Why The Weeknd & Dua Lipa Sound Like The 80s | Genius News

- Опубліковано 9 кві 2020
- Dua Lipa and The Weeknd’s latest projects, Future Nostalgia and After Hours, both contain songs that evoke nostalgia of the 1980s. From Dua Lipa’s “Physical” to The Weeknd’s “In Your Eyes,” the synths and rhythm call back to the dance floors of queer clubs of color from the late ‘70s and '80s. Genius spoke to Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan from Vox’s Switched On Pop podcast to break down why it’s possible for a song to capture the sound of a generation.

I feel like we're missing a lead up here, 80's synth wave and retro wave have gained huge popularity because they're both retro and futuristic at the same time. We have no vision of our future now, there's no back to the future or KIT for our generation, so weirdly the only way to experience or dream about the future is to return to the 80's sound. That's my take.
80s is bae, Retrowave and Synthwave are underrated

But he went pop...like too pop! He was like unique r&b. And as for to doolipa girl I really dgaf
The weeknd started off as Alternative R&B notably with very dark themes which tend not to be discussed in R&B. I've been listening to him since I was 2011 and that's what he's encompassed. As time went on he went more pop and incorporated more trap elements which is good . But at the end of the day he will still always be a R&B singer

I hope they bring back the 80s style. I just love the music. It sounds great too. The pop music is just getting too old and I want to hear something new.
It is back a lot of the fashion and music is back even mullets and other haircuts and clothing are back
The irony in wanting to hear something new and that new being music from like 30 years ago. 😂 Through I get that ‘new’ can refer to something that you’re not familiar with even if it’s been around. it’s just interesting we don’t seem to be experiencing as much music that sounds new new anymore
If you listen to Starboy album The Weeknd already putting 80s way ahead before 2020 actually. Like Wanderlust from Kiss Land. People sleeping on some songs in the album. If you listen to Die For You from Starboy album I'm pretty sure you understand what I mean.

i love how they’re bringing back old sounds & grooves.
man the intro on future nostalgia gives me major daft punk vibes with the vocoder
It's actually reminiscent of a Gap band song or Zapp.
Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia is solid start to finish. So much groove, base lines and synths
No wonder I am addicted to these 2 albums . I generally don't like today's music too much nor am I a big fan of them . But both their albums have an 80s appeal that have won my heart.
These two artists also have a ton of talent within themselves and can pull eccentric stuff like this off. I personally love it.

That's so stupid, there's more to make an 80's song other than just using an 80's synth.
Josalfas well if it wasn’t for the beats they use they would sound like any other pop singer. Prove me wrong.

Bro I loved both of these albums and now I kinda know why these artists sound like this
@James Bong artists are realizing the music industry is dying and they aren't creative enough to make new and interesting music in 2020 so they rely on musical tropes of the past as a crutch. But sure, muh nostalgia.
