I have been making wild lettuce tea for years. It actually tastes fine! Just add a bit of honey and you're good to go.
It didn't help with pain too much, but it does help with period pain.

I make syrup with the hard stalks, and powder from the softer parts and make capsules with dehydrated wild lettuce. I did transplanting when plants were very small and 90% of them did extremely well. I make 4 cups of syrup from 1 lb of fresh plant material and add a lemon extract (makes it taste better) and take a couple tablespoons for relief. I am a chronic pain patient, who has taken a variety of meds and i equate wild lettuce to Valium, where pain is dulled away, and will definitely induce sleep. I get at least 4hrs of very restful sleep when taking this. And i ONLY take it when i plan to be in bed. I suffer spinal cord nerve damage with restless leg type symptoms and it works better than any muscle relaxer than I've ever been prescribed. My dose in powder form is from 2-4 tsps.

THIS is what I've been looking for to finally get off the mild pain medication I take from having rheumatoid arthritis.
The trouble is, every time I stop taking it, I have restless legs every night which prevents any sleep at all!!
I just keep trying new herbs to keep the RLS at bay, but nothing has worked so far.

It is said that plants/weeds show up where needed.

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen Рік тому +21

@kristibi7971 Yes, I've heard this too!
And for the past 3 years Nature has brought me one "new" plant every year, and it turns out I DID NEED that plant!
      Coincidence???
      I have this theory...
(My imagination goes quite rampant at times, so THIS ONE might be a bit off the charts!)
      But...
      What if the soil,
or I should say ALL the different microbes etc. IN the soil,
what if all those things are so perfectly networked that -
whenever they come across "something" that lives within their patch is in need of a "fix" - (could be a plant, or an animal)
the network puts out a special signal within the soil to "order up" the plant who has the fix that's needed. ?
      For instance -
Me walking around in my patch,
and my body naturally sluffs off skin cells.
Plus, my hands are touching the soil while gardening.
The network within the soil "reads" my skin cells via my DNA, or something.
It detects that I'm in need of pain relief.
Or it could detect that I have a cold.
Just whatever is happening w my body, it can read the signals.
So it puts out a signal (probably a chemical signal) which would activate a certain plant seed that would help with the problem it detected, to begin germination.
(Bcuz the seeds were probably already there in my soil already, but dormant.)
Result - wild lettuce seed is now growing, and now available to me.
Which IS just what I needed!
      Yeah.
      THAT'S my theory.
      I know...
      I know.
      It sounds really wacky!
But that's my brain being it's normal far-fetched self!
Really, I just think the soil microbiome is SO much more advanced than we humans are aware of.
Truly, I try to keep an open mind.
      Which leaves me thinking
      anything is possible!

I also make the wild lettuce tincture. I have never made it to sell to anyone, just for my own use/pain. Using the wild lettuce tincture, I was able to go completely cold turkey on the chemical opioids. I was up to 600mg daily and really didn't like the long term damage those pain meds can cause. Had heard about wild lettuce and when I found that we actually had it growing on our property, I figured, why not!?
I was careful when I started taking the wild lettuce tincture, to see what my tolerance level was and how much I needed to take to have less pain. I loved the fact that when I'd found out how much I needed to take and how often, I did not have any withdrawal symptoms from kicking the opioid meds! It might be different for others but, I have never gotten "high" from opioid medication, regardless of how high a dose I've been on. That could be why I didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms? I don't know, I'm just happy to be off the chemical crap!
What I did notice is that the strength/potency in the wild lettuce can differ from year to year, depending on many factors such as weather, rain, no rain, heat etc. etc. etc. Also if you harvest from places where you don't normally harvest, the soil quality can also affect the potency of the tincture. I'm always careful when I start using a different years batch.

@@monicasdg4140 I have "chronic" back pain. Middle of back, slightly under my shoulder region. I've had many doctors exams and MRI's done and, they for whatever reason, can't see anything on those MRI's that could cause the pain. I've been twice at what is called over here in Sweden a "pain clinic", where they do all sorts of physical tests. Have you standing in various positions, holding arms out, raising and lowering arms in different ways and yes, they could determine that I in fact was in pain...
Why? Still don't know but, the weird part is that my mother and sister had the same, in the same place on their backs. 2 of my now adult children, a girl and boy have the same pain. All of us including my mom and sister have/had carpal tunnel syndrom and have had to have surgery for it. Guessing whatever it is, is hereditary???
If I were to guess what it is, I'd say some sort of nerve pain. We all also have joint pain. Not always but, enough to be a pain in the rear...
Both my daughter and I make and take the Wild Lettuce tincture and it does work. Not 100% but enough to make it bearable, pretty much the same as the opioid pain killers did.

Thank you ladies for demonstrating the wild lettuce tincture.
I AM WILD ABOUT WILD LETTUCE. This plant and Plantain are my favourites. For 5 years I have been doing wild lettuce infused oil. This is to be used as a massage oil into muscles and joints. I went on this journey to help find a remedy that would relieve my mums rheumatoid symptoms. It has helped her at times. But over the years all 4 of my young adult kids love it. It’s the first thing they grab when there are aches and strains from work or workouts.
Recently I’ve experimented with turning the infused oil into a salve. And I’ve given it to friends who have arthritic pain. They are giving very positive feedback. I also use wild lettuce as a tea combined with other herbs to disguise the flavour. Wait in interest for when you guys do the decoction and make it into a tincture.

In my opinion... I find gloves give a false sense of safety. Wearing gloves you can't feel when your hands are disgusting... then, wearers tend to touch multiple different things without thinking. I would rather see someone wash their hands, then touch my food than to be wearing gloves, touch a door handle, cash register, cover their cough or handle money.
Honestly, I would listen to comments... take everything into consideration... but, you do you. Plus... Vodka tinctures will not allow any germ pathogens to survive.

The doctor gave me several prescriptions but nothing worked. I had to soak my arm in taw bleach every day until it burned too much to continue. If I stopped, it grew again. Even with the bleach, it took months to get rid of. I can take them off if I need to 'touch' to be sure of an identification, but I don't e-v-e-r want to go through that again. For my dry leaves, I cut the whole plant and hang it on a line in my pantry. Think of how a cut flower will pull as much moisture as it can from its stem trying to stay alive. In the same way wild lettuce leaves will suck the sap out of the stalks as it dries. There is still some left if you don't have much to pick, but we literally have it growing everywhere, so the dry stalks go in my compost. Last year was the first time that I made the thick syrup of wild lettuce and once in a while ate the young leaf. I was dealing with really, really strong migraine last year, I never suffer for headaches that strong, that is why, I started making this remedy, and it really helped me. I made also the tea wirh fresh leaves and it wasn't too bad, the good thing was that it helped me sleep, because every night I was afraid of going to sleep with those horrible headache, chills and burning sensation that I was dealing with. I fell that the plants speak to us, because there years ago, I started knowing about this plant, and did my wild crafting three years ago, brought the wild lettuce (I found three species) the first year I didn't got any big growth, and also didn't want to consume because I found them some in the roadway and some at the park, so I wanted to have new plants growing in my garden in order to consume. So last year I had plenty of new plants, the plant knew that I was gonna need her and spoke to me and I brought her home, and I was ab)e to harvest her when I needed her. My health is much much better this years due to lots of medicinal plants that I grow and consume. I no longer need to take any medicne tha t I was taking last year, about 10 types of medicine that every time I go to the hospital I get new preacriprion, Drs. Didn't even know for sure what was My health problem, so they just kept giving medicine and when they didn't work, they prescibe difeerent ones, one of the medineI was told by my Dr. That I have to take it for 10 years, I even stopped taking that one because I did my research and find out that, taking that medine for a long period of time, It could cause a hearth attack. I found out that I didn't need that medicine, because its been almost a year that I stopped taking it and I feel great, and my blood work it's perfect.

For the acid reflux I was dealing with due to stress, what really help me was the adaptogens that I take with my morning drink. I get those at the whole food store, they have mushroom type, roots and some are combined with mushrooms and roots, my favorites are chaga mushroom and reishi mushroom, maca roots, stragalus. I have made wild lettuce tea almost daily... Mine is growing in the garden just as yours is. I love it. After made if put in frig to get cold, it's not bad at all after your tastebuds become adapted... it took me about a wk of daily use of 4oz-8oz to completely get over the bitterness.... I drink it now and enjoy.... The tea is absolutely affective for pain and sleep... I can't imagine the tincture being anymore affective. I've been using it since mid spring up to now and it has given me a lot of relief and sound sleep. I bring water to almost boil. if it does boil I put a glass of cold water in it... don't want to cook the lettuce but hot water poured over it in a qt or 1/2gal mason jar to sit over nite until room temp... strain and put in frig till cold then drink as needed... I've mostly taken mine after a long day's physical work in garden, etc. Drink an 8oz glass and that's it.... I'm 78 and it keeps me almost pain free from aches and pains.

I noticed some wild lettuce springing up in 3 places and didn't want to lose it to the mower so I dug them up and stuck in 4" pots. They looked sad for a day or two but they quickly recovered in a shady spot and have now doubled in size. I'm not sure where I will place them but I am glad to have them as I've never seen it in my yard before and want to try tincturing it. I am in now in the midst of an Arkansas summer with heat up to 100 degrees already some days but they seem to be okay in pots, though not nearly as large as some I spotted in my nephew's yard.

1st. Use a sharp pointed shovel.
2nd. Dig a circle around the plant as wide as its leaves, keeping the shovel at approx. a 75-degree angle.
3rd. Gently work the shovel up & down until the plant is lose.
4th. Lift the plant up using the shovel & put it in a pot, or a wheel barrel & take them to where you are going to set them.
5th. Get the plants back in the ground asap. Set them in a hole so the bottom of the plant is above ground. (Water soil first if soil is dry).

Most sites say don’t bother with stems so I processed just the stems separate and got a substantial amount of extract that was just as potent as the leaves. So don’t throw away the stems. I do like processing stems separate. Easier to get the leaves strained. Then deal with stems separate.

Good conversation around 16:11. Once you buy a bottle of vodka to make the tincture, you've got vodka, which might be as effective as the tincture depending on the quantities. You could make alcohol, but then you're just making alcohol and might as well use that for its own sake.
Would be interesting to see this go through a press like is used for cannabis resin, to push lactucarium sap directly into a container and then making a tea or drying it into a powder without as much plant matter. I'd originally heard about this from an old book which didn't utilize the leaves at all, just the center vesicles

I let one plant go to see it and I got thousands of little seeds they remind me of dandelions with the fuzzy seeds.

This is great! The 2 of you together as a mother-and-daughter team is fun to watch 😂 My son and I do our channel together as a father-and-son team, and we actually just did our first tincture episode a couple of weeks ago, making a ghost pipe tincture, which is also for pain. I gave a subscribe to your channel in support, and I look forward to seeing more 👍

I’m very happy to see this video as I’m a chronic arthritis sufferer and don’t take any pharmaceuticals for pain and wanted to try this first

SO excited!! Watched your video and then realized we had some right here on our back patio. Determined stuff was poking thru between a block wall and concrete slab. 😳❤️ Rewatching the video again to make sure I do everything right. THANK YOU!!!!🎉🎉🎉

I transplanted a wild lettuce this spring. It's been a dry year so it needed regular watering till it took hold, then it's done well:) thanks for all your great videos!

You might try using some sharp (sterilized) pruners or secateurs to cut up the stalks. Be sure to have a piece of gauze or cheesecloth and 91% alcohol handy, to wipe the blades when they get sticky. 😊
Love your content and watching you & your mom work together. Please keep it up!!!

I just chuck mine in the bathtub and wash a few times, so much easier ! :) I have to because we live in sand country, don't matter if it rains because the sand will still splash up

Love making a salve from it. Very good pain relief. I’ll also make one adding yarrow and comfrey.

It's not bad as a tea at all. I've also infused some olive oil with it to experiment topically. I've taken the oil orally as well.
