is is about to get crushed by the boulder and I made another picture of the image shown in the intro. Good times. I miss when I had more time to my self and could be left alone more when I was younger. Very nostalgic and a damn good story that left me speechless. Thanks for horrors of the rails and thanks for this story, inner demons, something in the Mine and the many other fantastic storys
This story was so sad. I almost cried. Smudger wasn't reckless, he just had a building error. Poor Smudger. Awesome story narrow gauge. It was sad but good. That ending was kinda spooky and depressing.
Wow, this makes me feel sorry for Smudger, heck it might change how you see him now, either a reckless engine or engine who wants to be useful but has problems in his design, made mistakes and forgetten.... And the ending was unexpected and so sad.
Sneaky Engine 😒Sorry but I seriously doubt that’s likely, at least 2 or 3 Thomas users like Jamesfan1991 illustrated how Smudger was found and joined the Skarloey railway so CLEARLY he’s still very much alive but still just a rusty piece of junk
Well done Narrow Gauge you made me feel scared and sad at the same time for Smudger I actually feel sorry for him right now and actually want to cry I’m looking forward to Stepney’s Story though it would be very nice if Smudger and Bertram were the same engine he didn’t deserve that
So haunting and so heartbreaking......... God, this is a masterpiece....... Now, I feel bad for Smudger, this has helped me get a change of heart on him. But, Duke would definitely be heartbroken and distraught that Smudger is gone forever after being left behind had his worries for him were proven true........
At least In this the poor bastard gets finished off unlike in the TV show where he's just left as a generator in the back of the shed, without an ending
Honestly more than a terror story... It's a very sad story... Very very sad... Smudger it's one of my favourite engines but him story always make me sad, this one in particular is my favorite and one of the few fics that made me cry. I hope his spirit of him some day he finds the peace, or maybe the reincarnation to finally have the life he never had the opportunity to live... Or His role as a protective spirit, comforting the engines when they get sick or are going to be scrapped.
I feel like I'm listening to an Untold Story Version of the Five Nights Of Smudger's fan-game series - in an interesting way of how his backstory would've really been in the TV series for what he always wanted to be... a "really useful engine".
Actually I think Smudger was turn into Bertram but as a saddle tank engine and he fell off the old iron bridge and survived but lost his memory and became one of the prince class like duke
This somehow makes what happened to Smudger that much more tragic, I mean his derailing was due to a build error. That everyone, even Duke, ended up condeming him for something he couldn't even help, not simple carelessness.
I wonder if sometime, someone will come to clear out the MSRs remains and sees the rusted remains of an engine. Maybe they'll do something with him and let his poor soul rest.
Poor Smudger... It wasn't his fault he wasn't a good engine. Perhaps one day he'll be found and rescued. Then at last he can be a Really Useful Engine...

That ending where Duke finally remembers about Smudger is so fitting adds to the horror element and makes it a tad bit more emotional 💯❤
When I first saw that sence I cried since I knew duke did really care for smudger but he was still sick of him at the same time. I was extremely sad about that when he found out that smudger was dead he would’ve likly felt guilty for not being a good mentor
Out of all the stories of smudger from all of the fans of Thomas and friends, this is the best one out all of them.
I'd have to agree, most of them consider Smudger as a total douche bag, even when he said, "Listen Dukie, who worries about a few spills." He was probably just fed up as in, his construction was absolute shite.
unfunny content creator call smudger that again!!! I dare you!!!
Anime Train Girl but it’s true

You coulda just helped me instead of making a documentary on me
Lol true
We have to find smudger
Where could he be

That was such a sad story. All Smudger ever wanted was to be really useful, but he was cursed with being poorly built...
At least we all know he wasn’t a jackass😔😞
You got to feel sorry for Smudger in this story, this story was perfectly executed, the visuals and music. Good job Joe.
I actually feel sorry for Smudger in this story. He wanted to be useful but thanks to being built poorly fate seemed to have something else in mind.
I feel sorry for Smudger too.
I agree too. Growing up I didn't like him but thanks to this story it brings out how sorry we feel for him. What a turn around!
Same here.
Smudger shouldn’t deserve this no one does
Maybe smugger has ADHD like me and my my best irl friend
The sudden switch from depressing to creepy near the end was amazing
i love this series so much, your so good at the creepy stories

Yes he CERTAINLY is just like u’re an awesome Thomas fan voice actor 😉👌

12:04 I've never been so scared in my life by the sound of a rock falling.
Neither have I, I literally jumped when I heard the sound😨😱
Same bro same 😂😂😱😱
Right, it felt as though my bones were crushed instead of Smudger
i jumped at that sound too, but at the same time, i felt so bad for poor Smudger.
Same
This was less of a horror and more of a sad story.
Kanefan701
Whoa dude 😰😨😱
Horror and sad stories often intertwine. I'd see this as a sad horror story given its ending
Kanefan701 like Timothy's true story
A "SAD STORY OF SMUDGER" you might say.

This is probably the most heart breaking interpretation of Smugger/Stanley’s story.
Fantastic story my friend! the "All I can do now is roam this place" Reminded me of Smudger's vengeance as Shadow Smudger in the FNaS 3 Minigame.
Thanks. To be truthful, FNAS was somewhat an inspiration for this story.

I also forgot to mention that when smudger derailed and knocked over a workman when I first saw it I actually thought the man had died lol
Another good horror story, it sure was a sad story for Smudger.
Great Story About Smudger, Also like a Stephen King Story
Dude please adapt this in trainz!
He must've died from rust or something
I agree by the way nice Timothy profile mate!
Evan Clarke no he got hit by a rock
So, this is Smudger's thoughts during his time on Mid-Sodor Railway

Beethovens Moonlight is a good touch.
Edit: sounds like the manager should have sent Smudger to be repaired. It wasn't his fault
A rather tragic ghost story. All needs is a bit of Tim Burton music and/or the Davy Jones theme from _Pirates of the Caribbean._
The phrase: “ What I can do now is roam this place as a lonely specter.” I feel the Five Nights at Smudger’s right here.
This is turning out to be a great year for Halloween stories for the Thomas community, great job
Creepyness or sadness, I can’t decide but I wish the abandoned mid Sodor railway was real so I can find Smudger
But what if he's rusted to death? He's a spirit now right?
Even Clarke
Well if that’s the case then I’m far too late 😔😞😭

See I never knew who smudger was at first but this story could tell us how long smudger be came a generator
Such a chilling story, man! Looking forward to the next one!

But this is one of those times with a stamp.
It would be so cool if Smudger would come back in the series
Fascinating! Truly fascinating! Spooky work!

Justice for Smudger.
OMG um I’m speechless... that is so brutal that will stay in my head for the rest of my life.....
Poor Smudger :(

This was wonderfully dark, 10/10
I like how traditional Smudger has had an American accent and yet in this story, he sounds cockney.
I fricking love these audio stories

So..... He dies smashed by the rock and turns into a ghost train? Sad, but well done
