Hi Debra, don't know if you'd remember me as we've only met once or twice in '85. I'm part of the family Dalton stayed w/ while visiting MN (believe summer of '86). Too bad this video came out 20 yrs after Dalton's passing.
Dalton was my mom's 1st cousin. My 2nd cousin? Either way, it is definitely a sore spot for me. He spent the better part of 2 weeks staying w/ our family while visiting family in MN. My parents at work left 13 y.o. me tagging along w/ him. He was a real-life hero to me. It's especially upsetting when people who should know better misname him. (Looking at the UA-cam sniper community.)
I grew up literally 3 houses away from Daltons house in Whittier, CA. Was childhood friends with his daughter. I remember he had that original photo hanging in his front room. This was late 70's early 80's. We all knew he had been to war. But to us kids he was just another one of the neighborhood dads. That was until we saw that photo. That's when we all realized he was a legit Badass. a real life GI Joe. All respect to Dalton Gunderson.
Finally! This has been driving family and friends crazy for years. Dalton was my friend and a former patient. I've always known about the Gunderson Postion!!
Great video, my father was a Marine Sniper Scout in the 1st Marine Division during WW2. He went to boot camp and Sniper school at Pendleton. He joined the rest of the 1st Marine Division in Australia after more training in New Zealand. He carried an M1Gurrand in combat and was attacked to an artillery unit and would go to the front line with the infantry and direct fire. He was a tremendous shot and taught me how to shoot he was always better than me until he got to be about 91 years old. His first campaign was Cape Gloster then Peleliu and then Okinawa and then the war ended and he went to China to guard trains from the communist for a couple of months before coming home. He passed away in 2018 March 18, He is still MY HERO. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Thanks for the thumbs up, I appreciate that so much, when he came home he married my mother had 2 daughters and then me. He was a very peaceful man all his life and never had a problem telling what he saw what he did, no bad dreams because he honored GOD and he knew that he was in charge. I can't say enough about my Father, I ain't no kid I'm 68 years old but he could remember names of people he served with, those who Died and he honored those men till he passed away March 18 2018 at 95 years old.

I’m glad someone made a video publicly clarifying this. So many confuse Mawhinney, Waldron, Gunderson and others as Hathcock. Looking forward to more content.
FMT For some reason I remember a story about Chuck in civilian life after the Corps, and at his house he had a hound dog, I think it was a hound dog, and it’s name was Winchester. Kind of cool in its own way. Good Day to You!
Well done, Corporal. The nice thing, though, is it shows a standard sitting firing stance that gunny Hathcock must have used more than once. It shows the Unertl scope on what looks like the same kind of tuned up Winchester 70 used by Hathcock. And thank you for bringing Cpl. Gunderson's name to light. He certainly earned the recognition, no matter how belated. Good on ya. As you know, the sitting position was one of a number standard shooting stances drilled into any Marine, and to call it anyone's individual signature firing position is kind of a slight to the Corps as a whole. I would like to see more videos from you.
I always thought it looked nothing like Hathcock. Apparently Hathcock was the only sniper to serve in Vietnam. Nothing to diminish his service, but others were snipers in Vietnam as well.

just signed up for the summit, all access pass. cool stuff. somewhere in there, in regards to your .308, I saw you mentioned being great out to perhaps 600 yards, and having a DEAD-ZONE from like 700-800. and then being back in business from 900 to 1,000. I am having the exact same phenomenon. rem 700 sos / AAC-sd, 20" stock barrel, 1:10 twist, using new hornaday eld-x 178's. what gives??? at least I feel I am in good company
Carlos Hathcock used a model 70 Winchester. Think about that. It is always entertaining to watch folks pushing the accuracy of their expensive custom built rifles and hand-crafted ammunition to the limits at the range, but it isn't real-world shooting to me. I don't mean any disrespect to the shooters or their sport. They do amazing things on the range, but I don't have a fancy custom rifle or a range with everything laid out neatly. I shoot in the mountains with my hunting rifles and the hand loads I make on my old Rock Chucker reloading press, shooting at angles and distances that may range from a hundred yards to about 1,300 yards. I am far more impressed by the old geezer that can with his hunting rifle whack a clay pigeon placed on a dirt bank a thousand yards away than I am with someone shooting a group half that size with a custom rifle from the bench. It would be more than awesome if some of the competition shooters would in addition to the videos they are making now, to also make videos showing what they are capable of with off the shelf hunting rifles and the same gear we "ordinary folks" use.
@BladeArtist 205 I shoot my .257 Weatherby and my .340 Weatherby out to about 1,250 yards; the limit of the scope adjustments. I love shooting at small targets at great distances.
That’s my dad, Dalton Benjamin Gunderson ❤ thank you for giving him the credit, it’s taken forever. I appreciate it. He would have as well.

I never even knew that and I was in for 6 years as a grunt
I'm ALWAYS correcting folks on this photo when I come across it online. :/
What rifle is he holding in this photo ? And is it a particular set up/version of a rifle model, as this looks to be a semi fluted barrel too.
just signed up for the summit, all access pass. cool stuff. somewhere in there, in regards to your .308, I saw you mentioned being great out to perhaps 600 yards, and having a DEAD-ZONE from like 700-800. and then being back in business from 900 to 1,000.
I am having the exact same phenomenon. rem 700 sos / AAC-sd, 20" stock barrel, 1:10 twist, using new hornaday eld-x 178's.
what gives???
at least I feel I am in good company
It was actually Jayden Quinlan, who had the issue above.
still, any thoughts would be appreciated
What do mean “dead zone”?
(0844 - 81 to 85. 29 palms and K-Bay)Thanks for the fact check. Have seen this photo around, good to know who it really is. Semper Fi.
Thank you.
Doesn't even look like Carlos.
And Carlos was a hero not for his kill count. But how he saved all those guys from a burning APC. Just my opinion.
He should have got the Medal of Honor for that deed
Erik Cortina recommended you and first video I see is on Whitefeather...cool!
Appreciate it Phil. What's your favorite Crayola flavor?
Semper Fi! (-:
This is the cover of the updated version of the book on Carlos Hathcock
Great job on giving credit where it's due!
Carlos Hathcock used a model 70 Winchester. Think
about that. It is always entertaining to watch folks pushing the
accuracy of their expensive custom built rifles and hand-crafted ammunition to
the limits at the range, but it isn't real-world shooting to me. I don't mean
any disrespect to the shooters or their sport. They do amazing things on the
range, but I don't have a fancy custom rifle or a range with everything laid
out neatly. I shoot in the mountains with my hunting rifles and the hand loads
I make on my old Rock Chucker reloading press, shooting at angles and distances
that may range from a hundred yards to about 1,300 yards. I am far more
impressed by the old geezer that can with his hunting rifle whack a clay pigeon
placed on a dirt bank a thousand yards away than I am with someone shooting a
group half that size with a custom rifle from the bench.
It would be more than awesome if some of the competition
shooters would in addition to the videos they are making now, to also make
videos showing what they are capable of with off the shelf hunting rifles and
the same gear we "ordinary folks" use.
@BladeArtist 205 I shoot my .257 Weatherby and my .340 Weatherby out to about 1,250 yards; the limit of the scope adjustments. I love shooting at small targets at great distances.
