Thank you for this video. This is the first time Iv'e seen this done on a serger. I have a serger but have not done this before. But watching your video the instructions were clear and easy to follow. So I think I will give this a try on the next pair of PJ's I make.
So, I've learned to sew from the internet. This video has been so helpful to me! I am so glad I found it. It makes so much sense to stretch it flat, THEN see or serge! Thank you so much for sharing.
You are doing great if you e learned to sew from the internet! It’s hard to learn a skill without some one on one interaction. You’re always welcome in the live streams. It’s nice to have sewing pals and folks to bounce questions off of. They’re a helpful bunch!
Thank you ….. thank you!!! I’m so excited as I’m discovering new techniques for using my serger!! Also, that with a serger, making pants is so fast! I can’t stand when handmade clothing actually LOOKS handmade ! Usually the commercial patterns contain too much ease and seams can get bulky with the normal 5/8” seam allowance!
Saremy , thanks for THIS tutorial !! I’ve been feeling like sewing new pajama bottoms for myself and husband because suddenly all his “Peter Alexander” sleeping pants are in shreds
Thank you so much for this video. And here I thought I needed an elastic sewing ewing foot..HA. Your video is short and straight to the point which I appreciate.
That's beautiful! I'm making stretch pants at the moment and have reached the waistband stage. I never thought about using my serger like that. Time to try your method, I'd say! Cheers from England xx
Such clear concise instructions I've never considered doing it this way but tomorrow I'm going to try it on some culottes I'm making and best of all no annoying music in the background so you miss what you're supposed to be doing I love my overlocker and use it for so much I have a800DL Bernina I treated myself to 6 years ago with a win on a competition the gentleman delivered and set it up for me showed me and made me completely rethread it which I found quite daunting at first but as the saying goes practice makes perfect I'm about to treat myself to a second overlocker as I've just had another little win on a competition and a bit of a refund from the tax man .I have a dedicated room for my sewing and have a adjustable height banquet table for my sewing machines and overlocker and a second adjustable height banquet table for cutting out my fabrics
Oh my goodness- how clean and simple is this?! I made some joggers last weekend and did serge my elastic but then attached a waist piece and encased the elastic - such a faff!! This looks so professional 👏
Thank you so much for this instructional video. After days of researching an easy way to add an elastic waistband (I'm a beginner), your video was the most helpful! Clear and concise,
Thank you for making this "short & sweet" video, Saremy. I'm feeling brave enough to give it a go now. Thorough explanation for a professional result. (eventually... ;-) )
Wow! I hate doing waistbands so this method looks entirely doable for me. Luckily, I stopped sewing a pair of shorts last night right at the waistband step. I can go and do the final touches to finish off this garment. Thank you so much for this video. I am now subscribed and looking forward to seeing more top tips. 👍😁😁
Thankyou soo much for this tutorial. I have 3 skirts I need doing and really was nervous about doing them. After seeing this demo it’s given me the confidence. Such clear instructions for ease.
Thanks so much for sharing. I’ve been wondering how this is done and trying to work out how to replicate my PJs waste band. But now I know. ! Brilliant !
Thank you for this tutorial! I had made a skirt and put the elastic in a casing, which did NOT work very well as the elastic kept turning. Plus, I got a serger recently and I need to learn to use it. Following the tutorial, I was able to redo the skirt with a sewn-in stable elastic waist.
This is the exact method I've been searching for, for at least a year and a half. I was pleased to hear your suggestion about what to do if your fabric is longer than what your elastic c ac n stretch. I have a pair of pants I'm sewing now, and, the fabric is indeed longer than the elastic will stretch. I'm not sure how to shorten it, so, I may just have to somehow bunch it up in the sewing I do. TYSM for sharing this technique with us. 😻😉👍
I don’t like the bulk from sewing the elastic by overlapping the ends. I zigzag one end to a small piece of fabric, then, abutting the two ends, zigzag the second side. Fold the fabric over the raw edges and zigzag to secure.
This is the best tutorial I’ve watched on this subject. I’ll probably watch it another time or two before I’m feeling brave enough to try sewing my first elastic waistband. I had questions but I read your replies to questions in the comment section and my questions were answered! I’ve now subscribed to your channel. I’m excited to see what else I can learn from you. Thanks so much!
Thank you very much , I am hoping to do three fitted sheets and I am going try this method even though I am still quite apprehensive about my ability 😅 but I am sure it will work out Thank you
Good luck! Narrow elastic can be fiddly. And don’t forget to not stretch the fabric after you’ve started sewing. Hold it still! Stretch, hold, sew. Once you’ve stopped sewing readjust and repeat. You’ll do great!
Did you use your coverstitch for this technique? You can, but my coverstitch would be pretty unhappy with me if I did. It doesn’t seem to like stitching through thicker elastics.
Oh dang. I know exactly what you mean. This method is done in factories and it’s always worked for me. It doesn’t matter that we’re using a straight stitch since it gets stretched. If you want that twin needle look you could always stitch it twice. Nobody will know 😉
Neat, the problem is when you need to tighten or loosen the elastic ( my weight fluctuates frequently and I have to be always prepare for it) then you have a lot of stitches to rip. :)
You can always get adjustable elastic. But you’ll need a hole to be able to access it. And I think a button. But if your entire waist is elastic, you’ll have maximum flexibility. (Rather than only the back being elasticized).
I made three pairs of leggings yesterday with the same method EXCEPT the fabric (vulnerable piece) was on the bottom and elastic on top with markings visible. Then I folded over and did the same zigzag finish. Any particular reason for having elastic against the feed dogs? I find it easier to see and keep the elastic next to the knife without accidentally cutting into it and the fabric right on that edge.
No reason at all! I’d do what’s comfortable for your fabric weight and your machine. Sometimes it’s trickier to manage the elastic. I typically think of the side facing up as the right side (when talking about the way the stitching looks). So I usually favor the right side of my garment facing up when going through the machine. But do what you like! Thats the most important way! 🙂
Such a good video. Have never serged elastic before...will try now!!! One question.....if you did not want to trim it, why didn't you raise your knife while serging??
This machine doesn’t have that option I think… I can’t remember. But even though my current machine has that feature I feel like I’m in a fast moving maze without the knife. Like anything can happen! But you can definitely drop your knife to sew it on. ☺️
I’m so glad! I sew on a Juki 8700-7. And if you want to learn more about it just let me know. I have a video about using it and what it does and how to maintain it too. (Good if you’re trying to decide on an industrial with or without electronics). Happy sewing!
I don't have a serger. Could I do something similar with a regular sewing machine? Also, should I use a different thread because of stretch? Thanks in advace!
Yes! You can use a zig zag in place of the serging stitch. If you can increase your presser foot pressure, do so. And remember to always stop needle down. Regular thread is fine. Just follow the same steps but replace the serger with a zig zag. It’ll work great.
After watching so many waistband tutorials, THIS is the one I needed. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Nice! I’m so glad it helped!
@@SewSewLive It must be hell sewing by hand without a machine.
I’ve been making skirts for years. Thank you for showing me another way of adding the elastic.
You are so welcome!
@@SewSewLive😊
Ha! I saved your video a year ago and today I am going to sew THE waistband. Thanks so much 😊
Good luck! You got this!
So excited to try this. I just found my elastic had come undone in a pair of leggings. I will be doing this to them now.
Oh that’s awesome!
EXCELLENT video tutorial! I searched through several videos and none were nearly as simple and well explained as this one. Thank you so much!
That’s awesome!
You’re an excellent teacher ❤
Well thanks. Thats nice of you!
Thank you. That looks so much better/easier than inserted elastic. I will be trying this out soon!
Nice! It’s so much flatter too. Happy sewing!
So much easier than going thru the casing! Great video and camera position!
I totally agree! And it won’t twist!
Thank you for this video. This is the first time Iv'e seen this done on a serger. I have a serger but have not done this before. But watching your video the instructions were clear and easy to follow. So I think I will give this a try on the next pair of PJ's I make.

Wow! Just wow! Fastest PJ shorts I’ve ever made for my man with your waistband method. Thank you so much! This is the best!!!
You're so welcome! PJ shorts for everyone!
It was perfect. Trying on my next pajamas for my grand kid. Thank you!
That’s the perfect place! Glad it helped!

Great tutorial. I have had to come back to it after not sewing for awhile. It was so easy to follow and complete. I like your manner.
Welcome back to sewing!
I will be giving this a try…..have some PJ’s with worn out elastic. Thank you!!!
Nice! They’ll be like new when you’re done.
Game changer for pajama pants! Thank you!
🙌🏼 my pleasure.
Very good tutorial. Thank you.

So very helpful. Thank you so much for this tutorial.
No problem! ☺️
Saremy , thanks for THIS tutorial !!
I’ve been feeling like sewing new pajama bottoms for myself and husband because suddenly all his “Peter Alexander” sleeping pants are in shreds
Nice! It’s my favorite way to attach elastic. It never twists like it would in a casing!
This was most easy to follow and understand.
Perfect!
Very clear and well explained!!
That’s great to hear!
Thanks for the video. It was exactly what I was looking for and answered the questions I had. My wife's favorite PJs live again :)
There’s nothing like favorite pajama bottoms! You did a great service!
Thank you so much for this video. And here I thought I needed an elastic sewing ewing foot..HA. Your video is short and straight to the point which I appreciate.
You’re welcome! And you’re right-no foot needed. They do it just like this in factories too. ☺️

Great teacher explaining as you go.I enjoyed your video.
Thanks so much!
Bravo👏👏👏 Thank you for sharing! You have saved me hours of aggravation!!!

An adjustable height banquet table sounds so helpful!! And congrats on the machines!
Thank youuuu so much! I’ve always pulled the elastic but I will take your advice and simply hold it so I don’t break my needle!!
Oh good! 😊
Sew perfectly done!
Looks great………love this technique !

Whatever works for you. I only use braided elastic and since I’m serging it to the garment it’s not bulky.
Thank you for yr tutorial making it so simple
