Seiko 5 Sports - SRPD65K4 - A gateway drug into watch collecting!

  • The new Seiko 5 Sports range maybe a perfect option for those people who want to dip their toe into the world of mechanical automatic watches.
    The Seiko brand has a depth of history, and the value for money factor is very high with Seiko.
    My model is the SRPD65K4, which has the 4R36 module a black face, dark gunmetal body, with a greenish khaki nato strap.
    For me this watch ticks a lot of boxes for what I want from a watch at this price point-
    A see-through case back
    Hackable
    Manual wind and automatic
    100m water resistant
    A good flexible size and a practical tough design.
    It looks very very similar to the hugely popular, older Seiko SKX.

    By the way, I think in hindsight i would recommend getting the braceletted version of this one - the SRPD65K1, (if they are same price) the nato strap this comes with is nice enough, but you could buy a replacement nato for not much money, and the colour matched bracelet looks pretty good too.. (so you may save money in the long run, if u intend on buying more straps for it down the line.).
    ... Just my thinking after owning it for while. (I still really like it and wear it almost every day)
    The other one worth thinking of is the SRPD79K1... the blacked out one... that looks super cool... the LUME is not very good on that model, but apart from that its a very cool looking option.

      I bought the bracelet version and found that it starts too look cheap within a few days as the coating rubs off with every tiny scratch. How do you find the case has held up on yours? The shop refuses to refund the watch I bought even though it has severe misalignment issues. Currently I really regret buying this watch.

      I was looking at the K1 braclet version as well but that will cost me about €120 more than the NATO K4. I just went ahead with the K4.

    For the 99.9% of people who don't dive to the depth of 200m the water resistance of 100m is ample. I have a watch that's 500m is been in the bath and that it. Most people just want to be assured if you dip you hand in the sink or drop it down the bog the watch will be okay. Bought a Seiko 5 while my watch is being serviced, they are fantastic value for money.

    I love these new SRPD watches from Seiko. I started my mechanical watch journey with a $1000 Seiko SPB315 “Slim turtle”.
    I just bought the SRPD53K1 and my copy is absolutely flawless, or nearly perfect. All the indices line up with the chapter ring and bezel markers, I can not see any flaws in the dial or case, the bezel action is crispy and satisfyingly clickable. It keeps time +- 5 seconds per day.
    Actually the movement runs slower dial side up, and faster crown side up. So when I set my watch down for the night, it gains the time it lost overnight.
    Best $250 I’ve ever spent on a watch.

    Solid choice for your first dip into mechanical watches. Seiko has a long standing and significant history within the industry. They nearly took down the Swiss! Which would have been tragic. And I do also agree with your philosophy about watch collecting in terms of thoughtfullness, e.g. adding value and discovering horology through these timepieces. I ordered a pair of the rubber strap variants of this model, one as a gift and one for me. I'm really looking forward to seeing your future acquisitions. And I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel! Oh Oh ! Sounds like you've been bitten by the watch bug. Time to never watch any more reviews on UA-cam and forums or it will be too late, and you'll end up in that deep deep hole called horology .. lol. Nice choice for your first Seiko though. I predict you won't stop at one 😲

    100 m is the minimum for a dive watch, only watch snobs think it’s 200m, the lack of a screw down crown is more of an issue.

  • @grantgre
    @grantgre 4 роки тому

    The perfect watch dimensions are I would say similar to the Rolex submariner from the 70s. 39 mm in diameter and something you can wear a shirt over to cover your watch with your shirt sleeve. With these watches they’re too big

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  4 роки тому

      I agree 39-40mm is the best sweet spot for most people.
      But I do think that popularity of the SKX line is mainly due to the sizing of this watch.
      It has a huge following, and if it was too big it just wouldn’t be as popular as it is.
      So I think that does suggest most people agree with me on that one.
      But of course everyone has different tastes and different sized wrists.
      (My wrists are just a bit smaller than average, and I think it fits me fine.)
      Have a look at my most recent watch collection vid. It’s on a new formed strap now, and it’s super comfortable on that.

      panagranit pana ....oh! That's really interesting. Obviously you have the 70's Rolex Submariner since you can compare it to this watch. Don't get me wrong, i'm not implying for a minute you don't have one and you have just googled that information. I mean, not you but only a total buffoon would do such a thing. One thing though, if you do have a Rolex Submariner from the 70's, why in the name of god are you looking at a Seiko 5?
      Another thing, how often do you get your Rolex serviced? Just asking in case i ever get one.

    • @grantgre
      @grantgre 4 роки тому

      68blues Yeah I have a Tiffany’s
      Submariner and I guess I’m lucky because with that watch you know you can wear it a dress shirt you can sleep comfortably most of the time you don’t have to take it off but these watches have gone too the large size ...they’re good for what they are but you know they need to come down in dimension. Why are you don’t believe somebody could have a submariner from the 70s wow?
      And how am I a buffoon if I have a Rolex and I’m looking at this watch that is such a an elitist thing to say that means if you have one Rolex you too good to look at a Seiko or whatever the this was? But having a very fine watch like a rolex shows you a other watches shortcomings you know like if the watch is big and bulky you know you might like that for a while but after a while it’s just too much you know and so is it the Rolex is good because it is something that you can wear every day and you could take it scuba diving

    Been watching these watches and they seem a little bit too big in diameter and also the height of the watch seems to be really big. I think that’s the only drawback I can see.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  4 роки тому

      They are not thin. But I think the diameter is spot on for 95% of wrist sizes.
      Great size for even medium small wrists in my opinion.
      But a bit thick to slip easily under a dress shirt I agree.

    Hey great video. Just a little note, this model is the SRPD91 not the SRPD65K4. The difference is the SRPD65K4 doesn't have the little print at the 6 o'clock and is the American model and the 91 is the Canadian version. This is according one of the answered questions in the amazon.com profile for the SRPD91. You can check it out here www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRPD91-5-Automatic/dp/B07ZJRTXFW/ref=pd_ybh_a_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=E9CHQK8SXEAVZR4ZWZ45

      I was just joking. I actually wore a Seiko 5 through many years of reserve army service as a backup.
      And although it was rated for 30m water restaurant only, I swam and showered with the thing - no problem.
      Now, it had the 7s26 movement.
      The 4r36 - that your watch has can be regulated quite well to about ~5secs/day.
      That will be the best $25 spent

      I understand the criticism, but I don’t agree.
      Better movement, hacking, winding etc. And the finish is really high. Been wearing it daily for weeks now and I’m still enjoying it.
      Not a mark on it and I surf, kite surf, and I’m on the beach lots. It’s been a solid choice.
      100m is fine for active in the water use.
      But of course if your a diver then 100m isn’t for you.
