Thursdacid - a few Cirklon patterns for the Eurorack

- I've been ill with a virus this weekend, so rather than plan a complex patch, I decided to just punch a few patterns into the Cirklon and make some acid breaks with the CV BOB sequencing the Eurorack.
This video pretty much has the patterns playing back. Everything in this video is sequenced by the Cirklon and the Euro is doing all the synthesis. The Cirklon is also manually sending via MIDI to a reverb and a delay in my DAW.
I've been listening to this tune for years now.
I can't thank you enough to have uploaded your work.
Thanks! I appreciate you listening in, and returning to it.
six years ago and still and i keep coming back for this patch.
That acid line is fucking amazing.
Great session!
Thanks RIMAR Tracks
@@LukeKillen What filter are using for the accents etc? I don't have modular, but was wondering if i could do something similar with my sem pro.
@@Synth2000 I was using the Doepfer A105-6 SEM filter clone, so you can definitely get something similar out of you SEM pro. THE VCO will be a bit different though has i recall using a WMD/SSF Spectrum VCO. A fast attack/decay envelope with a fairly exponential curve , and the ability to modulate the decay length is pretty important to this sound as well as being able to send subtle cut off changes to the filter per note.
@@LukeKillen Thanks, it reminded me to the Sem clearly - and I have Cirklon too so i will try it very soon. Very interesting!
@@Synth2000 I love the SEM too. I have a couple of SEM clone filters and have always wanted a SEM Pro. or Dual SEM. Such musical Synths.
woo, great sound!!! : )
Wow, so awesome. I'm on the waitinglist for a Cirklon for over a year now.
Thanks, It's a great sequencer. I'm sure you'll love it.
I lust after your Cirklon. And anyone else's Cirklon, actually. Nice sequences
So good! This should be released
Just found this video. I think its great. Good job mate.
Cheers.
Cheers Dualtrx
I still love this so much! Only 6 more months until I get mine
Dude that song was wicked powerful. This is the kind of sound that brings me back in the late 1980's man. You know back when it just started getting into the rap scene. Please make more where the beat track and the base is super powerful. Oh please.
Thanks Scott. I always loved early electro hip-hop from the mid 80s, so it probably shows here.
@@LukeKillen Big time Luke. I would love to hear you rip a track that expresses that kind of sound in a bigger way. I'd love to find out what your viewers would think. I'm willing to bet you would get huge watch time numbers from it.
Sounding great as always Luke.
So, quite literally...........(wait for it!)...........those are some sick beats! :p
Phnaf Phnaf!
Very slick line Luke, thx for sharing
That was fantastic!
Thanks for tuning in.
Fantastic track! Love that acidy line. I'd be amazing to watch a video of you programming it into the cirklon. I can hear subtle variations to the filter.
Thanks. The way I work is to build a complete patch and a full rhythm with lots of modulation opportunities patched to the Cirklon. Then i tend to make loads of variation with edits to each scene. Later I’ll arrange and delete bits that don’t work so well.
That’s sounding great
Yes, yes and...yes!!!
Making great use of your gear. Nice work.
So nice !
That. Fucking. Acid. Bass line. WOW!!
Brilliant !!!!!
My friend died right before he was supposed to get one. Now I gotta get one for him.
Awesome session. I have the pyramid but the cirklon has a lot of features i am missing at the pyramid. 16 Encoders for example :-) but for today, subscribed mate!
Awesome track!
super nice
so good, impressed
Rude boi riddim 😎
Nice 😊
I'll be back for more!
Cheers!
Dance club in the Bladerunner universe anyone? Excellent patch, and a great showcase of what the Cirklon is capable of. Was all logic and sequencing for this done with just the Cirklon?
Yes, the euro is just making sounds
Very cool!
Only cirklon tune I've seen that's actually great, for real.
This f'n awesome!
Waiting over two years for the one I ordered...... I wonder if the Behringer CS-80 clone will release before I am sent the Cirklon??? Maybe !!!!
Probably will be tommy, but it will almost certainly be land fill years before you Cirklon stops working.
@@LukeKillen
I can't argue that point.... Enjoy that wonderful sequencer you lucky dog...
@@tommyg5095 You'll be up soon.
@@LukeKillen
It would be nice... gotta still be patient
nice one
Awesome!
Hi ! very good ! I have a cirklon and i want to know how to do an automation ? thanks ;)
FANTASTIC - Are you writing the music or discovering it? Do you understand what I mean by discovering? I discovered music when I was heavy into song writing with my synths.
How do you connect it to the Cirklon? Could you explain the routing. Cheers.
I'm using the VCIO box attached to the Cirklon. it has 16 configurable CV/gate I/Os tha tthe Cirklon is sequencing.
Where can I buy these tracks?
Holy Shit, this is amazing as fuck. Thank you!
Is all of the sound coming from the rack? I haven't gotten into euro rack so I'm not sure the possibilities. Is that pad coming from the rack, or are the drums? About 8 months into my wait for my Cirklon to be available...
Yes it's all Eurorack. FX are in DAW.
@@LukeKillen Is there one polyphonic module or did you have to create your own polysynth by adding multiple VCOs, filters, envelopes, etc to your rack? Feel free not to answer if I'm annoying. I don't believe I've yet seen a rack of that relatively small size that has drums, bass and a poly synth. That's insane and I don't even want to think of the money I'll dump into that once I buy my first semi modular or modular device. Sounds sick but that's a given, I'm just intrigued by how cool that is, and that we can build these ourselves...
@@_EightySix So there is a bunch or VCOs, VCAs, VCF's LFO's, Sequencers, Envelopes, Switches, etc. in the rack. So i just make multiple parts. there isn't any polyphonic parts though, but it is foe all intents and purposes multitimbral depending on how you connect up the modules.
Idk if I’m being stupid but do you need a cirklon to make drums like that? I’ve been trying to replicate something like that in ableton but these are like really good, very sick sick song btw
Thanks. The Cirklon is only sequencing. It doesn't make any sound, so of course, you can make drum sounds however you like. In this case the eurorack is making the sounds.
@@LukeKillen aye yea just found out it was a sequencer, still tho I’m really curious how he arranges his drums
*how you arrange your drums
@@notmars7993 I build loads of sequences, as scenes, then build bridging sequences to make them work together. I use P3 patterns to maximize individual control over each drum part.
September.....
This is great. My itch for my Cirklon (should be ready in jan) intensifies.
I’m wondering about your decision to go with the cvio breakout box as opposed to the euro module. I’m torn between the two. Wasted hp vs another box on the desk.
To me it seemed a waste of HP. I don't always use the Cirklon for my eurorack so the desktop BOB made sense. also the eurobob cable is just a ribbon cable as far as i know which didn't seen very safe to me.
Hmm. I figured the printer cable could work with the Euro bob. Maybe I’m wrong.
Can I ask a couple more questions? What cheeks are you using? They look smaller(which I want) than the ones in the store.
Are there any modules that you consider must-have’s for integrating the Cirklon? I’m thinking that clock multiplier/dividers, EG’s(though Colin will hopefully be releasing an updated firmware in the next decade ;))....
Thanks for the reply btw.
I made the side cheeks myself from Australian Spotted Gum floor boards which I shaped and then sawed in half to make them 9mm thick.
Luke Killen Nice! That’s exactly what I’m going to do. Was it easy to find the appropriate screws?
I used the screws straight from the Cirklon rack ears :)
How do you have it connected to the modular system via MIDI to CV, right?
Via the Cirklon CVIO. The Cirklon has 8 Gates and 16 CV I/O as well as MIDI and USB I/O
I'm a huge fan of your videos! I was wondering: If you're doing effects in your DAW or outside of your rack, how do you handle mixing? Are you creating submixes or sending each voice into an interface? Do you use a traditional mixer, or do any mixing in your rack? Thanks in advance.
Thanks Russel. I send each part to the DAW live as i patch with 6-8 channels direct from the Modular, where i use FX sends and process as needed also live as i patch. Sometimes i will buss the Drums as a group or the whole stereo two buss to my 500 series rack for processing. So pretty much everything I hear as i patch is via my DAW. Essentially my DAW is being treated as a mixer with FX sends i guess.
torturing myself on the cirklon waiting list - might be a silly question but what are you using for the drum sounds?
It will be worth the wait no doubt. The drums on this patch are made up from various modules....its a few weeks (and many patches) back now but if i look at the lights i see that the kick is a Noise engineering Basimilus Iteratus, the Snare is from a Mutable instruments peaks, and i think it is being filtered through a saturated WMD/SSF Pole Zero with a short EG effecting cutoff for snap. The hats are almost certainly one of the VCO's tuned and then a bit of noise added to the FM input. and filtered through a high pass or band pass filter. The decay section of an envelope is modulated by the cirklon to make open high hats the hats have got a bunch of other modulations from the cirklon probably pitch and amplitude modulations of the VCA ....beyond that i can't quite remember. Hope that helps.
what's the max amount of steps for a certain sequence on the cirklon??
A P3 pattern can be 256 steps. but that pattern can be running at a pace from anywhere from 1 step per bar to 64th Triplets. A song containing many scenes (made up of patterns on mutiple tracks) is only limited by the memory of the Cirklon.
I see... seems like a very versatile machine. Might have to start saving up!
Sure, just sign up for the waiting list. by the time yours is ready you'll have the cash
Great track! ...right up my street. Also, as a Cirklon user myself, am happy to see it in action here again. It was only the other day I was thinking "wow, he never seems to use the Cirklon" ...ha ha
Turning the A & B encoders.... is that just sending out 2 different midi CCs to control outboard FX wet/dry mix?
Haha yep, I do use it and love it, but i generally keep this channel about the 12RU eurorack or small system patches. I always use the Cirklon for live shows and I love making dance music with it. It's a spectacular sequencer. Thanks for the comments.
Regarding the A and B controllers. Yep. they are just sending Midi CCs to the send of a reverb and Delay in my DAW. You may note that a couple of times the DAW didn't listen to the CC and no effect was heard. I think that was to do wit the ranges which i set in the DAW.
Really good! And then you want a Cirklon. Polyphonic Eurorack?
Fucking good!
You have the best name on the internet.
Luke Killen hey luke, im on the waiting list, do you love this cirklon, is it as awesome as i think it is?
Yeah, it's totally worth it. The wait gives you plenty of time to save up and ease the pain of the price tag.
How do you route each of the voices? Using a mixing module and from it into an audio interface? Love your work, fantastic sound!
A combo of straight from the VCAs at low level output into my DAW and line level output from I/O modules. usually 8 channels into the DAW so i can apply reverb, delay and processing live to the patch.
This is fantastic. Album?
Fantastic track. What are you using for the swelling pads?
Thanks Justin it's a Braids VCO in 3xSaw mode going through a modulated Twin peaksVCO in Bandpass mode. Frequency central X envelope effective both a VCA and Frequency of the Twin peaks. Twin peaks is also being modulated by an LFO.
Drums are 808 tiptop module?
No, I don't have any Tiptop drum modules. It's a while ago but it looks like Snare is MI Peaks, Kick is Basimilus Iteratus with a EG effecting pitch. Hats are a VCO FM modulate filtered and modulated by noise. A modulated EG effecting amplitude and filter make for open and closed hats.
Luke Killen my compliments,beautifoul!
Are drums sequenced in P3 or CK pattern ? Loving your videos!
Thanks M. Wansart. P3 patterns for the AUX and mute possibilities.
Hey man, the jam was great! Are those chords from your eurorack or from somewhere else?
Thanks Ben, All synthesis is from the Eurorack.
Sure, It's' all from the Eurorack with exception of the Reverb and Delay.
what plays the kick?
It's a while ago so it's hard to remember but i think based on the LED's it's a Basimulis Iteratus, Probably filtered and with an EG or two modulating it and the filter.
thanks for the info. which EG you use with BIA?
Usually something fast and or exponential like Maths/Function or sometimes I use the Frequency Central X Envelope.
Crackin! its that acid line thats so basic but nuanced perfectly , is there a dl somwhere?
Thanks, SELEKTROw, it only exist here for now. A version might come out at some point.

Nice sounding VCO's - what is it ?
It's a while ago so I can't remember. i'm also not sure which parts you mean. The pads are almost certainly a Braids running through a filter. the Acid could be WMD/SSF, probably run through a Doepfer A106-5 VCF because it's a wikkid Acid filter
I've meant bass part, it's so fat and versatile
Oh cool. Then it's probably the Variable output from a WMD/SSF Spectrum VCO. Defiantly running through a Doepfer A106-5 in lowpass mode and probably Make noise maths as a EG for both the VCA and Filter cuttoff. Cheers. Cirklon is also doing a lot of modulations on the EG and Filter
Que maravilla🪐
Gracias por su atención :)
Luke Killen gracias a ti por compartir 👍
hapax & fh-2 knocks cirklon out of pole position
It seems to me that Hapax has only 16 tracks with 8 patterns each compared to Cirklon's 64 Tracks, each with no hard limit on the number of patterns.
Hapax- 4x gate, 4x cv outputs and two cv inputs Cirklon-16x CV outputs, 8x gate CV/inputs and 16x MUX for analogue drum machines.
Pairing a FH02 to a Hapax adds 8hp of unnessasary space to your eurorack rack, which gains 8 more CVs to the Hapax, tying up the USB midi port in the process. Cirlkon can do exactly this too, which is great, but it doesn't need to because it already has all the I/O, that Hapex can get out of that.
Let's continue to compare I/O.
Hapax-MIDI 3x out, 1x MIDI in, 1 x usb MIDI with 1x 16 channels. 1x midi USB host.
Cirklon-5x MIDI output, 5x MIDI input, 1x MIDI sync, 1x USB MIDI with 6x virtual port (16 channels each). 1x USB Host.
I'm not sure how tight the Hapex is, im' sure it's great, but Cirklon is widely known as having the tightest tinming out there.
Probably best to not go into the nature of Cirklon's Inception like internal sequencing opportunities, because, it's extremely modular compared to the way that Sqaurp do things. Especially since there are huge posibilities for intertrack modulations which are limited with less tracks and aren't actuallt possible with a Hapax as far as i can tell.
However, i recognise that most people just like to step sequence 16 step pattern techno, so it does the trick 100% of the time for them and it's cheaper.
I'd recommend reading the Cirklon Manual to understand why it is so highly regarded before you decide that it has somehow been beaten in an imaginary race by another Sequencer.

@@LukeKillen hmm i owned cirklon. thats better than reading a manual. cirklon was like using a scientific instrument, no fun at all. so it modulates another track. how often do i do that? also do you know how big the cv breakout for cirklon is? hapax is my favorite sequencer of all i have tried. including cirklon. its simply a joy to use. and techno sucks anyway lol
Good to hear your personal opinion about your sequencer, on my channel.
@@LukeKillen are you mad i told the truth? im allowed to do that? cirklon is not necessary and not fun and users arent usually all that talented. youre kind of luke warm yourself, not terrible, not outstading. youre definitely not a killer and your sequencer is unnecessarily complicated but might give you an identity and you love it for that
