    Blackout the Tank: in my 20 gallon planted tank I added Amano shrimp, Ottos, Siamese Algae Eaters, and American Flag Fish. The Flag Fish ate the thread algae in the first 24 hours, but I still had tons of hair algae, dust algae and lots of horrible Black Beard Algae. So I blacked out the tank with cardboard and black towels for four days. All the algae died and the plants, fish, and shrimp were fine. I trimmed off most of the leaves with the dead BBA and it hasn’t come back.
    No reason to use chemicals if a 4-day blackout works so well.

     @MJ Aquascaping There are a lot of aquarium channels that essentially do nothing but add and remove fish. Fish unboxing dressed up as love for the hobby when they're really just using the "add new fish" for content. I watched one channel where the way to fix algae was to "Stir the sand" and then add some chemicals... While of course he unboxed / added new fish after getting rid of the fish he got last month.
    I say all that to say this... MJ Aquascaping is one of the few aquarium channels on youtube where the focus is the actual hobby and the biology of the tanks. So yeah lol use that tank to showcase the ridiculousness that's in the hobby while dropping some knowledge. Chemicals to fix issues instead of addressing the root cause is one such teachable moment.

      Not sure if I totally agree with the sentiment. I had a long battle with BGA and erythromycin (along with all the non-chemical work I was doing) finally ended it. No Planaria is used used frequently by the shrimp community. H2O2 and glutaraldehyde are well known algaecides.
      Not saying there aren't a lot of snake oil products out there, just saying that categorically casting them to the curb might not be the way to go.

      @@williammcdowell6257 I'm certainly familiar with the idea that beneficial bacteria can be affected, but erythromycin is an extremely common treatment here in the US for quarantining and/or sick fish, and I've personally used it successfully. I can see how one might be nervous about it, but unless you can list reasons I'm not aware of, I'm not sure the "shouldn't" really applies.
      However, you have a great point that I hadn't considered - the availability of EM in the US as an OTC vet med is not true of the EU and other places.

      @@peadookie Thanks for that, in a quarantine tank where filter health isn't a prime consideration I know that some diseases of fish can be effectively and safely treated this way. And my post needed qualified, I was writing about using antibiotics for algae control, specialist Vets in the UK will, at some cost prescribe for fish farms, retailers when necessary.
      In the UK erythromycin is not a first line of response antibiotic for humans, medics here reserve it for pneumonia and hard to treat infections.
      For a planted community tank, even for disease, I'm not sure a Vet would prescribe in the UK or EU.

      You should look at the root cause. Hair algae (Oedogonium sp.) is often caused by too much light given the amount of nutrients and CO2 you provide. You need to check if you have no nutrient or CO2 deficiency and if the CO2 leves are stable during the day. Reducing the light is the first step. Regular glutaraldehyde should never be a solution.

    Use any type of liquid carbon for aquarium, the best and safe way to kill algea

  • @diamondblue9174
    @diamondblue9174 2 роки тому +2

    In my experience I've had success utilizing SeaChem products that add liquid carbon as well as a polymer that reduces phosphates (key to stunting). I combined this with high dosing of Co2, light reduction of course H20 changes and an algae scrubber (I'm wavering back and forth on scrubber). Focus on reducing the source instead of an Rx to kill what will return because conditions never change. Just IMHO.

    • @ampac
      @ampac 2 роки тому

      Glutaraldehyde (wrongly labelled as "liquid carbon", because its contribution to CO2 is irrelevant) works against algae since it is a very toxic biocide. But it will also poison everything else in the tank in the process - it causes severe neurological damage to animals. Note that the livestock will be exposed to toxic levels way before you start seeing any signs. This is why glutaraldehyde should only be used directly on top of algae (during maintenance and when the plants or rocks are not submersed). It should not be used in the water column. As you said, you should focus on the source (CO2 and nutrient stability, water flow, balance between light, CO2 and nutrients, etc.) Otherwise, keep glutaraldehyde well away from the tank and use only in emergencies directly against BBA, but never in the water column.

    The only chemical stuff I use for killing algae is from the brand Azoo Plus Algae Away. It really works like magic. I put the dosage just like the instruction manual and the next day the hair algae turn white and died the rest just got cleaned up by my Amano Shrimp. It is safe for my fish, snail and shrimp. PS. at that time I even plug out my co2 to see that it really works.

    • @ampac
      @ampac 2 роки тому

      You are missing the point. It is quite easy to kill algae using herbicides and algaecides and there are dozens of products that can be used for that purpose. The problem is that many of them are too toxic to use in a tank and can harm fish and invertebrates. For example, Copper (Cu) based algaecides are used in pools and ponds and are very effective. However, if you use a Cu-based algaecide , the toxic copper will kill any snails and some shrimp species that you put on it, even if you wait several years. That Azoo product has no safety data sheet and no list of ingredients. If it contains 3-5% copper, then it will definitely kill several algae. But use it at your own risk.

Please don't get me wrong here nothing beat the feeling of defeating the algae with the natural way knowing the cause of the problems, from my previous comment not all people in these hobby got their hands and time researching the algae problems, that's why all of these product exist for our convinience. Hi MJ, i have a question. i am just about to start aquascaping and i was wondering if the Dennerle scapers soil is anygood? i have a dennerle 60l tank now and need to raise it a lot... any suggestion on how to do that without using 40l of soil haha... i was thinking about lava split. gz from Eindhoven

      Hey Dennis!
      If you are new to Aquascaping the Dennerle soil is great because it's releasing a lot less ammonia and nutrients in the beginning compared to other brands.
      And yeah great idea to go with lava split if you want to raise the substrate in the back.

    After adding 1st dosage, if you dont see any changes in next 30 days tou need to add again same dosage. It fixed my problem but it doesn't fix it in 3 days, if you want algae removal in 1 to 3 days then you should use algae removal for sweemingpools but it will also remove anything alove inside tank... lol... And yes there is manual for that and it says you have to wait 30 days if no changes do it again...

    To all the algae-murdering experts out there, does anyone have an effective weapon against cladophora? got some in a tank, probably came in on some moss. It's growing in much of the moss now. Flourish Excel + manual removal is damaging the moss more than the cladophora, it's been a month and i'd say the situation got worse. And i've read that blackouts dont help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Unfortunately, many of these products fail. My advice to you is to take the fish to another aquarium. Use 250 mg of antibiotics sold for humans by dissolving them in water for 3-4 days. Then do a water change and filter cleaning. The problem will disappear very soon.

      Antibiotics are strictly controlled in the EU and the UK (and are prescription only from a Doctor or Vet) and should never be used this way, it may build up antibiotic resistance in the environment. It is illegal to knowingly add antibiotics to the water course in the UK. Goodness knows what antibiotics do to the filter bacteria, lots of common bacteria in the environment can cause illness and death in mammals if they get in the bloodstream. Anyone with more science than me who cares to explain, I'd appreciate it.

      @@williammcdowell6257 I live in Turkey. Here, too, only a doctor or veterinarian can write. I used the leftover antibiotic prescribed for my dog. There are only plants in the aquarium, no living things. If you pay attention, I already said take the fish to another tank.

    • @williammcdowell6257
      @williammcdowell6257 2 роки тому

      @@hakankucuk3168 You did, no offence meant, but it is still inappropriate (and in the UK illegal) to use prescribed drugs in this way. And you still have the issue of filter bacteria wipe-out which cleaning will not address, removing the fish is rather beside the point, antibiotics will not kill them (unless the dose is absolutely massive), antibiotics are 'magic bullets', they target bacteria. Right water quality, right light and CO2 will address all algae issues given enough time, in over 50 years of keeping fish and plants never had to strip a tank down or use antibiotics to treat algae. Enjoy the hobby, best wishes.

    The warning is probably trying to say that releasing it into the environment would harm the ecosystem. Killing algae would be very bad for wildlife, as many native species eat it

  • @philippecapron8010
    @philippecapron8010 2 роки тому

    For the "harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effect" I think it should be because it's a photosynthesis inhibitors for algae (not the same proteins used by algae to photosynthesise compared to plants so it's possible to target those and not penalise the angiosperms ("superior" plants) or bryophytes (mosses) in recommended doses. And algae are the bases of a lot of aquatic ecosystems so if you remove algae in nature you are definitely harming the aquatic environment... So safe in aquarium but not to be thrown in a stream! 😁
    But it maybe another reason, that's the one I'm thinking of...

    • @philippecapron8010
      @philippecapron8010 2 роки тому

      (just watched the end) inhibiting the photosynthesis is just starving them so if they have a lot of reserves it may perhaps take long to kill them (but they should not be growing). Moreover in planted tanks we have strong lights so maybe even with a heavily impaired photosynthesis what remains is sufficient for them to cling to life. Lastly we do a lot more water changes than the average aquarist so we dilute the product quickly.
      I would say that it may be useful for us with the goal of preventing algae to come back after a problem or to prevent them from appearing if you foresee a huge perturbation of your tank ecosystem.
      So maybe useful as another tool but we already spend so more time and energy on our tank than mister everyone and bubble the fish, it may be not able to make a difference for a tank with few problems (a lot algae for us is not a lot for the average people ^^) ...
      Again these are just hypothesis! No time to do a proper scientific experiment with control tank and all that! 😁
