What is crazy to me is how limited edition their albums used to be and still are... As the group grew, Orbits were unable to buy old albums because they only sold a certain amount... They could've easily sold 10 times the amount of predebut albums, if they actually sold them
Also, artists getting 30% of the revenue is pretty sweet, if the company would just act normally and pay for 100% of the expenses, as they should

    • @quuenbanaana8425

Yeah this. The artist does not decide to sell anything, they won't decide about the products and amounts, and that should always be the company's responsibility, to pay what they produce. A worker should never have to build dept over doing work

the stupidest thing bbc did is kick chuu out. her updated contract with bbc was ending at the end of this year anyway. everyone saw the signs of chuu leaving the company. everyone was expecting it. if bbc had just held out for a month and let her leave instead of kicking her this whole mess would’ve been avoided. (I’m sure the revenue and cost distributions would’ve come out eventually but dispatch and others wouldn’t have been actively digging around for info on chuu’s departure if it was just a cut and dry contract expiration as opposed to her getting kicked out suddenly and having everyone even knetz defend her)

Well, Chuu herself mentioned how incompetent they are so I guess it’s not all that surprising that they decided to dig their own grave whilst believing they were digging for gold. I suspect they wanted to make themselves look like victims since news of Chuu’s contract being amended successfully had gotten out and could give others ideas about disputing their own contracts including incoming trainees. Also she was standing up for her rights during schedules and doing so successfully, once again showing others in the industry that it’s possible to do so thus taking the abusive power away from the company. So they made Chuu out to be the bad guy and honestly with the track record of fans turning on idols the very moment they are shown to be imperfect is sickeningly frequent, BBC probably thought they had a guaranteed win. Chuu would be the bad guy, they’d be seen as the poor little company doing their best, they’d still be profiting off the other artists under their label, every thing would blow over and they could just keep doing what they were doing. Plus they probably didn’t want to give more revenue to Chuu for the now ‘postponed’ comeback so they scrambled to find a way to kick her out. But yeah they are so incompetent that they didn’t figure out that Chuu had an huge amount of support and they were shooting themselves in the foot. I doubt any company could predict that fans would actually go through with such a massive boycott of a comeback for a group as popular as Loona!
Anywho, bbc thought they could get away with their manipulation like they’d done with their artists, they were sorely mistaken.

It feels the company still saw Chuu as the clueless excited teenager who walked into blockberry all those years ago. Getting her mother to tell her off like she’s a child? BBC are insufferable. Kpop industry is so messed up that you’re considered “abusive” if you don’t accept abuse from your company and exercise your rights smh! I really hope contracts like these become illegal 😒
23:22 Omg facts! Some parents are so excited for their kid to be a star, they sign without really understanding. With contracts like these, you need a legal professional to look through it and explain all the jargon. Sooo many ex idols have spoken about not truly knowing the full extent of the contract when they signed, especially if the contract is in Korean and their family are from somewhere else. It’s easy to get manipulated.

    • @empressmarowynn

Companies in general try to get people to sign shady contracts all the time. I once had to talk my parents out of selling their timeshare to some guy who was going to give them a certain amount of money and then he would sell it to other buyers at a profit for himself. But when it came to how the numbers were working out there were literally thousands of dollars not accounted for in the contract. He tried the same stuff as BBC by treating me like a child who didn't understand even basic math. He was already going to be making a decent profit but then tried to screw them out of an additional $10,000. I had to literally find multiple court cases against him in the area to convince my parents not to do it. They were just eager to get rid of their timeshare because a different person had convinced them to buy a second one when they already had one to begin with. And I'm sure my parents aren't the only gullible people out there, even more so when it seems like all your (or your child's) wishes are about to come true.

THIIIS!!! Do y’all not realize how stupid adults can be? I’m fortunate that I have two judges and several attorneys in my family (including my father). We can discuss the unrealistic expectations that’s placed on me another time.
I never sign anything without fully reading through everything (minus the terms and service contracts social media platforms make you sign because those literally take years to read, yes LITERALLY). And if anything sounds fishy to me, I call it into question, make the other party clarify, and if I need to amend things, I’ll do it before signing and make them sign off of the amendments so that they’re legally valid. Not everyone has that privilege of knowing how to go into a meeting where things will be signed. Not everyone is able to determine what’s a good or bad deal that they’re entering into. Think of it this way, if your parents had to supervise you signing documents, do you really think they’d have any idea as to what they’re doing? Would they know if they’re being manipulated or deceived into signing something that they really don’t want to? Odds are, no. So, I don’t blame the Loona members or their parents. They wouldn’t have gotten into this situation in the first place if Blockberry wasn’t trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Blockberry is 100% responsible for all of this.

Thank you for pointing this out! I feel like a lot of people would love to think they are immune to signing bad contracts or getting conned but most people are not even aware that they should look for legal counsel when signing such a contract. Most people are not familiar with legal and business jargon and are not aware of how the music industry works. An honest company would have *explained* the contract in detail (especially the post settlement part) to begin with. That contract was obviously built in a way where the members would be trapped, it seems very intentional to me.

It's unfair that idols are in debt for even their comebacks in the first place. Most businesses take risks when they invest into something. Have you ever seen a decently-sized company that requires you to buy your own desk and chairs? Pay for the office space rental? What employees should be paying for is their college degrees and trainings, nothing more.
If they want to earn money from an artist, they should treat any k-pop idol like actual employees. Provide their training, housing (or give them housing allowance), shoulder production costs, then pay them for their labor. I'm okay with idols paying for their pre-debut training and all that, that's like getting a degree to get into a corporate business position. But the fact that even the production costs of comebacks are shared risks is unacceptable.
And oh, if companies want idols to take business and financial risks all through their careers, then they shouldn't even debut minors.

I just want to add that for the texts that were published, aside from the heavy sarcasm ones, Chuu actually used pretty polite/formal language with the BBC employees. A few Korean speakers on Reddit and AKP (which I do recognise are not the best sources) have said that while the translation of the texts is true content-wise, it lacks nuance in the presentation.
I really hope that the member's injunctions go through, and in the unlikely event that Loona gets picked up by another company, I'd love to see Chuu join again, though, at this point, I'd have no idea if she'd even want to. It seems that the remaining members support Chuu, and I'd hate for this to be the end of one of my fave ggs. And I have to be honest, I was interested in seeing how BBC would handle the lore with Chuu gone.

People who hate on Chuu because she signed the contract herself are just looking for a reason to hate on her out of jealousy. Yes she had signed the contract herself. But if the only thing that separates your teenage naive self and your biggest dreams was the contract, you too wouldn't care about what you are going to sign, you too would just want your trainee period to be over and your dreams to finally come true. Idols give up EVERYTHING in order to make their dreams come true including basic human rights and needs, but the moment they realise how the contracts they had signed are ruining their lives is already too late. They can't do anything. That company has their signature and if they leave before their contract expires they will have to repay the company for providing them with dorms, food and other stuff. There are two reasons companies love debuting minors: 1. People are creepy and have this obsession with idols (especially female ones) being young and pure and 2. Minors are more easily manipulated than adults. Chuu and the rest of LOONA are among a very few brave ones who dare to speak up about mistreatment but there are many many idols dealing with situations equally as bad as Chuu's who are afraid to do anything. Maybe even your favs. So think twice before you hate on Chuu.

For me there are thre important factors to highlight in this case:
    1) the entertainment business, for all its glitz and glamour is a well known cessspool of rotten expectations and overstimated dreams. Its very VERY hard to make any money, despite being in big companies, let alone a small one. For every act we even know the name of, there are thousands of others in debt, crushed by their own dreams. Going into this industry might seen like the goal to many artistic minded individuals, but thw ones who thrive are going to be the ruthless, business minded ones.
    2) or, to my second point, thw ones with a support system. Even if Chuu’s mom doesnt seem like the most law/business savage, she is THERE for her daughter and is protecting her to thw best of her abilities. And im sure she aint the only one behind this kid. You have to have balls to do. What she is doing… balls and
    3) the back to carry this choice. Orbits correct me if im wrong, but chuu is, by far, one of the if not thw most popular member of loona, at least to the non-orbit, international kpop fan. I dont believe any of the other members had the even thw choice toi fight the wat she hs, because they dont have. As much of the general public behind them as chuu has. She had the chance to fight for her rights because she is popular and well liked, because she had her mom/family support backing hwr up and aiding in the whole process, and because she is passionate, but she isnt naive to how business works.

If we're being honest here, the company addendum of doing 7-3 in favor of Chuu means sht really. To break it down for the people that are interested:
Let's take total revenue as a whole for 100%, divides by 12 LOONA member contracts is ~8.33%. Full disclaimer here is there's no definitive proof that all 12 signed the same contract split ratio, but that's not really relevant for what I'm trying to get at. Anyway,
    The original contract revenue split:
BBC take 70% of that 8.33% while LOONA takes 30% so
    BBC ~= 5.83% per contract x 12 ~= 70%
    Each member ~= 2.5% (30% total for all 12)
    Addendum contract:
The individual number above are true for all members but Chuu, so only the percentage for Chuu and BBC is flipped so
    BBC~= 5.83% x 11 + 2.5% ~= 66.7%
    LOONA ~= 2.5% x 11 + 5.83% ~= 33.3%
That change of a 3.3% profit loss is NOTHING in the grand scheme of thing for BBC since LOONA is now popular enough to achieve the ideal outcome until they disband pretty much. Remember, BBC by their own admission is profiting in the millions of dollar in the Dispatch article. Excluding Chuu, the 11 members already made 18.6 billion won revenue and an expense of 16.9 billion won. Using those number above, you can already see BBC has made billions of won in revenue (reads: profit). This is why I will not give BBC any sympathy or ground in this matter especially after making that stupid statement about feeling bad for not generating profit for LOONA like btch YOU are the leech that is draining their profit.

The solution is simple. Force all managers, VPs, and CEOs to follow all their groups on their schedule. Any breach, they will need to kowtow and fined to the afflicted group.

What I don't understand is that these contracts are no secret, these are the same contracts that have been reported on and everyone knows about for as long as kpop has been around. So the only way I can understand them singing it was the hope that they would actually make money when everyone already knows the most kpop idols end up broke, they thought they would be the ones that could win.
The other thing that I don't understand is since everyone already knows that kpop idols end up broke is that when they started I kept hearing that this massive debut project would only work because the company was paying for everything and not the idols, the idols would not be on the hook for all the money that was being spent. We all know now that that wasn't true and they didn't have a new modern contract but instead they had the original old school kpop contract where they always end up broke.
I know it's explained in the video that the parents are not lawyers but still, there is no secret, everyone knows that kpop idols never make money so they were full well knowing that this was all a gamble. I would never sign a contract like that nor should anyone else but I guess this is where that asian stereotype comes in that they love to gamble.
I don't think anything weird or wrong happened here because again we all know about these contracts and we all know you should never sign a contract like that.

From the very beginning I was sure there had to be some sort of argument or fight between Chuu and bbc staff, but even if Chuu overstepped during said fight, I was sure it was well deserved. This whole situation just confirmed all my suspicions. Good on her for being such a strong-willed person who's not afraid to take what's rightfully hers.

i get that not everyone is a business student or likes math or contract law. I also get that Idols must love the whole job to do the insane training and workload but seriously, a contract like that should be scrutinized beforehand and never ever signed in this form.
yes, Kpop activities/CBs are expensive but while they might just want to 'be on stage and perform' they also need to earn money, since it is a job and you get paid for doing a job.

Honestly, it's disgusting how BBC managed Chuu. Who do they think they are? They treated her like a child. Telling her mother out of all people? She's a fucking adult, and doing a little spoiler shouldn't have to get her own family involved. BBC belittled her and expected us to fall for their gaslighting. Now, I don't stan Loona, but I was planning to because of Chuu. I would be upset just like Chuu. Though I agree she could have used better words, she has tons of evidence on her side, and plus that was one time. Many popular idols have had similar situations and they are still praised. I can't imagine being a whole-ass company and instead of kindly asking Chuu to not provide spoilers, they messaged her fucking mom as if she's her manager.
