99% of times your bank offers better exchange rates than these counters. So almost all the time it's better to withdraw Yen or pay with your card in Yen and let your own bank do the currency exchange. The best option is to use something like Wise or Revolut (or similar), which have way better rates and minimal fees. Exchange counters are expensive and outdated.

Hello, So i went for my 2nd trip to Japan this year and stayed in Shinjuku Tokyo. I exchanged my Euro's at the shops behind Shinjuku Station. The rates were in my opinion good and they dont charge a fee. I remember hearing about Travelex, but i could not find the shop in Shinjuku. I came across these shops (behind the station) by accident and decided (after looking for the best rate) to exchange there. Do you recommend these shops behin Shinjuku Station or do you recommend others ? (I go back in March 2025) Thank You.

There are many stores in Shinjuku with poor rates, so it would be dangerous to exchange at a store you find by chance. As I mentioned in the video, I recommend World Currency Shop.

@@ONOinJapan I remember trying to look for this shop (World Currency Shop) in Shinjuku, but when searching on Google Maps and i found "World Currency Shop Shinjuku Nishiguchi", but when i got there, i found no shop there... So i ended up going to smaller shops. Now i read that maybe the shop was underground, it is a little confusing for 1st timers 😅. Do you know this shop or another one in Shinjuku i could try ? Thank You 🙏

You're better off withdrawing from your card or just spending with your card and letting your own bank do the currency exchange. The best option is to go for fintech apps like Wise or Revolut which have an even better rate than your bank.

Those shinjuku shops are great. Unfortunately I didn’t find them until my last day in Japan but they had the best rates by far!
